AN ALL-ROUND SUCCESS Pros and biking schools alike are looking forward to the reopening this summer of the pump track and the skill park on the grounds of the Signalbahn’s bottom station in St. Moritz Bad. The two popular circuits were built on the initiative of Skiservice and Engadin St. Moritz Mountains for the first time last summer. Der Argentinier Pablo Seewald (24) ist einer der besten Downhiller Europas. Das Biken brachte ihn ins Engadin. Hier hat er seine Trainingsbasis und neue Heimat gefunden.
Pablo war fünfzehn, als er sich vom kleinen Lohn, den er sich im Geschäft seines Vaters verdiente, sein erstes richtiges Mountainbike kaufte. Es sollte sein Leben verändern. Schon immer war er Rad gefahren, in seiner Heimatstadt Bariloche in den argentinischen Anden tun das alle. Pablo wollte mehr: Zu Fuss schob er sein neues Bike den Cerro Otto hoch und dann begann die Abfahrt seines Lebens. «Ich war nur zwei Minuten unterwegs, aber ich liebte jede Sekunde. So etwas hatte ich noch nie erlebt.» Downhill war fortan Pablos Disziplin; schon bald gewann er Rennen um Rennen und mit neunzehn war er bereits argentinischer Meister. «Dieser Titel macht mich immer noch stolz», sagt Pablo, der heute zu den Top 20 im Downhill-Europacup gehört. Es gibt sie, die Abfahrten bei denen alles stimmt: Pablos erste Fahrt am Cerro Otto war eine solche und dann seine Siegesfahrt bei den Crankworx im kanadischen Whistler Mountain 2011. Pablo

ander zu verbinden.» Pablos Rennsaison dauert von Mai bis September. Dann ist er viel unterwegs. Ins Engadin kommt er nicht nur wegen seiner jungen Familie immer gern zurück: «Dieses Tal hat alles, um die beste Bike-Destination der Welt zu sein. Die Natur ist einmalig, der Untergrund geht von felsig bis weich. Das Engadin verlangt Dir alles ab und macht Dich bei jeder Abfahrt zu einem noch besseren Biker.»
DIESES TAL HAT ALLES, UM DIE BESTE BIKEDESTINATION DER hatte sein geliebtes Patagonien inzwischen verlassen. In Argentinien hatte er alles gewonnen und in Europa und Nordamerika sind die Rennserien professioneller. Pablo ist einer, der sich weiterentwickeln will; Menschlich wie sportlich. «Mit den Jahren lernst Du, Deine Grenzen einzuschätzen. Da und dort überschreitest Du sie auch – das kann ganz schön weh tun.» Vor einem Jahr wurde Pablo Vater eines Sohnes. «Die Verantwortung, Vater zu sein, ist bei den Rennen keine Belastung für mich», sagt er und schränkt gleich ein: «Aber ich respektiere meine
Grenzen vielleicht etwas mehr als früher.» In die Schweiz kam er über einen Onkel, der ihm einen Job als Heizungsmonteur verschaffte. Dort lernte er einen St. Moritzer kennen, der ihn zu Skiservice ins Engadin brachte. Im Winter arbeitet er in der Skiwerkstatt, wo Nacht für Nacht bis zu 2'000 Skis und Snowboards präpariert werden. Im Sommer ist er Fahrradmechaniker bei Skiservice – wenn er nicht gerade Rennen fährt. «Conradin Conrad hat mich sofort verstanden: er fuhr früher selber Skirennen und weiss, was es heisst, Beruf und Sport mitein-
WELT ZU SEIN. Um sich für die Rennen vorzubereiten, fährt Pablo viele Enduro Strecken. Vom Piz Nair durch das Val Suvretta bis vor seine Haustür ist eine seiner häufigsten Touren. Seine Lieblingsabfahrt ist aber die Strecke vom Lago Bianco auf dem Berninapass nach Poschiavo. «Die Tour ist nichts für Anfänger. Sie beginnt zwar brav, wird dann aber immer wilder. Hier kann ich volle 40 Minuten intensiv biken,» sagt er strahlend. «40 Minuten pures Vergnügen.» Wie damals, am Cerro Otto ob Bariloche. ◆

