Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about.

Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes
Everything comes to a standstill as the sun goes down in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.
Costa Rica Calls Traveling is one of my greatest pleasures. I am not a big fan of really long plane rides, but I love getting off the plane in a place I have never been before. I can still remember the first time I visited San Francisco, the smell of the air as we came out of the airport, smelled like flowers. In February, my husband and I left for Honduras and Costa Rica for a 3 week vacation. This was the longest vacation we had taken as a couple. YIkes! Flying into San Pedro Sula in in Honduras is interesting, we spent the first night in a hotel close to the airport, that felt like a concentration camp.
San Pedro Sula is a dangerous city, so hotels are very secure and patrolled, so they have guards with guns and big fences. Bus Ride
We took the bus into Trujillo the next morning which took about 7 hours. And what a bus ride it was. This bus driver drove that bus like he was driving a race car, passing cars, other buses, scooters, so close, I thought for sure someone would be run over. Just imagine a bus with all the windows open (air conditioning provided they said) with the curtains being sucked out the windows barrelling down a highway filled with huge potholes. Fun!
Celebrating baby boomer women • Interactive eMagazine • 5
It was a fun experience, but we would recommend the Christina bus line, which actually has air conditioning. It is a little more expensive but more comfortable with less stops. Although I did enjoy the food vendors bringing fruit and snacks to the windows on the first bus down to Trujillo, the ride in the Christina bus line was much more comfortable. Trujillo
Trujillo is on the northern Caribbean coast of the Honduran department of Colón along the coast. It was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1525. Trujillo is very cute colonial town, that is trying to draw tourists, and now is a stopping point for Cruise Ships. We spent a week in Trujillo resting and getting re-acquainted with people we had met on our previous trips The Honduran people are lovely, but the country is still very behind. No garbage pickup is available in some areas, so trash is thrown all over the road sides and the smell of burning garbage is everywhere. This is of course offset by the beautiful beaches and sunsets.
Trujillo, Honduras was founded by spanish conquistadors in 1525.
Nature
Then we headed to Costa Rica, flying into San Jose, we were picked up by our friends and spent a few days at their home. We stayed in the quaint cabin that looked over the valley. I felt like we were camping, the air was fresh and nature was entertaining us all night long. With the local dogs barking all night, birds screeching and the unknown sounds, I would lay awake listening until I finally fell asleep. With no curtains drawn on the cabin, the sun nudged us awake very early, which is great because the sun goes down early too. I don’t think I have gone to bed that early since I was a little girl. Our friends took us to a really pretty place close to their home called Los Chorros.
A late afternoon photo looking over the valley in Chilamate, Costa Rica.
6 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April • 2017
Los Chorros is about a 15 minute walk once you park, but it was worth it once we saw the waterfall and bubbling river. We relaxed, enjoyed lunch and met some fellow Canadians that were planning on living in Costa Rica. It cost us $6 each to enjoy the afternoon, cheaper if you are a resident. We decided to rent a car to take us to on our next leg of the journey, which is another story to tell. We took the ferry from Puntarenas and drove to Tambor once we got to the other side on roads that were better suited for ATV’s. We stayed in Tambor for one night, then headed to Santa Teresa, about 45 minutes down the bumpy road. Santa Teresa We spent an afternoon at the Los
Santa Teresa has some of the best surfing Chorros waterfalls in Costa Rica with in the world, and I think we heard almost our friends and their neighbours. every accent you could hear. This is a town of surfing, yoga and food and a lot of young people from everywhere are working and traveling here. Adventure
If you’re looking for adventure, there are Canopy tours and be sure to take a day trip to Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, 5 kilometers away. As the country’s first protected area, this park covers over 1,270 hectares of mixed forest filled with 150 species of birds. In fact, this tip of the peninsula is an important seabird sanctuary. We stayed at a hotel called Franks Place. Really, we did, I was worried at first. What is a place called Franks place going to be like? There are no big name hotels here, and Franks was pretty decent. Our room was clean, secure and it included a nice breakfast. We were minutes from the beach, and the pool at the hotel was pretty nice during the heat of the day.
Enjoying the great beach at Banana Beach in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.
Celebrating baby boomer women • Interactive eMagazine • 7
At sunset the people head to the beach to watch the most amazing sunset I have ever seen. Everyone just stops, sits down and watches. One night as we were watching the sunset 4 beautiful horses ran down the beach. OMG! It was magical. The next morning I headed to a yoga class that was at one of the hotels on the beach. There was yoga classes available everywhere. They had a big cabana with curtains looking out over the water. The yoga instructor spoke in English and in Spanish, which made it easy to follow. The 2 hours went by quickly and I think it was one of the best classes I had been at. The crashing of waves, and the cool breeze blowing through were incredible . I would love to start every day this way. Banana Beach
I found a Facebook page called “What’s happening Santa Teresa”, which gives people and businesses a place to promote events or needs, like rides or accommodations. It was here I saw that Banana Beach was having an open stage for musicians. Music + cocktails + beach = happy Dianna On the Friday night we headed to Banana Beach, a really cool hotel on the beach. The atmosphere was relaxed with hammocks, comfy chairs and a delicious menu of cocktails and food.
