Dear Fellow Alumni, Since this is the first issue of the Epilogue since last year’s graduation (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa) I want to begin by congratulating and greeting the members of the Class of 2011. You are now receiving your first copy of the Epilogue. God willing, you will receive many more in the years and decades to come. The member of our soonto-graduate Class of 2012 will be featured in the next issue of our Epilogue. If our delay in getting that issue out to you even approximates the delay in getting this issue to you we will be truly deserving of a session in the woodshed. Our Class of 2011 this past year numbered sixty graduates. This is the second largest number in the history of our school (tied with my own Class of 1966). The Class of 1969, so far, has the record for the largest class. Unless we see a second “baby boom” sometime in the future, the Class of 1969 is likely to retain top honors in this area. The swearing-in of Dan Shields ’80 as U.S. Ambassador to Brunei was one of the major Devon Prep highlights of the past year. Devon Prep was represented at the reception and ceremony at the State Department in Washington by faculty members Mike Collins ’68 and myself ’66. In addition, Mark Pillarella ’80 and Greg Shields ’92 were present. It is a very great honor for the Devon Prep Alumni to have one of our own achieve such a distinguished 2

position. Congratulations, Dan! A major reason why Devon Prep is able to continually attract, educate, and graduate outstanding students is the fact that our school enjoys an outstanding reputation in the community. Many examples of this can be found on your (and my) favorite website www. devonprep.com. In recent years our Alumni Association has sponsored numerous Regional Alumni Reunions. Among the most recent such reunions are the ones in Annapolis, Maryland and New York City. Many thanks to all who helped, either in the planning and hosting of these reunions, or by attending them. Although not directly alumni related, we are very proud of our new solar car team. Led by Jacob Riedel ’13, this team was the only one from the entire state of Pennsylvania in the national competition last year. The team placed fourth this year in the nation at the Hunt-Winston Solar Car Challenge (see “Event Results” at www.winstonsolar.org/challenge) in Texas. The members of “The Devon Panel” covered a total distance of 378 miles using nary a drop of refined hydrocarbons. Much has changed at Devon Prep since my own days as a
student here back in the sixties. Solar cars, i-Phones in many a student pocket, electronic communications vastly more sophisticated than a rotary dial telephone, and so many other wonderful changes are now taken for granted by our students (and teachers). What has not changed at Devon Prep is the continued dedication of the Piarist Fathers and our lay faculty members to providing an education to our students which will prepare them for whatever changes lie in their future, May God bless all of you now and always. O
n June 4, 2011, sixty of Devon Prep’s students turned a major page in their lives, as they became alumni. This group of young men, the largest class since the sixty-nine member Class of 1969, was a distinguished group boasting multiple major accomplishments. The class accumulated a record $7.7 million in scholarships and was accepted to many prestigious institutions including Boston College, Hamilton, Lehigh, NYU, Tufts, Vassar, Villanova and Wake Forest. At the commencement ceremony, Class Valedictorian Harry G. Crimi Jr. summed up the vast accomplishments of the Class of 2011 and touched upon its one-of-a-kind unity by saying, “We are all intelligent, active, genuine and everything else that characterizes a typical class at Devon Prep. However, we, the Class of 2011, are so much more, which can be summed up in one word: brotherhood.” Harry also spoke of the highest regard for the faculty and staff of Devon Prep by saying, “We must admit that Devon Prep would not be the same without the exceptional teachers and memorable characters that made learning at this school not only their job, but also their lifetime goal.” Class Salutatorian, Nicholas A. Pancerella, spoke directly to his classmates in his address saying, “The future is ours, and it is filled with promise. As we leave Devon Prep, I challenge you to make it count.” He went on to say, “Do not be afraid to take chances, because some of your greatest opportunities will come through leaps of faith.” During the ceremony, an alumnus of the Class of 1972, Dr. Michael Shank, addressed the Class of 2011 in a humorous and meaningful commencement speech. Dr. Shank is a well known family doctor and geriatric specialist in Delaware County who still makes house calls, and he is also a faculty member of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Shank acknowledged the contributions to the lives of the graduates by the Piarist Fathers (those who founded Devon Prep and the present faculty members), the lay faculty, the Board of Trustees, the alumni, and their parents and families. He said that it was not necessary that he give any of the traditional advice found in commencement speeches. Rather, Dr. Shank told the class that they already knew what they needed to know, due to the exemplary preparation that Devon Prep had provided for life. In addition, the Devon Prep Alumni Association presented its Alumni Achievement Award to Albert E. Girod, Class of 1969. (See Alumnus Spotlight for more information.)

