Februar 2016, zu den Internationalen Pferderennen White Turf auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee begrüssen zu dürfen. Hochstehender Pferderennsport mit internationaler Beteiligung, kulinarische Höhenflüge, anregende Kunstdarbietungen und selbstverständlich ein Sehen und Gesehenwerden erwarten Sie wieder in einem Ambiente von Märchenweltformat. Der White Turf engagierte im letzten Jahr ein prominentes Duo aus der Welt der Haute Couture und Coiffure: Designer Peter George D’Angelino Tap und Jürg Oschwald, Eigentümer des Hairstyle- und Beauty-Salons «Figaro St. Moritz», entwarfen traumhaft edle Roben und extravagante Frisuren für die Ehrendamen. Von Kopf bis Fuss bis ins kleinste Detail feinsinnig gestylt, verwandelten die «Models» den zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee in einen Laufsteg – und stahlen bei der Preisverleihung den eigentlichen Siegern der Pferderennen beinahe die Show. Mit ihren Kreationen haben sich Oschwald und D’Angelino Tap bereits zuvor einen Namen gemacht. So verantworteten die beiden beispielsweise das Styling der Darsteller bei den Opernaufführungen «Nozze di Figaro» und «Anna Bolena» im Hotel Waldhaus, Sils-Maria.

Last year, the White Turf employed a prominent duo from the world of haute couture and coiffure: the designer Peter George D’Angelino Tap and Jürg Oschwald, owner of the hairstyle and beauty salon ‘Figaro St. Moritz’. They designed heavenly gowns and extravagant hairstyles for the maids-of-honour. Subtly styled to the slightest detail from head to toe, the ‘models’ transformed the frozen lake of St. Moritz into a catwalk – and almost stole the show from the actual winners of the horse races during the prize-giving ceremony. Jürg Oschwald and Peter George D’Angelino Tap had already made a name for themselves with their creations. For instance, they were responsible for the styling of the performers in the ‘Nozze di Figaro’ and ‘Anna Bolena’ operas that took place at the Hotel Waldhaus in Sils-Maria.

Zum ersten Mal in der über 100-jährigen Geschichte des White Turf gewann am 22. Februar 2015 mit der aus Samedan stammenden Leta Joos eine Frau das weltexklusive Skikjöring. Decorum hiess ihr vierbeiniger Partner, der mit grossem Kampfeswillen dafür sorgte, dass seine Fahrerin in eine bislang von Männern dominierte Sportart eindrang. Damit hielt Leta Joos Einzug in die Annalen des White Turf.
Die beiden Siege mit Dreamspeed an den ersten zwei Rennsonntagen reichten aus, damit sich Franco Moro den bei den Einheimischen so begehrten Titel als König des Engadins zum siebten Mal in seiner Karriere sichern konnte. Die Krone bekommt jener Fahrer beim Skikjöring aufgesetzt, der die höchste Punktzahl in der Credit Suisse Skikjöring-Trophy erreicht.
FIRST LADY
On 22nd February 2015, for the first time in the more than 100-year history of the White Turf, with Leta Joos from Samedan a lady won the world exclusive Skikjöring. ‘Decorum’ was the name of her four-legged partner, ensuring with his great fighting spirit that his lady driver would make a great entry into a sport so far dominated by gents. In this way, Leta Joos earned a place in the annals of the White Turf.
KING OF THE ENGADINE
The two victories with Dreamspeed on the first two race Sundays were sufficient for Franco Moro to ensure for the seventh time in his career that he won the title King of the Engadine, which is highly popular among the natives. Every year at the Skikjöring, the driver who has gained the highest number of points in the Credit Suisse Skikjöring Trophy competition is crowned.
RÜCKBLICK ARABERRENNEN
Für einen ganz besonderen Farbtupfer sorgten die beiden Araberrennen. Dabei wiederholte Alibaba del Sol unter Daniele Porcu seinen Vorjahressieg, musste dann aber zum Finale mit dem Ehrenplatz vorliebnehmen. So stieg der Stern von Al Janoob aus dem schwedischen Stall von Maria Hagman Eriksson auf. Im Sattel sass mit Astrid Wullschleger eine Amazone aus der Schweiz, die im November 2015 eine Einladung zum Endlauf nach Abu Dhabi erhielt, um dort auf Najm Alemarat erneut zu gewinnen und die Gesamt-Trophy für sich zu entscheiden.
ARAB RACE REVIEW
The two Arab races provided a very special touch of colour. On the occasion, Alibaba del Sol under Daniele Porcu repeated last year’s victory, but had to be content with second place in the final. This was due to the ascension of Al Janoob from the Swedish stable of Maria Hagman Eriksson. Astrid Wullschleger, a Swiss horsewoman, sat in the saddle. In November 2015, she received an invitation to Abu Dhabi, where she was once again victorious, this time with Najm Alemarat, and won the entire trophy.
RÜCKBLICK HÜRDENRENNEN
Erstmals nach einer 21-jährigen Unterbrechung wurden im Jahre 2015 wieder zwei Hürdenrennen auf dem St. Moritzersee gelaufen – fürwahr eine Bereicherung im Programm, mit ganz besonderer Abwechslung für das Publikum. Der Weltmeister auf Schnee in dieser Disziplin heisst Vicomte Alco, aus dem Stall von Andreas Schärer. Unter Anthony Lecordier gewann er beide Hürdenrennen und lag damit in der Punktewertung klar vorn. 2016 wird es mit dem World Snow Hurdle Championship Final bei White Turf wieder ein Hürdenrennen geben.
HURDLE RACE REVIEW
In 2015, for the first time after a period of 21 years, two hurdle races were run on the frozen lake of St. Moritz – providing true enrichment of the programme and a very special diversity for the spectators. The world champion on snow in this discipline is called Vicomte Alco, from the stables of Andreas Schärer. Under Anthony Lecordier, he won both hurdle races and thus clearly took the lead on the points table. In 2016, with the World Snow Hurdle Championship Final, a hurdle race will again be held at the White Turf. 3

