DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Headmaster’s Message Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family, It is likely that most of us are keenly aware of and deeply grateful for the presence in our lives of one or more people who have truly made a difference. First among these people would be our parents. During our formative years and beyond, they have established for us the foundation on which we have built our lives. Through their cooperation with Almighty God, our parents have given us life and have nurtured that life abundantly. Many of us have also been blessed with knowing other fantastic people who have made a difference in the way we view the world. It may have been a coach on an athletic team who allowed us to truly open our eyes to see for ourselves that we can accomplish things we once thought were beyond our reach. As an educator and school administrator, I would like to think that perhaps one or more members of the teaching profession at some time have also made that critical difference. The Piarist Fathers founded Devon Prep in 1956 to make a difference in the lives of the young men who are fortunate enough to attend our school. The more than three century long history of Piarist dedication to the education of youth has touched the lives of many. Because of the sacrifices of parents and benefactors for more than fifty years, the mission of the school has been sustained and expanded, enhancing the lives of over two thousand graduates. None of this could have taken place without major efforts on the part of so many wonderful people. I am privileged to include you as one of them. As you browse through this Annual Report of Gifts 2008-09 you will see numerous examples of how Devon Prep continues to make a difference in the lives of some very special young men. The major reason for the existence of this document, however, is to honor and thank those whose generosity to Devon Prep has made it possible for us to make the difference about which I speak. Each year I remind you that tuition alone does not fully cover the costs of educating young men in the tradition of Saint Joseph Calasanctius. It is though the Annual Appeal that we help to bridge that gap. This need is even more pressing in difficult economic times such as we now experience. For this reason, I ask you to prayerfully consider making an even greater difference in the life of Devon Prep by augmenting your planned donation. The need is great, and the difference you make in the lives of our students will be a profound one. Thank you again, and may God bless you and your loved ones, now and always! Cordially,

Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. Headmaster

Ways of Giving to Devon Prep Gifts to Devon Prep can be made in a number of ways, including the following:

Annual Giving Gifts to the Annual Giving Fund are the cornerstone of the School’s development program. Annual Giving helps to promote quality instruction, defray the cost of needed renovations and repairs, provide scholarships and financial aid for deserving students, and secure the growth of Devon Prep. Gifts may be unrestricted, or may be directed to a specific interest or project including Technology Advancement, Scholarship Funds or Endowment.

Capital Giving

annual campaign, donors may designate a gift to Devon Prep CYO on the Donor Choice pledge/designation form through Specific Care. Devon Prep CYO is classified as a “nonmember agency,” and recorded as CYO/ DEVON PREP, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636. The assigned identification number is consistent from year to year.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts Donors can further educational opportunities at Devon Prep by honoring or memorializing a special person or event. Acknowledgment of the gift is made directly to the family or designated individual.

Gifts to the Capital Giving Fund allow us to meet the long-term goals identified in an internal assessment and in our strategic plan. These gifts funded the construction of Saint Anthony Hall and other campus improvements and will fund an endowment to provide for Devon’s future needs. Please contact the Development Office to discuss a Capital Fund Gift.

Gifts of Appreciated Property

Matching Gifts

Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to your will. You may wish to consider naming Devon Prep to receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning you can protect your family and also contribute to the financial security of Devon Prep.

The easiest way to make your gift to Devon Prep grow is through matching gifts. Donors (or their spouses) employed by companies with matching gift programs can double or triple their contributions by designating Devon Preparatory School as the recipient of matching gifts.

United Way Devon Prep CYO is eligible to participate in the Donor Choice/Specific Care Program of the United Way. During the United Way’s

A gift of stock, real estate or other appreciated property can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax advantages to the donor. The full value of the securities is usually deductible, and you may avoid the capital gains tax on the profit.

Bequests

Gifts in Kind Devon Prep gratefully accepts gifts of supplies, books, and equipment. Tax deductions are available for firms and individuals contributing gifts in kind to educational institutions.

Scholarship Gifts While unrestricted gifts to the Annual Giving Fund provide Devon Prep with operating funds to help maintain the quality of its academic programs, scholarship gifts enable the school to award scholarship aid to deserving students. Scholarship gifts can be made to the General Scholarship Fund, the Father Ladislaus Magyar Scholarship Fund, the Father Stephen Bendik Scholarship Fund, the Father Stephen Mustos Scholarship Fund, the Stephen and Bernice Senye Scholarship Fund, the Martin J. Devine Scholarship Fund, the Kevin T. Flatley Scholarship Fund, the Martin W. Bowen Scholarship Fund, the Kalman Beöthy Scholarship Fund or the Class of 1983 Scholarship Fund. You can also give or gain a little immortality while making a lasting impact on future generations through the gift of an endowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone you would like to honor.

Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) Companies that do business and pay corporate taxes in Pennsylvania may receive substantial tax credits for donations to Devon Preparatory School’s student financial aid program. The Educational Improvement Tax Credit program is a wonderful opportunity for Devon Preparatory School. Our financial aid program, which provides financial assistance to needy students, is primarily funded by individual contributions to the school. Corporate support allows us to offer access to a private school education to more students, who may otherwise not be able to attend Devon Prep.