At 24, Argentine Pablo Seewald is one of Europe's best downhill bikers. Biking is what brought him to the Engadin – the place that became his new home and training base.
Pablo was fifteen when he bought his first real mountain bike, investing the small salary he earned at his father's shop. It would change his life. He had been riding a bicycle all his life; in his Argentinian hometown, Bariloche everyone cycled. But Pablo wanted more: He pushed his bike all the way up Cerro Otto and set off on the descent of his life. «The ride took just two minutes, but I loved every second of it.» From this day on, downhill was his discipline. Soon after, he began winning races, one after the other, and at nineteen, he had become Argentinian champion. «I'm still immensely proud of this title,» says Pablo, who by now counts among the top 20 in the iXS European Downhill Cup. There are those perfect descents: Pablo's first dash down Cerro Otto was one of them, and then the ride that brought him the title at the Crankworx in Whistler Mountain, Canada, in 2011. By then, Pablo had left his beloved Patagonia. In Argentina, he had won everything there was to win; and he was drawn to the more professional race series in Europe and North America. Pablo is the kind who wants to evolve, both as a man and a sportsman. «As you grow older, you develop a better feel for your limits. Once in a while, you will go over your limits, too – but that can hurt pretty bad.» His first child, a boy, was born a year ago. «Knowing you're a dad, and the responsibility that comes with it doesn't burden me,» he says, only to add: «But I might pay attention to my limits a bit more than I used to.» It was his uncle that brought him to Switzerland, by helping him

get a job with a heating engineering company. There, he met a guy from St. Moritz, who brought him to Skiservice in the Engadin. In winters, he works at their ski workshop, where up to 2000 skis and snowboards are groomed every night. In summers, he works as a bicycle mechanic with Skiservice – when he's not on tour, that is. «Conradin Conrad understood my situation straight away: he used to do competitive ski racing, so he knows first-hand what it means to combine work and a sports career.» Pablo's competition season lasts from May to September. He will be on the road a lot in those months. His young family isn't the only thing that draws him back to the Engadin: «This valley has everything it takes to become the best bike destination in the world. Its natural environment is unique; the terrain can be anything between rocky and soft. The Engadin demands all of your efforts; after every run, you come down a better biker than before.»
THIS VALLEY HAS EVERYTHING IT TAKES TO BECOME THE BEST BIKE DESTINATION IN THE WORLD To prepare for his races, Pablo does a lot of enduro tracks. From Piz Nair through Val Suvretta up to his doorstep is one of the tours he does most. His favourite downhill course, though, is the ride from Lago Bianco on the Bernina Pass down to Poschiavo. «It's not for beginners, mind you. The route may seem kid's stuff at first, but it gets wilder and wilder. Here, I can bike full-on for 40 minutes,» he says beaming. «40 minutes of sheer bliss.» Like that time, at Cerro Otto above Bariloche. ●

Einst als Vergnügen alter Leute abgetan, ist Wandern zum Trend geworden. Gestresste Städter geniessen die Langsamkeit in der Fortbewegung, bei der man auch etwas für seine Fitness tut.

Die Fahrt mit dem Sessellift von Pontresina auf die Alp Languard hat es in sich: zuerst geht es über die Skiwiese, die zu einer ganz besonderen Weide geworden ist: Dort, wo sich im Winter die Kinder tummeln, grasen im Frühling regelmässig Steinböcke; mitten im Dorf und beobachtet von zahlreichen Schaulustigen. Bald klettert der Lift durch den Arven- und Föhrenwald steil nach oben. Rechts eröffnet sich die Aussicht ins Val Roseg und den Piz Corvatsch. Geradeaus trägt der Piz Palü seine dicke Schnee- und Eiskappe majestätisch auf seinen breiten Schultern und links weiden Kühe, welche die regionale Käserei mit Milch für ihren Alpkäse versorgen. Oben angekommen lockt gleich neben der Bergstation das Ausflugsrestaurant Alp Languard. Aber es muss warten - schliesslich sind wir zum Wandern hier.
ERSTE BERGBAHN GRAUBÜNDENS Das Engadin bietet unzählige schöne Wanderungen: Sage und schreibe 580 Kilometer misst das Wanderwegnetz unseres Hochtals. Der Genuss ist vielfältig: Vom einfachen Spaziergang über die anspruchsvolle Rundwanderung bis zur veritablen Bergtour kann man