When Albert E. Girod graduated from college with a degree in Business Administration, the education and business sectors of our country were trying to determine how they could best use huge computers whose hardware filled rooms and which required the use of punch cards that ran through the machine. People were excited with thoughts about how advanced technology would increase efficiency and accuracy and become a significant benefit for businesses, investors and consumers. A small part of the business community began to figure it out, and Mr. Girod had the vision to be a part of this group. While employed by SEI Corporation as a shareholder and Vice President of Software Development, Mr. Girod co-developed

what was at the time the first online, real-time, interactive trust accounting and investment processing system called Trust-Aid. In 1984, he joined CDA Investment Technologies, Inc. as a partner and Vice President of Software Development where he was responsible for transforming the compa-

ny from print-based products and services to an electronic-based information company. CDA was acquired by Thomson Financial, a division of Thomson Reuters, in 1987 where Mr. Girod remained as CEO until 1995. During that

time, Mr. Girod acquired nine companies and expanded CDA’s business internationally. In 1995, Mr. Girod formed Financial Insight Systems Inc (FIS), a web-based application service provider and information company servicing Wall Street and the financial community. FIS developed and managed the web-based information portals for many financial institutions including the Nasdaq Stock Market. Additionally, FIS developed and managed the information systems which feed company fundamental and financial data to the Nasdaq’s Listing and Qualification system. FIS was acquired by EDGAR Online (Nasdaq:EDGR) where Mr. Girod remained as President until 2002. In 2005, Mr. Girod joined Convergent Wealth Advisors as a partner and served as President until 2010. Convergent is an independent wealth advisory firm that provides wealth management services with over $14 billion in assets under advisement. Convergent pioneered the open architecture investment approach which is now standard practice in the industry. Today, Mr. Girod serves as Founder and Managing Left: From Left - Fr. Partner of SSL Services, which is in the business of managing patents and intellectual property. In recognition of these accomplishments, Mr. Girod received the Devon Prep Alumni Achievement Award at the commencement ceremony in June 2011. He told the graduating students and their families that attending Devon was a life-changing event for him and that he is forever grateful to the school for educating him and preparing him for life, and to his parents for permitting him to attend Devon. He gave a few concrete examples about lessons from Devon that he came to understand over time, one of which was Fr. Senye’s oft-repeated comment that the students must “dare to be different.” Mr. Girod urged the Class of 2011 to follow their instincts and learn to say “no” rather than to just follow the crowd and always say “yes.” Based on an idea that grew from a discussion at his 40th re’74 - Started with SEI ’69 - Graduated from Devon Prep
union (which he helped organize), Mr. Girod along with Peter Connors and Pat Kennedy led the effort of the Class of ‘69 to establish the endowed 5’69 Scholarship Fund to honor the memory of their five deceased classmates: Paul Driscoll, Conrad Kruse, Chris Bonelli, Rich Fairbanks and Bill Wilson. The fund will provide financial assistance to an outstanding Devon student whose parents struggle to afford the best education possible. This is the first endowed alumni scholarship to be awarded. Class stewards for the fund are Mr. Girod, James Maule and Lee Schwarz.

By the way, if you question whether Fr. Senye ever gave the advice attributed to him by Mr. Girod, just go to page 84 of the 1969 Devon Prep yearbook. You will find a photograph of Fr. Senye addressing the graduating Class of 1969 with the caption, “Dare to be different.” That says it all.

n September 26, 2011, the Alumni Association hosted the Annual Marty Bowen Memorial Golf Outing at Bellewood Golf Club in Pottstown. The weather for this year’s outing was beautiful, as the golfers were treated to a warm, sunny afternoon. For the first time in three years, the Curran foursome was not the winner, although it did finish second. This year’s winning foursome was Andrew Fox ’05, Dan Heavey ’05, Ryan Shanley ’05, and Tim Gola ’07. After disrupting the string of consecutive victories by the Curran foursome, all were welcomed into the clubhouse for cocktails followed by dinner. Our headmaster, Fr. Jim Shea ’66, and Alumni Association President, Barry Mulhern ’72 were on hand to greet our golfers. The Alumni Association would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our sponsors, whose continued support enables the Alumni Association to function and continue to raise funds on behalf of Devon Prep. The Alumni Association is also grateful to those who helped organize the Golf Outing, in particular Ed Curran ’88 whose leadership was instrumental in another successful outing. We look forward to see everyone this September!

