DIABLO COUNTRY CLUB?
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
We're not named Diablo because we can see it, rather, because we owned it!
Our place in Mt. Diablo history began in 1873, when The Associates Collis Huntington, Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, and Mark Hopkins acquired their first parcels in and around today's clubhouse and golf course. The northern slope of the mountain was a known source of coal, to feed the mighty engines of the Central Pacific Railroad. The western slope held promise as a grand country estate, becoming known locally as the Railroad Ranch. David Colton joined The Associates in 1874 and by 1877 purchased the Railroad Ranch from his partners. His heirs, Dan Cook, Seth Cook and Louise Cook Boyd, added over two thousand acres to the size of the estate by purchasing adjacent ranches.
Robert Noble Burgess purchased the estate in 1912, and by 1914, acquired the entire western slope of Mt. Diablo, from the valley floor to the peak, including the summit. Over 10,000 acres, when standing at our first tee today, gaze to the summit for a moment to ponder, that the estate included everything the eye can see. The same year, Burgess built the road to the summit, launched Mt. Diablo Estates for home sites, and Mt. Diablo Park Club for golf, tennis, and club life. The mountain was the center of club activity, providing roads for auto touring, a range for livestock grazing, pastures for dairy cows, a perfect location for our golf course and a lake for both recreation and irrigation. Diablo's Frank Leach was named "Naturalist” and cared for the well-being of the mountain for the rest of his life.
By 1919, Burgess' dream was fulfilled, but the aftermath of the Great War changed his fortunes. Title to the club's mountain property transferred to fellow member Walter Frick. All the while, the

idea of creating a Mt. Diablo State Park filled the air. Through cooperation between the club, local interest groups and the State Legislature, the dream soon became a reality.
On Sunday morning, June 19TH, 1921, hundreds arrived in the 81 automobiles that assembled around the clubhouse. Hundreds more arrived on the Diablo Line by electric train. 11:00 sharp, music by the Martinez band kicked off the formal dedication ceremony. Over 700 members and guests gathered at the club's amphitheater, the slope between our tennis courts and pool complex. The Martinez Choral Society sang, politicians pontificated, and the crowd cheered. A tasty basket lunch provided by the club, and Mt. Diablo was now an officially dedicated park. Over 500 of the attendees made their ascent to
the summit for a second ceremony, and the iconic group mountaintop photo.
The day was organized by a group named Mt. Diablo Parlor. After the festivities, they shared thanks for the support from the people of Danville, the committees, the band, and chorus and even to the District Attorney for the "speed cops" who policed the grounds and boulevard. In a fitting tribute, they shared, "to the members of the Diablo Country Club they are especially grateful".
Since 1873, no-one has cared more for our namesake mountain than Diablo Country Club. As a fitting reward, Diablo Country Club now enjoys a world-class backyard view.

DICK & GAIL BREITWIESER
Within our hometown of Diablo, there exists a couple whose journey embodies the true spirit of community, dedication, and service. Meet Dick & Gail Breitwieser, whose remarkable story spans over six decades and is intertwined with the very fabric of our town and country club.
Over 35 years ago, Dick & Gail made Diablo their home. Dick's connection to Diablo dates back even further, to his days as a young attorney in the 1960s, where he frequented our town. His service to the nation as a Navy man and later as the National Director for the Navy League underscored his commitment to duty and community.
In 1967, Dick assumed the role of head of the Diablo Public Utilities District, later known as the Diablo Community Service District. His leadership ensured the upkeep of our town's vital infrastructure and the staffing of sheriffs for our safety. His tireless efforts were recognized when he was named Citizen of the Year, and upon his retirement, the Dick Breitwieser bridge was dedicated in his honor—a lasting tribute to his service.
Their commitment to community extended beyond public service as they joined Diablo Country Club in 1976. Dick & Gail immersed themselves in various committees, golf groups, and social events, enriching the club's vibrant atmosphere. Dick's exemplary dedication earned him the esteemed Helfrich Award, a testament to his selfless contributions to club service. Yet, amid all their achievements, Dick & Gail hold dear the memories created at Diablo Country Club. From elegant dinner dances to festive New Year's Eve parties, their presence has graced our club with warmth and joy.
It is with great pride and gratitude that we recognize Dick & Gail Breitwieser as Honorary Diablo Country Club members. Their enduring legacy of service, commitment, and camaraderie will continue to inspire us for generations to come.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT WELCOME BACK ANDY ARNDT ASHLEY GREENE
DIABLO COUNTRY CLUB WELCOMES ANDY ARNDT AS THE NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF
We are thrilled to announce the arrival of Andy Arndt as the newest addition to our Club's team, serving as our Executive Chef. Andy brings with him a wealth of experience and a passion for culinary excellence that we are confident will elevate our dining experience to new heights.
Andy holds a Degree in Culinary Arts from the prestigious California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, where he honed his skills and developed a deep appreciation for the art of cooking. His professional journey includes notable stints at renowned establishments such as Boulevard in the Bay Area, where he showcased his talent and dedication to the craft.
During his time in the Bay Area, Andy not only cultivated his culinary expertise but also found love. He met his wife, a native of the area, during his tenure at Boulevard, creating cherished memories that tie him closely to this community.
After living and working on both the West and East coasts, Andy is excited to return to the Bay Area and contribute his culinary vision to our Club. When he's not busy in the kitchen, Andy finds solace in the ocean waves, having been an avid surfer since childhood. Although he'll be adjusting to the colder waters of Northern California after years of surfing at Newport Beach, Andy sees it as an exciting new challenge.
At Diablo, Andy's primary focus will be on elevating the quality and consistency of our culinary program, aiming to create unforgettable dining experiences for our members. With his innovative approach and commitment to excellence, we are confident that Andy will bring exciting and thoughtful cuisine to our Country Club.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Andy as he becomes an integral part of the Diablo family. We look forward to the culinary journey ahead under his leadership.
DIABLO COUNTRY CLUB WELCOMES BACK ASHLEY GREENE AS THE DIRECTOR OF WELLNESS AND FITNESS
Ashley Greene was featured in Winter 2024 NCGA Golf Magazine. Check out Ashley’s tips below for enhancing your golf game during the offseason at the Club.
Off-Season Optimization: Enhancing Your Golf Game with Winter Workouts
As a golf fitness performance coach, I often remind my clients that injury prevention is the key to longevity in golf. This is especially true for recreational golfers who might jump straight onto the green without proper preparation, leading to common issues like lower back pain, tendinitis, and joint discomfort.
As part of a well-rounded workout routine, we need to remember the pivotal role of core stability and balance. A strong core is the foundation for generating power and maintaining balance throughout your swing.
PLANKS
The plank is a versatile exercise that can be modified to fit any fitness level. Side planks are also beneficial for targeting the obliques, which are crucial for rotational strength in golf.
PALLOF PRESS & HOLD
The Long Band Pallof Press & Hold is an excellent exercise for core stabilization and strengthening, mainly targeting the obliques and deep abdominal muscles.
SINGLE-LEG BALANCE RDL
The Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift (RDL) is an excellent exercise for improving balance, coordination and strength in the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back.
Utilizing these three exercises during the off-season can dramatically improve your performance on the course.

