Soccer

On Friday both the Varsity and JV Tide opened their 2024 season with a nonleague matches against a highly-skilled Lower Moreland club. The shorthanded Varsity team were missing two of their regular starters, but started the game strongly, organized with their formations and proving hard to be broken down. A series of mistakes led to the opening goal for Lower Moreland, which took a 1-0 lead into the half. The second half started with the Lions adding to the lead, and a quick five minute lull saw the Tide go behind by 3 goals. The Tide tried to mount a comeback, scoring once, thanks to Drew Yusko ‘27, but missed a few chances late and fell to the Lions 1-3

In the JV match the Tide struggled to get anything by the Lions’ keeper. Even though the final score wasn’t in the Tide’s favor, the team showed a lot of fighting spirit. In the end, the JV team lost 0-4, but will look to get next week off to a better start on Monday against Episcopal Academy!

Golf

On Wednesday afternoon, the Varsity Golf team took on Lansdale Catholic at Linfield National Golf Course. It was a tough loss for the Tide, as they fell to the Crusaders 254-261; shots weren’t falling for the Tide as they expected. The team was led by Andrew Carroccio ‘27 and Pat Manion ‘27 - each with the score of 42 - while the rest of the team put up scores of 43 (Jude McCan ‘26), 44 (Gavin Schraegle ‘28), 44 (Chris Pullano ‘26), 46 (Gappy Ciocca ‘25), and 47 (Dan Dowling ‘27).

On Thursday, the Varsity team traveled to Glen Mills to take on St. Joe’s Prep in another PCL showdown. The match was all about playing Devon Prep golf and the team did that really well. While the team fell short to the Hawks 230-240, the loss was secondary to the lesson the team took away from yesterday’s round. The team was led by John Curran ‘25 with the score of 35, followed by Andrew Carroccio and Chris Pullano each with scores of 39.

Collectively the Tide all earned shot of the day by learning something about themselves from yesterday. Each golfer showed up and hit well off the tee box.

The round of the day goes to Chris Pullano, who posted a 39 one day after having a tough 9-hole score at Augusta North. Chris also only had 18 putts, which is great!

On Friday, the Varsity team traveled to Byrne Golf Course to take on Father Judge. The Tide played well and came up victorious with a score of 232-241! They were led by John Curran (33), Andrew Carroccio (34), and Scott Cunningham ‘28 (39).

The shot of the day goes to Gavin Schraegle. Gavin hit his tee shot into the rough and had a down-hill pitch onto a green that ran away from him. He was able to pull off some magic and hit the green, and keep it on for an easy two putt.

The round of the day Andrew Carroccio, who had only 14 putts on the day. The tee drill pays off!

Cross Country

On Friday night 6 of our DP XC runners participated in the Oakbourne Relays at Stetson MS. It’s a 2person Cross Country relay event, which is a great tune-up race to start the season! Our relay teams consisted of Pierce Rohlfing '25 and Sam Kleiner '25, Andres Garcia '28 and Charlie Krug '25, and Oliver Parenteau '28 and AJ Adams '28. All of the boys ran extremely well and enjoyed this unique experience!

New Baseball Coach!

On Wednesday evening the Athletic Department had the opportunity to introduce our new Head Varsity Baseball Coach, Michael Palumbo, and his Assistant Coaches to Devon Prep. Coach Palumbo spoke about his vision for Devon Prep Baseball and his goals for the future of the team. He comes to Devon Prep with many years of experience coaching, and is looking forward to helping the Tide achieve the success we all expect from the Baseball program! Welcome to Devon Prep, Coach Palumbo and coaching staff!

Athlete of the Week

Andrew Carroccio 27

This week’s Athlete of the Week goes to a member of the golf team that has not only played well but has also been a steady leader for his teammates. Sophomore Andrew Carroccio has helped the golf team get off to a hot start this season, and has consistently lowered his putts-per-round. Some athletes are great at playing their sport, but aren’t always able to share their confidence with the rest of the group—this isn’t an issue for Andrew. He’s taken his experience from anchoring the 2023 State Championship team and applied that knowledge and experience to his co-Captain role this year. Congrats on a great start to the season, Andrew!
