Epilogue

A Magazine for Alumni, Alumni Parents, and Friends of Devon Preparatory School

Headmaster’s Message

Dear Fellow Alumni, I am happy that you are receiving this issue of the Epilogue not too long after the previous one. It appears that we are now getting back on a reasonable schedule for getting this publication out to you. One of the downsides to this, of course, is the fact that there is somewhat less news to report in this issue, since a much shorter time has elapsed since the publication of the last issue. This is a problem we are happy to have, since getting the newsletter out in a timely fashion is one of our key goals. As promised in the last issue, our recently graduated Class of 2012 is being featured in this issue of the Epilogue. I want to congratulate (again) this exceptional group of young men. Our school is tremendously proud of them. These newest members of our Alumni Association are now receiving their first copy of this august publication. It is expected that they will continue to do so for decades to come. However, during that time it is almost certain that our newsletter will no longer continue to see the light of day as a print edition. At present, we offer the Epilogue in both print and online forms, but the time is certainly coming when the print edition will go the way of the telephone book, computer documentation books, and so many other written materials that have already disappeared from the scene. At the graduation ceremo2

ny in June for the Class of 2012 one of our alumni received a major distinction. Barry Mulhern ’72 received the Alumni Achievement Award. Congratulations, Barry! For some time there has been a concern that our school has not been as responsive to alumni needs as some of us would like. Major steps have just been taken to help to resolve this problem. Our faculty member and my colleague Fr. Richard Wyzykiewicz ’61 has agreed to be our new Director of Alumni Relations. Not only does Fr. Richard have a deep knowledge of the workings of Devon Prep, he also knows the overwhelming majority of our alumni. Not only does Fr. Richard know our alumni, but he also has the personality, communication skills, and love of Devon Prep to perform outstanding service in this new responsibility. Fr. Richard will be assisted in his work by David Evans ’08, who has recently joined our faculty. In addition to his part-time teaching and coaching responsibilities, Dave also serves as our Assistant Director of Alumni Relations. Fr. Richard and Dave share space in our newly refurbished Alumni Office. Yes, that’s an actual room in Saint Anthony Hall (our newest building) and not just some sort of figment of the virtual imagination. Fr. Richard and Dave helped with the preparation and

organization of the golf outing on October 1 and have been busy planning the upcoming Reunion Weekend, Alumni Basketball Game, and Beef & Beer. More information on these events will be forthcoming. In the summer of 2011 our solar car team finished fourth in the United States at the HuntWinston Solar Car Challenge (see “Event Results” at www.winstonsolar.org/challenge) in Texas. This summer they performed even better, second in the United States. They covered four hundred five miles in 270 laps, powered only by “el sol.” I hope to see a good number of you (the local guys) at the Beef and Beer in November. May God bless all of you now and always. Cordially,

Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. Headmaster

Graduation

Class of 2012 Graduates, By: Joseph Geiger ’12

O

n June 2, 2012, forty-nine of Devon Prep’s students ended a chapter of their lives, as they became alumni. The Class of 2012 earned over $7.4 million in college scholarships. In addition they received acceptances to many prestigious colleges and universities, including Princeton, Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania, Fordham, Tufts, NYU, Notre Dame, the University of Miami, and Penn State. At the commencement ceremony, Class Valedictorian Matthew D. Swatski addressed his fellow graduates. Matthew explained the importance of staying connected to Devon. Matthew said, “It is not enough to just speak fondly of Devon, we must give back our time and energy to this place we call home. Visiting the school, attending baseball games and donating to Devon are just some ways we can stay connected. Devon Prep is a family and families stick together.” Class Salutatorian Chase Weber also spoke, advocating for his fellow graduates to use their talents and skills to make a difference in the world. “Looking around this room I see future pioneers from all fields of study. The world is facing a challenging time and as future leaders we have an obligation to influence the world for the better by maintaining our integrity and the morals that Devon has instilled in us.” He continued, “And it is up to each one of us to decide which of these paths we will take. Devon has opened the doorway to endless possibilities.” During the ceremony, Class of 1977 alumnus Dr. Frank X. Diebold addressed the graduating class with the commencement speech. Dr. Diebold gave a very practical speech. Dr. Diebold stressed the skills that these young men had learned, but he also added humorous anecdotes that lightened the atmosphere. He is the Paul F. and Warren S. Miller Professor of Economics, Professor of Finance and Statistics, Co-Director of the Financial Institutions Center at the University of Pennsylvania and its Wharton School, and uncle to Class Valedictorian Matthew Swatski. In addition to the speeches, Class of 1972 alumnus Robert B. Mulhern, Jr., Esq., received the Alumni Achievement Award. This award is presented to an alumnus who has significantly influenced and benefitted his profession. Mr. Mulhern serves as the General Counsel for Devon International Group (DIG), where he manages the legal activities of the DIG companies. Previously he was a partner at Swartz Campbell LLC in Philadelphia, specializing in the representation of individuals and corporations as defendants in litigation cases, focusing on the defense of medical malpractice and other complex litigation cases. He has been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer and a Certified Civil Trial Advocate by