ANNOUNCEMENTS GOLF FROM THE HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL
"To succeed in sport, you must make the most of what you have that day. You will never have 100%. Stop panicking when things feel off and win with what you have."
BRETT McCABE, PhD SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST
There are no truer words for golfers than what is above. How many times do we warm up and not feel our best? How many times do we not even have a chance to warm up, yet we find ourselves standing on the first tee trying to fit it in between the out of bounds? Lastly, how many times are we playing decent and then lose it for a bit? This last one is where we need to not try to get it back but work with what we have! Struggling to chip the ball anywhere near the hole? Take a putter or hybrid/fairway wood out and bounce the ball up to the hole. Make the game easier when you are struggling. Aim for the front, middle, of the green or take less club off the tee to find the fairway. Make the game easier!
Now for those that have been playing great golf around the Club the last couple of weeks! Congratulations to Debrah Wilson’s net 65, making her the overall champion of the DWGG Spring Fling, with Judy Morgan scoring net 67 to come in second. On the men’s side, great playing by the team of Ed Holmquist, Zack Siegel, Mario De Tomasi, and Chad Viggiano, who scored a two-day total of 38 under par to win by 4 shots. The team of Michael Stedman, Lance Cottrill, David Tancreto,
and John Salamida won the horse race with four great shots on 18 to make birdie and win! And we can’t forget the kids! The April Parent/ Junior Scramble was won by the team of Kevin and Luke Anderson and Chris and Addyson Chatto, great playing to everyone!
With so much new technology out in 2024, it is the Golf Staff’s job to help decipher it for you; with demo days, demo clubs, and just overall knowledge of what is out! We have a Demo Day with Ping on May 21ST at Watson’s Vista, this is a perfect day to come out and try the new gear. With new golf balls on the market, this is a great opportunity to try something new. Come in and talk about what golf balls are perfect for you and what you need to elevate your game!
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Club, playing great golf, and enjoying the Club!

FORMAL GUEST DAY
Formal DWGG Guest Day was a delightful event, especially with the perfect weather on April 11TH! Kudos to Co-captain Lindsay Walker for her efforts in planning a tournament that struck the right balance between friendliness and competitiveness. Events like these not only showcase the club's hospitality but also provide an opportunity for golfers from all over the Bay Area to come together, enjoy a round of golf, and forge new connections. And of course, a lovely lunch to cap off the day must have been the perfect way to unwind and socialize after a day on the course on April bluebird day.

