We are privileged to live in the Engadin, and we cherish that privilege every day. The valley's nature and the leisure activities it offers are unrivalled. Having grown up here, we know the most beautiful spots both in the valley and on the mountains. In this new edition of the Skiservice Magazine, we would like to share some of the best with you.

Der Skisport feiert in diesen Winter sein grösstes Fest in unserem Tal. Vom 6. bis 19. Februar 2017 ist St. Moritz Austragungsort der Alpinen Ski-Weltmeisterschaften. Eine Ehre, die uns schon zum fünften Mal zuteil wird. Wir freuen uns mit Ihnen auf diesen Grossanlass auf der Corviglia.

This coming winter, the sport of skiing will celebrate its biggest happening in our valley: St. Moritz will host the 2017 Alpine World Ski Championships from 6 to 19 February. We are proud to be hosting this competition for the fifth time. We, as you all, are looking forward to this major event on Corviglia.

DAS STÄRKSTE TEAM DER SKI-WM «Voluntaris» heissen die mehr als 1'300 freiwilligen Helfer, die an den SkiWeltmeisterschaften 2017 vor und hinter den Kulissen im Einsatz stehen. Ohne Lohn arbeiten sie fast rund um die Uhr – sie sind das Rückgrat der Weltmeisterschaften. Mit dabei ist auch Skiservice-Gründer Curdin Conrad.

VOLUNTARI

«Die Mischung macht’s!», lacht Walter Stamm und rührt einen Becher Lebensmittelfarbe in einen Eimer mit warmem Wasser. Stamm ist für die Mischung der blauen Farbe verantwortlich, welche den Athleten auf der Rennstrecke den Weg weist. Blaue Leitlinien machen bei Skirennen die Konturen und Unebenheiten der Strecke besser sichtbar. An der SkiWM 2017 werden diese Markierungen von einem kleinen, routinierten Team von freiwilligen Helfern gezogen. «Die Farbe macht nur ein Prozent der Mischung aus. Je nach Kälte kommt noch mehr oder weniger Alkohol hinzu, damit die Flüssigkeit in den Spritzdüsen nicht gefriert.» Der Job ist anstrengend: Oft ist es noch stockdunkel, wenn das «FarbTeam» auf den Berg kommt und bei Tagesanbruch beginnt gleich die Arbeit auf der Strecke – bei jedem Wetter. «Gerade bei schlechter Sicht ist unsere Arbeit entscheidend für ein sicheres Rennen», erklärt Curdin Conrad. «Die Längs- und Querlinien auf dem Schnee schaffen farbliche Kontraste und helfen den Fahrern, Wellen und Hügel besser zu erkennen.» Zur Markierung der Strecke kommt die Farbmischung in einem Behälter, den der «Sprüher» auf dem Rücken trägt. Mit einer Handpumpe wird sie regelmässig auf den Schnee gesprüht. Gefragt sind gute und kräftige Skifahrer: «Mit 30 Kilo auf dem Rücken einen vereisten Hang herunterzurutschen und dabei noch gleichmässige Linien zu ziehen, ist nicht immer ganz einfach», weiss Robert Turnes. Turnes ist seit über 40 Jahren als freiwilliger Helfer bei den St. Moritzer Skirennen aktiv. «Voluntari zu sein, gehört für mich einfach dazu. Wir arbeiten hart, aber es macht grossen Spass.»

Blaue Linien schaffen Kontraste und weisen den Fahrern den Weg

Nach der WM 2017 wollen die drei kürzer treten. «Wir sind etwas grau geworden», schmunzelt SkiserviceGründer Curdin Conrad. Geeigneten Nachwuchs zu finden, ist nicht immer leicht: «Voluntaris sind nicht einfach Gratis-Arbeitskräfte. Jedes Team hat genau definierte Aufgaben. Sie zu erfüllen braucht oft jahrelange Erfahrung. Nur so können die Rennen reibungslos und sicher durchgeführt werden», erklärt Turnes am Ende des Einsatztages. Das Rennen ist vorbei. Es gab keine nennenswerten Probleme; niemand aus dem Farbteam ist im steilen Gelände gestürzt. «Unser stärkster Motivator ist wohl der Teamgeist», sinniert Teamchef Turnes während der Kontrolle der Ausrüstung für den nächsten Tag. «Zusammen können wir einen Beitrag dafür leisten, dass ein kleiner Ort wie St. Moritz etwas so Grosses wie eine Ski-WM auf die Beine stellen kann.» Müde machen sich die Mannen auf den Nachhauseweg. Morgens um sechs werden sie sich wieder treffen. ◆

«Voluntari» (Rätoromanisch) bedeutet «Freiwilliger». Rund 1'300 freiwillige Helfer sind an der Alpinen Ski-WM 2017 im Einsatz. THE STRONGEST TEAM AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS «Voluntaris» is the 1,300-strong team of volunteers that will be working on and behind the scenes at the 2017 World Ski Championships. They are the backbone of the championships, working tirelessly around the clock and without salary. Curdin Conrad, the founder of Skiservice, is one of them.