the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Mulhern grew close with the graduating class throughout the year at the senior seminars. Mr. Mulhern faciltated the talks which were cherished by the seniors as they learned from alumni about the impact the skills they learned at Devon can have throughout their lives. As Mr. Mulhern graciously accepted the award, he implored the Class of 2012 to give back. “For those of us who came to Devon the idea was that if you succeed here, which all of you have done simply by getting this far, the expectations on you, and on us, are great. ... When people find that you went to Devon, they think you’re smart,” Mr. Mulhern continued. “They think you can get things done. They think you can help them. They think you can produce results. And we do. And we need you to join us in living up to that ideal. You guys are going to have great successes. And when you do we look for you to give back to your profession, to the community, and to Devon Prep.”

Annual O

Marty

Bowen

n Monday, October 1, 2012 the Alumni Association held its Annual Marty Bowen Memorial Golf Outing in Pottstown at Bellewood Golf Club. With nearly perfect conditions, over 60 golfers took to the links to enjoy a beautiful afternoon of golf. Following the round of 18, those who were up to the challenge participated in a putting contest, a new event for this year’s outing. Headmaster Fr. Jim Shea ’66 joined the group for a delicious gourmet dinner in the clubhouse after the putting contest. For the second year in a row, a new winner was crowned. This year’s winning foursome was Brennen McNichol ’06, Tom Ingelsby ’06, Dan Sweeney ’06 and Bill March ’06. The Alumni Association would like to thank everyone who made this year’s golf outing possible, especially our sponsors without whom this event would not be successful. Through the generous support of our golfers and sponsors, the Alumni Association was able to raise more than $15,000 on behalf of Devon Prep. The Alumni Association would also like to thank everyone on the committee that planned the outing, especially Ed Curran ’88 who led this year’s committee.

Alumnus Spotlight

Recent Grad Spends Summer By: Andrew Zaleski ’07 Felix deRosen’s travel logs read like the itinerary of a CIA operative: stints in the Gaza Strip and Yemen; a trip to Somalia, its significance a fixture in popular consciousness because of two downed Black Hawk helicopters; and, last summer, two separate trips to Iran and Afghanistan. Whereas kids who grew up on the Main Line outside Philadelphia spend summers at the Jersey Shore, Felix has been taking trips to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia since freshman year of high school. “That experience of controlled risk is a very meaningful one for me,” says Felix. “I’ve always enjoyed it. It’s always been a thrill.” Controlled risk, of course, meaning going to India and returning with the Giardia parasite. Or showing up in the Wakhan province of Afghanistan. Alone. The threat of adventure—

the term used quite literally in his case—doesn’t disturb Felix, now a senior at Harvard University studying anthropology and philosophy. Felix has lived on the edge of life for quite some time. A native Frenchman, Felix’s green card makes him legal in the United States. But because he was born in France, Felix never felt strongly attached to Philadelphia. Yet Felix’s treks in Iran and Afghanistan last summer embody much of the mythology so integral to Devon Prep’s own character: a courage to explore, a will toward understanding, a communion with risk and the rewards that might come. Felix himself talks as if he’s experiencing life in the third person, constantly and consistently observing his thoughts and movements. What compels you to travel as often as you do? “The answer to that question is also in part the answer to my life, so I’ll never have it fully answered.” What do you think you get out of going to a place like Afghanistan? “It’s sort of a condensed education. … When you go to really messed up places, you’re actually

experiencing things in real life.” At the roots of Felix’s traveling are the attacks of 9/11, an event that, irrespective of perspective, succeeded in further complicating an already endlessly convoluted world. Felix was just 11 years old at the time, but he says he was “really aware” of what he was hearing about Muslims and what his experiences with Muslim people had been. “I’ve always had a spirit of rebellion in me, and whenever people say one thing I try to prove them wrong,” says Felix. “One of the reasons that I went to this part of the world in the first place is because I felt like … people were making assumptions off of things they didn’t know. And when people don’t know things, there’s a natural assumption to generalize them out of fear.” Enter summers spent among Muslims in north and northeastern Africa and the Middle East. Felix’s journey last summer began in Iran, where he spent one night in a hotel and the rest of his nights sleeping on other people’s couches. “Being a couch surfer there is like heaven,” says Felix. “One guy just literally gave me his house for a week.” Perhaps most striking during his time in a country many of

