A CHEF’S TABLE DINNER, EXCLUSIVELY FOR YOU

As the Director of Membership at Diablo Country Club, I am constantly reminded of how special our community truly is. The sense of pride, and tradition runs deep, and it’s all made possible by members like you. Your support and referrals help us maintain the unique character of our Club, and we want to show our appreciation in a very special way.

That’s why we’re excited to offer a one-of-a-kind Chef’s Table Dinner experience as a token of our gratitude. When you are the primary referrer of a nominee who joins as a Regular Proprietary member, you will receive this exclusive dining event for you and your friends. This isn’t just a meal; it’s a culinary experience designed especially for you.

Imagine sitting down at a beautifully set table, knowing that every dish has been crafted in collaboration with our Executive Chef, Andy Arndt. Together, you will curate a menu tailored to your personal tastes, ensuring every bite reflects your preferences. From the freshest seasonal ingredients to innovative culinary techniques,

this dinner is a true celebration of dining. And to elevate the experience even further, we will pair your favorite wines and beverages to complement each course.

The Chef’s Table Dinner is a celebration of friendship, community, and the shared values that make Diablo Country Club so special. Referrals are the lifeblood of our Club. They are a testament to the pride you take in being a member, and they allow us to continue to grow and thrive together. With each new member, we add fresh perspectives and build upon our legacy, while ensuring that our Club remains the close-knit, vibrant community we all love.

We look forward to welcoming your referrals and to creating this unforgettable experience for you. Thank you for helping us make your Club a place where friendships flourish, and memories are made.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHEF

Welcome to Fall! In the Diablo kitchen, we are excited to incorporate squash and gourds into our seasonal menu. From yellow squash to butternut squash to kabocha squash, you've probably noticed more than a few types of squash at the farmer’s market. In fact, there are over 100 types of squash, categorized into both Summer and Winter varieties. Squash is a great healthy alternative to potatoes—relatively low in carbs, high in fiber, nutrient-dense, and anti-inflammatory. Both Winter and Summer squash are low in calories and fat, and they are excellent sources of vitamin C. They also contain fiber, B vitamins, and important minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Some of the squash I will be focusing on includes delicata, kabocha, butternut, and acorn. We’ll be pairing these

with hearty braised dishes, soups, sauces, and incorporating them into our power bowl salad.

On the sweeter side, Katia is going to work her pastry magic with pumpkins. Pumpkins help improve skin and eye health and support immune function. Katia has been perfecting the following amazing desserts: Marbled Pumpkin Cheesecake, Spicy Pumpkin Cake (GF), Pumpkin Tart, and Pumpkin Tiramisu.

We look forward to seeing you dining in Red Horse to try these amazing October offerings.

MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT

Tré and Tracy Musco and Diablo Celebrate a Milestone with the Marriage of their Daughter Perry to Adam Mayer

The Musco’s relationship with Diablo Country Club began when parents Nick and Nanette joined the Club after moving from Chico to Danville around 1984. Drawn by the tennis program, family orientation, and historic charm of the club, they knew Diablo would be a great fit. The sons enjoyed the Club as teens and have continued to do so uninterrupted to this day. The family believes they have almost 70 years of combined membership.

Given the early July wedding and the extensive remodel of course there were moments of concern about being the first wedding at the "new" Club, but in the end, the Diablo team was fantastic, pulling everything off with grace—even rolling out the new grass lawn just days before the wedding! Along the way, the family received great support from the Diablo team, who worked seamlessly with their wedding planner, Erin Vigil, to bring Perry's vision to life. The Club truly sparkled, and all of the guests raved about the quality of the food and the fantastic service, especially at the martini bar!

The family's enjoyment of the Club started with countless fun times as young adults and more family events than can be counted. After starting a family of their own, Tré and Tracy eventually moved to Diablo and as part of creating their "Diablo experience" they restored one of the neighborhood’s historic homes, which will celebrate its 100th birthday next year. Their four children have celebrated many of their first Christmas and Easter holidays with extended family and friends at Diablo, participating in activities ranging from tennis with their grandfather, to swim team, golf lessons, and enjoying many, many meals at the Club.

