GENERAL MANAGER

Belated Happy New Year and welcome to 2025! Even though we are in a new year, we are already three months into our fiscal year. For the first two months (November and December) of the fiscal year, we are slightly ahead of N.O.I.

Time seems to be flying by during my assignment with Diablo Country Club. By the time this newsletter is published, I will be wrapping up my fourth month at Diablo. Walking through the front doors of a new clubhouse in October of last year, there was a lot to absorb and work to be done. The team has become a cohesive group, working together to set new goals and expectations.

In the first week of January, we welcomed James Osborne as our new Director of Agronomy. James has already demonstrated his commitment, attention to detail, and ability to develop his team. We're also in the process of hiring a new Golf Course Superintendent, and we expect to have this position filled by late February. Although our search for a Director of Membership Sales and Marketing has yet to yield many qualified candidates, our team has been working diligently and generating great leads to welcome new members to the Club. Additionally, our newest managers—Chef Andy Arndt, Andrew Lombard, and Jenn Kane—are approaching their one-year anniversary at Diablo and have been making a significant impact on the Club, helping to elevate our operations and member experience.

At the end of January, the Board of Directors hosted its 2025 Board Retreat. This year, we have invited all key managers to contribute and participate, strengthening their buy-in and ownership of Diablo’s future. On Day 1, the

early sessions featured Club Industry professionals from Club Benchmarking and TCS. Club Benchmarking reviewed Capital Planning, providing valuable insights, especially for the management team, on how the Club is positioned for capital improvements in the coming years and the financial planning involved. TCS provided a summary of their work over the past four months, emphasizing the best practices needed daily. They also highlighted the continued use of financial tools to bolster fiscal responsibility and how each department contributes to the Club’s growth—and, in turn, their own professional development.

On Day 2, we built on the previous day's information and reviewed the Vision, Mission, and Core Values of Diablo Country Club, working together with managers and the Board to ensure alignment. A SWOT analysis led to a candid discussion of where we are and how we need to collaborate moving forward. The department heads outlined their goals and plans for 2025, informing the Board of the support they need to achieve them.

Before we know it, golf season will be upon us. Now is the time to invite your friends to join Diablo Country Club. We have a lot of great things happening—why not enjoy Diablo with your friends?

See you around the Club!

THE FUTURE OF DIABLO

Referrals are the heartbeat of our Club. They ensure that we continue to thrive, evolve, and welcome members who embrace the traditions and values we hold dear. With each new member, we enrich our Club with fresh energy and perspectives, all while preserving the tight-knit, vibrant atmosphere that makes Diablo truly exceptional.

2025: A Year of Elevated Experiences

This year, we’re raising the bar across all aspects of Club life. In just the past two months, we’ve enhanced our dining experiences, introduced specialty menu nights, curated unforgettable Club events, and honed our sports programs to deliver an unmatched member experience. We are committed to making 2025 a year of excellence, and your referrals help shape the future of Diablo.

Now is the perfect time to extend an invitation to those who would make great additions to our community. Your referrals truly make a difference, and we can’t wait to celebrate you at the Chef’s Table.

HISTORY

The Diablo Country Club golf course began in 1915 as a ninehole layout designed by Jack Neville of Pebble Beach fame and built by Carnoustie's John Smith. By 1920, the course was ready to become an eighteen-hole masterpiece, but it wouldn't be easy. Standing in the way, a reliable source of water sufficient to supply both a fast-growing community and the expanding golf course.

William Watson was the most sought-after golf course designer residing in California and was hired to do the Diablo expansion in December of 1920. For Watson, the design work was the easy part. The land he had to work with was some of the best in the entire state. The problem of water requires time, creativity and engineering. The solution included excavating the infield of the former Cook Ranch racetrack, enough to store 25 million gallons of water. The next step, seasonally diverting the East Branch of the Green Valley Creek, across from Diablo road to the reservoir. In 1924, Watson put the finishing touches on the Diablo golf course, while also finishing the designs for the Olympic Club and the Harding Park layouts. The rest was up to Mother Nature.

PAUL & SIA M c DONALD

High school sweethearts Paul and Sia McDonald have deep roots in the Danville area, having started dating as sophomores at Monte Vista High School. Growing up, Sia was captivated by the charm of Diablo’s picturesque streets and dreamed of one day making it her home. That dream became a reality, and today, Paul and Sia are raising their three children—Piper (16), Ben (13), and Will (11)—in the town of Diablo.