Matching Gift, Foundations, and Corporate Grants We are grateful to the following companies for their participation in the Matching Gifts to Education Program. Through their programs, these corporations and foundations have enabled our donors to double or even triple their gifts to Devon Prep. By enrolling in your company’s Matching Gifts Program, you can bring significant additional support to our school. Brian Lefchek ’09, Using His Talents to Help Others Class of 2009 Alumnus, Brian Lefchak, accumulated over 350 service hours in his senior year supporting the Arthritis Foundation. In addition to advocacy efforts he planned and performed in two concerts to raise several thousand dollars for a scholarship fund for Camp JRA (Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis). Both concerts also featured fellow Devon Prep students, professional musicians, or Camp JRA musicians. In planning and organizing the concerts Brian handled everything from picking and arranging the music, scheduling practices, securing a venue, gathering sponsorships and marketing the events. He did all this while participating on Devon Prep’s varsity soccer team, maintaining distinguished honors, and holding a job. The money he raised provides tuition for 10 underprivileged children (ages 8 -18) to attend the week long summer camp for children with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases . Brian’s interest in the JRA Foundation is quite personal as his younger sister has been diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. In addition to the two concerts, he routinely volunteers for the Arthritis Foundation throughout the year at events like the Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C.; the National Arthritis Convention in Hershey, PA; the annual Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis; the annual Camp JRA Holiday Party; the annual Arthritis Foundation Family Fun Day; and the annual Arthritis Walk in Philadelphia. “My involvement with the Arthritis Foundation stems from the fact that my younger sister has juvenile arthritis, and has grown because of my rewarding experiences at Camp JRA,” Brian explained. “This involvement has influenced my decision to become a doctor, possibly a pediatric rheumatologist. In college, I plan to expand my benefit events for Camp JRA and to create a first-ever sustainable student group tied to rheumatic and other autoimmune conditions.” Brian now is currently in the Pennoni Honors Program at Drexel University.

Students Collect School Supplies for North Philadelphia Community Center With rising costs of everything from food and gas to school supplies “Back to School” shopping can be difficult for some families. However, for over 200 families in North Philadelphia, getting the necessary school supplies was made a little easier last year with help from Devon Prep students. Throughout the summer the members of the Christian Action Program (CAP )collected nearly 3300 items from Devon Prep families for St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in Philadelphia. Among the collected items were over 1400 pencils, nearly 400 notebooks and nearly 100 packs of crayons. Also included were pens, erasers, scissors, rulers, glue sticks, index cards, folders, highlighters and just about anything else needed to start school.

Members of the Class of 2009 James Gamrat (left) and Mark Rafferty sort through the donated items.

With tears in her eyes Mrs. Helen Brown of St. Elizabeth’s Community Center gratefully received the supplies and hugged each of the Devon Prep students who delivered them. “These boys can never really know how much all their hard work and kindness means to us,” she said. The donations were to be distributed to families with school age children during a community block party. Although CAP runs a food drive to benefit St. Elizabeth’s each year, this is the first time they conducted a school supplies drive. “It seemed like an easy and thoughtful project to end the summer and start our new school year on the right foot,” said Mrs. Elizabeth Eshleman, CAP moderator.

Parents Association Supports Devon Prep Through SPRING TIDE ’09 Devon Prep Parents Association made a big difference in the lives of our students by raising over $80,000 through the Spring TIDE 2009 dinner and auction. Hundreds of parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Devon Prep supported this annual fundraiser by buying a ticket, donating an auction item, participating in the raffle, bidding on items or giving their time to help make it all happen. Devon Students worked a servers during Spring TIDE.

This year’s theme was “Philly Rocks – Spring TIDE Rolls,” celebrating all things Philadelphia, from the Phillies and Eagles to soft pretzels, cheese steaks and the sounds of the city. The evening began with a Cocktail Reception and Silent Auction in a beautifully decorated Calasanctius Hall. Each room in the Hall represented a noted area or event in Philadelphia. One room was designated as Packer Park, another was decorated to represent the Philadelphia Flower Show. The main hall had a full wall representing the Philadelphia Phillies. The evening progressed with dinner, dancing and the Live Auction in the athletic facility where the decorating committee had constructed a boxing ring with a cut out of Rocky Balboa in it. Along the way the halls of the school were covered with hand painted cityscapes.

Mr. & Mrs. James Enderle bid on a the Choral Tide photo.

Among this year’s auction items were vacation homes, sporting event tickets, music and theater tickets (including Springsteen and Billy Joel concert tickets), golf packages, jewelry, restaurants, collectibles, college gear, theme baskets and Devon Prep memorabilia. In addition there was a raffle with three prizes, $10,000 in cash, $2,500 in cash, and an IBM Notebook. Freshman Parents Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Nancy Bonner served as Event Chairs for Spring TIDE 2009. Dinner was catered by Freshman Mom Mrs. Ruth Kalivas. Devon Prep juniors and seniors worked as servers throughout the evening helping with appetizers, dinner and refreshments. Proceeds from Spring TIDE 2009 benefited Devon Prep’s Wish List which included several capital improvements.