«It’s all down to the right mix,» chuckles Walter Stamm as he stirs in a cup of food colourant into a bucket of warm water. Walter is in charge of the blue paint mixture used to show the athletes their way down the hill. The blue lines bring out the contours and the uneven ground of the course. At the 2017 World Ski Championships, these markings are drawn by a small team of experienced volunteers. «The dye is but one percent of the mixture. Depending on the outside temperature, we add more or less alcohol to the solution to make sure it doesn’t freeze in the sprayers.» It is a tough job. Invariably, it will still be pitch-black when the ‹colouring team› arrives on the mountain, and work on the course begins as soon as day breaks – regardless of the weather. «When visibility is bad, our job is all the more crucial to ensure a safe race» explains Curdin Conrad. «The lines down the sides and across the course create a colour contrast against the snow and help the skiers make out bumps and undulations.»

The ‹sprayers› haul the colour mixture up to the slopes in a container that they carry on their backs. They apply it to the snow evenly using a hand pump. Strong and skilled skiers are required: «Sliding down an icy slope with 30 kilos on your back and making sure to paint even lines at the same time can be tricky,» Robert Turnes reflects on the task. He has been volunteering for the ski races in St. Moritz for more than 40 years. «I could not imagine not being a voluntari. We work hard, but we have lots of fun, too.» After the 2017 world championship, the trio wants to slow down. «We are turning grey,» Curdin Conrad, the founder of Skiservice, says with a grin. Finding new people to take over can be difficult: «Voluntaris aren't just free labour. Each team has clearly defined tasks. It can take years to master them. But that is the only way we can ensure that the races can be carried out safely and without a hitch,» Robert tells us at the end of his shift. The race is over. The colouring team encountered no major problems;

none of them had a fall on the steep terrain. «Team spirit is our strongest motivator, I guess,» muses team captain Robert as he checks the gear for the following day's work. «Jointly, we can be instrumental in helping a small place like St. Moritz bring about something as big as a world ski championship.» The men troop home wearily. They will meet again on the following day at 6 a.m. ●

PATRICK KÜNG WIE EINST RUSSI, KILLY UND SEILER «Das Engadin ist für mich Erholung pur», schwärmt der Schweizer Abfahrtsweltmeister Patrick Küng. Wenn er am 11. Februar am Start der WM-Abfahrt steht, wird die Erholung aber nicht sein Ziel sein: Seine Mission ist keine geringere als die Titelverteidigung. «Dass ich schon Weltmeister bin, nimmt mir etwas Druck weg, aber vor eigenem Publikum zu starten, ist doch etwas ganz besonderes», sagt Patrick Küng (32). 2015 wurde er in Beaver Creek Abfahrtsweltmeister und auch für die Heim-WM im Februar hat er sich viel vorgenommen. «Ich liebe den St. Moritzer Schnee», sagt er zu den Verhältnissen auf der Corviglia. «Er ist so trocken und so aggressiv wie in Beaver Creek.» Der aggressive Kunstschnee liegt Küng. Dennoch macht er sich auch Gedanken über die Entwicklung im Rennsport: «Das Material und die Pistenpräparierung machen jedes Jahr Fortschritte. Die Geschwindigkeiten und die Kräfte, die auf uns Fahrer wirken, werden grösser und grösser. Der Schutz vor Verletzungen muss eine sehr hohe Priorität behalten.» Angstgefühle kennt er vor einem Rennen aber nicht. «In der Minute vor dem Start lasse ich mir noch einmal die Schlüsselstellen durch den Kopf gehen und die Punkte, die ich mir vorgenommen habe.» In St. Moritz geht’s dann besonders rasant los. Im «Freien Fall», dem steilsten Abfahrtsstart der Welt, wird er in vier Sekunden auf 140 Stundenkilometer beschleunigen und muss dann gleich eine hängende Linkskurve überstehen. Entschieden werde das Rennen aber nicht am Start, sagt Küng: «Der technische Mittelteil wird den Ausschlag geben, wer am Ende auf dem Treppchen steht.» Küng kennt die St. Moritzer Strecke noch nicht – die Hauptprobe im letzten Winter hat er wegen einer Knieverletzung verpasst. «Ich hoffe aber schon, dass wir Schweizer noch auf der Strecke trainieren dürfen.» Die Mission des Patrick Küng heisst Titelverteidigung. In der Abfahrt gelang das zuletzt 1972 einem gewissen Bernhard Russi – und davor Jean-Claude Killy und Toni Seiler. Wir drücken Patrick die Daumen! ◆

