Happy Holidays to our Diablo Country Club Members and Staff!
I look forward to spending my first Holiday Season out on the West Coast. As I drive in each morning and out at night, the lights and decorations on Alameda Diablo reinforce my appreciation of what a special place Diablo Country Club and the Diablo community is. I love the change of seasons and all the fall colors reminds me of the years I spent in the Northeast.
I want to thank all the members for your support since my arrival. More importantly, I want to acknowledge the managers and all the staff for adopting, supporting, and implementing all the changes and new procedures that have been put into place, both from service and fiscal standpoints. Change is not always easy and welcome, but the Club is changing for the better. Over the past few months, we have been instilling a culture of ownership and initiative with the team. Our fiscal year began on November 1st with new goals and financial reporting tools to challenge the departments and hold the team accountable. The Club’s success will relate to their success, personal and professional.
As I mentioned before, thank you for supporting me and the staff. Your support of the Club is just as important. Every member is a representative and sales proponent for DCC. The guests and friends you bring to your Club are an affirmation of that support. We have seen a steady increase in dining counts, golf rounds, childcare usage, tennis, fitness and pickleball. I keep hearing that “the Club is alive again!”
As we head into the new year, the teams are developing more programs to engage our membership. Be on the lookout for a Winter Cornhole League! Chef Andy’s new seasonal menus will be rolling out as this newsletter is being published. He will be incorporating some old favorites to mix with the new.
Happy Holidays and I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

The Northern California Open golf tournament, inaugurated in 1920, drew the best of the west coast golfers for over a century. The career launching-pad for many local professional, the past winners list includes PGA Hall of Famers and Major Championship winners like Jock Hutchison, Macdonald Smith, Lawson Little, Charlie Seaver, Art Bell, Jim Ferrier, Dutch Harrison, Tony Lema, George Archer, Xander Schaufele.
Following our success in hosting the 1957 championship, Diablo Professional Lyle Wehrmen quickly orchestrated the return of the Northern California Open to Diablo in 1966. The Club had last served as host in 1957, and the membership was treated to yet another display of golf excellence. Headlining the field of 51 professionals and 21 amateurs was George Archer, Bay Area professional and two-time champion. Since turning professional in 1964, George was enjoying immediate success, with his greatest triumph, the 1969 Masters, still in his future. His strongest challenger, and one of the newer professionals in the field, Dick Lotz, had yet to capture his first Open victory.
The gallery followed closely from the number one tee box on the first playoff hole, and Ed Schoenfeld of the Oakland Tribune reported, “Lotz appeared to have had it lost when Archer holed out a 40-foot pitch and run shot … Part of the gallery began walking back towards the Clubhouse convinced that Archer, who won $60,000 on this tour this year, has slammed the gate in the face of his East Bay rival.”
The 36-hole event did not disappoint spectators. With two holes remaining, Archer was down one stroke from the leader., Dick Lotz. A birdie on 17 by Archer tied him with Lotz, and both men secured birdie fours on 18, ending up with six-under par 135’s for the 36 holes. A playoff was needed to determine the 1966 Northern California PGA Open Championship.
But Lotz, his ball lying above the hole just off the green and twenty-five feet away, stroked a putt that rolled downhill and broke right to land in the hole and force a second playoff hole. At the second tee box Lotz exclaimed, “The man upstairs is looking after me!”
Archer has scored birdie-birdie on number two in the first two rounds, but a par on his second playoff hole opened the door for Dick Lotz. A 30foot “hooker” dropped into the hole and gave the 24-year-old his first Open victory.
DAVID MACKESEY, Club Historian
After 21 years of dedicated service, Christina Lynch has made the decision to move on from Diablo to pursue new professional opportunities. While we will certainly miss her, we support her decision and wish her the best as she takes this next step in her career.
Christina’s journey with Diablo began in 2003 in food & beverage, and over the years, she grew to play a vital role in many aspects of the Club, including retail, accounting, and human resources. She was promoted to HR Director, where she served with distinction for 13 years, before adding membership management to her responsibilities. Since 2019, she has been our Membership Director, a role in which she has made a significant and lasting impact.
Throughout her time with Diablo, Christina consistently demonstrated commitment, professionalism, and a strong work ethic. Her contributions have helped shape the Club into the thriving community it is today, and we are
grateful for her years of service.
As we begin the process of finding a new Membership Director, the management team of Jerome Louie, Andrew Lombard and Nikole Rubyn will share the Membership duties. Please direct any membership related questions to Jerome’s attention: generalmanager@diablocc.org. We appreciate your patience during this transition period as we ensure that all responsibilities are smoothly transferred.
Christina’s last day with us was November 22nd, and while we will miss her presence at Diablo, we wish her every success in the future. Please join us in extending your best wishes as she moves forward in her career.
Happy Holidays from the Diablo Kitchen! This festive season, we’re drawing inspiration from family traditions, and the warm, comforting scents and tastes that bring us together. For me, the holidays evoke vivid memories of my mother cooking in the kitchen, the air filled with the aromas of cinnamon, citrus, and cranberries. These three versatile ingredients are the stars of our December creations, and we’re excited to share them with you.
CRANBERRIES – From their tart brightness to their ability to elevate both savory and sweet dishes, cranberries are a true holiday staple. This month, you’ll see them used in everything from crunchy salad garnishes to luscious sauces and chutneys. They’ll even enhance hearty entrees like rich, slow-braised short ribs.
CITRUS – Winter is citrus season, and we’re celebrating with the finest navel oranges, blood oranges, tangerines, and lemons. These vibrant fruits will shine in specials such as:
∙ Soy & Citrus Sea Bass
∙ Duck Confit with Mandarin Oranges & Dates
∙ Roast Lamb with Oranges, Lemons, & Black Pepper
∙ Avocado, Orange, & Jicama Salad
Each dish highlights the versatility of citrus, adding brightness and balance to your dining experience.
CINNAMON – This wonderfully aromatic spice evokes warmth and comfort, perfect for both sweet and savory creations. Cinnamon’s health benefits—rich in antioxidants and antiinflammatory properties—make it a great addition to any dish. Looking forward to:
∙ Cinnamon Apple Butter
∙ Flavorful Moroccan-Inspired Dishes
∙ Decadent Holiday Desserts
KATIA’S HOLIDAY CREATIONS
Katia is infusing her desserts with holiday spirit, featuring the best of cinnamon and citrus. Some highlights include:
∙ Lemon Curd Tart
∙ Honey Cake
∙ Citrus Frosting
∙ Flaky Blood Orange Tart
We’re thrilled to bring these festive flavors to your table and create new holiday memories together. Wishing you a season filled with warmth, joy, and delicious moments.
Happy Holidays!

Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent almost forty years establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Napa Valley wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978 to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.
The quality of Duckhorn Vineyards wines has always been based on a commitment to selecting the finest fruit. Whether carefully sourcing grapes from top sites in the Napa Valley or committing itself to establishing a world-class estate vineyard program, the winery was built on the belief that great wines begin in the vineyard. At Duckhorn Vineyards this has always meant an emphasis on site and terroir. Beginning in 1988, hand-selected Napa Valley properties were purchased for the estate vineyard program, guaranteeing a consistent source of high-quality
The Holiday Season is upon us and cold weather golf is here to stay for a few months. There are a few things that happen to both the golf course and the golfer when the weather gets cold. Both are important to understand and to maximize our golf experience.
The Bermuda grass on our golf course goes dormant, which is why it turns brown in the winter. The grass was planted to conserve water usage, with it being dormant we do not need to water it as much. This also means that it will not grow, so there will be more divots in the fairways, as they will not fill in during the winter months. With the current amount of play, there will be divots out there, but please be aware that they will grow back in the spring when the weather gets warmer.
The Bentgrass on the greens and surrounds will still grow, although it is a slow process. It is especially important to fix your ball marks on the greens and surrounds correctly because they will heal. An incorrectly fixed ball mark will last much longer during the winter months, as the grass grows slowly. If you need a refresher on how to properly fix a ball mark, click here to watch a video.
Lastly, frost delays start to occur frequently, and no one likes frost delays! We delay golfers on the grass during the delay because walking on frosted grass can rupture plant cells and leave behind lasting damage. We understand the frustration and want to get out on the course, but we must protect the course!
Playing golf when it is cold is not an easy task. The golf ball does not go as far (heavy air), nor does it roll out. Golf courses play long! Diablo Country Club, when it is dormant Bermuda gets wet and mushy, becomes exceedingly difficult to make solid contact with both iron play and chipping. This is when we start to play the golf ball on the ground and keep it simple!
When it is cold it is imperative to keep your core warm, creating the flexibility needed to make a full turn. We can do that with layers, like vests, but also with new material that is lightweight and traps the heat close to your body. Also, the most important part to keep warm is our hands. I like to use Gortex gloves or the electric hand warming from Gtech, both great ways to keep the hands warm!
Let the Golf Staff know if you need any help with either playing on the turf of Diablo in the winter or needing to gear up for winter golf, we are here to help!
Remember, golf is really hard!

Looking for new golf friends or a way to get more involved off the course? Women’s Golf Programs at Diablo offer the perfect opportunity to connect, compete, and have fun—no matter your skill level!
Did you know that almost 200 women at Diablo belong to one or both of our two vibrant women’s golf groups? Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced player, there’s a place for you in the Diablo Niners or the Diablo Women’s Golf Group (DWGG). These groups are not only about golf—they’re about building friendships, finding new playing partners, and having a great time both on and off the course.
The Diablo Niners: Golf with a Social Twist
The Diablo Niners is a fun, relaxed social group of over 100 women, ranging from beginners to seasoned players. With no handicap requirement, this group is perfect for women of all abilities, from low teens to upper 40s handicaps. The Niners meet Tuesday mornings for a casual nine-hole round, and the group hosts numerous social tournaments and events throughout the year.
If you're looking for something a little extra, check out their new “Take the Turn” program—designed for those who want to play more than nine holes but still keep it fun and casual.
The Diablo Women’s Golf Group (DWGG): Fun with a Competitive Edge

