2011 HARVEST FOOD DRIVE
Members of Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) worked tirelessly this fall collecting donations for their Harvest Food Drive benefitting St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia. The students, in grades 6 through 12, collected more than 5,600 food items including turkeys and canned and boxed goods. All of this food, more than 150 cartons, was first presented for a blessing during a Mass of Thanksgiving in the school’s gym. After the Mass, CAP members delivered the donations to the Project H.O.M.E Food Cupboard at St. Elizabeth’s. Mrs. Helen Brown, Director of the Food Cupboard, and several volunteers were on hand to accept Devon Prep’s generous donations which included canned vegetables and soups, jars of apple sauce, peanut butter and jams, boxes of pasta, stuffing, rice and mashed potatoes, tomato sauce, tuna fish, peanut butter and fresh bread. GRANDPARENTS & SPECIAL OTHERS VISIT DEVON More than 100 students hosted special guests for Devon Prep’s annual Grandparents and Special Others Day in late November. Nearly 200 grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and friends attended this popular event which took place in the school’s athletic facility. The day began with an extensive continental brunch as the guests and their hosts hugged, talked and mingled with each other. After Headmaster Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. welcomed everyone, they were treated to a concert by the Devon Prep Music Society which included the Jazz Band Ensemble and Choral Groups as well as several soloists. As the event came to a close many of the students took their guests on a quick tour of the school to meet teachers and stop at the school store for “early” holiday gifts. CONSEQUENCES OF UNSAFE CHOICES BEHIND THE WHEEL
STUDENTS PLANT TREES IN DELAWARE COUNTY PARK
Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital and The Chester County Highway Safety Project (CCHSP) presented a collaborative multi-media presentation to Devon Prep Upper School students in the gym. The Presentation was a combination of the hospital’s Cruisin’ Not Boozin’ (CNB) program and the CCHSP’s Survival 101 program, which brings together state and local police departments and CNB speakers, who speak about reallife tragedies and the devastating consequences of unsafe choices behind the wheel.
Eight members of the Devon Prep Environmental Society were on hand to help the Marple Township Tree Commission plant trees at New Ardmore Park in Broomall. The students, who planted 12 trees, included seniors Alexander Teplyakov, Matthew Swatski, Roshan Patel, Ryan Fulmer, and Richard DiColli, Junior Kevin Fulmer, and eighth grader Shyamal Patel and seventh grader Daniel Swatski. Devon Prep’s Environmental Society (DPES), comprised of students in grades 9 through 12, works to raise awareness for the environment both in school and the community. Still in its early stages, the group conducts a recycling program at school, and has planted 20 trees in Delaware County community parks. They plan to plant trees on Devon Prep’s campus in the spring with the help of the Marple Tree Commission.
The program covered crash dynamics, seat belt usage, distracted and drowsy driving, aggressive driving, speeding, impaired driving characteristics, and the use of electronic hand held devices and texting while driving. The session was led by a state trooper and first-hand experience was presented by Sean O’Donnell, age 33. Sean is a paraplegic who was involved in a motorcycle crash as a high school senior. He shared his powerful story and the challenges of confinement to a wheelchair. He talked about the road dynamics leading to the accident and how the distraction of the other driver changed his life. This presentation was sponsored by Devon Prep’s Health and Guidance Department. For more: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/ events1112/driving11/driving11.php
SOPHOMORES LEARN TO SAVE LIVES Devon Prep’s Student Health Department sponsored the American Heart Association’s Heart Saver course for all the members of the Sophomore Class. They were taught about the Chain of Survival, and the important part they can play in helping victims of “sudden death” survive long enough to receive treatment with advanced techniques. Hands-on experience, lectures, and a film were used to teach the signs and signals of heart attack, stroke, and choking. The students learned to evaluate breathlessness and pulselessness enabling them to know when to use CPR and abdominal thrusts (also known as the Heimlich maneuver). The hands-on lessons were demonstrated on two types of mannequins, an adult torso and an infant, in order to learn how to perform these life-saving skills on people of different sizes. In addition they also learned how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). See more photos: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/events1112/cpr11/ cpr11.php
STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT MILITARY SERVICE FROM THOSE WHO SERVED Most students learn about wars and the armed forces through chapters in textbooks. That can be interesting, but not at all personal. In November, more than a dozen Devon Prep students received a much more personal account of military service simply by visiting our next door neighbors. These young men interviewed military Veterans who reside and work at The Devon Senior Living, a senior living community located next to Devon Prep’s campus. Under the direction of Mr. Joe Lewis, Devon Prep teacher and Community Service Coordinator, the boys talked to 12 veterans for an hour or more to learn about their training, deployment, living conditions, battles, injuries, and experiences in the military. After their interviews were completed each student wrote a story about his subject’s military experience. The stories were then compiled into a book. On Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, during a special ceremony at The Devon Senior Living, with the students and families in attendance, this book of stories was presented to each of the Veterans. The idea for this project came from Devon Senior Living Director of Community Relations Ms. Sue Seanor. Ms. Seanor learned from personal experience that many Veterans have stories to tell and often do not share them with close family or friends. Sometimes they find it easier to open up to strangers. “I thought this project would make a good partnership with Devon Prep and give the Veterans a way of sharing their stories,” Ms. Seanor explained. “It has worked out beautifully.” Eighty-nine year old Everette Miller, a cook in the Marines during World War II had no problem sharing his story with Devon Prep Senior Alexander Teplyakov. Mr. Miller never saw combat but did guard Japanese prisoners when stationed in Guam. “World War II has generally always interested me,” said Alex. “I just wanted to find out what Mr. Miller’s experience was. This helped me to get a better understanding of what the servicemen went through during that war.” Senior Roshan Patel was a little surprised at how the experience of talking with Mr. Ferruccio “Fred” Ciccotelli made him feel. Mr. Ciccotelli, who is 87, served in the Italian army at the age of 17 and within a week of moving to the US, at the age of 23, was drafted into the American army as well. “I really enjoyed talking with Fred,” Roshan said. “He was so happy to see us and talk to us and tell us his story. So it really felt good to make him that happy. I’ve only heard about this period through textbooks,” Roshan continued. “For someone to put an emotional perspective on it and a personal perspective as well, meant a lot. It really added more value to my education of that time period.” Most of the residents were equally as pleased with the experience. Mr. Atha Baugh, 87, served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He explained to
