Symbio’s Liquid Aeration Symbio’s Liquid Aeration is a new inorganic oxygen technology that allows oxygen to be sprayed into the rootzone through a standard sprayer without any physical disruption, which will help all turf professionals, provide a better playing surface. It is a complex blend of minerals and microbiology, capable of donating very high numbers of oxygen atoms right through the root-zone profile. This has the effect of stimulating aerobic biological activity more evenly than physical aeration. The importance of maintaining aerobic conditions in the rootzone is well established. The firm sandy root zones of sports surfaces have inherently low levels of available airspace, and can rapidly turn anaerobic through compaction or the water logging effect of rain and applied irrigation in the thatch layer and soil profile. The obvious advantage of aerating with an evenly applied liquid is the lack of physical disruption, which will make an important contribution to revenue and golfer satisfaction with the pressure of constant competitive play.

micro tines, it is often difficult to get sufficiently even aeration to develop the fungal biomass that degrades the thatch (as the case study shows). This new product will deliver oxygen throughout the thatch layer, even in wet conditions, allowing the continued degradation of thatch and survival of essential fungi to help promote fine grasses.

Better rooting Most green keepers have experienced the root systems getting shorter as the rootzone becomes waterlogged in winter. When oxygen runs out the bacteria in the soil start to metabolise an aerobically i.e. without oxygen. Every turf manager is familiar with black layer and the smell of hydrogen sulphide, the visible evidence of this process. However, before black layer becomes evident a lot of adverse changes happen in the rootzone. Many bacteria in the soil are similar to those in the guts of animals. In the absence of oxygen these bacteria use root exudates and thatch to produce small quantities of harmful organic acids, such as valeric acid which gives you the burning sensation when you vomit, acetic acid or vinegar and buteric acid, which makes milk go sour. In some instances, minute quantities of alcohol are also produced. This toxic layer often forms in the waterlogged, dead soil created above the compacted iron bands a few inches below the surface. Roots can not penetrate this toxic layer until either oxygen is introduced to recreate aerobic conditions, or the soil dries out in spring and oxygen gets into the spaces between soil particles.

However, there are many more advantages for the turfcare professional aiming to provide the best possible playing surface. Physical aeration cannot get oxygen evenly into the rootzone. We are all familiar with the uneven surface caused by growth around tine holes in spring and late autumn, and the worry that the release of nutrient will spark off disease, especially if the surface is covered in top dressing that temporarily creates the low oxygen conditions favoured by Fusarium.

Physical aeration, coring and top dressing creates a narrow channel for roots to penetrate but, by adding Liquid Aeration, oxygen is evenly distributed throughout the upper soil profile to prevent black layer and toxic acids from being formed.

Thatch Reduction

Soil, Oxygen and Disease

The supply of inorganic oxygen to the thatch layer, which can be extremely difficult to keep aerobic in wet conditions, significantly improves biological degradation of the thatch and reduces subsequent build up and water retention. Thatch is a food for the fungi that perennial grasses need to thrive.

The use of chemical compounds to supply an inorganic form of oxygen to soil is not new, traditionally these products have either been biocidal, effectively sterilising the rootzone - or been very high in nitrogen based nutrients. Liquid Aeration is neither biocidal, nor loaded with nutrients, so it may tank mixed with almost all organic, biological or inorganic nutrients or additives. It should be noted that physical aeration is very important, especially if hollow coring is required to break though soil pans or clay to permit drainage. For nearly all greens Liquid Aeration will provide the benefits of evenly distributed oxygen throughout the year whilst reducing the costs, disruption and loss of play associated with conventional aeration.

Many green keepers experienced the misfortune, in the very wet August and September of 2008, of seeing poa annua creep back into their greens as the thatch layer built up. This is because the thatch layer became anaerobic and the beneficial fungi essential for the growth of fescue and bent died, creating the bacterial dominant soil favoured by simple annual plants such as poa annua .Unless you can aerate frequently, with a sarrell roller or

Symbio’s Blue Water ACTION

ECOLOGY

Symbio Blue Water is a natural formulation of bacteria, enzymes and buffers contained in a water - soluble sachet.