Since joining Diablo Country Club in 2015, the McDonald family has made it an integral part of their lives, embracing the club’s community and all it has to offer.

In their search for a club, Paul and Sia were looking for a place that offered a strong sense of community, timeless charm, and a welcoming atmosphere where every member of the family could feel comfortable. Diablo not only met their expectations but quickly became their second home.

The McDonalds have fully embraced everything Diablo has to offer. Piper, Ben, and Will have all been active participants in the Club's swim, golf, and tennis programs. Ben even holds a special family distinction as the only McDonald to achieve a hole-in-one, accomplishing this feat at just 10 years old on hole #16! Paul enjoys his time on the golf course and bocce court, where every

game offers both competition and connection.

When Sia first joined Diablo, she began playing tennis, but by 2021, she discovered a passion for golf. Her love for both tennis and golf, along with pickleball, keeps her schedule full. She is especially honored to serve as Captain of the Diablo Women’s Golf Group (DWGG). Her involvement in the Club’s sports programs has allowed her to connect with many incredible women and has given her the opportunity to forge meaningful friendships that she truly values. Sia feels fortunate to be surrounded by such talented, athletic, smart, and creative women.

The McDonalds deeply appreciate the traditions and events that make Diablo so special. Whether strolling the scenic golf course or enjoying a delicious meal at the Red Horse, they feel fortunate to call Diablo Country Club their home. Excited about Diablo’s continued growth, they look forward to creating even more lasting memories and friendships, confident that they’ve found the perfect place for their family.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHEF

We hope 2025 brings you continued success and prosperity. I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Red Horse, Mt. Diablo Pub, and Court House as we embark on another year of creating memorable experiences in the Clubhouse.

This year, we’re introducing exciting weekly themed nights throughout each month, with menus that celebrate the seasons and showcase flavors from around the world. Some highlights include:

SUNDAY ROAST NIGHT

Inspired by London’s Classic Tradition

A Sunday Roast is a traditional British meal enjoyed on Sundays, often regarded as a hearty and comforting family meal.

DIM SUM NIGHT

Reminiscent of Downtown Los Angeles

Dim Sum translates in Chinese to “Touch of Heart.” We will be featuring a wide selection of regional favorites, served in steamer baskets or on small plates, with house-made Chile crisp and pickled vegetables.

CREOLE NIGHT

For a Taste of Cajun Flair

Creole cuisine is known for its depth of flavor and use of fresh, local ingredients, with a focus on the coastal South and savory spices with aromatic

herbs. We will also be incorporating some memorable cocktails that stay on theme.

MEAT-CENTRIC CHOPHOUSE MENU

For

the Ultimate Indulgence

The Chophouse menu is a decadent and indulgent dining experience tailored for meat lovers, offering premium cuts of meat, expertly prepared sides, and a refined yet hearty atmosphere.

In the Red Horse, look forward to the arrival of the season’s first asparagus, and Californian artichokes will be featured later this month. Citrus fruits are still at their peak, and I’ll be incorporating them into nightly specials to highlight their vibrant flavors.

Katia worked her magic during the holiday season, crafting desserts that I hope many of you had the chance to enjoy. For February, she’s focusing on citrus creations featuring Ruby Grapefruit and Meyer Lemons. In her free time, Katia has also been lending her talent to our bar program, crafting unique elixirs, syrups, and garnishes to elevate our bespoke cocktails—the Diablo way.

We’re excited to share this year’s culinary journey with you. Thank you for your continued support!

Andy

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EVENTS

A Season of Celebration and Connection

As we embark on a new year, the team at Diablo Country Club couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.

Our year started with a bang at the Eras Tour Dance Party on Saturday, January 18. What an empowering, fun & energetic night it was, I adored watching Members and families dance, laugh, and celebrate together.

In February, we’re excited to offer two special events that will emphasize themes of love at Diablo. On Friday, February 14, we’ll host our Sweethearts Dinner, featuring a romantic & indulgent menu curated by Chef Andy. Celebrate with your significant other or enjoy a night out with friends!

Saturday, February 15, we’ll gather for the Galentine’s Wine Social—a special event dedicated to the women of Diablo. This casual yet fun gathering will provide the perfect opportunity to sip wine, unwind, and forge new connections with other women in our community. Celebrating friendship and the incredible bonds that make Diablo Country Club such a special place.

