In addition to being the largest class in recent years, the Class of 2011 earned more scholarship money than any of its predecessors, collectively accumulating nearly $7.8 million. They also received more than 300 acceptances to over 100 colleges and universities, including Fordham, Lehigh, NYU, Syracuse, Case Western Reserve, Drexel University, Villanova, Vassar College, Catholic University and Penn State. The Class included 25 AP Scholars, seven of whom were AP Scholars with Distinction, and six National Merit Scholars. Two of the graduates, Nicholas Pancerella and Alex Pachella, had been recruited to play Division 1 and Division 3 baseball, respectively. Graduate David Freiberg was recognized for having perfect attendance for 7 years, since enrolling in Devon Prep in sixth grade. The Class also performed nearly 2000 hours of community service doing everything from collecting and distributing food to needy families to raising over $25,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. From left: Chris Clayton, Jacob Riedel, Rich Gargano
Devon Prep’s Solar Car Team, “The Devon Panel,” is in the process of building a solar powered vehicle to race at the 2011 HuntWinston Solar Car Challenge (http://www.winstonsolar.org/challenge/) in Dallas, TX, this summer. Devon Prep’s team will be the first Pennsylvania high school team to compete in this closed track national competition. In late April they brought their project, a 12 ft. X 2 ft. rolling chassis with a seat and steering wheel, to school for faculty and students to see their progress. On Memorial Day they participated in the Radnor Memorial Day Parade. The team consists of five Devon Prep sophomores, Jacob Riedel, Antonio Muscarella, Chris Clayton, Zach Schaefer and Rich Gargano. “When I first heard about this project I thought it was a really cool idea. I’m interested in ecology and this seemed like a great way to get into green technology,” said Jacob Riedel, who spearheaded the project. “I’ve learned so much. I know about battery power, motors, how the strength of steel is determined, how solar panels are made. It’s been a great experience.” READ MORE: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/events1011/solarcar/solarcar.php

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premiere organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
MS. BOSMA TO BLOG HER WAY THROUGH PERU Summer is here and for many teachers it’s time to relax a little and maybe catch up on some reading. For Devon Prep’s Ms. Genevieve Bosma, it’s also time to prepare for an adventure of a lifetime and virtually take her students with her.
“My goal with the blog is to share my adventure and hopefully get my friends, family, students, and any other readers excited to learn about any of the topics covered - traveling, adventurous activities, and Spanish,” Ms. Bosma explained.
Next week Ms. Bosma will be traveling to Peru for 10 days. As a Spanish and history teacher, this is a trip that has interested her for a long time. Her itinerary includes exploring the city of Lima, seeing ancient and colonial sights of Cuzco, climbing Machu Picchu, camping in the Andes, visiting Lake Titicaca on the border of Peru and Bolivia, spending the night with a host family, visiting local Inca and pre-Inca ruins, and a 4-day trek without modern facilities.
“I love connecting with others over shared passions. Blogs are like a one-stop-shop for anyone interested, but you do have a responsibility to do them well, make them interesting to read, and visually appealing to look at - not too different from teaching a class.”
Ms. Bosma recently started a blog, (http://www.gbosma -peru.blogspot.com/), so her friends, family, colleagues and especially her students can share in her journey. “For years I have wanted to visit Peru,” she said. “I don’t even remember the first time I saw a photo of Machu Picchu, but it has been engrained in my mind as one of the places to go for as long as I can remember, especially this year, the 100th anniversary of its discovery.” Ms. Bosma is no stranger to foreign travel, having studied abroad in Costa Rica and Mexico in college and living in the Yucatan Peninsula upon graduation to teach English. She also traveled to Spain, Greece, the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, throughout the Caribbean and the United States. But she is taking this physically demanding trip by herself. Her preparations are underway - hiking with a heavy backpack, increasing her water intake, preparing a first aid kit. Through her blog she is keeping her followers informed and asking for advice as well.