This group welcomes women of a wide skill range (max handicap of 39) who are eager to play a full 18 holes and compete in weekly flighted competitions (based on your handicap). But it’s not just about the score—it’s about embracing the challenge, honing your skills, and
having fun with friends, all while upholding the true spirit and integrity of the game.
In addition to weekly competitions, this group hosts several large tournaments each year including two themed invitationals where members compete in teams with guests while enjoying Diablo’s stunning course.
Both groups enjoy annual golf excursions to beautiful destinations like Tahoe, Carmel, and Yocha Dehe, and they come together for special events such as the Halloween tournament, costume contest, and social luncheons. Joining either group is a fantastic way to get involved and meet women who share your passion for golf.
When you join, you'll be paired with a New Member Liaison who will help you get acquainted with the group and show you the ropes. After that, you’ll be able to sign up for events and join a group of friendly golfers—no need to know anyone when you start, because that’s the beauty of joining! You’ll quickly make new friends and playing partners.
Whether you’re new to the game or just new to the club, you’re officially invited to join one (or both!) of our women’s golf groups. Don’t wait until you feel your game is “ready”—get started today and improve your game while building lasting friendships!

As we head into a new year, many of us are setting fresh tennis goals, especially with USTA ratings in December and league seasons, East Bay leagues, and tournaments starting in January. It’s an exciting time to aim high, whether that’s improving your rating, ranking, or just developing as a player.
Often, a few months in, or after a rough match or two, we lose sight of those initial goals. Instead of staying focused, we start chasing the next win, letting our original goals slip away. When we focus solely on winning, we can miss the opportunity to make real, lasting progress.
So, how do you set goals and keep yourself on track?
1. Create a Goal Plan: Break down your goals into short (3 months), medium (6 months), and long (12 months) time frames.
2. Identify Areas for Improvement: Knowing what to work on is the first step.
3. Commit: Decide how much time and energy you’re willing to invest in reaching your goals.
Here’s an example of a goal-setting approach: Goal: Improve my serve.
• Short-Term Goal (3 months): Develop a consistent second serve with topspin. Consider working with a coach on technique, then practice independently to build muscle memory. PLAN: Practice two times a week, hitting 50 second serves each session.
• Medium-Term Goal (6 months): Increase firstserve percentage and pace. Work with a coach on swing speed and add off-court exercises to build strength. PLAN: Focus on first serves only, maintaining twice-a-week sessions with 50 serves each.
• Long-Term Goal (12 months): Use your serve to take control of points, setting yourself up for more aggressive play.
By setting clear, actionable goals and committing yourself to regular practice, you’ll be setting yourself up for a fantastic year of improvement. Stick to the plan, stay focused, and enjoy the journey!
Our Junior Tennis Program is in full swing with an impressive 56 young players participating! As we move into December, sign-ups for our junior clinics are now open, and we’re excited to keep the momentum going strong.
Keeping everyone informed and organized is key, so please make sure your child is registered and that we have your current contact information. This helps us keep our communication clear and ensures we’re staffed appropriately to support each player’s development.
To allow families time for upcoming holidays, there will be no junior clinics from December 23 to January 6.
The USTA Fall season is closing with a bang, and our 5.5 Evening / Weekend Ladies Combo Teams are charging forward in an action-packed playoff series! This team, made up of 3.0 and 2.5 players, has put on some thrilling performances.
Our Day team faced off against Walnut Creek on Tuesday, November 12th in a nail-biter match and pulled through with a team victory, earning their spot in the NorCal Sectionals this January!
Huge congratulations to the team, Kate Doerksen, Sara Parr, Jenée Rehrmann, Carla Forgham, Dana Brent, and Kelly Feinstein! Let’s keep the momentum rolling all the way to Sectionals!
The Winter Pickleball League kicked off on November 7th, and the competition is heating up! Running every Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:30 pm, this 10-week league (with match dates continuing December 12, 19, and January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30) is the perfect way to spend winter evenings.
Here’s how it works: your ranking on the ladder depends entirely on your winning percentage, so each week you have the chance to climb up or slide down the ladder based on your performance. It’s a fantastic way to improve your game, stay active, and challenge yourself as you battle for the top spot!
HOT SHOTS – Shine in an Incredible 5.5 USTA
Congratulations to our 5.5 USTA Combo Nights and Weekends team, the "Hot Shots," for an amazing season! The team showcased incredible skill and determination, making it all the way to the final round of playoffs.
In a thrilling and closely contested match against the Fremont team, the Hot Shots left it all on the court, narrowly missing the win. While the result didn’t go our way, the team's grit, camaraderie, and competitive spirit truly made this season one to remember. Great job, Hot Shots! You made Diablo proud!
Whether you’re a seasoned player or just love the thrill of the game, this league is open to everyone. So, grab your paddle and join the Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter competition. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the action—sign up and see where you rank on the ladder!