Just added to the Events Calendar for Thursday, February 20, I am thrilled to announce that we will be hosting The Entitled Housewife for a comedy night at the Club. We are so looking forward to this event & know that it will sell out quickly! We can only accommodate 200 seats so register for your tickets ASAP!

As we move into spring, March brings a variety of events to keep the fun going. Ladies Night Cocktails & Karaoke on Thursday, March 6 is all about letting loose and enjoying the simple

pleasure of a fun night out with friends. Come out to sing your heart out or simply show up to cheer on your friends!

Friday, March 7, we’ll host the highly requested Father-Daughter Dance, a most cherished tradition. Fathers and daughters will share a night of dancing, creating dreamy memories that will last a lifetime. We love our Father Daughter Duos but any & all special parent-child duos are encouraged to attend!

Keeping up with the theme of dancing, on Saturday, March 8, we are honored to host a very special Benefit Concert in partnership with Oakland Lacrosse. The concert will feature the incredible Shane Smith & the Saints, who have risen to stardom off the heels of their appearances in the Yellowstone TV series! This evening promises to be a night full of heart, energy, and meaningful impact. This event will raise funds for Oakland Lacrosse, a non-profit dedicated to empowering youth from Oakland’s public schools. It’s a cause that aligns deeply with our values of supporting education, resilience, and community. The evening will be a celebration of music, philanthropy, and the power of coming together for a greater good.

The upcoming months are filled with opportunities for all of us to come together, create lasting memories, and continue the traditions that make Diablo Country Club such a unique and cherished gem. If you have any private event needs, please do not hesitate to reach out!

As always, we look forward to celebrating with each and every one of you this upcoming events season!

GREENS AND GROUNDS

As many of you are aware, the New Year has brought some new additions to the Agronomy Team: myself, James Osborne—Director of Agronomy—and, most notably, my 4-legged assistant, Bentley—aka Chief of Wildlife Control. Bentley and I could not be more excited to be part of the Diablo team, and we look forward to serving all our members. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to say hello and offer some friendly scratches. For anyone we have not yet had the chance to meet, we hope to see you on the golf course very soon.

In my initial days at Diablo, I focused on building relationships throughout the Agronomy department. We have utilized some recent frost delays to get our facility cleaned up and organized. This will ensure that we operate with high efficiency as we move into the spring and summer months.

We are also in the process of interviewing potential Golf Course Superintendent candidates to work alongside me. We expect to complete this process and have a successful candidate on board in the next 4-6 weeks.

I hope some of the information provided here helps everyone better understand the things you may see happening as you enjoy your time at Diablo. We are always open to questions and feedback.

One of the immediate efforts we have made on the agronomic front is to get the Poa Annua under control right away. We have treated all our Bentgrass with a product called PoaCure, which was recently approved for use in the state of California. It is a firstof-its-kind herbicide that will eradicate Poa Annua from Bentgrass surfaces. Additionally, we have a team out walking each fairway and spot treating any Poa breakthrough in our fairways. You may notice all the little blue dots as you make your way

through the course. Lastly, we are using larger ride-on sprayers to tackle areas in the rough that have experienced breakthrough. The last piece of the puzzle will be properly applying a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent any additional Poa Annua from germinating going forward.

We have also been busy ensuring that the depth of sand in our bunkers is set properly, with 4 to 5 inches of sand in the bottoms, and 2 to 3 inches on the faces. In many of the bunkers on the front nine, we had to add new sand. Please keep in mind that these bunkers may be a bit softer in the short term as the new, fluffy sand settles in. We expect to have all the bunkers finished in the next two weeks.

Some of our upcoming efforts will include testing our soil and water source. This information will help us develop a proper fertility program as we move into the remainder of the season. Testing will be ongoing on a quarterly basis to ensure we keep our program properly aligned to provide optimal turf performance day in and day out.

We will also be auditing our irrigation system over the next month. This will alert us to any issues we may have and allow time for repairs before the warm, dry months that are certainly coming our way .We will also be auditing our irrigation system over the next month. This will alert us to any issues we may have and allow time for repairs prior to the warm dry months that are certainly coming our way.

James Osborne

FROM THE HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

It’s the new year, and that means now is the time to start working on your game! I see plenty of you out practicing and playing, but we could always see more. Now is the time to test out new equipment— whether it’s at a demo day, borrowing demo clubs from the Pro Shop, or simply trying a new type of golf ball. Any and all of these things have the potential to lower your scores, along with practice!