«To me, there is no better place to relax than the Engadin,» enthuses Patrick Küng, the Swiss downhill world champion. On 11 February next, relaxation will not be on top of his mind though when he stands at the start of the world championship’s downhill race in St. Moritz: he is set on no smaller feat than to defend his title. «Knowing that I hold the title of world champion takes some pressure off, but racing in front of my fellow citizens is still very special,» says Patrick Küng (32). In 2015, Beaver Creek saw him become downhill world champion; he is aiming high at the world championship on his home turf, too. «I love the snow in St. Moritz,» he says about the conditions on Corviglia. «The snow is as dry and as aggressive as the one in Beaver Creek.» The aggressive artificial snow is to Patrick’s liking. The pace of development in racing is a cause for reflection all the same: «The materials and the preparation of the runs improve year on year. We reach ever increasing speeds and are exposed to ever increasing forces. Keeping skiers safe from injury must remain a top priority.» Ahead of the race, he knows no fear, though. «In the minute before the start, I mentally go through all of the critical spots on the course and all of the things I intend to get right.» The start in St. Moritz is anything but gentle. In the «free fall», the world’s steepest start to a downhill race, he will go from nought to 140 kmph in four seconds, only to having to master a hanging left curve next. «Still, it’s not the start that cuts the race,» says Patrick, «it’s the technical part in the middle that clinches the winner». Patrick is new to the course in St. Moritz – he missed the rehearsal last winter due to his knee injury. «I do hope, though, that we Swiss will get a chance to train on the course.» Patrick Küng is on a mission is to defend his title. The last time this feat was achieved in downhill was in 1972 by a certain Bernhard Russi – and, before that, Jean-Claude Killy and Toni Seiler. We are keeping our fingers crossed! ●

«DANK DEM SKISPORT HABE ICH DIE WELT GESEHEN» Als Olympiasieger war er angereist, als Doppelweltmeister fuhr er wieder heim: Der Südtiroler Gustav Thöni war der gefeierte Star der SkiWeltmeisterschaften 1974 in St. Moritz. «St. Moritz war fast wie ein Heimrennen», erinnert sich Gustav Thöni (65) an seine Triumphe im Slalom und Riesenslalom. «Die Tifosi waren in Bussen aus allen Landesteilen gekommen.» Tausende italienische Fans machten die Corviglia im Februar 1974 zum Hexenkessel; sie schrien ihr Idol förmlich zum Sieg. Der Skisport hat Gustav Thöni die Tore zur Welt geöffnet. «Als Junge aus einem Bergtal nach Japan reisen zu können, war in den Siebzigern schon eine grosse Sache», erinnert er sich. Aber er kam auch immer wieder gern zurück in seine Heimat. Noch während seiner Skikarriere begann er, das elterliche Hotel am Fuss des Stilfser Jochs auszubauen. Der Spaziergang durch Thönis Trophäensammlung ist ein Gang durch die Geschichte des Skisports. Ein Olympiasieg und fünf Weltmeistertitel machen ihn zu einem der erfolgreichsten Skifahrer aller Zeiten. Nach seiner Karriere als Rennfahrer wurde Thöni zu einem sehr gefragten Trainer; er führte Alberto Tomba zu dessen grössten Erfolgen. «Meine Jugendrennen bestritt ich noch in Lederschuhen», lächelt Thöni. «Und meine Slalomskier in St. Moritz waren über zwei Meter lang.» Carving-Skis und Kunstschnee haben den Skirennsport schneller und präziser gemacht. «Die Entwicklung soll man nicht aufhalten», sagt Thöni dazu. Auch neben der Piste macht er wichtige Zukunftstrends aus: «Freeriding und Skitouren haben dem Skisport neue Anhänger gebracht. Das ist gut so.» Den Weltcupzirkus verfolgt Gustav Thöni noch heute, die Rennen in seiner norditalienischen Heimat besucht er persönlich. Ansonsten nimmt er es ruhiger, und er hat auch die Zeit, seinem Enkel (12) die schnellste Linie durch die Slalomstangen zu zeigen. Ob der Junge einmal eine Rennfahrerkarriere einschlagen wird, weiss der Grossvater noch nicht und es ist ihm auch nicht so wichtig. «Die Jungen sollen beim Sport Spass haben», lautet seine Devise. «So wie wir in den Siebzigern unseren Spass hatten.» ◆

