White Turf gilt als geschichtsträchtiger und international renommierter Top-Event of Switzerland, welcher auch dieses Jahr, am 12., 19. und 26. Februar 2017, mit Höchstleistungen und Leidenschaft direkt auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee zum Leben erweckt wird. Ein facettenreicher Event, gebaut für wenige Tage auf einem hochalpinen gefrorenen See, der nicht nur packenden Pferderennsport zelebriert, sondern eben auch sämtliche Sinne seiner Besucher intensiv zu begeistern weiss. Nachhaltig attraktiv und visionär zugleich wurde der White Turf 2017 im Führungsteam geplant und vorausschauend in die Schneebahnen eingespurt. The White Turf is considered as a history-charged and internationally renowned top event of Switzerland, and will once again bring the frozen lake of St. Moritz to life with peak performances and passion, on 12th, 19th and 26th February 2017. A multifaceted event set up for a few days on a high alpine frozen lake, not only to celebrate thrilling horseraces, but also to intensely enthuse all the senses of the visitors. Moreover, it needs innovative minds in the background who understand how to keep traditions and create at the same time innovative features indicating new directions for today and the future. The 2017 White Turf was planned by the management team to be sustainably attractive and visionary, as well as proactively integrated on the snow-covered racetrack. The two main sponsors, Credit Suisse and BMW (Schweiz) AG, commit themselves with great enthusiasm to the passionate horseracing sport. They cooperate actively in creating the structure of the White Turf and act therefore as guarantors of a diversified meeting. To strengthen the longterm safeguarding of the event, the Racing Association of St. Moritz has succeeded in attracting a further main sponsor for the international horseraces of St. Moritz. LONGINES is the name of the new partner who for many years, with its philosophy and its commitment, has been the number one sponsor in horseracing sports throughout the world. Einheimische und Feriengäste, prominente Persönlichkeiten sowie Besitzer, Trainer und Jockeys – sie alle prägen das einmalige Ambiente beim White Turf und machten auch die 109. Austragung der internationalen Pferderennen auf Eis zum gesellschaftlich-sportlichen Winterhöhepunkt. Galopp- und Trabrennen sowie der Publikumsmagnet Skikjöring wechselten sich an den Rennsonntagen im 30 Minuten-Takt ab. Die Weltexklusivität beim White Turf, die „Credit Suisse Skikjöring“-Rennen, begeistert die Zuschauer jeweils ganz besonders, denn hier lassen sich Fahrer auf Skiern von einem unberittenen Vollblutpferd bei Geschwindigkeiten bis zu 50 km/h über die 2’700 m lange Strecke ziehen. Mut, Kondition, Kraft und skifahrerisches Können entscheiden, wer über die drei Rennsonntage die meisten Punkte sammelt und sich für ein Jahr lang „König des Engadins“ nennen darf. Bereits vor Beginn der Rennen und in den Pausen boten Livemusik, Kulinarik, Kunst, Kultur und ein Kinderparadies sowie Shopping und Showeinlagen ein abwechslungsreiches Rahmenprogramm für die ganze Familie in der 130’000 m² grossen Zeltstadt auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee.

IN 2016, NOBLE THOROUGHBREDS FROM ALL PARTS OF EUROPE AND INTERNATIONAL JOCKEYS, AS WELL AS A FANTASTIC ACCOMPANYING PROGRAMME, ONCE AGAIN ENTHRALLED GUESTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD ON THE FROZEN LAKE OF ST. MORITZ. Locals and holidaymakers, prominent figures as well as owners, trainers and jockeys – they all characterise the exceptional ambiance at the White Turf, and have made a sporting and social winter highlight of the 109th hosting of the international horseraces on ice and snow. Gallop and trotting races as well as the major attraction,
the Skikjöring, alternated every thirty minutes on the race Sundays. Every year, the world-exclusive feature at the White Turf, the Credit Suisse Skikjöring races, particularly enthral the spectators, when drivers on skis are pulled by riderless thoroughbreds at speeds of up to 50km/h, over a distance of 2,700m. Courage, condition, stamina and skiing skills decide who will collect the most points, and thus be named, for a whole year, ‘King of the Engadine’. Prior to the start of the races and during the intervals, live music, culinary delicacies, art, culture and a children’s paradise, as well as shopping and show interludes offered a varied accompanying programme for the whole family in the 130,000sq.m. tent city on the frozen lake of St. Moritz.