The Pro Shop has received demo clubs from TaylorMade, Ping, and Titleist, with Callaway demos on the way. Come in and check out a club to try on the golf course! Our first demo day is February 4th with TaylorMade—email me if you would like to attend. Appointments are available from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Our Professional Staff can also fit you for anything needed in the simulator, so if you’re looking for extra forgiveness and those extra yards off the tee, let us know!

The new Indoor Golf Hitting Simulator is a great place to practice and can be booked online, just like a tee time. There are a couple of ways to work on your game with the simulator, but the easiest and best is to learn your carry distances. When you watch the professionals on television, they

always seem to know exactly how far the golf ball carries. Now you can too! Hit ten to fifteen balls with each club and track how far the ball goes in the air. Some may be surprised at how short it travels, while others may realize it goes farther. Either way, knowing your carry distances will help you when hitting your next shot to the green!

How many of you have practiced putting in the last week, month, or even year? This is the easiest way to start cutting strokes off those high scores. Just think—if we eliminate four putts per round, that could mean breaking into the 90s for the first time, shooting in the 80s, or even breaking 80. I recommend coming out to our practice green and going back and forth between the longest two holes to dial in your speed. If you can get that first putt inside two feet, who knows—maybe your group will even give it to you!

If you’re still struggling and need another set of eyes, the Golf Staff is here to help with fittings, lessons, or even just a quick five-minute fix!

Remember, golf is hard!

SHARKS SWIM TEAM — 2025 SEASON

Season Details

Sharks season begins on April 28 and runs through the first weekend of August, with the possibility of extending for swimmers who qualify for the County Meet. Practices are held Monday through Friday. Dual meets take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while Invitational and Championship meets are scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays.

Swim Clinics

To help swimmers prepare for the season, we offer swim clinics in March and April. These clinics run Monday through Thursday and are a great way for swimmers to get into the rhythm of swim practice. They focus on essential skills, drills, and techniques for all strokes and racing components. It’s a perfect opportunity to refresh and build confidence before the season begins!

Private Lessons

We also offer private lessons, available one at a time, each lasting 20 minutes. These personalized sessions are ideal for swimmers who want to focus on specific skills or techniques.

Swimmer Requirements

To join the team, swimmers should be able to swim at least one lap (25 yards) of the pool using any stroke, unassisted. From there, we’ll help them develop and improve their skills throughout the season.

A Fun Community

Sharks are more than just a swim team—it’s a closeknit community where parents and swimmers cheer each other on and build lasting friendships. We encourage families to get involved and participate in the fun!

Parent Volunteer Requirements

As part of the Sharks team experience, parents are asked to volunteer during the season. Volunteer jobs are simple and flexible, including tasks such as checking in swimmers, timing races, shepherding swimmers, and announcing events. For those with more experience, there are opportunities to serve as starters for meets or perform stroke-and-turn duties. We will match you with a volunteer role that fits your comfort level.

WELLNESS CENTER FROM THE

A FOND FAREWELL TO DIABLO COUNTRY CLUB

Four years ago, I walked through the doors of Diablo Country Club, excited to embark on a journey that would become one of the most meaningful chapters of my life. Little did I know then how much this community would feel like family, how many cherished memories we would create together, and how deeply I would grow, personally and professionally, in my time here.

With a bittersweet heart, I share the news of my upcoming departure from Diablo as I prepare to start a new chapter of life in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Leaving California, the place I've called home my entire life is no small decision, but it feels like the right time to embrace new opportunities and challenges.

Reflecting on these past four years, I am grateful for every experience at Diablo Country Club. From designing spaces that bring people together to fostering wellness and fitness programs tailored to the unique needs of our members, every moment has been an opportunity to make a positive impact. The relationships I've built with the incredible members and staff here have been the highlight of my time, and I will always carry those connections with me.

Diablo has taught me so much about the power of community, resilience, and the importance of striving for excellence. These lessons will guide me as I embrace the next phase of my life in Fort Lauderdale. While I am excited about the adventures ahead, I will miss the vibrant energy and the sense of belonging that only a place like Diablo can offer.

Thank you to everyone who has made my journey here so special. I look forward to staying in touch, hearing about this fantastic community's continued growth, and sharing how I'll apply what I've learned here to my new path.

With a full heart and immense gratitude,