She has had a positive response from those who have read her entries to this point. Her blog had more than 400 hits in the first week. “My experience has been great so far,” she said. “I have had a lot of friends email me about it with advice and best wishes, as well as students tell me in person that it was really cool. It's been fun for me, and has been great to share, especially because I'm going alone.” Ms. Bosma intends to continue blogging as often as possible throughout her trip, posting photos along the way, and when she returns from her journey. “Each year the final project for my Spanish 3 students is for them to create their own version of “Globe Trekkers” and show off all they've learned,” Ms. Bosma said. “Kids are really interested in using technology and I decided that it was time for me to use technology to reach out to kids.” You can follow Ms. Bosma’s adventures at: http://www.gbosmaperu.blogspot.com/
GERMAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS VISIT DEVON PREP Although they live thousands of miles away, the 12 German exchange students who visited Devon Prep in April adapted to life in the US very easily. The six girls and six boys were students from Albertus-Magnus Gymnasium (AMG), a private co-ed high school in Stuttgart. They were participating in the German American Partnership Program (GAPP), an exchange program that provides high school students with the opportunity to learn about German and American culture and language. The students, who ranged in age from 14 to 16, attended Devon Prep classes and lived with Devon Prep students and their families. In addition to attending classes they took day and weekend trips to points of interest in the area. They visited Washington DC, Lancaster County and Valley Forge. They had a real American lunch at Nifty Fifties, where the onion rings were a big hit. They visited Historic Philadelphia, as well as South Street. They had lunch at Brauhaus Schmitz, a German bier hall owned and operated by Devon Alumnus Doug Hager, Class of 1996. Of course, shopping was on the itinerary with the King of Prussia Mall being the main destination and the Philadelphia Outlets also on the list.
Hannah Seybold and Jan Fleischer enjoyed their trips to Philadelphia and Valley Forge. However, they really enjoyed the shopping at the King of Prussia Mall. “It is so big, with so many stores,” Hannah said. According to Jan, his trip to Devon was both educational and enjoyable. “I am learning about America and Philadelphia and Washington,” he said. “My host family is very nice and I am having fun.” READ MORE: http://www.devonprep.com/studentlife/events1011/ germans/germans.php

Senior Alex Smith was recognized as a Premier First Year Delegate and was also chosen to attend the week-long YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA) in North Carolina in July. Alex received the Premier First Year Delegate award for all-around exemplary performance as a leader, statesman, and delegate. He was selected to attend CONA because he displayed exemplary skills in diplomacy and performance in debate, was willing to assist fellow delegates, and exhibited strong speaking and research skills. Junior Connell White was elected Chief Justice of the International Criminal Court for next year’s conference, and Junior Ryan Fulmer was appointed Chief Editor / Chair of Video Press for the 2012 conference in Hershey. More than 1000 high school students from schools in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania attended the YMCA Model UN Conference in Hershey. Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's agenda. While playing their roles as ambassadors, student "delegates" make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure.
STUDENTS “GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE” Early in the Spring Semester Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) sponsored the 2011 American Red Cross Blood Drive. Parents, teachers, students and staff donated nearly 40 pints of blood. Each pint of donated blood has the potential to save three lives. In addition to donating whole blood that contains red blood cells, platelets and plasma, several of Devon Prep’s donors opted to participate in the Automated Red Cell Collection, where they provided two units of life-saving red blood cells during one donation. Some four million people give blood each year through the Red Cross, making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States.

1980 ALUMNUS NAMED US AMBASSADOR Daniel Shields is grateful for his Devon education Devon Prep Class of 1980 Alumnus Daniel L. Shields III, a native of Berwyn, was sworn in as the new US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam in late March. Devon Prep Headmaster Rev. James Shea, Sch.P. and History Teacher Mr. Michael Collins were personally invited to attend the swearing in ceremony held in the US State Department in Washington, DC. The Ambassador’s brother Gregory, a 1992 Devon Prep alumnus, and classmate Mark Pillarella were also in attendance. Ambassador Shields officially presented his credentials to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei in early April. While attending Devon Prep in the late seventies Ambassador Shields was actively involved in student council, as Senior Class President, sports, as a starter on the basketball team, and community service, as a member of the Christian Action Program. Apparently his destiny was evident even then as his classmates wrote in the 1980 yearbook, “Presently Dan plans to pursue a career in international relations. His membership in the Nature Club and his spatial mind will surely help to reach his goal of independent wealth as an ambassador to American Samoa.” After graduating from Devon Prep, Ambassador Shields received a B.S. degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and an M.S. from the National War College. His career in the Senior Foreign Service began in 1985 as Consular Officer at the Embassy in Manila. READ MORE: http://www.devonprep.com/alumni/ events1011/ambassador/ambassador.php