Their daughter Perry had always wanted to be married at their home in Diablo, so combining the ceremony and cocktails at their home with the reception and dancing at Diablo was the perfect way to celebrate her and Adam's marriage. For Tracy and her husband Tré, as well as their close family, it was intimate and personal to have their guests celebrate at both their home and their Club, creating something that was both elegant and warm. Given Perry’s lifelong relationship with the Club it felt full circle to see the newlyweds dancing the night away at Diablo.

The Club’s location near their house was ideal for the combined event, and the timing and style of the remodel made Diablo the perfect setting.

The event had a special storybook feel, with friends and family from both the Musco and Mayer sides enjoying each other's company and forming future bonds over the three days of wedding events. A particularly special moment was having all four of Perry's grandparents present to celebrate with her and Adam, which meant the world to them. Other standout moments included the couple's fur babies as the ring bearer and flower girl, her uncle officiating the ceremony with a blend of humor and emotion, the heartfelt toasts by both mothers that captivated the audience, and of course, the party! The elegant venue was packed with dancers ranging in age from 7 to 94, creating an unforgettable evening celebrating a beautiful couple. One of the great advantages of hosting a wedding close to home was the afterparty, and given the record-setting heat, it was no surprise that much of the party ended up in the pool—some still in their tuxes! It was a clear sign that everyone had a great time.

Cheers to more fun events and more memories to be made in the coming years as the family continues to grow. They feel very fortunate that the family began the Diablo relationship 40 years ago and hope to see it continue for another 40!

Meet Ryan: Our New Tennis Coach at Diablo EMPLOYEE

We are thrilled to introduce Ryan Semmelmeyer, a USPTA Certified Professional Coach, to the DCC tennis family. Ryan’s tennis journey began at Moraga Country Club before moving to Danville, where he joined Crow Canyon Country Club. During his time at San Ramon Valley High School, Ryan was a standout athlete, lettering all four years as a varsity tennis player. He further honed his skills by working tennis camps at Crow Canyon, where he began his training as a coach.

Ryan went on to attend California State Chico, where he red-shirted for the basketball team. After college, he returned to Crow Canyon to teach tennis full-time, but soon transitioned into

a successful 18-year career in commercial retail real estate. During COVID, his passion for tennis reignited, and he resumed coaching at Crow Canyon, where he has been for the past four years. More recently, he has also been coaching at Blackhawk Country Club for the last six months.

Ryan has a wealth of experience, having run summer tennis camps, junior clinics and tournaments, adult member tournaments, cardio tennis, adult privates, and clinics, along with various social tennis events. He emphasizes technique and enjoys working with students of all ages and skill levels.

Ryan will be coaching here at the Club Monday through Friday. Please join us in welcoming him and take advantage of his expertise to improve your game!

EVENTS

As we reflect on the past few months at the Club, I am filled with pride and gratitude for both our team and members for the incredible experiences we have shared together. The Summer has been a wonderful blend of cherished traditions and exciting new events that have brought our member community closer than ever.

Our Invitational Gold Putter men’s tournament over Labor Day weekend was a true testament to the spirit of Diablo. It was special to see members come together to celebrate this time-honored tradition while also embracing new elements that elevated the experience for everyone involved.

We hosted the DWGG’s Classic Invitational, which spanned two days of friendly competition and a fun Wild West theme. The energy on the course was palpable, as the ladies showcased their skills and got the opportunity to show off our Club to their guests. Thank you to all who participated and contributed to making this tournament a success!

One of the standout events this season was our Annual Summer Camp Out, which was a resounding success! It was delightful to see so many families enjoying our beautiful greens surrounding the Snack Shack in a unique and memorable way. From rock climbing and inflatable bounce house fun, to stargazing and a movie under the stars, the sense of community was truly special. We love the fact that this event is a cherished tradition and look forward to continuing for years to come.