sixth graders Jacob Pabia and Paris T. Shusterfallou that the military was segregated in those days. As an African American, he went through basic training in Alabama and eventually served with the elite Tuskegee Flyers, comprised of only black men. As a former school teacher, Mr. Baugh appreciated what the boys were doing. “I think this is great,” he said. “I wish they would do more things like this in schools. It’s very valuable for them. We’re old timers you know. The Air Force is nothing like it was when we were in it. I hope the experience was a favorable one for the boys. I certainly enjoyed talking to them.” Ninety-two year old John Houston, an Air Force Pilot, agreed. He was interviewed by Senior Dan Lewis and felt it was a worthwhile project. “I thought this was a good idea,” Mr. Houston said. “I think the schools are more or less ignoring World War II. I think they are taking the emphasis off it. I guess we’ve had so many wars since, they just don’t want to talk about it anymore.” (continued)
VETERANS (continued) Most of the Veterans ranged in age from their mid-eighties to early nineties. Although some were physically able to get around on their own, others were in wheelchairs or used walkers. A few needed family members to help them get through the interviews. Yet the Devon Prep students found that all of the Veterans were happy to share their memories and stories. Eighth Grader Brendan Leardi enjoyed talking with Mr. Robert Davies, 90, a First Class Machinist in the US Navy, and his daughter Ms. Diane Davies who sat in on the interview. Ms. Davies even brought along some photos and documents from her dad’s time in the service. Brendan said he hoped Mr. Davies liked the final story. “I enjoyed interviewing him. I learned about World War II on a personal level. It was fun.” Perhaps Alex Teplyakov summed up this project best in reference to Mr. Miller’s reaction to the final product. “I hope that he will feel that his
service was appreciated and that even today we value his contributions.” See more photos: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/ events1112/veteransday11/veteransday11.php **************** Doug Shimell of NBC 10 came to Devon Prep to produce a story about the Veterans Day project (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/ local/Veterans-and-Students-Join-Together-for-History-Lesson133718348.html ). KYW 1060 AM (http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2011/11/12/prepstudents-retirement-community-team-up-to-tell-veterans%E2%80%99stories/ ) and WPVI TV6 covered the ceremony. THEATER PROGRAM PRESENTS "AH, WILDERNESS!” Devon Prep’s Theater Program presented four performances of “Ah, Wilderness!” by Eugene O’Neill in early November. This comedy takes place on the Fourth of July in 1906 and focuses on the Miller family of New London, Connecticut. The main plot deals with the middle son, 16 year old Richard, and his coming of age. The title derives from one of Richard’s favorite poems “Quatrain XI” of Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of the “Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.” The cast included 24 students from Devon Prep, Conestoga High School, Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, the Woodlynde School, Notre Dame Academy, and Archbishop Carroll High School. Mr. Carl Gedeik directed the performances. More photos: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/theater/drama.php

FALL SPIRIT DAY
HALLOWEEN PARTY
Devon Prep's Middle School Fall Spirit Day was postponed several times due to the weather this year. It finally took place in early November on a clear, crisp day. The boys competed according to homerooms in such events as donut-eating, arm wrestling, three on three basketball, floor hockey, track & field, frisbee football, 3 legged race, RC car race, kickball and finally tug-of-war. By the looks of it they had a great time, especially the members of the winning homeroom - 8A! More photos: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/events1112/fallfieldday11/ fallfieldday11.php

PB&J SANDWICH SOCIAL
CAP GIVING TREE
Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) sponsored a peanut butter and jelly sandwich making session including more than 40 freshmen from Devon and Notre Dame Academy. In about 90 minutes they made nearly 300 PB&J sandwiches to be donated to the Patrician Society’s Emergency Food Cupboard in Norristown. Although the process was a bit messy, the end result was well worth it as many new friendships were made along with all those donated sandwiches. Nominate a Devon Prep Teacher for “Heart of Learning” Award Citadel Bank has teamed up with the Chester County Intermediate Unit to honor our area’s most outstanding educators. Each year, Citadel receives thousands of nominations for this nationally recognized award (more than 2,500 in 2011 alone). The Citadel team reviews each nomination and narrows the list to 15 finalists: • One teacher from each of the 13 area public school districts • One teacher from the Chester County Intermediate Unit • One teacher from a non-public school in Chester County (including charter and home schools) Each of the finalists receives $500 to use in his or her classroom. From this elite group, three winners are selected: one high school, one middle school, and one elementary school teacher. Each winner receives the Citadel Heart of Learning Award along with an additional $1,500 for use in the classroom. In addition by nominating a teacher you can help Devon Prep earn money for events and assemblies. Citadel tallies all the nominations from each school and the top three schools win cash prizes.* First Place: $1,500 Second Place: $750 Third Place: $500 * Prizes will be awarded based on the percentage of nominations to the total student population for each school. In the event of a tie, schools will be placed in a drawing and randomly selected. You can nominate a Devon Prep teacher by going to Citadel’s website before December 31, 2011: CITADEL HEART OF LEARNING