EHRENPREISE 2016: KUNSTVOLLE UNIKATE
Der slowakische Maler Dušan Sekela und die Mitglieder des Vereins «Kunsthandwerk Engadin» gestalten jeweils die White Turf Ehrenpreise für Besitzer, Reiter und Trainer in diesem Jahr. In den Gemälden von Sekela symbolisieren die «Strahlen» in einer unvergleichlichen Dynamik den Pulsschlag, die Kraft und das Tempo der edlen Rennpferde auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee. Die Engadiner Kunsthandwerksgemeinschaft vereint in ihrer glücksbringenden Hufeisen-Skulptur die aussergewöhnlichen Fertigkeiten der lokalen Künstler Curdin Niggli (Kunstschmied), Reto Grond (Holzbildhauer), Tanja Leipold und Regula Gredig (Keramik- und Tontöpferei) sowie die Verarbeitung verschiedenster Materialien.
2016 PRIZES: UNIQUE ARTISTIC PIECES
The Slovakian artist Dušan Sekela and the members of the Engadine handicraft association have created this year’s different White Turf prizes for the owners, the riders and the trainers. In the paintings of Dušan Sekela, ‘beams’ symbolise with incomparable dynamic force the pulse, the power and the speed of the noble race horses on the frozen lake of St. Moritz. The Engadine handicraft association unites in a lucky horseshoe sculpture the exceptional skills of the local artists Curdin Niggli (artist blacksmith), Reto Grond (wood sculptor), Tanja Leipold and Regula Gredig (ceramics and clay pottery), displaying their workmanship in various materials.