Even then, he always loved coming home. While still pursuing his career as a professional skier, he began enlarging the hotel his parents owned and ran at the foot of the Stelvio Pass. Walking along Gustav’s collection of trophies is like a taking a trip down ski sports memory lane. As Olympic gold medallist and five-times world champion, he is one of the most successful skiers of all times. Following on from his career as a skier, he became a sought-after trainer; he is the man behind Alberto Tomba's biggest successes. «As an adolescent, I was competing in the races wearing leather boots,» Gustav recalls, smiling. «And my St. Moritz slalom skis were longer than 2 metres.» The sport of ski racing has become faster and more precise with carving skis and man-made snow. «There is no point in holding up the development,» Gustav observes. He spots major trends off the piste too: «Freeride and backcountry skiing have attracted a new type of skier. That's a good thing.» Gustav Thöni still closely follows what is happening in the Ski World Cup; he will visit all of the races taking place in his home region in northern Italy. But apart from that, he takes life easy, and he still finds time to teach his grandson, aged 12, the fastest line through the slalom poles. He can't tell yet whether his grandson will one day take up a professional ski racing career, and it is not that important to him. «Kids should have fun when they do sports,» is how he sees it. «Just like we had fun back in the seventies.» ●

FRÜHSTÜCKEN MIT JAMES BOND Auf 3'303 Metern bietet der Corvatsch die höchste Bergstation der Region und eine atemberaubende Aussicht. DIAVOLEZZA (2’978 M)

DER BERG DER GEGENSÄTZE Die Diavolezza ist der Berg der Gegensätze. Alpinisten beginnen hier ihre Hochtouren ins Berninamassiv, Gäste-Gruppen aus Asien und Amerika «wagen» sich auf den Gitterboden der Aussichtsterrasse, Weltcupathleten trainieren die schnellste Linie durch die Slalomtore. Von Mitte Oktober bis Ende Mai ist hier Skisaison, dann folgt der Bergsommer. Vor dem Panoramarestaurant thront der Piz Palü – für viele der schönste Berg der Alpen. Seine drei Gipfel ragen vom Persgletscher 900 Meter fast senkrecht empor. Hängegletscher bedecken seine breiten Schultern – im Palmares eines Alpinisten darf er auf keinen Fall fehlen. Abends, wenn die letzte Bahn gefahren ist, wird es ruhig auf der Diavolezza. Die Reisegruppen sind verschwunden, die letzten Sonnenstrahlen beleuchten den Palü. Zwei, drei Seilschaften essen währschaft, kontrollieren noch einmal ihre Ausrüstung und gehen dann früh schlafen. Wer nicht auf eine Tour geht, bleibt länger sitzen und geniesst noch ein paar Gläser Wein. Dann kehrt Ruhe ein auf dem Berg der Gegensätze. Morgens um vier werden die Seilschaften aufbrechen und den Palü bezwingen.

MUOTTAS MURAGL (2’453 M)

DER ROMANTIKER Vergesst Ipanema, Key West und Santorini: den schönsten Sonnenuntergang bietet Muottas Muragl. Fast endlos ragen von hier die Oberengadiner Seen in die Alpen hinein. Im Sommer als glitzernde Spiegel; im Winter als makellose, weisse Ebenen. Muottas, wie ihn die Einheimischen nennen, ist der Genussberg – Muottas ist der Romantiker. Die Standseilbahn aus dem Jahr 1907 verströmt einen Hauch von Pionierzeit. Sie war einst die erste Bergbahn Graubündens und lässt noch heute die Herzen der Gäste höher schlagen. Spaziergänger

nutzen sie - und Familien beim Schlittelspass auf der über vier Kilometer langen Bahn durch den Wald. Vor allem abends kommen dann die Feinschmecker, die sich in einem der Restaurants verwöhnen lassen. Einige von ihnen übernachten auf dem Berg: das Romantik Hotel bietet 16 gemütlich ausgebaute Arvenzimmer - jedes mit garantiert einzigartiger Bergaussicht. Der Maler Giovanni Segantini schuf hier seine Werke für die Weltausstellung von Paris 1900. Das Licht und die Aussicht von Muottas Muragl inspirieren noch heute viele zehntausend Gäste dieses Bergs. At 3,303 metres, the Corvatsch offers the highest mountain cableway station in the region and a spectacular view. At breakfast time, the Bernina mountain range to the south seems to be within grasp. Looking west, on a clear day, you will see the Matterhorn and the Mont Blanc on the horizon. To the north, St. Moritz and the Corviglia literally lie at your feet. Action scenes for Bond movies were filmed here, piano concerts have been held under a full moon sky, and, every spring, the world’s best freestylers make out the winner of the World Cup on the Corvatsch. To most, though, it is just the most diverse of all mountains. Whether you’re a skier or a snowboarder, a beginner or an accomplished off-piste skier, you will find just the right terrain to suit you.