Epilogue

Traveling Throughout Middle East us experience through condemnations of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a populace proud of its culture, even if it doesn’t always agree with the government. Highways dominated the landscape, along with the Internet, McDonald’s, and Domino’s Pizza. Radically different from Felix’s time in Iran was his time traversing Afghanistan’s Wakhan Province, the narrow corridor of land in the country’s northeast pointing toward China. While he didn’t couch surf, Felix spent many nights on the floors of villagers’ houses, or in guest houses in cities in northern Afghanistan prior to reaching the Wakhan. Culturally, he says, the Wakhan is home to some of the last authentic nomads in the world. It’s virtually inaccessible through routes within Afghanistan—Felix entered the Wakhan by way of Tajikistan— and is largely unspoiled, its isolation protecting it from the ravages of the Soviet-Afghan War and the subsequent Taliban takeover. Although people in the Wakhan have seen foreigners thanks to a fledgling adventure tourism industry in the region, Felix is one of the few foreigners they’ve seen walking around with a camera and a backpack. “It would take you three days to get there from Kabul,” Felix says. “[It’s] just the most outrageous place in the world.” He relied on what little Farsi he knew to facilitate communication, despite Farsi being an

educated man’s language there. Miming and impromptu sign language filled the gaps. At no time, Felix says, did he feel endangered. “I’d arrive at a village, they’d wave me over [and] just invite me in, bring me tea. Whether I’m a local or not doesn’t really make a difference for them,” he says. Toting a camera around perhaps helped. As Felix walked the roads of the Wakhan, people he passed stopped him and asked him to take their photograph. “What was happening was that for them … to have their picture taken is a service,” he says. “So I’m basically giving them a free service.” Still, the inherent danger that probably no traveler is ever without in such a country as Afghanistan is not lost on Felix. His idea of “controlled risk” is knowing how to effectively mitigate the instances where a run-in with a person on a road might not result in their enthusiastically requesting a spontaneous photo op. But it’s that uncertainty that propels Felix’s spirit of discovery. It’s not a boast, Felix’s penchant for traveling to locales the State Department advises

against. In the paradox of controlled risk—walking around an isolated province inside a wartorn nation—is the notion that as you give up some control of your surroundings, you grasp a deeper truth about yourself. Anthropologists call it the concept of the eternal other, Felix says. He sums it up a bit differently. “We don’t really become aware of who we are,” he says, “until we are confronted with something strongly different.”

Students Complete Summer Mission Trip This past summer, 24 students along with six chaperones and five students from Our Lady of the Assumption Church, traveled to Eastern Kentucky to lend a helping hand in one of the most impoverished areas of our country. Many alumni will remember this trip having taken place over Christmas break in years past. This year’s trip was an overwhelming success as the Devon students helped the Piarist School prepare for the new year. The group also painted the interior and exterior of a resident’s home, as well as demolished and rebuilt a deck and ramp. Afterwards, the resident remarked to one of the chaperones, “If all churches did what you have done, there would be no problems.”

New Gym Floor Continues Improvements Over the past few years, the Devon campus has seen a wide variety of new improvements, from the new entrance way to the baseball diamond. This past summer, the gym received a brand new floor, complete with a DP logo at center court. A dedication will be held on December 12, when the basketball team takes on Calvary Christian. All alumni are welcome to attend!

Ryan Fulmer, Sean Gillin, Daniel Liotta, Mac Lockard (son of James W. Lockard ’75), Mathew Magnotta, Hugh Phelan, Adam Swift, and David Welsh, all members of the Class of 2012, graduated after having attained the rank of Eagle Scout. It is believed that this number (eight) is the largest number of Eagle Scouts in any single Devon Prep graduating class. (Please correct me if you have any information to the contrary.) I do remember that there were seven Eagle Scouts in the Class of 2003. As I noted in my letter earlier in this issue, there is a minimum of new items for me to report in this section of our Epilogue.