Alumni Gather in NYC, Annapolis I
n recent months, two alumni gatherings have taken place outside of the Philadelphia area. Most recently, RJ Bannister ’86 hosted a gathering on the roof of the New York Athletic Club, which offered superb views of the city and Central Park. Alumni from 1966 to 2005 were present. Travelling from Devon were Father Jim Shea ’66, Mike Collins ’68, Larry Iezzi, Matt Simon, Jean Emhof, Barry O’Reilly ’72 and Barry Mulhern ’72. Piarist Provincial Very Reverend Fernando Negro also attended, as did Charles Capasso ’05, Christian Capasso ’03, Michael Cleaver ’86, Kevin Gallen ’96, Brian Gavin ’96, Martin Leslie ’03, Kevin Magee ’72, Andrew O’Reilly ’03, Dr. Colin Phoon ’81, Kelvin Phoon, ’83, Justin Polselli ’04, John Quinn ’03, Thomas Santini ’66 and his wife Gisella, and Dr. Mark Stephen ’85 and his wife Lisa. Last fall, an alumni reception was held for those in the Maryland area. Senior Seminars Continue T
he continued presence of alumni returning to Devon to provide guidance and perspective on possible careers continued this year. Brothers Eric Nowak ’83 and Jeff Nowak ’85, recently returned to share their unique perspectives since graduating from Devon. Eric who attended UVA, spoke of the risks of joining a start-up, as well as his experiences working in the software industry. Jeff, now a sergeant with the Whitemarsh Township Police Force, spoke about his college career studying Criminal Justice at Penn State and the numerous responsibilities he has had throughout his 20 years of public service. Two members from the Class of ’63, Lloyd Roach and Vince Melograna, also returned to campus to share their insights about their careers. Although Lloyd left Devon after 3 years to join the Navy, he was awarded an honorary diploma from Devon in 2000. Vince attended the University of Dayton. Today the two work together at BranywineRadio.com, Lloyd as owner and Vince as Director of Sales. Class of 1996 alumni, Chris Turner and Dr. Joe D’Orazio also recently returned to discuss their college years, and careers in law and medicine respectively since graduating from college. They also spoke about different things they’ve found important along the way.

Senior Connell White ’12 Visits Haiti Many readers of the Epilogue may remember that when an earthquake devastated Haiti in January of 2010, three Devon Prep alumni rushed to the aid of the Haitians -- Dr. Tony Coletta ’71, Paul Browne ’72 and Bill O’Neill ’69. Now, two years after this devastation, another member of our Devon Prep community - Connell White - has also traveled to Haiti to help those in need. Connell traveled to Leogane, which is located just 18 miles from Port au Prince. Connell was in Haiti with his father, Dr. Francis J. White, who had recruited physicians, engineers, architects and volunteers to help improve the quality of life through Notre Dame’s Haiti Program (haiti.nd.edu). While in Haiti, Connell witnessed all of the devastation first hand. Recalling, “When you fly in, you fly right over a refugee camp, filled with tarps and wood boxes where people were living. It was pretty bad. The 2 ½ hour ride from Port au Prince to Leogane was just a continuous slum.” Despite all of this, Connell explained, “What I learned was that Haitian people are really proud. They have so lit-
tle and yet they are willing to share whatever they have. They seem really happy.” Connell also visited a Catholic church and orphanage while in Haiti, both of which were positive experiences for the Devon Prep senior. When visiting the Mary Queen of the Apostles Orphange, Connell was greeted by excited and grateful kids to whom he distributed soccer equipment, which was donated mostly by the Haverford Township Soccer
Club. Connell also attended Mass at the Saint Rose of Lima Church, which despite being in shambles from the earthquake, was still full, demonstrating the strong and unwaivering faith of the Haitians. All-in-all Connell says he would “love to visit again. It made me appreciate what I have, as trite as that sounds. It was really eye opening. Definitely, one of the best experiences of my life.”
18 Students Recognized as AP Scholars Congratulations to the 18 Devon Prep seniors who were named AP Scholars by the College Board. They were recognized for their extraordinary achievement on college level Advanced Placement exams taken last spring. Devon Hosts First Spanish Exchange This spring 18 Spanish exchange students (and three teachers) traveled to the United States and stayed with Devon families in the first Spanish foreign exchange program of its kind at Devon. A similar program has existed for many years for the German students. The 12 young women and six young men were from Colegio Cristo Rey, a Piarist Fathers’ School in Zaragoza, Spain. While only in the United States for two short weeks, the Spanish students visited New York, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Lancaster County. They were also able to enjoy a lacrosse game, a Sixers game, and a performance of Phantom of the Op-
era. Many of the students enjoyed American fast food, Hershey’s chocolate, and shopping at the King of Prussia Mall. As one of the
students remarked, “I’m not ready to go home yet. I would like to stay with my American family for two months.”

Hon. Mark L. Tunnell ’68 has been elected as judge in the Court of Common Pleas of Chester County after having been a partner at the Gawthrop Greenwood law firm in West Chester, PA for many years. Mark was sworn in as judge on 4 January 2012.

