Hackley baseball keeps climbing the Ivy League evanweisberg

Sports Editor Going into the 2011-2012 season, the Hackley varsity baseball team knew that in order to achieve success, there would be a long road ahead of them. Replacing seniors such as Conor McDermott, Chandler Keller, and Peter Barrett would not be an easy task for the young baseball squad. “Losing, Conor, our best hitter, was a pretty big loss,â€? senior captain David Dronzek said. Last season was tough for the team, as they went through streaks where they struggled to score runs. “What I was most worried about last year was our hitting,â€? David said. “We were a pretty small team last year size wise, but with that being said we knew we needed to work on our hitting to have a chance at winning a bunch of ball games.â€? But without pitching a team can’t win, and luckily for the Hackley team, pitching is one of their strong suits. “Our pitching has a lot more depth this year,â€? Head Coach Steve Frolo said. “When our pitchers throw strikes and don’t try to overthrow, we can play with most teams in our league,â€? Coach Frolo said. And recently the team has been pitching well, but the team’s Ă€HOGLQJ KDV JRWWHQ LQ WKH ZD\ RI WKHLU VXFFHVV ´,I ZH FDQ Ă€[ VRPH NLQNV ZH FDQ WXUQ WKH EORZQ JDPHV LQWR YLFWRULHV Âľ

Two of the team’s losses include Poly Prep and Fieldston, the best teams in the Ivy League. One win, though, will have interesting implications for later in the season. With the Spring Sting on May 12 against Riverdale, the Riverdale baseball team made the drive to DelMoro Field for a preview. And Hackley did not disappoint. Hackley won a close game 4-3 on sophoPRUH -RKQ :DKUKDIWLJ¡V Ă€UVW hit with the team. “With a few more timely hits it would have been a 10-3 game,â€?

senior Shane Weisberg said. Now Riverdale will likely want vengeance. “I am sure they will be coming up to DelMoro Field looking for revenge,â€? Coach Frolo said. This Spring Sting game is important for the team, which will be playing the game in honor of the late lower school GLUHFWRU 5RQ 'HO0RUR %HIRUH WKH 6SULQJ 6WLQJ JDPH WKH Ă€HOG will be dedicated to Mr. DelMoro. But the players want to win this game for another reason too. “It would show people that baseball at Hackley is still strong,â€? David said. “A win at the Spring Sting would make our fans and coaches proud.â€?

The number of days the softball team had over spring break to improve their skills in New York. The year all of the team’s junior players will graduate. The softball team has gone through its fair share of JURZLQJ SDLQV WKLV \HDU 7KLV ZDV WR EH H[SHFWHG GXH WR WKH loss of some key seniors from last year, the lack of depth of the team, and the lack of veteran players. Head coach Larry Giustiniani acknowledged coming into the year that the team was “in a rebuilding period and that their “goal [was] improving this year. After his second year of coaching the team, Coach Giustiniani decided to cancel the team’s annual trip to Florida in the hopes of cutting down on the distractions and focusing on improving players’ skills. This decision came with its share

Some players believe that a trip to Florida would have been more productive for the team. “I think the trip to Florida would have generated a larger following than the practices at Hackley and thus would have been more effective practices,â€? Veteran boys’ lacrosse team strives for state title allymueller

feature editor Last year, the boys’ lacrosse team came up one win and three goals short from winning the NYSAIS championship after losing to Poly Prep 11-9.