Neu kooperiert der White Turf mit dem «Wrocław Racecourse» in Polen und dem «Türkiye Jokey Kulübü» in Istanbul. As a new feature, the White Turf is cooperating with the ‘Wrocław Racecourse’ in Poland and the ‘Türkiye Jokey Kulübü’ course in Istanbul. NIGHT TURF ST. MORITZ
FRIDAY, 5TH FEBRUARY 2016 PRIOR TO THE FIRST WHITE TURF RACE SUNDAY.
Der White Turf bekam im letzten Jahr eine kleine Schwester: Unter dem Label «Night Turf» veranstaltete der Rennverein St. Moritz die ersten Nachtrennen auf dem St. Moritzersee. Auf der hell beleuchteten Rennbahngeraden kämpften erstmals in der Renngeschichte schnelle Pferde um Ruhm und Ehre bei Nacht auf Eis und Schnee. Mit mehr als 5000 begeisterten Zuschauern auf dem St. Moritzersee war die Premiere ein voller Erfolg. Alles lässt sich bekanntlich steigern – unter diesem Vorzeichen findet das grandiose Spektakel am Freitagabend, 5. Februar 2016, vor dem ersten White Turf Rennsonntag nun zum zweiten Mal statt.
Last year, the White Turf had a little sister. Under the label ‘Night Turf’, the St. Moritz Racing Society organised the first night races on the frozen lake of St. Moritz. For the first time in the history of the races, dashing horses fought for fame and glory on ice and snow in the night, on the brightly illuminated straight. The premiere, watched by more than 5,000 enthusiastic spectators on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, was a huge success. As we all know, everything can be improved, and on this premise the magnificent spectacle will take place this year for the second time on the evening of Friday, 5th February 2016, prior to the first White Turf race Sunday.
Neu wird das ganze Rennoval auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee beleuchtet, so dass offizielle Pferderennen mit Wettbetrieb durchgeführt werden können. Mit ihren hochkarätigen Rennpferden bei den Nachtrennen teilzunehmen, lohnt sich unter diesen Bedingungen für die Besitzer und Jockeys umso mehr! Insgesamt stehen vier Rennen auf dem Programm: das «Trabrennen präsentiert von BMW (Schweiz) AG» und das Flachrennen «LONGINES Sprint Race» sowie das «Legendenrennen präsentiert von Rüegg Cheminée Schweiz AG», an dem ehemalige Spitzenrennreiter in den Sattel steigen. Darüber hinaus wird das berittene «Prominenten-Skikjöring präsentiert von CREDIT SUISSE» für spannende Unterhaltung sorgen: Wagemutige Stars werden sich von berittenen Vollblütern über die Piste aus Eis und Schnee ziehen lassen, und das wohlgemerkt by night.
As a new feature the entire racing oval on the frozen lake of St. Moritz will be illuminated, thus allowing to organise official horse races with betting operations. Under these conditions it will be even more interesting for the owners and the jockeys to participate with their noble race horses in the night races! In all, there are four races on the programme: the ‘Trotting Race presented by BMW (Schweiz) AG’, the flat race ‘LONGINES Sprint Race’ and the ‘Race of Legends presented by Rüegg Cheminée Schweiz AG’, with former top jockeys in the saddle. Furthermore, the mounted ‘Prominent Skikjöring presented by CREDIT SUISSE’ will provide exciting entertainment. Daring stars will be pulled across the track of ice and snow by mounted thoroughbreds and, mind you, at night.

Besides the race horses, all the visitors with free admission to the frozen lake of St. Moritz, to the tent city and to the grandstand seats, will enjoy an unrivalled funfair. From 4.30 p.m., for big and small alike, it is worth rushing onto the frozen lake of St. Moritz in order to savour the unique atmosphere of the illuminated tent city. In the public catering tents, the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, the Hotel Crystal, the Hotel Saratz and others will make sure the visitors have all they need as regards food and drink. At the end of the races everybody can look forward once again to a spectacular light show in the night sky of St. Moritz. Er galoppierte wie ein Pferd von einem anderen Stern: Fabrino, ein Hengst aus dem Stall von Miroslav Weiss in Zürich-Urdorf, gewann mit erstaunlicher Überlegenheit den Gübelin Grossen Preis von St. Moritz 2015 und liess nicht nur seine Besitzerin, Charlotte Haselbach aus dem Ort Salenstein im Kanton Thurgau, jubeln. Miroslav Weiss war schon beim White Turf Cocktail überzeugt von Fabrino: „Er gewinnt“, meinte er überzeugend und fügte einen Tag später nach dem Rennen hinzu: „Aber keiner wollte mir glauben.“ Es handelte sich um den dritten Sieg von „Miro“ im Engadiner GP, für den in der Vergangenheit schon Treasure Bill und Song of Victory punkteten. Erstaunt äusserte sich auch Jockey Olivier Plaçais über die Art und Weise des Sieges: „Im Schlussbogen lief Fabrino völlig locker an allen Gegnern vorbei und zog früh in Front.“

This was reason enough to rejoice, and not only for the owner, Charlotte Haselbach from the village of Salenstein in the canton of Thurgau. Already at the White Turf cocktail party, Miroslav Weiss was convinced by Fabrino, and said with certainty, ‘He will win’. A day later, after the race, he added: ‘Nobody wanted to believe me’. It was ‘Miro’s’ third Engadine Grand Prix victory; Treasure Bill and Song of Victory were victorious in the past. Jockey Olivier Plaçais also commented on the win with astonishment: ‘In the final bend Fabrino ran in a totally relaxed way, passing all his opponents and leading the field to the end’. 9