On Diavolezza, the contrast couldn’t be any starker. It is the place where alpinists set off on their tours into the rock massif of the Bernina; it is also the place where touring guests from Asia and the Americas warily step onto the grid floor of the panoramic terrace, or where World Cup skiers train in search of the fastest line along the slalom poles. The ski season lasts from mid-October to the end of May, giving way seamlessly to the mountain summer. The restaurant's panoramic windows offer a splendid view of the Piz Palü, which many consider to be the most beautiful mountain in the Alps. Its three peaks tower above the Pers glacier, it is a sheer drop of some 900 metres. Hanging glaciers cover its broad shoulders. To an alpinist, no list of mountains climbed will be complete without the Piz Palü. At night, when the cableway stops running, tranquillity descends on the Diavolezza. The touring guests have left, the sun is shining its last rays onto the Palü. Two or three groups of mountaineers partake of a wholesome meal, check their gear once again, and turn in early. Those not leaving for a tour the following day, linger on and enjoy another glass of wine. Later, the quiet of the night sets in on the mountain of contrasts. At four a.m., the alpinists will set off and conquer the Piz Palü.

Never mind Ipanema, Key West or Santorini: the most stunning sunsets take place on Muottas Muragl. The lakes of the Upper Engadine Valley stretch towards the horizon in a seemingly endless succession – sparkling mirrors in summer and a stretch of immaculate white in winter. Muottas, as the locals call it, is the mountain of pleasure – Muottas is the romantic one. The funicular, Grisons’ first ever mountain railway, is reminiscent of the pioneering era. Built in 1907, even nowadays, it makes guests’ hearts beat faster. It is popular with walkers and with families who are headed for the 2.5-mile-long sledge run through the woods. The evening will see gourmets arrive for a treat in one of the restaurants. Some will stay overnight in one of the romantic hotel’s 16 cosy pinewood rooms, each of which offers a unique mountain vista. Here is where the painter Giovanni Segantini created his works of art for the 1990 Paris World Exhibition. The light and view on Muottas Muragl still fascinate thousands of visitors every year. Segantini’s heirs no longer paint – Instagram has become their canvass, and the world wide web their world exhibition.

Perched above St. Moritz and the Corviglia slopes like an oversized precious stone, the Piz Nair ('black peak'), affords a view from 3,057 metres that caters to all tastes: the string of lakes along the Upper Engadine to the south, the Piz Julier and its glacier to the west, the endless sea of peaks to the north, and, eastwards, an unhindered view as far as the Dolomites. Those afraid of heights will hesitate to step onto the observation platform's grid floor, but the view – reason enough for many to come up – is as grandiose from the restaurant inside. Hollywood stars, tycoons and royalty are no strangers to the place. A trip to St. Moritz isn't complete without a ride to the Piz Nair. On its way up, the cable car passes the "free fall". The world's steepest start to a ski race catapults the riders from nought to onehundred-and-forty in just four seconds. Even the most seasoned of pros will draw a deep breath before hurling himself down the free fall. On the other side, the ski slope is gentler. It rarely gets hectic, the chairlift at Lej da la Pesch ('lake of peace') fully living up to its name. The super steep slope to the bottom of the Grischa chairlift or the endless Val Schlattain ending at the Glüna chairlift will take you back to the Corviglia side, the Alps' premier ski area.

Willkommen in der Zeitma schine. Auf 2'959 Metern scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben: die Lagalb verströmt noch heute den Charme der Sechzigerjahre, als die Bahn gebaut wurde. Seither ist viel geschehen, aber kaum etwas hat sich hier verändert. Der Reiz der Lagalb liegt in ihrer Abgeschiedenheit. Aber sie ist auch ihr Verderben. Die Lagalb ist der ewige Geheimtipp. In fünf Jahrzehnten hat sie in keinem Winter einen Gewinn gemacht. Sessel- und Skilifte wurden gebaut und wieder abgerissen, Weltcuprennen sollten sie bekannt machen und sogar einen Tierpark gab es hier oben einmal. Ende des Winters wird die Bahn wieder den Besitzer wechseln. Hauptsache, sie bleibt. Die Lagalb ist Kult.

2’000 Meter tief Hier ist eine schwarze Piste noch eine schwarze Piste. Vor allem der Hang direkt unterhalb der Bergstation hat es in sich. Er gehört zu den steilsten Pisten der Alpen und sieht den ganzen Winter keine Pistenraupe. Einmal drin, gibt’s kein Zurück mehr. Bei schönem Wetter sieht man von hier bis fast ans Mittelmeer. 2'000 Meter tiefer sieht man das Puschlav mit dem Lago di Poschiavo. Das Klima dort ist im Sommer fast mediterran und schon wenige Kilometer weiter wachsen im Veltlin Früchte und beste Weine. Italien ist greifbar nah.