2008 ALUMNUS TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD Wade Wisler credits Devon Prep for his ability to adapt It may not be exactly like the Jules Verne book, but Devon Prep Alumnus Wade Wisler ’08 could easily write his own exciting version of Around the World in 100 Days. The University of Scranton junior spent the spring semester traveling to such places as Dominica, Manaus (1000 miles up the Amazon) Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, India, Singapore, Vietnam, China, and Taiwan, having adventures along the way. Wade participated in Semester at Sea, a shipboard program for study abroad sponsored by the University of Virginia and operated by the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education. Semester at Sea's worldwide itineraries offer coursework with field assignments and service learning in 8-12 international destinations. According to Wade, the ship served as a floating college campus with dorm rooms, dining halls, a gym, library and classrooms. Over 600 students representing 200 colleges and universities from around the world spent more than three months living and learning together. In addition, they shared the space with faculty and staff as well as about 100 “Life-long Learners,” retired adults who ‘come along for the ride.’ The close quarters made for equally close relationships. “The relationships formed with your faculty and life-long learners are only trumped by the friendships you form with your classmates,” Wade explained. “You make some incredible friends in the short 100 days you are with them. And all this happened while sailing around the world.” READ MORE: http://www.devonprep.com/alumni/events1011/wisler/ wisler.php

MIDDLE SCHOOL RAISES OVER $6,200 FOR ST. JUDE HOSPITAL
GEOGRAPHY & SPELLING BEE WINNERS Devon Prep Eighth Grader Jack Morris and Sixth Grader Benjamin Lubker each won a Middle School “BEE” this past spring. Jack won the middle school level Geographic Bee, a challenging test of geographic knowledge, and Benjamin won the middle school Spelling Bee. Both young men competed against other sixth, seventh and eighth graders. As the Geography Bee winner Morris qualified to take the written qualifying test for state competition. He scored among the top 100 students in the state and went on to compete in an oral competition at the state level. State winners compete in the national finals for scholarships in the amount of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000.
Mr. Orri Croft II, (left) representing St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, accepted over $6,200 from Devon Prep Middle School students during their annual “Up for a Cause” fundraising event.” .
Is it possible for nearly 50 middle school boys to spend a Friday night not using a computer, video game, cell phone or MP3 player? Devon Prep Middle Schoolers did just that to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in late March. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders participated in “Up for a Cause” a five hour fundraiser which netted over $6,200. Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) sponsored this event which took place in the school’s gym and included activities such as basketball, dodge ball, a moon bounce and board games, in addition to donated food and prizes. CAP also sponsored a similar event for Devon Prep’s Upper School students last fall, raising over $25,000, making the total donation to St. Jude’s nearly $32,000. CAP began “Up for a Cause” over ten years ago to raise money for charity. Since then they have raised more than $200,000 for hospitals that care for ill children. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (http://www.stjude.org/) was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas to find cures, through research and treatment, for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. On average, 5,700 active patients visit the hospital each year, most of who are treated on an outpatient basis. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. Sixth Grade History Project When Devon Prep History Teacher Ms. Genevieve Bosma considered ways to engage her sixth graders during lessons about the 13 American Colonies, she never expected the results to look so good. She decided that a hands-on project was just the thing - and that project would be a colonial quilt. “I knew it would be interesting and a bit unusual for the boys,” Bosma explained. “But I never expected the final product to be so beautiful. They did a great job - from researching their topic to depicting it on the quilt.” Each student had to research a colony, a figure, or theme prior to 1776. Then he had to create and sew an individual quilt square depicting what he learned. Among the topics the students presented were several of the 13 original colonies, the first Thanksgiving, Native Americans, and religious freedom. In addition to researching their topic, the boys had to plan their quilt square to adequately depict what they had learned. Then they needed to choose the appropriate fabric, create a design, cut, and sew. (For a video of the quilt in the making see http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=pWbX7l5Fhws) With help from Ms. Bosma’s mother as well as several sixth grade moms, the result is a beautiful and unique quilt that fittingly depicts this period in American history. According to Kevin Holmes, the project was fun and informative. “I did my square on the First Thanksgiving,” he said. “First I had to learn all about that event so when I put my square together it would look accurate. It took a while but it was fun.” The completed quilt now hangs in Calasanctius Hall.