JOCKEYS ON SNOW Sie zählen neben den edlen Vollblütern zu den Hauptprotagonisten beim Sport der schnellen Rennpferde – und sind genau wie ihre vierbeinigen Freunde im Rennen immer sichtbar: die Jockeys. In der Regel kleine und drahtige Frauen und Männer, die mit ihrem geringen Gewicht versuchen ihre Pferde so schnell wie möglich zu machen. Auch beim White Turf. Jockeys on Snow. Die Namen vieler Reiter sind immer wieder und in grosser Regelmässigkeit in den Starterlisten des White Turf zu finden. Manche müssen aber fast schon „gezwungen“ werden nach St. Moritz zu kommen. Wie beispielsweise Lennart Hammer-Hansen, der im Jahre 2001 mit Sixtino sogar den Grand Prix gewann, sich unter Rennen auf Schnee aber nichts Gutes vorstellen konnte. Eine „Frostbeule“ nannte ihn damals seine Gattin. Lennart Hammer-Hansen musste die Reise nicht bereuen, fand alles wunderbar und war auch später noch einmal Gast im Engadin – als Jockey on Snow. Doch die Mehrzahl der Reiter reist alljährlich an. Vor allem die ausländischen Teilnehmer wie Olivier Peslier, Andrasch Starke oder auch Eduardo Pedroza geniessen die Tage in den Bergen in aller Regel als Kurzurlaub und verbinden das Angenehme mit dem Nützlichen. Auch Lanfranco Dettori lernte das Feeling des White Turf schon kennen und Lester Piggott reiste bereits als Gast und Repräsentant an. Genau wie bei Besitzern und Trainern dienen das Ambiente, die phantastische alpine Umgebung, das Klima und die berühmte gelbe Sonne vor dem strahlend blauen Himmel als weitere Argumente für den Aufenthalt im Engadin. Unter der Woche geht’s auf die Piste oder einfach zu Fuss durch die Landschaft. Sonntags werden die Pferde beim White Turf geritten. Jockeys on Snow. Doch was ist im Rennen anders als bei den Prüfungen auf Gras? Gerade an kalten und vor allem windigen Tagen spielt die Bekleidung eine wichtige Rolle. Allerdings kommt es oft auf jedes Gramm an, denn ein Pferd muss immer ein bestimmtes im Programm angegebenes Gewicht tragen, das nicht unter- und nicht überschritten werden darf. Die Jockeykleidung selbst ist sehr dünn und so tragen manche schon mal Damenstrümpfe unter der Reithose und leichte Shirts unter der Jockeybluse. Ganz besonders muss zudem die Nasen- und Mundpartie geschützt werden. Jockeys on Snow. Die Taktik spielt ebenfalls eine Rolle, denn der Zustand des Geläufs ändert sich von Renntag zu Renntag. War es in den Nächten vor der Veranstaltung immer bitterkalt, dann können die Rennen fast genauso wie auf Gras bei gutem Boden gelaufen werden. Doch blieb es insgesamt zu mild, wird der Boden tief, weil die Pferdehufe etwas weiter einsinken. Dann heisst es für die Reiter unterwegs immer Anschluss halten an das Vordertreffen, denn zu gross darf der Abstand nicht werden. Aber das wissen sie alle, die Jockeys on Snow.

Apart from the noble thoroughbreds, they are the main protagonists of the sport as they ride their fast race horses – and, just like their four-legged friends, they are always visible during the races: the jockeys. In general they are small, wiry ladies and gents, their low weight allowing their horses to be as fast as possible. At the White Turf, too. Jockeys on snow. The names of a great number of horsemen are regularly part of the White Turf starting lists. But there are some who must almost be ‘forced’ to come to St. Moritz, such as Lennart HammerHansen. At first, races on snow did not really inspire him, although with Sixtino he finally won the Grand Prix in 2001. At that time his wife called him a ‘chilblain’. Lennart Hammer-Hansen did not regret the journey; on the contrary, he found everything wonderful, and came back a few years later to the Engadine – again as a jockey on snow. However, the majority of the riders come every year. Above all, the foreign participants such as Olivier Peslier, Andrasch Starke or Eduardo Pedroza, normally take advantage of the days in the mountains to take a short holiday and thus combine the agreeable with the useful. Lanfranco Dettori, too, was inspired by the White Turf feeling, and Lester Piggott came along, both as a guest and as a representative. Just as the owners and the trainers have found, further arguments for a stay in the Engadine are the ambiance, the fantastic alpine surroundings, the climate and the famous golden sun in a bright blue sky. During the week everybody is on the slopes or just visiting the beautiful landscape on foot. And on the Sundays they race at the White Turf. Jockeys on snow. But what is different about these races compared to the contests on grass? Especially on cold and above all on windy days, the jockey’s garments play an important role. However, each gram counts, because a horse must always carry the weight announced in the programme, it must not be more or less. The jockey’s clothes are very thin and therefore some wear stockings under their breeches or light shirts under their jockey shirt. In particular, the nose and mouth areas must be especially protected. Jockeys on snow. The tactics also play an important role as the conditions of the track change from one race day to the next. If the nights before the event have been bitterly cold, the races can almost take place as though they were run on good grass soil. However, if the temperatures have been mild on the whole, the surface becomes soft and the horses’ hoofs sink in. The riders must then try to keep close to the horses in front of them, the space in between them must not become too big. But they all know that, the jockeys on snow.
