Headmaster’s Message Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family, In June of this year the two thousandth Devon Prep diploma was proudly awarded to a member of our Class of 2008. During his formative years spent here at Devon Prep, the recipient of this and every other Devon diploma given since 1960 has been provided a solid foundation for success. In addition, life-long friendships have been established, faith has been nurtured, and the ability to use God-given talents to maximum advantage has been developed in an environment imbued with Piarist ideals. Although Devon has long been recognized for its academic excellence, the success of our graduates encompasses so many areas beyond the classroom. The values, friendships, relationships, and memories of shared experiences so integral to life at Devon will last for life. Each time one of our graduates looks at his diploma, his yearbook, or some of the other cherished items from his Devon years, the memories return. Each of them is a reason for profound gratitude. An object of this gratitude should certainly also be you, the benefactors of Devon Prep School. It is your kindness that has helped to provide the material resources which have enabled more than two thousand young men to grow in a supportive environment where they can excel academically, think independently and creatively, and face the challenges of life with confidence. Your kindness is documented throughout this Annual Report of Gifts 2007-08, along with some of the other highlights of Devon Prep life during the past year. Please enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for you. Our school has weathered painful adjustments made necessary by the current economic environment and we look forward to a bright future. This bright future has already begun, as evidenced by an increase in enrollment. At this moment, we are delighted to have the largest enrollment in the history of the school. Another reason for our bright future is the kindness of our benefactors. I am both delighted and grateful that you are among these wonderful people. As you know, tuition does not cover all the expenses associated with providing a Devon Prep education to our students. It is your gift to the Annual Appeal which makes up the difference. I ask at this time that you continue, and even enhance, if possible, your investment in the future of Devon Prep. As a result, our school can proudly look forward to that day when the three thousandth diploma is proudly accepted by a future Devon graduate. Thank you again, and may God bless you and your loved ones, now and always! Cordially,

Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. Headmaster

Ways to Help Devon Prep Strengthen Our Foundation For Success nors (or their spouses) employed by companies with matching gift programs can double or triple their contributions by designating Devon Preparatory School as the recipient of matching gifts.

United Way

At Devon Prep we strive to provide each of our students with the Foundation to Succeed in college and in life. We achieve this goal through our tradition of Christian values, academic excellence, athletic competition and commitment to service. As costs continue to rise, private contributions to Devon Prep are more important than ever before to help strengthen the Foundation we have built. Your contribution is integral to our future and our success. Gifts to Devon Prep can be made in a number of ways, including the following:

Devon Prep CYO is eligible to participate in the Donor Choice/Specific Care Program of the United Way Program of Southeastern Pennsylvania. During the United Way’s annual campaign, donors may designate a gift to Devon Prep CYO on the Donor Choice pledge/designation form through Specific Care. Devon Prep CYO is classified as a “non-member agency,” and recorded as CYO/DEVON PREP, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636. The assigned identification number is consistent from year to year.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts Donors can further educational opportunities at Devon Prep by honoring or memorializing a special person or event. Acknowledgment of the gift is made directly to the family or designated individual.

Annual Giving Gifts to the Annual Giving Campaign are an essential part of the School’s development program. Annual Giving helps to promote quality instruction, defray the cost of needed renovations and repairs, provide scholarships and financial aid for deserving students, and secure the growth of Devon Prep. Gifts may be unrestricted, or may be directed to a specific interest or project including Technology Advancement, Scholarship Funds or Endowment.

Capital Giving Gifts to the Capital Giving Fund allow us to meet the long-term goals identified in an internal assessment and our strategic plan. These gifts funded the construction of Saint Anthony Hall and other campus improvements and will fund an endowment to provide for Devon’s future needs. Please contact the Development Office to discuss a Capital Fund Gift.

Matching Gifts The easiest way to make your gift to Devon Prep grow is through matching gifts. Do-

Gifts of Appreciated Property A gift of stock, real estate or other appreciated property can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax advantages to the donor. The full value of the securities is usually deductible, and you may avoid the capital gains tax on the profit.

Bequests Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to your will. You may wish to consider naming Devon Prep to receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning you can protect your family and also contribute to the financial security of Devon Prep.

“The passage of years since graduation gives one a perspective on the value of certain lessons learned in life. What is clear is how well my education prepared me for each following step in life. I also recognize how expensive each of those steps was and how much I benefited from the gifts of others.” Howard O. McGillin, Jr. ’77 Colonel, US Army (retired)

Gifts in Kind Devon Prep gratefully accepts gifts of supplies, books, and equipment. Tax deductions are available for firms and individuals contributing gifts in kind to educational institutions.

