Soccer
On Wednesday, the Varsity Tide hosted Holy Ghost Prep on a beautiful September afternoon. The Tide played well and had plenty of opportunities offensively, but struggled to keep the Firebirds off the scoreboard, falling to the Firebirds 4-2. The Tide’s two goals were scored by Drew Yusko ‘27 and Blake Hostetter ‘27. The Tide planned to rebound from this loss later in the week as they hosted their first PCL match up of the year against Conwell Egan.
Also on Wednesday, the JV Tide also hosted Holy Ghost Prep. The Tide came out to a slow start as the Firebirds took an early lead, and never looked back. The Tide did counter to tie the game at 1-1, thanks to George Butoi-Teodorescu ‘28. But as the came found its grove, the Firebirds added to the score, taking control and running away with a 5-1 victory.
On Friday, the Varsity Tide hosted their first PCL match up of the season against Conwell Egan. We controlled the entire first half while playing extremely well with going into halftime with a 3-0 lead! Goals were provided by Nate Palermo ‘27 (2) and Drew Yusko ‘27. In the second half, though, the Tide struggled to contain the skill and speed of the Eagles as they slowly chipped away at the Tides lead. The Eagles tied the game at 3, and that score held until the final 10 minutes of the game, when they took a 4-3 lead over the Tide, which turned out to be the final score.
On Friday, the JV Tide also played Conwell Egan. The Tide had an excellent chance to score in the first half but the Eagles keeper made a great save off George Butoi-Teodorescu ‘28 and then again on the rebound to keep Devon off the board. Keeper Gustav Nadjek ’27 was peppered by the Eagles attack but played well in the first half, only allowing one goal. Despite strong play by Joey Hamill ‘28, Calan Gibson ‘28 and Brendan Brady ’28, the Tide allowed two more goals in the 2nd half. They battled to the last whistle in a tough 3-0 loss.
On Saturday morning, the Middle School Tide opened up their 2024 CYO season while hosting St. Max! They were extremely excited to finally play in their first game and it showed. Devon played very well throughout the entire game, and came away with a solid 2-0 victory! Goals were scored by Teddy Thiel ‘30 and Connor Monteleone ‘30. Both Jackson Fisher ‘29 and Nathan Quinn ‘29 split halves in goal to have a combined shut out for the Tide!
Golf
On Tuesday afternoon, the Varsity Tide traveled to Whitemarsh Valley Golf Club to take on La Salle in a PCL showdown. As most matches are for the Tide, it was another close match, and they fell to the explorers 242-257. But they plan to use this match as motivation as they’ll have another chance at La Salle at the PCL Championships later in the season. The Tide were led by John Curran ‘25 (36), Chris Pullano ‘26 (40), and Andrew Carroccio ‘27 (41). The Tide turned their attention to their next match, taking on Unionville on Thursday afternoon at Linfield.
On Thursday afternoon, the Varsity Tide hosted Unionville at Linfield National in a non-league match up. Both teams were very evenly matched and the score reflected that. As well as the Tide played, they fell just short, 182-185. This match showed the Tide that they can compete with 3A teams. The Tide were led by Andrew Carroccio ‘27 (36), Gavin Schraegle ‘28 (26), John Curran ‘25 (37), Danny Dowling ‘27 (37), and Pat Manion ‘26 (39). The Tide will shake off this hard fought loss as they prepare for their upcoming matches next week!
Cross Country
On Saturday, the Tide competed in the PTXC Invitational, which was their first official 5K meet of the Cross Country season! Sam Kleiner ‘25, Charlie Krug ’25, and Pierce Rohlfing ‘25 were the top three Devon finishers, running a 19:14, 20:10 and 20:14, respectively! Brady Smith ‘27 led the Tide JV crew, finishing with a Personal Record of 22:45. There were 13 Devon runners competing on Saturday, many for the first time, and they showed great results. We’re looking forward to our first PCL Meet this Wednesday, September 11th at Belmont Plateau!
Athlete of the Week
Connor Monteleone ‘30
This week’s athlete of the week is awarded to 7th grader Connor Monteleone! Connor has not only excelled on the soccer field, but also in the classroom. He’s become a great leader, classmate, and teammate since coming to Devon Prep! On Saturday Connor helped lead the Tide Middle School Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over St. Max, scoring one of those goals himself! We look forward to seeing Connor continue his success throughout the entire Fall season!