As we look ahead to the horizon of the holiday season, we have an exciting lineup of events and activities planned for members. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:

∙ Fall Beer Tasting: Almanac Brewery will join us to taste both their signature styles along with seasonal favorites, perfectly paired with fun food stations that will help you get into the Autumn season mood.

∙ Chefs Table: This incredibly intimate dinner will host 16 special guests who will have a truly special experience and quality time with our Executive Chef, Andy Arndt. If you consider yourself a foodie, this will not be one to miss!

∙ Halloween Monster Mash Bash: We hope you will join us for a spooktacular evening filled with fun activities for all ages.

∙ Annual Member Wine Sale: Take advantage of this unique opportunity to stock up on your favorite wines and discover new selections to enjoy during the holidays.

∙ Turkey Trot 5K: This festive run around the course promises to kick off your Thanksgiving celebration on the best foot.

I also want to remind you that the holiday season is the perfect time to host family gatherings, corporate holiday parties, and special celebrations at the Club. We still have a few slots available on our calendar in November and December for holiday events, and we encourage you to inquire today to secure your preferred date. Our dedicated team is here to help make your holiday celebrations unforgettable!

Thank you for being a valued member, your participation and enthusiasm are what make Diablo Country Club a truly special place to gather and celebrate.

FROM THE HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Fall is in the air! That means a couple of things, football is back, and the golf course is in fantastic shape! And of course, who doesn’t love playing golf in a sweater. It is a fantastic time to play golf and work on your game and we are here to help.

September is Diablo Invitational season, and we have had a couple of spectacular events for both the men and women. The Gold Putter started off Labor Day weekend, with 216 players spending four days on property, filled with awesome competition and even better camaraderie. This year, the Gold Putter horserace determined the winner of the whole event, and it carried on until almost nightfall between the teams of Matt Sekera and his guest Ken Illingworth and Mike Fitzsimmons and his guest Andrew Legge. After a tie on the 18TH hole, we went to two extra holes, until the team of Sekera and Illingworth pulled out the victory. With around 400 people out watching, the sounds were loud and exciting.

Following the Gold Putter, we held the Women’s Classic, with 92 women coming out to enjoy the beautiful weather and golf course. Another exciting horserace came down to the final shots on 18, with the team of Karen Burkhart and Patty Chase and their guests Kobi Enochian and Lisa Quinn pulling out the win with a par on the final hole. Not to be outdone, the team of Becky Bates and Jane Omick and their guests Rosemary Reid and Janie Westcott cruised home to the Overall low net win.

How about some tidbits of instruction to go with the Fall golf season! As I watched the end of the PGA Tour season and the Solheim Cup winning team from the United States, I heard a couple of things that caught my attention. The first was the announcer pointing out how Scottie Scheffler checked his grip before every shot he hit this year. This is the number one player in the world, who had one of the greatest PGA Tour seasons ever, and he still checks his grip before every shot! How many times have you checked your grip to make sure it is correct? Second, how hard golf really is, even for those on TV. How many shots did I see go into the water? Into a bunker? Short putts missed? These are the best players in the world, and this still happens. Don’t get down on yourself, golf is hard!

∙ Did you know that a player who is a 15 handicap has an 11% chance of hitting a green in regulation?

∙ Did you know that a player who averages in the 80’s has a 9% chance of making two pars in a row?

∙ Did you know that a player who averages in the 100’s has a 7% chance of making a par?

Golf is hard!

DIABLO CUP

The highly anticipated Diablo Cup festivities kicked off with a Cocktail Party and Team Draft on July 24, where the excitement built as team pairings were decided by the captains. The tournament itself spanned July 25 and 26, featuring three thrilling 9-hole match play format matches.

Modeled after the Solheim Cup, the competition saw two teams battling it out. Team captains, Sara Sanders (Team Watson) and Christine Brensel (Team Smith), who are the lowest-indexed players, lead their teams to victory. This year's event was meticulously planned by Valerie Schooley and Kerry Singleton, ensuring a memorable experience for all participants.