Scholarship Gifts While unrestricted gifts to the Annual Giving Campaign provide Devon Prep with operating funds to help maintain the quality of its academic programs, scholarship gifts enable the school to award scholarship aid to deserving students. Scholarship gifts can be made to the General Scholarship Fund, the Father Ladislaus Magyar Scholarship Fund, the Father Stephen Bendik Scholarship Fund, the Father Stephen Mustos Scholarship Fund, Stephen and Bernice Senye Scholarship Fund, the Martin J. Devine Scholarship Fund, the Kevin T. Flatley Scholarship Fund, the Martin W. Bowen Scholarship Fund or the Kalman Beothy Scholarship Fund. You can also give or gain a little immortality while making a lasting impact on future generations through the gift of an endowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone you would like to honor.

Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) Companies that do business and pay corporate taxes in Pennsylvania may receive substantial tax credits for donations to Devon Preparatory School’s student financial aid program. The Educational Improvement Tax Credit program is a wonderful opportunity for Devon Preparatory School. Our financial aid program, which provides financial assistance to needy students, is primarily funded by individual contributions to the school. Corporate support allows us to offer access to a private school education to more students, who may otherwise not be able to attend Devon Prep.

Matching Gifts, Foundations and Corporate Grants We are grateful to the following companies for their participation in the Matching Gifts to Education Program. Through their programs, these corporations and foundations have enabled our donors to double or even triple their gifts to Devon Prep. By enrolling in your company’s Matching Gifts Program, you can bring significant additional support to our school. Please check your company’s participation in this program or contact the Development Office for more information. The day began with a continental brunch in the gym where the guests gathered with their Devon Prep student. There they met other students as well as other guests. After the brunch they were treated to a presentation by Devon Prep’s Music Society. 2008 Mock Trial Team Devon Prep’s Mock Trial Team was the only suburban Philadelphia team to make it to the Final Four of the State Mock Trial Competition in Harrisburg. After they captured the 2008 Chester County Mock Trial Championship as well as the Regional Mock Trial Championship they were eligible to participate in the state competition along with 11 other teams from across Pennsylvania. Over 300 teams comprised of thousands of students from 67 counties in Pennsylvania participated in the annual Mock Trial competition vying for a position at the final trials in Harrisburg. Under the direction of faculty member Mr. Michael Collins and legal advisors Mr. Alan Connelly, Esq. and Mr. Michael D’Aniello, Esq., Devon Prep’s team prepared a complete prosecution and defense for a predetermined case, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Jaden Sinclair. This was a criminal case involving an alleged kidnapping. Team members played the roles of defending and prosecuting attorneys, as well as witnesses.

Rev. Stephen Mustos 1931-2008 Rev. Stephen N. Mustos, Sch.P., former headmaster of Devon Preparatory School, died on Sunday, April 20, the 50th anniversary of his priesthood in his native Hungary. He was 76 years old. Born in Veszprem, Hungary in August 1931, Fr. Mustos studied under the Piarist Fathers. He joined the Piarists and professed his simple vows in 1950. From 1954 to 1956 he taught at the Piarist school in Budapest. He left his homeland in 1956 to continue his academic life in Rome where he earned a degree in theology at Gregorian University. He professed his solemn vows to the Piarist Order in 1957 and was ordained on April 20, 1958 in Rome. He came to the United States the next year and joined the Piarist Fathers who were establishing a province in this country. After studying English for one year he was sent to the Community of Derby. He earned a masters degree in mathematics and physics at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. He taught in the Piarist school in Buffalo, Calasanctius School, from 1960 until 1969. For the next 18 years, from 1969 until 1987, Fr. Mustos served as Headmaster of Devon Preparatory School. He also served as Superior of the Community from 1973 until 1979 and again from 1985 until 1987. He was elected Provincial Assistant on several occasions. While he served as Devon Prep’s headmaster Fr. Mustos also taught Latin and Math. In 1970 he celebrated Devon Prep’s first Christmas Midnight Mass which has become an annual tradition. He closed the boarding school in 1970 and he scheduled the first Open House in 1971, the same year he instituted the Advanced Placement Program. In 1972 he expanded Devon Prep to include seventh and eighth grades. In 1975 construction of the school’s athletic field was completed. While he served as headmaster Devon Prep marked both its 25th anniversary and its 30th anniversary. In 1985, Fr. Mustos became the President of the Association of Hungarian Priests on the East Coast of the United States. From 1987 to 1990, Fr. Mustos served as the administrator of St. Stephen’s Parish in Trenton. In 1990 he became the pastor of St. Stephen’s Magyar Church in Passaic, NJ. One of Father Mustos' real joys was his work among the Hungarian emigrants. For many years, he celebrated a monthly Mass for Hungarians in the school chapel on Devon Prep’s campus. He later served as the Delegate in the United States for Bishop Attila Mikloshazy from 1989 until 2006. Father Mustos retired from active ministry in 2007. He developed some serious health problems and retired to his native country where he resided in a nursing home for priests until his death. Donations in Rev. Mustos’ memory can be made to the “Fund For Retired Piarist Fathers,” c/o Rev. Father John Callan, Sch.P., 4605 Bay View Dr., Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33308.