Blue Water is harmless to pond animal life and to rooted plants. The microbes in Blue Water help to break down the toxic ammonia and nitrite compounds that accumulate in ponds with a large fish or waterfowl population, the use of Blue Water can create a less stressful environment for aquatic animal life.

Some of the species of bacteria in Blue Water use the nitrates and phosphates that stimulate heavy algae growth as their own food source, starving the algae and reducing algae growth. The remaining species break down the organic solids from fish and waterfowl excreta and decaying plant material that results in cloudy water, sludge build - up and foul odours.

Notes: Although Blue Water can be used at any time of the year, it performs best when water temperatures exceed 10°C.

APPLICATION

Symbio Blue Water is best used as an algae preventative.

Symbio Blue Water is supplied in a 200gm sachet for larger lakes and ponds. Symbio Blue Water Junior is supplied in a 30gm sachet for smaller garden ponds, fishponds and water features. The sachets are water -soluble and the required number simply needs to be thrown in evenly around the water body to encourage equal dispersion.

If being used to clear growing algae, up to 4 weeks should be allowed for noticeable results. For flowing ponds and lakes there should be an 80% retention of the water over a 4 week period to allow the product time to work.

DOSAGE For Larger Water Bodies: Apply 1 x 200gm Blue Water sachet per 800m3 (176,000 gallons) per week through the algae growing season. This dose should be doubled for the first week. For smaller water features and fishponds: reduce the dosage accordingly. The dose should be repeated through the algae growing season.

Key Benefits:-

Autumn/Winter 2-0-10 =9%fe+te Our Autumn/Winter fertilizer is designed to aid hardening and help the greens stay a lush green colour during the winter months when they can normally suffer from discolouring due to the conditions. The high potassium content will also help the stress relief and maintain plant count. The mini gran formulation can be dissolved in rainwater so that there is no need to switch on the irrigation to water the product in. If we are suffering extreme wet weather in the winter (which has recently being the case) the added benefit of the slow release means there is no need to go out and apply liquid irons through tractor mounted sprayers which is far from ideal on soft surfaces thus protecting your greens from heavy machine traffic.

FUNGICIDES

Disease Identification guide Fusarium Patch / Pink Snow Mould

Anthracnose

(Microdochium nivale) [formerly Fusarium nivale] Symptoms: Orange-brown patches 2.5 - 5cm across, increase in size under suitable conditions as the disease progresses. Active patches on turf have a distinctive ‘ginger’ appearance and, when viewed early in the morning, creamy white mycelium resembling cotton wool can be seen in the centre and towards the outer edge of the patch. Grass in the active patches is often ‘slimy’. Once the disease has been effectively controlled the scars will remain until there is sufficient grass growth to fill in. The scars have a pale straw coloured appearance and are drier to the touch with no evidence of mycelium. The disease can often become very active under a covering of snow. As the snow melts the large disease patches (sometimes 25 - 50cm across) have a bright ginger ring surrounding a pale pink/straw coloured centre. This form of the disease is known as Pink Snow Mould.

Red Thread / Pink Patch (Laetisaria fuciformis and Limonomyces roseipellis) [formerly classified as a single species: Corticium fuciforme] Symptoms: III defined patched of bleached grass. Pink mycelium is often visible in early morning dew. Close examination with the naked eye will often reveal red needle-like structures, which are attached to the leaf blades. The needles become brittle upon drying and are easily detached allowing fragments to spread the disease. The disease rarely kills the grass plant. The disease was re-classified as a ‘complex’ involving two different fungi which can both occur singly but are more frequently found together: Laetisaria fuciformis - can be isolated from the red needles. Limonomyces roseipellis - forms the pink mycelium.