SIXTH GRADERS CELEBRATE PI DAY Devon Prep sixth graders celebrated Pi Day with a math lesson and a snack. According to Math Teacher Mrs. Kathy Iacobucci, “Pi day is celebrated on March 14, (3/14), because the first three digits of the number Pi are 314. Pi is the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter.” During her Math lesson the students measured a pie, and divided the circumference by its diameter. When they arrived at the correct number (3.14) they were allowed to enjoy the fruit of their labor, so to speak.
SEVENTH GRADERS PARTICIPATE IN MATHCOUNTS Seventh Graders (from left) Shyamal Patel, Kyle Mooney, Alexandru Damian and Joshua Lee participated in the Chester County MATHCOUNTS competition at Great Valley High School. A total of 184 seventh and eighth graders from 24 schools participated this year. Congratulations to Kyle who finished in the top 25% of the competition. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to inspire excellence and curiosity in US middle school students through fun and challenging math problems.
FULMER EARNS SCOUT EMBLEM Congratulations to Seventh Grader Sean Fulmer who earned the Ad Altare Dei emblem as a member of Boy Scout Troop 430. The Ad Altare Dei (to the altar of God) program is to help Catholic Boy Scouts develop a fully Christian way of life in the faith community. PARENTS ASSOCIATION NEWS SPRING TIDE 2011 RAISES OVER $80,000 Spring TIDE 2011 - Wild Wild West - sponsored by the Devon Prep Parents Association turned out to be a rip-roaring success, raising more than $80,000. Over 200 parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Devon attended this annual event which began in Calasanctius Hall and ended in the gym. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Mike and Teri Magnotta and all the event chairs and committee members on a fun and successful evening. The fun began with a cocktail reception in Calasanctius Hall where the quartet “Old Time Music” entertained guests. After an hour everyone moved to the athletic facility for dinner, dancing and the silent and live auctions. There were cowboy hats, boots, checkered shirts and scarves everywhere as many of the attendees came dressed for the theme. The food was delicious, especially the unique appetizers served by some of Devon’s finest young men. The gym and school were beautifully decorated making for great photo ops, especially in front of Calasanctius Hall with Spring TIDE mascot, Beetle Baily. The equine, on loan from Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA), was being handled by Sara McCoy, Director of Horsemanship at VFMA.
Posing with Spring TIDE mascot Beetle Bailey, are from left, Event Chair Mrs. Teri Magnotta and Silent Auction Co-Chairs Mrs. Virginia Koehler and Mrs. Stephanie White.
Among this year’s auction items were vacation homes, sporting event tickets, music and theater tickets, jewelry, restaurant certificates, collectibles, college gear, theme baskets and Devon Prep memorabilia. In addition a raffle with three prizes, $10,000 in cash, $2,500 in cash, and an IPad was also held. Cocktails and Hors d’oeuvres were catered by Marie Clare’s Custom Cakes & Catering, and the Pig Roast/Dinner was catered by Luigi and Giovanni. Devon Prep students worked as servers throughout the evening helping with appetizers, dinner, and refreshments. SUPPORT THE DEVON PREP ANNUAL FUND The Devon Prep Annual Fund is a yearly appeal for contributions to support the current operations of the school, and it is a critical part of Devon Prep's fundraising efforts. It is money donated by trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends to provide additional resources to enrich the educational experiences of our students. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of providing a Devon Prep education. Tax-deductible Annual Fund gifts are a vital source of revenue. A strong Annual Fund helps to keep tuition affordable. Gifts to the Annual Fund are powerful because they go to work immediately and benefit every student, every day. Your gifts support scholarships and financial aid, professional development for our faculty, technology, athletics and classroom materials. For more information about the Annual Fund or to make a donation contact Jean Emhof, Director of Development at 610-688-7337, development@devonprep.com, or visit http://www.devonprep.com/support/giving.html.

IMPACT TEST Last year Devon Prep instituted the ImPACT Test program for all students to evaluate head injuries. This non-evasive, computerized exam is utilized in many professional, collegiate, and high school sports programs across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. The Test will be administered to all Devon Prep students through the Guidance and Health Department. This summer you will receive a letter and Consent Form from School Nurse Mrs. Devise Gavin explaining the ImPact Program . Please complete and return the Consent Form as soon as possible so your son can be tested early in the school year. Please address any questions to Mrs. Gavin at dgavin@devonprep.com or 610-688-7337, ext. 112. To access the Consent Form online: http://www.devonprep.com/ pdf/2010/ImPact-letter-permission-slip.pdf