Team Watson raced out to an early 7-3 lead after the front 9 matches. The second nine on Thursday and third match on Friday would be halved at 5 points each, earning Team Watson the Diablo Cup Championship!

CAPTAIN’S TOURNAMENT

The Captain’s Tournament on August 1 and 8 was a special event dedicated to honoring the current Diablo Women’s Golf Group (DWGG) captain, Sia McDonald, as well as past captains. This two-day eclectic-format tournament promised friendly competition and celebration.

For the past several years, DWGG has donated to a non-profit from the registration fees and sponsorship money donated to DWGG for the Classic Invitational. This year, the donation went to the First Tee Tri-Valley. First Tee is a youth development organization that enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with a life skills curriculum, they create active learning experiences that build inner strength, selfconfidence, and resilience that kids can carry to everything they do.

NINERS

Summer days were not slow and lazy for the Niners: First an awesome Beach Party event headed by committee chairs Ashley Thomsen and Jean Canepa. Second an Ice Cream Social, manned by Lynda Mackesey and crew, hosting Blackhawk guests, topped off July with whipped cream, a sundae bar, brownies and calories.

August was our informal guest day combined with a “no sweat donation”, manned by Susan Freeman and Rosanne Ogles, with all of us filling 6 baskets with sweatshirts and sweatpants for the Diablo Assistance League, supporting foster children in transition. An extra special event was the LPGA Pro clinic. Read all about it!

NINERS' LPGA CLINIC A GREAT SUCCESS

The Diablo Niners' Golf Group recently hosted an exclusive LPGA clinic on August 5 and 6, providing women golfers a fantastic opportunity to improve their game. Participants worked with LPGA pros Kim Estep and Julie Day from the Women's School of Golf in San Diego, who shared their 30+ years of teaching expertise.

Kim and Julie’s philosophy of keeping golf simple and fun, while delivering customized professional instruction, resonated with the group. The clinic covered essential aspects of the game, including building confidence, managing strategies from tee to green, and putting with purpose.

With a maximum of 24 participants, the clinic offered 8 hours of professional instruction, handson practice, and on-course coaching. Breakfast and lunch were provided on both days, adding to the overall experience. It was a wonderful event that left all attendees feeling more confident and skilled in their game!

SENIOR GOLF SEASON ROLLS TOWARD EXCITING FINALE

The 2024 Senior Golf Season is winding down, with 17 home and away events already in the books. Only three regular season events and the much-anticipated Pop Smith Senior Invitational, taking place on October 3 and 4, remain. So far, nearly 48 different players have participated, contributing to an exciting and competitive season.

Leading the race for Senior of the Year with 23 or more points are Joe Buenavista, Jim Hillman, Gary Ryness, Ron Bredehoft, Bruce Kroyer, James Pasichuke, Dave Yarnold, Bob Hagerty, Dick Servetnick, and Dean McElroy. Points accumulate through participation, but bonus points are awarded for top finishes in the events. Every shot counts as competitors aim for the top, and with competition comes cash prizes. Top money winners this season include Joe Buenavista, Bruce Kroyer, Ron Bredehoft, Jim Pasichuke, and Jim Hillman, among others.

As we head toward the Pop Smith Senior Invitational, it’s the perfect time to line up your partner for this two-day best ball event, open

to all Diablo members 50 and older. Even if you haven’t played with the Senior Group this year, you can still join in on the fun and competition. With its unique format and a Horserace to finish, this event is often called "Gold Putter Lite," offering a chance for glory before the season wraps up.

The grand finale of the 2024 season will be held on October 16. The top three teams in each flight will earn credit book prizes, and the Senior of the Year will be crowned during a special awards lunch in the Ballroom. All food and beverages are covered by the senior golf fee, so your only cost is the cart fee.

