Volume 1, Issue 7 Spring / Summer 2010
Congratulations Class of 2010
Devon Prep’s Class of 2010 graduated on Saturday, June 5 in the school’s athletic facility. Rev. Mario Vizcaino, Sch.P., Provincial of the Piarist Fathers USA Province, presided over the ceremony. The 56 seniors received over $7.6 million in college scholarships and more than 250 acceptances to nearly 100 schools, including Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth, the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, the US Military Academy at West Point, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Lehigh, Bucknell, and Carnegie Mellon, among others. Among the graduates were 26 AP Scholars, 18 with Distinction, two National AP scholars, 12 National Merit Scholars, nine National Merit Scholarship Winners, and six Eagle Scouts.
“A school can spend millions on new buildings and expensive upgrades, but there is no substitute for good people... Devon is rich where it matters most.” Ted Lawrence ‘10
In addition, this senior class performed over 1800 hours of community service doing everything from collecting medical supplies for earthquake victims in Haiti to raising over $35,000 for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The commencement ceremony began with a Salutatory Address by Robert M. Smith who told his fellow graduates, “Change will come, but it is important to keep our memories of this place alive, to keep the friendships we made here for times both good and bad, and to always retain the moral values this school has taught us. Use the talents given to you, not for your own benefit, but for the good of others. To whom much is given, much is expected. “ In his address, Class Valedictorian Theodore J. Lawrence chose to thank those who influenced him most, his parents, fellow classmates, and the Devon Prep faculty. “The teachers make the school what it is. They dedicate their time, their knowledge, and their undivided attention to educating us and giving us the tools we need to be leaders in the future, “he said.
“When it comes right down to it, Devon is not about its exterior. At the heart of Devon Prep are its people,“ Lawrence explained. “A school can spend millions on new buildings and expensive upgrades, but there is no substitute for good people…. Devon is rich where it matters most.” “My message for all of you today, “ he concluded, “is to not lose sight of what really matters. It’s easy in today’s society to get wrapped up in materialism…. But, ultimately, material things are trivial and insignificant. There is more to life than frivolous pursuits. It is the people in our lives who really matter. I pray that we never lose sight of this. May Devon serve as our example of this lesson. We are truly blessed to be part of such an incredible community.”

