Headmasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Message Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family, God has been so very good to Devon Prep. From the day our doors opened in September 1956 until the present moment He has watched over our students, faculty, and staff with His providential care. Through His grace we have been able to bring the benefits of the Piarist educational ministry to over two thousand young men. As a former student and presently as a faculty member and administrator I am privileged to be one of them. Some of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work here on earth is carried out by many wonderful people who have elected to cooperate with His graces. I am both honored and grateful that you are among them. This Annual Report of Gifts 2010-11 is intended to serve as a testament to your efforts. The tremendous generosity of you, our benefactors, has been instrumental in providing the resources for new scholarships and new opportunities for our students. Your kindness has also provided the beautiful new entrance to the school, the interior improvements, the increasingly attractive campus, and so many other things which make Devon Prep such a special experience for our Devon men. Gifts to the Annual Fund sustain us now, and gifts to the Endowment Fund will continue to sustain us for the future. Through our strategic planning for the future, we know that there are many challenges ahead. The economy continues to challenge all of us in obvious ways. We must continue to improve our facilities and at the same time take the necessary steps to preserve our beloved Calasanctius Hall, which is nearing the century mark. We must be able to offer fair compensation and opportunities to our faculty, who along with all of the Piarist Fathers here, carry out the mission of Devon Prep. We must continue to develop our academic programs, equip our athletic teams, and strengthen our extra curricular activities. These programs, teams, and activities are essential in enabling Devon Prep to transform young boys into young men who will go into the world to be of service to God and neighbor. Your gifts to the Annual Fund and to the Endowment Fund are essential in helping us to meet the present and future challenges. Devon Prep Annual Fund Gi s to the Annual Fund are the cornerstone of the School’s development program. These gi s, from trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends, support the current opera ons of the school, providing addi onal resources to enrich the educa onal experiences of our students.

Capital Giving Gi s to the Capital Giving Fund allow us to meet the long‐term goals iden fied in an internal assessment and in our strategic plan. These gi s funded the construc on of Saint Anthony Hall and other campus improvements and will fund an endowment to provide for Devon’s future needs. Please contact the Development Oﬃce to discuss a Capital Fund Gi .

Matching Gi s The easiest way to make your gi to Devon Prep grow is through matching gi s. Donors (or their spouses) employed by companies with matching gi programs can double or triple their contribu ons by designa ng Devon Preparatory School as the recipient of matching gi s.

United Way Devon Prep CYO is eligible to par cipate in the Donor Choice/Specific Care Program of the United Way. During the United Way’s annual campaign, donors may designate a gi to Devon Prep CYO on the Donor Choice pledge/designa on form through Specific Care. Devon Prep CYO is classified as a “non‐member agency,” and recorded as CYO/DEVON PREP, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636. The assigned iden fica‐ on number is consistent from year to year.

Memorial and Tribute Gi s Donors can further educa onal opportuni es at Devon Prep by honoring or memorializ‐ ing a special person or event. Acknowledgment of the gi is made directly to the family or designated individual.

Gi s of Appreciated Property A gi of stock, real estate or other appreciated property can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax advantages to the donor. The full value of the securi es is usually deduc ble, and you may avoid the capital gains tax on the profit.

Matching Gi , Founda ons, and Corporate Grants

Bequests Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to your will. You may wish to consider naming Devon Prep to receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning you can protect your family and also contribute to the financial security of Devon Prep. If you have already considered Devon Prep in your estate plans, please let us know, so that we may count you among the members of The Calasanc an Society.

Gi s in Kind Devon Prep gratefully accepts gi s of supplies, books, and equipment. Tax deduc ons are available for firms and individuals contribu ng gi s in kind to educa onal ins tu ons.

Scholarship Gi s While unrestricted gi s to the Annual Giving Fund provide Devon Prep with opera ng funds to help maintain the quality of its academic programs, scholarship gi s enable the school to award scholarship aid to deserving students. Scholarship gi s can be made to the General Scholarship Fund or to one of the named Scholarship Funds. You can also give or gain a li le immortality while making a las ng impact on future genera ons through the gi of an endowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone you would like to honor.

Educa onal Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) Companies that do business and pay corporate taxes in Pennsylvania may receive substan al tax credits for dona ons to Devon Preparatory School’s student financial aid program. The Educa onal Improvement Tax Credit program is a wonderful opportunity for Devon Preparatory School. Our financial aid program, which provides financial assistance to needy students, is primarily funded by individual contribu ons to the school. Corporate support allows us to oﬀer access to a private school educa on to more students, who may otherwise not be able to a end Devon Prep.