Don’t miss these final opportunities to compete, win, and celebrate what has been a remarkable senior season!

PICKLEBALL WINTER LEAGUE

Grab your paddle and join us every Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, it’s the perfect way to challenge yourself, meet new people, and enjoy the fastestgrowing sport in the country. Our Pickleball Winter League is sure to be a highlight of your week.

Pickleball is a unique blend of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong that’s easy to learn but offers plenty of room for strategy and skill-building.

Each week, you’ll have the chance to test your skills against other members as the league format encourages players to mix and mingle. There’s no better way to unwind after a busy day than by getting on the court, engaging in some healthy competition, and having a great time with fellow members.

MASTERING THE PICKLEBALL SERVE:

Keys to a Successful Start by Marco Sanchez

In pickleball, the serve is one of the most important aspects of the game. A well-executed serve can give you the upper hand right from the start, setting the tone for the rally and putting your opponent on the defensive. While the serve may seem simple, mastering it takes practice and attention to detail. Here are some key tips to help you improve your serve and gain a competitive edge on the pickleball court.

1. Focus on Consistency Over Power

While it’s tempting to go for power, especially when trying to gain a quick advantage, consistency is key in pickleball. The goal of a successful serve is to get the ball into play, and a consistent serve will

allow you to do just that. Focus on making smooth, controlled contact with the ball and developing a rhythm that you can repeat every time. Once you’ve mastered consistency, you can then start adding power and spin to challenge your opponents.

2. Aim for Depth

A deep serve is one of the best ways to keep your opponent on their heels. Aim to land your serve close to the baseline, which forces your opponent to return from a more defensive position. A deep serve limits their ability to control the next shot and can set you up for an easier return. Practice placing your serves in different spots along the baseline to improve your accuracy and keep your opponent guessing.

3. Utilize Spin and Placement

Adding spin to your serve can make it more difficult for your opponent to return. A well-placed spin serve can cause the ball to bounce unpredictably, forcing your opponent to adjust their position and often resulting in a weak return. Practice different types of spin, like topspin or backspin and experiment with your serve placement to create a strategic advantage.

4. Maintain a Balanced Stance

A solid, balanced stance is critical for a consistent and powerful serve. Start with your feet shoulderwidth apart, knees slightly bent, and weight evenly distributed. This stance will help you maintain control and generate power from your legs and core. Avoid over-rotating your body, as this can lead to inaccurate serves. Focus on a smooth, fluid motion from your stance to your contact point.

5. Perfect Your Toss

A consistent toss is essential to delivering a reliable serve. The ball should be tossed at a consistent height, just in front of your body, and in line with your paddle. An erratic toss can throw off your timing and lead to mistakes. Take time to practice your toss until it feels natural and repeatable.

6. Stay Relaxed

Tension in your body can lead to rushed, inaccurate serves. Focus on staying relaxed and maintaining a calm mindset before each serve. Take a deep breath, visualize your serve, and trust your technique. A relaxed approach will lead to more controlled, effective serves.

7. Use the Element of Surprise

Variety is key to keeping your opponent off balance. Don’t rely on the same type of serve every time. Mix up your serves by using different speeds, spins, and placements. This will make it harder for your opponent to anticipate your next move and give you an advantage in the rally.

8. Practice, Practice, Practice

As with any skill in pickleball, the key to mastering your serve is practice. Set aside time in your practice sessions to focus solely on serving. Work on consistency, accuracy, and spin, and challenge yourself to place the ball in different spots on the court. The more you practice, the more confident and effective your serve will become.

By focusing on consistency, accuracy, and variation, you can develop a serve that not only gets the ball in play but also puts pressure on your opponent right from the start. A successful serve is the foundation of a strong pickleball game, so take the time to practice and perfect this critical skill. With dedication and the right approach, you’ll be serving up aces in no time!

WHY BRANDS WITH MINIMAL INGREDIENTS OR WHOLE FOOD-BASED PRODUCTS MATTER

1. Nutritional Integrity: Brands prioritizing minimal ingredients or whole foods often focus on nutrient-dense options. These foods are less processed and retain more natural vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, essential for overall health and well-being.

