Soccer

On Saturday morning, the Tide MS soccer team competed in the first round of the Region 17 CYO Playoffs against St. Peter & Paul. This was a rematch of a very close contest from earlier in the season, where the Tide fell to SSPP 4-3. The Tide was back for redemption but unfortunately the Tide fell short in taking down SSPP. The Tide play well but unfortunately, they couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. The closest opportunity the Tide had was when JJ Murphy rang a great shot off the crossbar. Due to this, the Tide wrapped up their 2024 season in a hard fought match. Each player left their heart out on the field and kept their head held high. We would like to thank all the efforts from everyone, especially our 8th graders who will now advance to the HS team next fall. Good luck at the next level Jackson Fisher ‘29, Gill O’Nell ‘29, Max DiBona ‘29, JJ Murphy ‘29, Logan Wagner ‘29, Nathan Quinn ‘29, and Nick Lanigan ‘29.

Golf

At States, John Curran ‘25 competed for a chance to be the Individual State Champion. John would finish his first round at +1 (73) on the Blue Course. This first day score gave John a chance to compete on day two, and he took advantage of every opportunity. John played his lowest round of the year with a bogey-free 67 (-5), that easily could’ve been a 64 had a couple of putts fallen. John ended up finishing second in state this year, which will ultimately secure John’s place as one of the best golfers to ever play at Devon Prep. That left only the team match as the final test of the year.

The boys came out firing during the team match and ultimately held a lead at the turn, thanks to stellar play by Chris Pullano ‘26, Scott Cunningham ’28, and Dan Dowling ‘27. With nine holes to play, the team did everything they could to fire at pins and make putts, especially Andrew Carroccio ’27, who fired a two-under par on the back nine, and the always steady John Curran ‘25 par score. Ultimately, the boys played to a third-place finish as two other teams shot nearly perfect scores collectively. This year’s third place finish was impressive especially considering we had two players in their first every Varsity golf year (both Scott and Dan played two sports all season). This year’s team has set a high bar for those returning next year, where we expect to see more great golf. Congrats to all the boys and best of luck to the seniors as they chase down bigger dreams.

Cross Country

This past Thursday, the Tide competed in the District 12 1A Championships at Belmont Plateau. They knew there was a chance of the entire Varsity team qualifying for States - all they needed to do was to place first or second overall. Everyone was nervous - this was their biggest meet of the season. The Tide achieved their goal by placing first overall, with Sam Kleiner '25 winning first place, with a time of 18:59!

The next 4 runners finished in the Top 10, with Charlie Krug '25 placing 3rd, Pierce Rohlfing '25 placing 4th, Arie Van Turnhout '28 placing 6th and Andres Garcia '28 placing 8th!Manny Strid '28 placed 12th and Caleb Garecht '27 placed 16th, and both ran their personal bests on the difficult Belmont course!

The JV Team was also there to cheer on the Varsity squad and celebrated their victory together! This Saturday, the Tide will compete in the PIAA State XC Championships! Congratulations to the entire XC Team!

Congratulations to the MS cross country team on an outstanding finish to the season at the CYO Championship Meet on Saturday. Just as the temperature dropped for a beautiful fall day, so did the runners' times! In a crowded Minor Boys' field, Hugo Derval ‘31 (12:09) and Jack Bourdow ‘30 (14:18) ran their fastest times yet, with Jack taking over a minute off his previous best. In the Cadet race, all the boys gave incredible effort, resulting in a ninth place team finish out of 19 teams. Trevor Heebner-Elliott ‘29 (15:26) and Ryan Aufiero ‘30 (16:03) finished 20th and 27th, respectively, each beating their previous best by close to a minute. At 18:40, Hayden Barbera ’29 was one of the biggest surprises of the day, beating his previous best by several minutes. He and Fred Tucker ’29, who ran 19:43, both broke the 20 minute mark for the first time. Evan Martin ’29 joined the PR party, too, running his best yet with a time of 20:20. We look forward to celebrating your incredible achievements this season at the Fall Sports Banquet on November 4th.

Crew

This weekend's Head of the Schuylkill consisted of 2500 entries competing over two days from the entire east coast, Canada, and the midwest. Over two days, high school, collegiate, and master rowers raced in over 150 categories based on age, experience, and gender.

This race is a reminder of the distance the program needs to go to compete against the top programs in the region. While the team has worked hard this fall and put in a lot of hours on the river, the gap we face in terms of time on water and aerobic base will take some time to close.

Credit goes to the team for excellent effort and to Brendan Cuff ‘27, Nishan Shamlian ’25, Teddy Marvin ‘27, and Sal Albert ‘27 for racing the 4400 meter course twice!

Men's High School Quad (Frosh/Novice): 13th out of 20 (Sacunas ‘28, Sevag ’28, Williams ‘28, Vickers ’27)