Dollar Spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpo) Symptoms. Small ‘straw’ coloured, bleached spots typically 10 - 20mm in diamtr; rarely much larger than this. The patches are distinct and circular but can sometimes join together forming larger spots. The diseased grass is usually dry. Close examination of individual grasses near the outer edges of the patch often reveals a dark margin separating the dead straw coloured tissue from the green grass

24

(Colletotrichum graminicola) also known as ‘basal rot of Annual Meadow-grass’ Symptoms. Recent research has identified two significant stages of the disease; a foliar blight that can spread rapidly during the mid-summer months causing considerable discolouration of affected plants. Leaves of individual grass plants turn yellow, with the youngest leaves on each plant appearing red or orange. Under conditions of high moisture during the autumn and spring, the second stage of the disease can occur when the plant rots at the base and is easy to pull from the turf. Examination of the rotting base of the plant shows extensive dark staining and sometimes black reproductive structures can just be seen with the naked eye. (Known as acervuli, these spore bearing structures are little more than the size of a pin head).

Fairy Rings A large number of different fungi are known to cause fairy rings in turf. Fairy Rings are classified into 3 groups. Type 1 is the most damaging. Type 1 eg. Marasmius oreades Symptoms. A ring of dead grass may be seen within a wider ring of stimulated dark green grass. Fruiting bodies are often seen within the dead area and the outer stimulated area. Marasmius oreades is the most common type 1 fairy ring and produces small tan coloured toadstools. The fairy ring fungus can be found some 5 cm below the surface of the grass and can extend to a depth of 30 to 50 cm deep in well established rings. The fungus consumes organic matter in the soil and excretes a waxy substance which has the effect of inhibiting water movement in the immediate vicinity of the fungal hyphae. The type 1 fairy ring fungus also excretes waste products which are toxic to grass. The combination of ‘waterproofing’ and the toxic waste excreted into the soil kills the grass in the area above the fungus

Boxer Mini Pellets give the turf grass manager greater flexibility in the fight against Dry Patch and are a simple and effective way of applying Boxer active wetting agent through a hose end applicator. Pack Size: 6 x 240g Application Rate: Approx 1 pellet to treat 3 greens

Dew Dry Dew Dry is a long-lasting, dew control product, specifically formulated to reduce the accumulation of surface moisture on turf, including dew, guttation fluid and light frost. Application Rate: 6 ltr/Ha Pack Size: 5 ltr

Vitax Ultraflo A once a year treatment. Ultraflo’s highly effective wetting agent persists for up to 12 months. It also reduces water irrigation requirements. Size: 10Ltr Pack Coverage: 2000 m² Amount of Product Required: 50 Ltr/Ha Water Volume Required: 30,000 Ltr/Ha

SELECTIVE HERBICIDES TURF WETTING AGENTS

OARS is a major breakthrough in dealing with water-repellent soils. Many other surfactants and other soil amendments just alleviate the symptoms of soil water repellency. Unlike other surfactants that mask the conditions of water repellency, OARS also removes the cause - the build-up of organic substances that coat the surface of coarse-textured sand particles. Golf course and bowling green superintendents that use OARS will now be equipped to manage water movement problems in their soil profile as well as take corrective action to remove hydrophobic deposits from the soil particle surface. OARS is the ultimate in managing water repellency and localised dry spots .

H2Pro All formulations of H2Pro contain two separate surfactant systems -wetting and spreading agents and long term wetting agents, based on the new Multi-Matrix mode of action. This innovative surfactant chemistry allows applied water to enter the root zone in areas previously affected by Dry Patch allowing the maximum amount of water to enter the root zone. Due to their unique chemistry, the Multi-Matrix surfactants will allow initial wetting of the organic layers but then move down deeper into the root zone. This ensures that after an application of H2Pro, the long-lasting water conservation effects occur throughout the root zone and not just the surface or thatch layers with older wetting agent technologies. Significantly reduces the irrigation requirement of soils.

Fullflow FULLFLOW is a matrix flow surfactant that reduces water repellency in thatch soils. This unique chemistry helps establish and maintain a water movement pattern of uniform downward and lateral flow throughout the rootzone. Size: 5 / 20 / 210Ltr Pack Coverage: 5Ltr -(2703 - 4000) / 20Ltr - (10,811-16,000)m² Amount of Product Required: 12.5 - 18.5 Ltr/Ha Water Volume Required: 700 Ltr/Ha