Dr. Daniel F. Battafarano ’73 has received the Outstanding Clinical Educator Award for 2011 from the Internal Medicine Residency at San Antonio Military Medical Center and an Outstanding Faculty Medicine Clerkship Award in 2011 from the University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio.
1980
Richard W. Hallihan ’80 is working at General Dynamics in Connecticut on the next generation nuclear submarine. Rich lives in Old Lyme at the mouth of the Connecticut River on Long Island Sound. Hon. Daniel L. Shields, III ’80 is the new U.S. Ambassador to Brunei. Dan is a career diplomat with the State Department and had previously served in China, Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines. Prior to his appointment, Dan had served as the Director of the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia at the State Department. After graduating from Devon, Dan received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and his master’s degree from the National War College.
1983
Paul C. Troy ’83 received the 2011 Montgomery County Bar Trial Lawyer Section’s Lawyer of the Year Award. He also was selected for a Fellowship
in the Litigation Counsel of America, whose membership is limited to less than one half of one percent of American lawyers. In addition to being an experienced and gifted trial attorney, Paul has a distinguished record of service to the Montgomery County Bar Association. He is a partner with Kane, Pugh, Knoell, Troy and Kramer, LLP in Norristown, PA.
1994
Jeffrey M. Krull ’94 has returned to the Philadelphia area after two years in Baltimore and has jointed Parente Beard as a partner. Jeff is working in the firm’s Corporate Governance and Risk Management practice.
1997
Rev. Gerald J. Olinger ’97 C.S.C. has been named Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Portland (Oregon). After graduating from Devon, Gerry earned a bachelor’s degree in history, and later his juris doctor degree and still later his master of divinity degree from the University of Notre Dame. Gerry was ordained to the priesthood in the Congregation of the Holy Cross in 2010. He was also one of the concelebrants here at Devon Prep for our Christmas Vigil Mass this past Christmas.
2001
John V. Rafferty ’01 was named by Super Lawyers as a recipient of their Pro Bono Award. Super Lawyers notes about John “While serving in the U.S. Navy in Bahrain, John chose a career in the law to enable him to most effectively give voice to survivors of both sex and labor trafficking.” In just two years John completed over three hundred hours of pro-bono service in Washington, DC, North Carolina, Mexico, and Ecuador.
Bits & Pieces John has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to return to Ecuador and study anti-human trafficking efforts there for the coming academic year.
2005
Daniel J. O’Shea ’05 is working at Stanford University toward his Ph.D. degree in neuroscience. A recent project of his involved allowing laboratory monkeys to control robotic arms by use of intracranial electrodes.
2007
Ryan P. Cassidy ’07 is a 2011 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College. Ryan is a published author, having contributed to a medial research article entitled “Genetic Mapping and Exome Sequencing Identify Variants Associated with Five Novel Diseases.” This article appeared in a medical journal and deals with research into diseases within the Amish and Mennonite communities.
2008
Christopher K. Born ’08 is co-oping with Space Exploration Technologies, better known as SpaceX, in Hawthorne, California. On May 25, SpaceX made history by becoming the first commericial company to dock with the International Space Station. Michael J. Dokas ’08 has graduated from Villanova University with a degree in Computer Science and a minor in History. Because of the A.P. courses taken at Devon Prep, Mike was able to complete his college studies in only three years. Mike is now working for Deloitte Consulting as a Business Technology Analyst. Mike is also the editor of our favorite publication, Epilogue.
Matthew S. Jaffe ’08 celebrated the feast of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain this past summer. The highlight of this annual celebration is the annual running of the bulls. Matt says that he was able to converse easily with the locals in Spain, simply because of the Spanish he had learned at Devon. Matt spent most of the summer working in Switzerland on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, searching for rare nuclear decay phenomenona. Matt has just graduated from Pennsylvania State University where he has received degrees in physics, in mathematics, and environmental science. In addition, Matt has a minor in nanotechnology. Kenneth A. Listwak ’08 recently graduated from Villanova University. Ken has been awarded a Levy Scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania Law School starting this fall. Brandon T. Mitchell ’08 was the Student Government President this year at the University of Miami, from which he has just graduated. Brandon majored in Sport Administration. At Miami Brandon he also served in the development of marketing and promotional activities for all University of Miami sporting events. Daniel G. Urdaneta ’08 interned at Morgan Stanley in New York City, holding a position in the Global Capital Markets group during the summer of 2011. Dan plans to work in the Invesment Banking division of Morgan Stanley upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business.

Brendan P. Fulmer ’10 is finishing his sophomore year at Loyola University Maryland, majoring in political science with minors in marketing and in history. Brendan is Director of Student Affairs for the Student Government Association at Loyola. Brendan was one of the many participants in World Youth Day last year in Madrid, Spain.