SPRING FLING TOURNAMENT
Forty golfers participated in DWGG’s two-day handicap tournament on April 25TH and May 2ND Players received 100% of their course handicap and competed for low net in one or both days of the tournament. For those who played both days, their lower net score was used for the competition. Event planners extraordinaire, Katie Alworth and Bobbie Valladon, thought of every detail. The Snack Shack was decorated with gorgeous flower arrangements, the food was wonderful and the custom engraved trophy that doubles as a charcuterie board was the pièce de résistance.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES GOLF
It seems like the senior golf season for Diablo is off to a competitive start! It's impressive that despite the weekly downpours, there haven't been any rainouts. The results from the events at Richmond, Contra Costa, and Blackhawk showcase the skill and dedication of the Diablo senior golfers.
SENIOR KICK OFF
At the kickoff event on March 20TH, our winning foursome was Brad Omick, Terrence Coleman, Bill Bishop, and Jim Clark
RICHMOND
Prize winners who took home the big money in the opening event on April 11TH were James Green and Tom Terrill. Tom had to shoot an even par 72 to push his group into third place for flight one. Tough competition. Flight two produced no winners. Bob Hagerty managed a closest to the pin shot to 11 feet 5 inches.
CONTRA COSTA
Pierce
The men from Diablo had notable performances at Contra Costa on April 24TH. In flight one Mike Barenberg placed first, Bruce Kroyer and Tom Terrill second, and Joe Buenavista third. In flight two Johnathan Hackman came in first, Jim Hillman and James Pasichuke third. In flight three Tom Bard and Bob Hagerty placed first, and Cecil Dunlap second. Winning shop credits at Contra Costa must have been a significant achievement, especially considering the tough competition.
BLACKHAWK
SENIOR INTERCLUB HAPPENINGS Gary Ryness
Our winning ways continued with a strong showing on May 1ST. In the two flights hosted by the Blackhawk Senior Men’s Association on the Lakeside course, Diablo had 7 prize winners in the six possible contests. In flight one Mark Pierce earned a first, Joe Buenavista a second, and Gary Ryness a third (no thanks to his north of 100 score). In flight two Jim Pasichuke won
first, Bob Hagerty second, and Tim Pauling and Bill Freeman, third. Blackhawk played tough on May 1ST with lightning-fast greens and diabolical pin placements. Despite the challenging course conditions, Steve Headen won the closest to the pin prize on hole 12 with a shot to 10 feet 4 inches and Tony Abramo (2023’s Pop Smith Senior Invitational winner) placed a shot on 16 to within 9 feet 5 inches.
HOME
On June 25TH we will have a home event with players from Contra Costa, Orinda, and Crow Canyon coming to play our wonderful course and experience the dramatic and newly refurbished Clubhouse.
With 200 Diablo Seniors (50 and up) qualifying to compete with us, we would love to see more of you. 40 seniors are already participating this season, there's certainly room for more to join in the fun. Two things will happen, number one you will have a great day meeting people from other clubs and the second thing is you will come home from away events saying, “boy am I glad I am a Diablo member.”
It's not just about the competition; it's about the camaraderie and the shared love for the game. Sounds like Diablo Seniors have a winning formula!

GREENS & GROUNDS
Spring is quickly turning into summer as the weather only gets better. We have had a string of beautiful days leading to some great golf for everyone at Diablo!
The Greens department has been preparing the landscaping at the Clubhouse which includes shrub plantings around the bocce courts and tennis facility. On the eastern side, members will have a new Event Lawn and several specimen trees are being planted at the northern end to balance the landscape pallet.
We top-dressed fairways on holes 1-9, which will be a more common practice of going light on the fairways more frequently. However, we did top-dress heavier on #5 fairway for two reasons, one was to fill in the drain lines over time and the second was to build up more sand, so it is drier in the winter. #5 fairway sits in the shade for several months during the winter, so whatever we can contribute to drying it out will help.
Santa Ana seed heads (and stalks) are what have been causing the brown tinge in the fairways. Their seeding season is winding down now so we should start seeing less. We have a much better plan of attack for next year, so self-improvement will yield better results.
By the time you read this, the aerification has wrapped up. Our department did a few things differently than in the past. First off, we pulled a core on the greens to manage the thatch or mat layer. If this layer gets out of control, the greens become soft and not as smooth as we expect, so physically removing the thatch layer prevents that in conjunction with a health nutrient and biological program. Secondly, we pulled cores in the fairways as well. Bermuda is an aggressive thatch producer, so the same principle applies. We top dressed first, pulled a core then drug and smoothed out the fairway. The surface of the fairways will really improve in the near future with proper aerification and light topdressings throughout the season.
Fairways are growing well with the weather, and greens are only having a small core pulled, so I expect recover time to be pretty good. Thank you for your patience. We will see the benefits down the line.

TENNIS & PICKLEBALL
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
As we gear up for an exciting summer at Diablo Country Club, I'm thrilled to share some of the fantastic events and programs we have planned for you.
Thank you to all the members who came out to celebrate our Tres de Mayo Tennis and Pickleball Social on May 3RD. It was a festive evening of tennis to celebrate the annual holiday! It was a great chance for members to enjoy friendly competition on the courts followed by delicious refreshments, authentic Mexican cuisine, and socializing.
Now, let's dive into what's in store for this summer: The Annual Ladies Member/Member Tennis Club Championships with the Caddy Shack theme was a blast! What a creative way to infuse some fun and camaraderie into the competition.
20
It was a joyous occasion to see dedicated members come together to showcase their tennis skills while embracing the playful spirit of the theme.