FATHER NELSON ORDAINED TO THE PRIESTHOOD Celebrates His First Mass at Devon Prep Father Nelson Henao, Sch. P. was ordained to the priesthood in St. Norbert’s Church by Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia on March 27. He fulfilled his dream of joining the Piarist Fathers, the religious order of priests that conducts Devon Prep, with over 300 guests as witnesses, including Rev. Mario Vizcaino, Sch.P. the Provincial Superior of the Piarist Father’s USA Province, as well as priests, students, parents, alumni, and friends. Several of his immediate family members also traveled from South America and Germany to attend this special event. Father Henao’s journey began 55 years ago in Bogota, Columbia where he was born the oldest of five children. He studied in Catholic schools throughout his childhood and as a young man he pursued studies in the Hotel and Restaurant Management field. In the late 1990’s, after many years of secular life, he went through a long process of rediscovering his faith and felt the call of God to serve His people. In 2002 he decided to enter religious life by joining the Piarist Fathers. For more on the ordination go to: http://devonprep.com/fr nelson ordination.html For information and photos of Fr. STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO FOREIGN LANGUAGE HONOR SOCIETIES During Devon Prep’s World Language Honor Society Induction ceremony more than 50 sophomores and juniors were told that studying a foreign language would prepare them well for a global society. “Survival in today’s global community begins with individuals who have language abilities,” explained the evening’s speaker, Rev, Nelson Henao, Sch.P., Devon Prep faculty member and a native of Bogota, Columbia. “They can bridge the gap between cultures; contribute to international diplomacy; promote national security and world peace; and successfully engage in international trade.” Before an audience of parents and family members 32 students were inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS), 17 into the French National Honor Society (FNHS), and four into the German Honor Society (Delta Epsilon Phi) for excellence in their language studies. The inductions included a candle lighting ceremony and distribution of honor cords for the seniors. Father Nelson also discussed the difficulties of learning a new language as well as the importance of doing so. “Learning a new language opens up opportunities, and gives you perspectives that you might never have encountered otherwise,” he said. “Learning a new language gives the learner the ability to communicate and understand a culture on its own terms,” Father Nelson continued. ” In a world where nations and people are ever more dependent upon one another to supply goods and services, resolve political disputes, and ensure international security, understanding other cultures is paramount. “ Induction into each of the societies requires at least two years of study in the language with at least a 3.5 average. Each society also requires community service. The new inductees include: SPANISH NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning.
Approximately 8,200 winners of National Merit Scholarship Awards are chosen from the 15,000 Finalists, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. A variety of information is available for selectors to evaluate–the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada.
Several types of National Merit Scholarship Awards are available, including:
NATIONAL FRENCH CONTEST WINNERS Congratulations to the following Devon Prep students who earned awards in the National French Contest this year. Junior Christophe Rodelli was named a National Winner Sophomore Adam Swift was named a Local Winner. Senior Brendan Coyne, Junior John Kiely, Freshmen Cole Hassett, Ryan Mattox, Jacob Riedel, and Thomas Seykora earned Honorable Mentions Le Grand Concours, the National French Contest, is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French in the form of a 60 minute national test. Its purpose is to help stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of French and help identify and reward achievement on the part of both students and teachers.
National Merit® $2500 Scholarships Every Finalist competes for these single payment scholarships, which are awarded on a state representational basis. Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans. Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship Awards Corporate sponsors designate their awards for children of their employees or members, for residents of a community where a company has operations, or for Finalists with career plans the sponsor wishes to encourage. College-sponsored Merit Scholarship Awards Officials of each sponsor college select winners of their awards from Finalists who have been accepted for admission and have informed NMSC by the published deadlines that the sponsor college or university is their first choice. Special Scholarships Every year some 1,500 National Merit® Program participants, who are outstanding but not Finalists, are awarded Special Scholarships provided by corporations and business organizations. Twelve Devon Prep seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP) this year, three as Commended Students and nine as Finalists.
REV. GERRY OLINGER ’97 SPEAKS TO SENIORS Class of ’97 Alumnus Rev. Gerard J. Olinger returned to Devon Prep on May 24 to speak to the senior class. Father Gerry, who had been ordained to the Congregation of the Holy Cross in April, also celebrated Mass in St. Mary’s Chapel that morning. Following his graduation from Devon Prep Father Gerry earned both a bachelor’s degree in history and government and a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame. He is a member of the bar in both Pennsylvania and Indiana. Gerry entered the candidate program at Moreau Seminary in 2004. Prior to his profession of perpetual vows with the Congregation of Holy Cross and his ordination to the diaconate in August 2009, he was awarded a master of divinity degree from the University of Notre Dame. During the past year, he was assigned to the University of Portland where he has served as a transitional deacon in the Offices of Campus Ministry and Residence Life. Fr. Gerry spoke about his experience at Devon Prep and how well prepared he was for his college years at the University of Notre Dame. He also talked about his vocation, telling seniors that the idea of being a priest first came to him in elementary school and “was always there” in the back of his mind all through high school, college and graduate school. When he graduated from college he wasn’t sure what to do next. He knew he needed to do something he was passionate about. He went onto law school, and although he enjoyed it, it was not his passion. That came with his religious life. When he decided to join the Congregation of the Holy Cross, he found what he had been searching for. “I found a lot of joy and a lot of passion,” he said. “If you do what God is calling you to do, you’ll find the joy, passion and peace you are looking for in your life.”

Peffley, who serves as Pastor of Holy Trinity Church in the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, is an accomplished juggler. He juggles fire torches, machetes, soccer balls, bowling pins and various other items. He did all of this for the seniors as well as give several students a lesson in juggling as well. ATHLETICS BASEBALL TEAM WINS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
Devon Prep’s Varsity Baseball team, under coach Mark Aquilante, won the PIAA Class AA District 1 Championship against New Hope-Solebury in early June. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer: Senior Ian Smith, backed by solid defense, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and guided the Tide to the championship with the 11-5 win. He entered the game in relief with the bases loaded, no outs and a 2-0 count. He got two infield pop-ups and a fly ball to center field to end the threat. Devon's victory ended New Hope's three-year reign as District 1 champion and avenged an 11-7 regular-season loss suffered on May 11. This is the first baseball championship for us since 1996," coach Aquilante said. "We lost to New Hope the past couple of years, so this is a great win for our kids. They deserve a ton of credit." Sophomore John LaPrise had two doubles, two RBIs and scored two runs, while senior Joe Donatoni drove in three runs and scored three times and Smith went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. After winning the district title, the TIDE moved on to the PIAA Class AA state playoffs. Unfortunately, their season ended with a 10-2 loss to District 11 champions, Catasauqua, in the opening round. Congratulations to the team on a great season (18-5). To see more photos: http://www.devonprep.com/baseballchamps2010.html

SUPPORT THE DEVON PREP ANNUAL FUND The Devon Prep Annual Fund is a yearly appeal for contributions to support the current operations of the school, and it is a critical part of Devon Prep's fundraising efforts. It is money donated by trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends to provide additional resources to enrich the educational experiences of our students. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of providing a Devon Prep education. Tax-deductible Annual Fund gifts are a vital source of revenue. A strong Annual Fund helps to keep tuition affordable. Gifts to the Annual Fund are powerful, because they go to work immediately and benefit every student, every day. Your gifts support scholarships and financial aid, professional development for our faculty, technology, athletics and classroom materials. For more information about the Annual Fund or to make a donation contact Jean Emhof, Director of Development at 610-688-7337, development@devonprep.com, or visit http://www.devonprep.com/support/giving.html.