Spreading Christmas Cheer Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) marked the holiday season by sponsoring their annual collection of gifts for the needy. With today’s economy this program was more important than ever. Through the generosity of the students, faculty, staff and parents, CAP collected nearly 200 gifts including, clothing, hats, gloves, toys and household items. The members of CAP sorted all the wrapped gifts so they could be donated to My Brother’s House and St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia.

Harvest Food Drive Feeds Area Needy

“Up For a Cause” Raises Nearly $40,000 For CHOP

At a time with so much economic uncertainty, collecting donations of any kind has become more and more difficult. And yet the need is greater than ever before. With this in mind the members of Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) worked tirelessly to ensure many families in North Philadelphia would have a Happy Thanksgiving.

For many children being treated at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), simple everyday activities like running and jumping and playing ball are often replaced with stressful and difficult therapies.

The sixth through 12th graders collected over 5000 food items and nearly 70 turkeys during their 2008 Harvest Food Drive, surpassing previous year’s collection. In addition nearly 30 bags of clothing were also collected. Among the food donations were canned vegetables and soups, jars of apple sauce and jams, boxes of pasta, stuffing, rice and mashed potatoes, tomato sauce, tuna fish, peanut butter and more. All of this food, more than 100 cartons, was first presented to Headmaster Rev. James J. Shea for a blessing during a Mass held in the school’s gym. After the Mass the donations were loaded onto two trucks and delivered by CAP members to St. Elizabeth’s Community Center and Food Cupboard in North Philadelphia. Seniors Mark Rafferty and Patrick Mannion led the 2008 Food Drive. According to Rafferty the Food Drive was an opportunity to give back . “Most of us at Devon Prep are very fortunate, so this food drive gave us the opportunity to give back to those around us who are in need,” he explained. “Even in this difficult economic time our Devon Prep families as well as local merchants were very generous,” Rafferty continued, “we feel it’s important to help those who have been hit the hardest. Devon Prep’s CAP members worked really hard to make sure families at St. Elizabeth’s would have the best Thanksgiving possible.”

In an effort to alleviate some of that stress the members of Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) sponsored “Up for a Cause” hoping to raise $25,000 for these children. Instead they raised over $34,000 breaking all of their previous records. More than 165 Upper School students participated in this event, a 12-hour night of fun and games in the gym. Throughout the night the students took part in a variety of activities including basketball tournaments, relay races, tug of war, dodge ball and board games. No Ipods, laptops, CD players or electronic devices of any kind were permitted. And neither was sleeping! Special guests included representatives from Children’s Hospital and the St. Joseph’s University Hawk. “This year we hoped to break the $25,000 mark for CHOP,” said CAP President Garrison Weaver. “And we raised much more than that. Children's Hospital does a great service to our community and deserves all the help we can give them.” Later in the school year, CAP held an “Up for the Cause” for the Middle School. Thirty-seven students participated and raised nearly $5,000, making the total donation to CHOP nearly $40,000. The proceeds were donated to the hospital’s Creative Art Therapy Department, which recognizes that illness and hospitalization are stressful events in the lives of children and their families. By using age appropriate education, preparation and supportive activities, Life Specialists strive to minimize that stress and help children and their families cope. For the past eight years CAP has sponsored similar events raising more than a $125,000 for other charities. This is the first year that CHOP benefited from of the fundraiser.

Above: Fr. Shea blesses the Harvest Drive donations during Mass. Below: Mrs. Helen Brown, Director of St. Elizabeth’s Food Cupboard, is happy to receive the 5000 donated food items delivered by CAP members.

DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Devon Prep’s 50th Class, the Class of 2009, graduated on June 6 during a commencement ceremony held in the school’s athletic facility filled with parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives and friends. This Class proved to be an outstanding one with over $7.1 million in college scholarships and more than 275 acceptances to nearly 100 schools, including 14 Ivy League acceptances from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania. The 56 graduates hailed from communities in Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties. In addition to the Ivy League acceptances, they also received acceptances from MIT, Johns Hopkins, the US. Military Academy, NYU, Tufts and Georgetown among others. The Class of 2009 included 33 AP Scholars (15 AP Scholars with Distinction), two National AP Scholars, 12 National Merit Scholars (four were Finalists, two of whom were Scholarship winners) and one National Hispanic Scholar. In addition nearly 20% of the graduates will participate in collegiate athletics. This group of young men also performed over 1800 hours of community service doing everything from collecting and distributing food to needy families to raising more than $34,000 for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). According to Headmaster Rev. James Shea, Sch.P., these graduates are an outstanding group of young men. “During their time at Devon Prep they have consistently excelled in and out of the classroom, and have dramatically increased the spirit of the school. I am delighted to see their excellence recognized by being accepted into the finest colleges and universities in the United States,” Fr. Shea said. “These young men are a credit to our school and their families.”