hier alles erleben. Die Alp Languard auf 2200 Metern ist ein sehr guter Ort, um das Wandern im Engadin zu beginnen. Gemütlich und ohne allzu grosse Steigung führt von hier der «Höhenweg» nach Muottas Muragl. Der Aussichts- und Genussberg des Engadins wurde schon 1907 mit einer Bergbahn erschlossen – der ersten in Graubünden. Unter Kennern genauso beliebt ist der Weg von der Alp Languard zur Paradis-Hütte auf 2540 Metern am Fusse des Piz Albris. Am Wegrand begeistert nicht nur die Alpenflora, wer mit dem Feldstecher Murmeltiere, Steinböcke und Gemsen sucht, kommt voll auf seine Kosten. Die Hütte ist bekannt für ihre himmlisch guten Kuchen; danach geht’s im Zickzack wieder hinunter nach Pontresina. Wer es deutlich steiler mag, nimmt von der Alp Languard den Aufstieg auf die Segantinihütte unter die Wanderschuhe. Spätestens hier wird klar, warum gutes Schuhwerk bei jeder Wanderung sinnvoll ist. Der Weg führt steil den Berg hinauf und allzu schnell knickt man mit dem Fussgelenk ab. Um Verletzungen zu vermeiden sollten die Sprunggelenke auch bei leichten Wanderungen gut gestützt sein. Einmal oben angekommen, wird man auf der Terrasse der Hütte von der wohl spektakulärsten Panoramasicht des Engadins verwöhnt: Hier, auf 2731 Metern, schuf der Maler Giovanni Segantini Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts seine weltbekannten Panoramabilder. Ein Rundblick vom Berninapass bis zur Engadiner Seenplatte macht schnell klar, warum Segantini genau hier malen wollte. Alp Languard, Paradis- und Segantinihütte sind nur drei von vielen Dutzend Hütten in den Engadiner Bergen und die Auswahl an Wegen ist riesig. Gut ausgerüstet sind Wanderungen im Engadin ein Traum. Wer zu Fuss die Langsamkeit entdeckt, entdeckt auch das Engadin ganz neu. Eine Faszination, die einen nicht mehr so bald los lässt. ◆

Once scorned as the pastime of the elderly, hiking has become all the rage. Stressed-out city dwellers are enjoying the unhurried mobility, while still doing something for their fitness.
DISCOVERING STEP BY STEP THE ENGADIN IS A MECCA FOR HIKING ENTHUSIASTS.
Riding up on the chairlift to the Alp Languard from Pontresina is a treat in itself: the ride first takes you over a ski slope that has turned into a very special meadow: where kids romp about in wintertime, ibexes will come to graze in springtime – right in the centre of the village and seemingly undisturbed by the many who come to watch. Next, the lift will make a steep climb through the pine forest. The view opens up towards the Val Roseg and the Piz Corvatsch on the right. Straight ahead, the Piz Palu with his broad snow-icy shoulders will take your breath away, and, to your left, you will see the cows graze that provide the milk to the regional dairy for their cheese speciality. Once you reach the top, you may well be tempted by the inviting Alp Languard eatery right next door – but it will have to wait. After all, we have come to hike.
THE FIRST MOUNTAIN RAILWAY IN THE GRISONS The Engadin offers myriad beautiful hikes: a whopping 580 kilometres of hiking trails criss-cross our alpine valley, offering anything from a leisurely stroll to a demanding trek to a veritable mountain hike.

The Alp Languard at 2200 metres is a perfect spot to start a hike in the Engadin. Along a gently sloping path, the «Höhenweg» will take you to Muottas Muragl. The mountaintop lookout is one of the Engadine’s old-time excursion favourites: the funicular up to the top was built in 1907, making it the canton's first-ever mountain railway. Another less well-known favourite is the hike from Alp Languard to the Paradis cabin at 2540 metres nestled at the foot of the Piz Albris. The fascination of the Alpine flora along the route will compete with the thrill of spotting a marmot, steinbock or chamois through your binoculars. The mountain hut is famed for its fruit pies; later on, zigzag your way back down to Pontresina. Those who prefer a steep climb will do up their hiking boots and head for the Segantini cabin from Alp Languard. Here, if not before, it will become apparent why proper footwear is a sensible choice for any hike. The way up the mountain is steep, and twisting one's ankle may be quick in this terrain. Providing support and stability for your ankle will help prevent foot injury and is recommended even for an easy hike. At the top, from the terrasse of the cabin, you will be spoilt with a panoramic vista that may well be the most spectacular sight in all of the Engadin. Here, at 2731 metres above sea level, local artist Giovanni Segantini painted his world-famous panoramas. Taking in the unbroken view over the Bernina Pass and the string of lakes along the Engadine valley, you will understand why Segantini wanted to paint at this very spot. The Alp Languard, the Paradis and the Segantini hut are just three of many dozens of cabins in the Engadin mountains, and there is a tremendous choice of trails. Hiking in the Engadin is a dream come true, provided you have the right gear. Discovering the slowness of walking is also to re-discover the Engadin. A fascination that won't let go of you anytime soon. ●

At an altitude of 1800 metres, this is perfectly normal. Even we locals want to enjoy the summer first though.