Welcome in the time machine. Time seems to have stood still here at 2,959 metres. Today, still, the Lagalb exudes the charm of the sixties from when the cableway was built. A lot has happened since, but nothing much has changed here. The charm of the Lagalb lies in its remoteness – which risks being its downfall, too. The Lagalb will forever be the insider’s tip. Never in its fifty years of existence has it made a profit. Chair lifts and ski lifts were built and later dismantled. World Cup races were supposed to bring fame. Even an animal zoo was set up at one point. At the end of the winter, the mountain cableway will change hands once again. All that matters is for it to stay on.The Lagalb has cult status.

It is arguably the steepest slope in the Alps and isn’t groomed all winter. There is no going back once you set off. On a sunny day, you can see almost as far as the Mediterranean Sea. 2,000 metres below lies the Val di Poschiavo in which nestles the Lago di Poschiavo. Its summer climate is almost Mediterranean. In the Valtellina, just around the corner, fruits grow in summer and excellent wines are made. Italy is palpable.

KEEPING TRACK OF THE TRENDS As early as autumn, long before the first snow, the Skiservice team starts planning the winter after next. Fabrics and colours will be discussed; more than one year ahead, the team will preview sample collections and place preliminary orders.

«Being an opinion leader among Swiss sports goods retailers, suppliers often involve us early on in the development of their new collections to get our input based on working with the product,» explains Karin Conrad, Skiservice's managing director. Ski fashion, in particular, has long lead times. «It is a complex combination of technical fabrics, waterproof layers, insulation materials, ergonomic fit, and a number of other components that

make up the functionality of a piece of clothing.» All year round, Skiservice's purchasing team keeps in touch closely with suppliers, opinion leaders, and other leading retailers around the world, to keep abreast of the trends being set by reputed brands and to scout for novelties. By the time the ISPO, the international sports goods fair held in Munich, comes round in February, Skiservice has already made all its major purchasing decisions

for the coming winter. The world's biggest trade show in the sports industry, nevertheless, is an important fixture in the calendar of the Skiservice team. In the halls for fashion, sports gear, and accessories, they will hunt for novelties, foster their international contacts and exchange views with them. «You can't see too much,» Karin Conrad says. «After the winter is before the winter.» ●

Flocken so gross wie taschentuecher

Wer den Skilift Aela nicht kennt, muss ihn halt suchen. Vom Ostende des Dorfes zieht er uns in einer schmalen Schneise den Nordhang hoch. Das Gelände ist steil und verlangt volle Konzentration. Hinunter geht es zwischen Bäumen und Felsbrocken, über Steilwände und in Couloirs. Nirgends im Engadin kann man so in den Wäldern fahren wie hier. Bei schönem Wetter sieht man oben von St. Moritz bis fast an die italienische Grenze. Aber heute ist nichts mit Aussicht: Flocken so gross wie Taschentücher legen sich auf Büsche, Bäume, die Brillen der Fahrer und die Linsen unserer Kameras. Der frische Schnee deckt alles zu und schluckt jeden Schall. Monoton rattern die Skiliftbügel am Seil über die Rollen. Die anderen Bahnen haben geschlossen. Zu dicht ist der Schneesturm, zu hoch die Lawinengefahr. Maloja ist unser kleines Rückzugsgebiet – bei Schneefall unser Ein und Alles. Hier und da hört man einen Freudenschrei. Maloja ist Lebenslust. Der Herrgott hat es gut gemeint mit Maloja. Und wenn der Lift stoppt, wird es ganz still im Paradies.◆

Peace in powder paradise

It might take you a while to find the Aela ski lift. Starting at the eastern end of the village, the lift will pull you up the north-facing slope along a narrow corridor. The descent is steep and requires total concentration. The way down takes you through trees and boulders, over cliffs and inside couloirs. It is the best place in the Engadine to ski in the trees. On a sunny day, from the top, you will see all the way to St. Moritz and almost as far as the border with Italy. But, today, we haven't come for the view: snowflakes the size of napkins settle on bushes, and trees, and the skiers' goggles as well as the lenses of our cameras. Fresh snow blankets the landscape and any noise. The T-bars on their way up rattle monotonously as they pass the pulleys. All other ski lifts are shut; the snowstorm is too intense, the avalanche risk too high. Maloja is our small retreat â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on a snowy day, it's all the world to us. You'll hear a shriek now and then. Maloja is sheer bliss. The Lord has been generous with Maloja. And, when the lift stops, now and then, stillness returns to paradise.

DIE LUST AM LAUFEN Es ist März im Engadin und im Tal beginnen die Loipen, weich zu werden. Auf über 2'200 Metern, unweit der Bernina-Passstrasse, ziehen Selina und Elisa Gasparin ihre Runden im Firnschnee. Es ist die Lust am Laufen, die sie auf die Alp Bondo bringt.