Mit Preisgeldern von insgesamt rund CHF 500’000.übertrifft der White Turf alle im Schweizer Rennsport sonst üblichen Gewinnsummen. Der als EuropaChampionat auf Schnee ausgeschriebene „Grosser Preis von St. Moritz“, ist mit CHF 111’111.- das höchstdotierte Rennen der Schweiz; beim „Grand Prix BMW“ werden CHF 30’000.- vergeben.
With a total prize money of around 500,000 CHF, the White Turf surpasses all winning amounts usually offered in Swiss racing sports. The ‘Grand Prix of St. Moritz’, organised as the European championship on snow, is, with 111,111 CHF the most richly endowed race of Switzerland. Furthermore, 30,000 CHF is awarded at the ‘Grand Prix BMW’.
Für einen ganz besonderen Farbtupfer sorgten die beiden Araberrennen. Dabei stieg der Stern der von Raphael Lingg gerittenen Nil Kamla auf und überraschte selbst Trainerin Franziska Aeschbacher und ihren Ehemann Urs Aeschbacher als Besitzer mit einem Sieg. Zum Finale sass Anna van den Troost im Sattel der fünfjährigen Stute und gewann auch das Amazonenrennen.
The two Arab races provided a very special feature. They brought Nil Kamla, ridden by Raphael Lingg, into the limelight, surprising by her victory even the owners, trainer Franziska Aeschbacher and her husband Urs Aeschbacher. In the finale, Anna van den Troost sat in the saddle of the five-year old mare, and also won the amazons’ race.
Das Meeting 2016 durfte mit dem Sieger des 77. Gübelin Grosser Preis von St. Moritz seinen Abschluss finden, wobei der langjährige Freund und Förderer des White Turf Freiherr Christian von der Recke den Sieger satteln durfte. Jungleboogie und Christian wurden für Vertrauen, Einsatz und Mut unter wirklich nicht einfachen Bedingungen belohnt.
The 2016 meeting ended with the 77 th Gübelin Grand Prix of St. Moritz and the victory of Jungleboogie, proudly saddled by the longstanding friend and promoter of the White Turf, Freiherr Christian von der Recke. He and Jungleboogie were rewarded for their confidence, dedication and courage in truly awful weather conditions. 3

Das waren die Worte des deutschen Trainers Christian von der Recke zur irischen Trainerlegende John Oxx, angesichts einiger kurzfristiger Nichtstarter vor dem Gübelin 77. Grosser Preis von St. Moritz. Tatsächlich gewann der von ihm betreute Jungleboogie das sportlich wertvollste Rennen am Finaltag von White Turf 2016 unter Rene Piechulek („Ich hatte schon zu Beginn der Geraden ein sehr gutes Gefühl“) in souveräner Manier. So konnte sich Christian von der Recke sogar als Wahrsager feiern lassen: Im White TurfTV hatte er Jungleboogie bereits einige Tage zuvor zu seinem Favoriten erklärt.

These were the words of German trainer Christian von der Recke, talking about the Irish trainer legend John Oxx, as he was considering some last-minute cancellations before the Gübelin 77th Grand Prix of St. Moritz. The fact is that Jungleboogie, the horse he trains, won the most valuable sporting race confidently under Rene Piechulek (‘I already had a very good feeling at the beginning of the straight’) on the final race day of the 2016 White Turf. And Christian von der Recke could even be celebrated as a fortune-teller: on White Turf TV he had proclaimed Jungleboogie as his favorite a few days earlier. 9

Die Kooperationen treten an allen drei Renntagen von White Turf 2017 zu Tage. Zum Auftakt wird der „GP Wrocławski Tor Wyścigów Konnych Partynice“ ausgetragen, was die Zusammenarbeit mit Polen – und hier speziell mit der Rennbahn in Breslau – dokumentiert. Damit soll auch das mögliche Interesse für Starter aus Polen in St. Moritz geweckt werden. Mit sichtlicher Begeisterung erfreuten sich die Vertreter des türkischen Jockey-Clubs „Türkiye Jokey Kulübü“, als sie im Jahre 2016 erstmals ihr Rennen präsentierten. Nun gibt es am mittleren Rennsonntag mit der „GP Christoffel Bau Trophy supported by the Jockey Club of Turkey“ ein Wiedersehen mit den Gästen aus der Türkei. Der dritte Rennsonntag bringt mit dem „Preis White Turf Jockey Club supported by the Pardubice Racecourse, Czech Republic” eine Premiere mit sich. Erstmals zeigt sich eine Organisation aus Tschechien auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee, wo tschechische Pferde in der Vergangenheit immer wieder an den Ablauf gekommen sind. Bereits sehr viel länger besteht die Zusammenarbeit mit der Rennbahn Berlin-Hoppegarten und ihrem Eigner Gerhard Schöningh. Der „GP Passugger supported by the Rennbahn Berlin Hoppegarten“ beschliesst die White TurfSaison 2017.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION WITH FOREIGN ORGANISATIONS PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HORSE RACING SPORTS. AND ST. MORITZ IS NO EXCEPTION SINCE ITS GUESTS COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.
The cooperation comes to light on all three race days of the 2017 White Turf. To start with, the ‘GP Wrocławski Tor Wyścigów Konnych Partynice’ will be held, thus highlighting the cooperation with Poland – and particularly with the Breslau racecourse. This is also to encourage interest in starters from Poland to participate in St. Moritz. The representatives of the Turkish jockey club ‘Türkiye Jokey Kulübü’ came along with obvious enthusiasm when they took part in their first race back in 2006. This time the guests from Turkey will be back on the second race Sunday with the ‘GP Christoffel Bau Trophy supported by the Jockey Club of Turkey’. The third race Sunday will present a premiere with the ‘White Turf Jockey Club Prize supported by Pardubice Racecourse, Czech Republic’. It will be the first time that an organisation from the Czech Republic will appear on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, where Czech horses have participated time and again in the past. However, the cooperation with the Berlin-Hoppegarten racecourse and its owner Gerhard Schöningh has existed for a longer period. The ‘Grand Prix Passugger supported by the Berlin Hoppegarten racecourse’ will conclude the 2017 White Turf season.