“Dare to be Diﬀerent” was preached to us by our head‐ master Fr. Senye for four years. It’s easy to follow the crowd, to say “yes,” to do what everyone else does. It’s extremely diﬃcult to say “no,” to follow your own footsteps, to believe in yourself, and to follow your own ins ncts. Grandparents & Special Others Day More than 115 Devon Prep students welcomed their grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings and/or friends to the school’s annual Grandparents and Special Others Day. Held in the school’s athle c facility, the day began with a con nental brunch as the guests gathered with their Devon Prep hosts. There they met other students as well as other guests.

A er the brunch they were treated to a presenta on by Devon Prep’s Music Society. Before leaving for the day many of the students took their guests for a tour of the school, to meet teachers and a stop in the school store.

Devon Prep has been holding Grandparents and Special Others Day for more than 10 years and it has proven to be a very popular Thanksgiving tradi on for the students and their guests.

Spring TIDE 2011 Devon Prep Parent’s Associa on raised more than $80,000 at Spring TIDE 2011, which was held on campus on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Over 200 parents, alumni, faculty, staﬀ and friends of Devon a ended this annual event. There were cowboy hats, boots, checkered shirts and scarves every‐where as many of the a endees came dressed for the “Wild Wild West” theme. The food was delicious, the gym and school were beau fully decorated. Cocktails and Hors d’oeuvres were catered by Marie Clare’s Custom Cakes & Catering, and Luigi and Giovanni catered the Pig Roast/Dinner. Many Devon Prep students worked as servers throughout the evening helping with appe zers, dinner, and refreshments. BASKETBALL TEAM WINS DISTRICT TITLE

Devon Prep’s Varsity Basketball Team won the District 1 Class AA championship last spring. In addi on, four players were recognized by the Bicentennial Athle c League (BAL) Independence Division. Duncan Becker and John LaPrise were named to the First Team; Kyle Kohler and Stephen Kohlbrenner were named to the Second Team. The team fin‐ ished their season with a 19‐6 record.

BASEBALL TEAM WINS LEAGUE TITLE

Devon Prep’s Varsity Baseball Team won the 2011 Bicentennial Athle c League (BAL) Championship for the first me in more than 10 years. In addi on Coach Mark Aquilante was named “BAL Coach of the Year.” Also, Junior John LaPrise and Senior Alex Pachella were named to the All BAL First Team; Senior Nick Pancerella and Junior Ma Burke were named to the Second Team; and Senior Michael Ra ery received an Honorable Men on. The team had a league best record of 12‐2.

Devon Prep 2010 Alumni Golf Ou ng On Thursday, September 16, 2010 Devon Prep golfers returned to Bellewood Golf Club in Po stown to play in the annual Devon Prep Alumni Golf Ou ng. Alumni, parents and friends spent an a ernoon on the chal‐ lenging course. The winning foursome again this year included Jim (’87) and Ed (’88) Curran, Nick Meter ’88 and Bob Kershner.

At the end of the day the golfers were joined by Fr. Jim Shea ’66, Devon Prep Headmaster, and Mr. Barry Mulhern ’72, Alumni Associa on President, for a gourmet dinner. A large sign displayed the names of organiza ons and individuals sponsoring the Golf Ou ng., the Alumni Associa on raised more than $13,000 on behalf of Devon Prep through the generous support of its sponsors.

DEVON PREP CLASS OF 2011 Devon Prep graduated it’s largest class in 42 years on June 4, 2011. The Class of 2011 included 60 young men, more than any gradua ng class since 1969 which had 68 graduates. In addi on the Class of 2011 earned more scholarship money than any of its predecessors, collec vely accumula ng over $7.7 million. They also received more than 300 acceptances to over 100 colleges and universi es, including Fordham, Lehigh, NYU, Syracuse, Case Western Reserve, Drexel University, Villanova, Vassar College, Catholic University and Penn State. Among the graduates were 25 AP Scholars, seven with Dis nc on, and six Na onal Merit Commended students. Two of the graduates (Nicholas Pancerella and Alex Pachella) had been recruited to play Division 1 and Division 3 baseball, respec vely. And graduate David Freiberg was recognized for having perfect a endance for 7 years, since enrolling in Devon Prep in sixth grade. The Class also performed nearly 2000 hours of community service doing everything from collec ng and distribu ng food to needy families to raising over $25,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Calasanc an Society

Devon Prep has established the Calasanc an Society to honor those who have shown their commitment to Devon Prep through a very special and important form of financial support. These donors have named the school as an ul mate beneficiary of a planned gi by including Devon Prep in their estate plans.

We direct gi s made through bequests to Devon Prep’s permanent endowment, but they can be directed to another use if you wish. Endowment is a par cularly eﬀec ve way to leave a las ng legacy, since the earnings accrued on your gi will help to support the school in perpetuity.