DIE BEIDEN WELTKLASSEBIATHLETINNEN SIND IN PONTRESINA AUFGEWACHSEN.

Den nahen Berninapass kennen sie in- und auswendig. Im Sommer trainieren sie hier auf Rollskiern; Einheiten am Leistungslimit in der superdünnen Bergluft. Nach ihrem vielversprechenden Olympia-Auftritt in Sotchi arbeiten Selina (32) und Elisa (25) schon wieder beide am Fernziel Olympia. In Südkorea wollen sie 2018 bei den Besten sein.

ELISA ERLITT IM LETZTEN WINTER EINEN SCHWEREN RÜCKSCHLAG.

Wegen Übermüdung musste sie ihre Saison abbrechen. Schritt für Schritt arbeitet sie sich jetzt wieder an ihre ursprüngliche Leistungsfähigkeit heran. «Es hat Monate gedauert, bis ich mich wieder wie eine Athletin fühlte. In dieser Zeit waren mir meine beiden Schwestern wichtige Gesprächspartner», sagt sie rückblickend. Vor allem die sieben Jahre ältere Selina konnte Elisa mit ihrer Erfahrung zur Seite stehen. DIE WETTKAMPFSAISON WIRD WIEDER LANG UND SIE WIRD HART.

Im Februar kommt die Weltmeisterschaft – eine Hauptprobe für Olympia. Danach gibt’s dann hoffentlich wieder einen dieser Frühlingstage auf der Alp Bondo. Zeit und Raum für die Lust am Laufen. Mit Firnschnee, Sonne und Engadiner Bergluft. ◆

Rundloipe (4,2 km) bei der Talstation Diavolezza am Berninapass. 10 km von Pontresina, mit Buslinie 2 oder Berninabahn. Präpariert ab dem ersten Schneefall bis zur Eröffnung der Loipen im Tal und in den Frühlingsmonaten. Unser Tipp: Skating im Firnschnee in dieser einzigartigen Landschaft am Berninapass.

Circular cross-country course (4,2 km) at the foot of the Diavolezza cableway near the Bernina Pass. 10 km from Pontresina, take bus no. 2 or the Bernina railway. The track is groomed between the first snow and the opening of the tracks in the valley, as well as in spring time. FEELING LIKE A RUN March has arrived in the Engadin, and the cross-country courses down in the valley are getting slushy. At 2,200 metres, not far from the road going up to the Bernina Pass, Selina and Elisa Gasparin are doing their laps in the firn. It is their appetite for outdoor exercise that brings them up to the Alp Bondo. THE TWO WORLD-CLASS BIATHLETES SPENT THEIR CHILDHOOD IN PONTRESINA.

They know the nearby Bernina Pass inside out. Here, in summer, they train on roller skis; workout units in the rarefied mountain air at the performance limit. Following their promising performances

at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Selina (32) and Elisa (25) have begun working towards their next Olympic aspiration. In South Korea, in 2018, they want to be among the best. LAST WINTER, ELISA SUFFERED A MAJOR SETBACK.

She had to quit the season due to exhaustion. Step by step, she is now gradually returning to her old form. «It took me months to feel like an athlete again. Getting advice from both of my sisters helped a lot in those months,» she says, looking back. Her elder sister's experience, Selina is seven years her senior, was invaluable. THE COMPETITION SEASON WILL, AS EVER, BE LONG AND FOUGHT HARD.

The world championships, a rehearsal for the Olympic games, will take place in February. After that, there will hopefully be another of those beautiful spring days on Alp Bondo. Time and space for their appetite for outdoor exercise. With firn snow, the sun and the Engadin mountain air. ●

"Von türkisblau bis violett" Saoseo! Der Name klingt wie die Entspannung bei der Massage nach einer Hochtour in den Bergen. Genauso entspannend ist auch die Landschaft. Von türkisblau bis violett leuchtet das Wasser, rund um den See steht ein Urwald aus Arven und Lärchen, stahlblau spannt sich der Himmel über das verträumte Val da Camp. Auf drei Seiten ist das Bergtal von Italien umschlossen, von Sfazù an der Bernina-Passstrasse fährt im Sommer ein Linienbus zur Saoseo-Hütte. Ab da ist es nur noch ein Spaziergang bis zum See, den viele den schönsten Bergsee Graubündens nennen. Wanderrouten und Hochtouren haben das Gebiet bekannt und beliebt gemacht. Hier, auf 2’028 Metern, kann man sich wunderbar die Füsse kühlen. Das klare Wasser lockt sogar zum Bade – aber nur die ganz Mutigen schwimmen hier. Klirrend kalt ist das Schmelzwasser, das dem See die faszinierende Farbe gibt. Wer etwas länger bleibt, wird belohnt: Wenn die Sonne hinter den Bergen der Berninagruppe verschwindet, spielt sich hier ein Farbenspiel ab, das man nur mit einem Ausdruck beschreiben kann: Saoseo!◆