2. Reduced Additives and Preservatives: Foods with fewer ingredients typically avoid artificial additives, preservatives, and unhealthy chemicals. This reduces the risk of consuming harmful substances that can negatively impact your health over time.

3. Improved Digestion: Whole food-based products are more accessible for your body to digest and process. They often contain natural fibers and nutrients that support healthy digestion and absorption, reducing the likelihood of gastrointestinal issues.

4. Stable Blood Sugar Levels: Foods with minimal or no added sugars and refined carbohydrates help maintain stable blood sugar levels. This is crucial for sustained energy and preventing spikes and crashes affecting your mood and performance.

5. Enhanced Flavor: Whole foods and products with minimal ingredients often have more prosperous, authentic flavors. This is because they rely on the natural taste of the ingredients rather than artificial flavor enhancers.

6. Transparency and Trust: Brands focusing on simple, whole-food ingredients tend to be more transparent about their product contents. These builds trust with consumers, who are increasingly concerned about what goes into their food and how it’s produced.

7. Better for Overall Health: Consuming foods with minimal processing and fewer ingredients supports overall health by reducing exposure to unhealthy fats, excessive sodium, and artificial compounds. It contributes to a balanced diet and can help prevent chronic diseases.

8. Sustainable Choices: Whole-food-based products often come from sustainable farming practices focusing on natural and environmentally friendly methods. Choosing these products can contribute to a more sustainable food system.

9. Allergy and Sensitivity-Friendly: Foods with fewer ingredients make identifying and avoiding allergens or sensitivities easier. This is particularly important for individuals with food allergies or intolerances who must be cautious about hidden ingredients.

10. More Straightforward Labels: Brands with minimal ingredients typically have more basic labels that are easier to understand. This allows consumers to make informed choices quickly and confidently without wading through complex ingredient lists.

WELLNESS CENTER FROM THE

HYDRATE LIKE A PRO WITH ALKALIZED WATER

Did you know that the quality of your water can impact your overall well-being? Shiva’s expertise extends to the benefits of filtered and structured water, mainly through advanced water machines. These machines utilize electrolysis to transform tap water into Alkalized water, which some believe is healthier than regular tap or purified water.

HOW IT WORKS:

∙ Electrolysis: An electrical charge is applied to the water, passing it through an ion exchange system. This process breaks down molecules by mixing positive and negative ions.

∙ pH Balance: The water then flows across metal plates to adjust its pH balance, resulting in a more alkaline state.

WHY ALKALIZED WATER?

∙ Health Benefits: Alkalized water is often praised for its potential health benefits and is used for various purposes, including drinking, cooking, beauty routines, and cleaning.

Consider incorporating this structured, deeply hydrating water into your daily routine for a refreshing boost. Whether you want to enhance hydration or explore new wellness practices, alkaline water could be a great addition to your lifestyle.

Don’t hesitate to contact Shiva so she can guide you to her suggested filtration system. Please note that these are suggestions, not recommendations or prescriptions. If necessary, please always consult your healthcare provider before making any dramatic changes in your diet.

NECESSARY DISCLOSURE REGARDING NUTRITION SUGGESTIONS

Choosing brands focusing on minimal ingredients or whole foods can significantly benefit your health and well-being. These brands provide natural, nutritious, and flavorful options while supporting a transparent and sustainable food system.

A good rule of thumb is to focus your main grocery shopping on the store’s perimeter!

If you have specific questions about brand suggestions, please get in touch with me, Fitness and Wellness Director, Ashley Greene. As a Precision Nutrition Certified Coach, I am happy to offer recommendations based on my professional and personal experiences.

However, please note that I am not a nutritionist or dietitian and cannot prescribe personalized nutrition plans. Before making nutritional adjustments, consult your healthcare provider for any significant dietary changes or specific medical concerns.