Das Val di Campo zweigt in Sfazù - 25 km nach Pontresina - von der Berninastrasse ab. Busverbindung nach Sfazù ganzjährig ab Pontresina und Poschiavo. Juni-Oktober Linienbus ins Tal bis zum Rifugio Saoseo (SAC), wo man auch gut essen kann. "from turquoise to violet" Saoseo! The name sounds like the relaxation one feels from a massage after a strenuous hike in the mountains. The landscape feels equally relaxing. The lake's water shimmers in hues of blue from turquoise to violet, encircled by a rainforest composed of stone pines and larches, a steel-blue sky arches over the dreamy Val da Camp. The mountain valley borders with Italy along three sides; in summers, a bus line takes you to the Saoseo cabin from Sfazù, situated on the road going up to the Bernina Pass. From the refuge, it is just a short stroll to the lake that many consider being the most beautiful mountain lake in the Grisons. The area has become popular through its manifold hiking trails. It is fantastic to dip one's feet in the water here, at an altitude of 2,028 meters. The clear waters are tempting – but only the very brave will dare to go for a swim as the water is piercingly cold from the glacial meltwaters that give it its fascinating colours. Those who stay longer will be rewarded: As the sun sets behind the mountain range of the Bernina massif, there is a display of colours that can only be described with one word: Saoseo! ◆

The Val di Campo valley forks off from the road going up to the Bernina Pass at Sfazù, at 25 km from Pontresina. Buses to Sfazù run all-year-round from Pontresina and Poschiavo. From June to October, bus route into the valley to the Rifugio Saoseo (Swiss Alpine Club, SAC) that serves excellent meals. Bei der Alp Suvretta säumen erst ein paar Büsche den Wegrand, bald sind es auch Föhren, Arven und sogar Laubbäume. Der Weg hinunter zum Suvrettasee verlangt volle Konzentration. Die Landschaft ist karg und gerade deshalb so grandios - kaum ein Geruch ist wahrzunehmen. In den Ritzen der Steine setzen sich dennoch Pflanzen fest; jeden Frühling nehmen sie von Neuem ihren Überlebenskampf auf, um uns im Spätsommer mit ihrer Blütenpracht zu belohnen NORDWÄRTS GEHT ES DURCH DAS VAL SUVRETTA DA SAMEDAN.

Der alte Alpweg mit seinen hunderten von Steinstufen ist ein wahrer Spielplatz für Biker. Immer wieder führt die Fahrt durch kleine Bergbäche und mit jedem Höhenmeter, den wir vernichten, wird die Vegetation vielfältiger. Die endlosen

It has snowed overnight; the cold wind blowing on Piz Nair leaves no doubt that summer is past its peak. 13 kilometres of single tracks lie ahead of us, down dusty mountain sides, over pastures, through mountain streams and woods until we reach the historic railway line in Val Bever.

«SNOW PURIFIES THE AIR,» THE LOCALS SAY.

At times, the air will be so clean that visibility is beyond 100 kilometres, and you can positively smell the snow. You'll never go wrong wearing long sleeves and trousers at 3,000 metres – not only after it just snowed. THERE'S NO TIME TO REMAIN DROWSY:

As we reach the Alp Suvretta, shrubs start lining our path; next, we are amidst pines and other evergreens, and even non-coniferous trees. The single track has turned into a gravel road and the brook into a river, which runs in cascades down to Val Bever. WE TURN A CORNER AND FIND OURSELVES IN FRONT OF THE SPINAS INN,

a cosy, welcoming place. Some will take the train from here; the railway that pioneers brought to the Engadin over one hundred years ago. We are back in the valley. ●

At 3,000 metres, the climate is harsh, even in summer. The colouring of the rock formations alternates between greys, and reds, and greens. In-between, moss will sprout and an occasional flower.

HOME-GROWN TEAMWORK As every year, the Skiservice Magazine was designed and produced by a team of locals. The valley not only served as backdrop to our photo shoots, it is also home and workplace to most, if not all, of the people who contributed in some form to the magazine. We thank all of them for making this magazine happen – without their experience and their attention to details the high quality we achieved would not have been possible. We would also like to sincerely thank our partners in the hospitality industry, our suppliers, and our advertisers. We would like to say a special thank you to the manager and supervisor of the project, Gian Reto Furger of Design Terminal and his team, to Gian Andri Giovanoli and Semira Bontognali for the photo shoots, Christian Gartmann for the stories and texts and Isabel Wenger for the translations.