Mar y Sol Ecotel is in Tambor, Costa Rica.
They had a jam session going and musicians showed up as the evening went on. Hot Tamale
Did I say it was hot, well it was, 110 plus every day. Afternoons were for swimming or snoozing or drinking cold beer. After a few days in Santa Teresa we headed back up to Tambor. We were invited to spend some time with some Canadians who had a vacation home in one of the developments around Tambor and it soon turned into a pool party, attracting other Canadians staying at local hotels. We stayed all afternoon in the pool with me getting way too much sun. That evening we stayed at a wonderful hotel called Mar y Sol Ecotel, just a short walk to a private beach, tucked just off the main road in Tambor.
Pool party at Shelly and Doug’s in Tambor.
Holly, one of the owners, took one look at me and offered me was a bottle of Aloe Aftersun. Very thoughtful and much needed.

The rooms were so cute with gorgeous paintings on the walls done by a local artist. Chef Everett cooked us a delicious pizza in a outdoor pizza oven. I would stay here again for sure. They even run yoga classes a few times a week. After a good night’s sleep we drove back to catch the ferry, and spent a few more days with our friends before coming home. I love to travel but I always look forward to coming home. But this trip to Costa Rica felt different, I felt sad to leave. It felt like we were leaving home, to go home. It probably had something to do with all the people we have met and spent time with.
Costa Rica is clean, safe and the people are really sweet. Like any place including your own city, you need to be smart. Watch your stuff, and don’t wander down any dark streets or beaches. The prices in Costa Rica have gone up over the years since we first visited, but you can still have an affordable vacation here. Around Tambor there are several hotels that will give you a luxury hotel experience if that is what you after. We will be back CR, you can count on it. Tea with Sue Paulson
You are the music– The music is you© “You and I have a choice. Either we lament all the high notes we can’t or won’t hit, or we leave those to Pavarotti and get on with the rest of our song.” Rosita Perez from her book, The Music is You In 1983, a pretty woman with a guitar and a flower in her hair graced the stage of a Calgary conference room. Rosita Perez spoke from the heart about the importance of living our lives and singing our songs. Then she sang her songs. It was a pivotal time in my life. Her words and music resonated bone deep. Today as I reflect about music in my life, I can still hear my grandpa whistling on his way to the barn. My Grammy Ed used to sing as she did her housework. The family piano traveled from Edmonton to Regina and back again. Whichever family had kids who wanted piano lessons got the family piano. I was a reluctant student – at least as far as practicing, so the piano didn’t stay with us long.
Although I don’t ever remember my mother singing, her sister told me she sang, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” live on the radio when in her 20s. Before his teens, my older brother had a beautiful soprano voice. With my other Grandpa a Welsh Tenor, there was definitely musical talent in our family – except for me (or so I believed back then). Oh, I could carry a tune and I certainly loved music. Bigger Role
As a young teenager, I listened for hours to the light classical music on the Reader’s Digest collection of records I had ordered. When I hear one of those pieces today, I still remember all the notes. So yes, music has played a big role in my life. Much to my delight, it’s starting to play an even bigger role as I explore a long hidden talent. Last Christmas I gave myself an electronic keyboard.
10 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April • 2017
It was because of the musical notes and the words that kept entering my brain and refusing to leave until I captured them somehow. Not much of a pianist, I find myself plunking away at the keys as I jot down the letter of each note. Since I don’t read music very well either, I have created my own system to learn to play the melody and sing along with the words that come. When someone talks about a musician being self-taught, I can certainly relate! Along with the playing, I have started using my singing voice again. Singing lessons a while ago strengthened my range to high soprano. I found my voice, so why not sing? What delight I now take in creating and voicing my musical messages! I think of the rhythmic beating of my heart and know that is where the music resides – not just in me – but in all of us. We are encouraged to “make a joyful noise”. Will you join me? walking my dog in the park.
My clients have told me how helpful this is because often times I can see men who would be a good fit they might have passed over.
I remember the smell of the earth and the crispness in the air.
Recently I was working with a client who happened to live in my area and as we were scrolling through pictures of men, I noticed a familiar face. This man had contacted me over 10 years ago using the same picture. I recall giving him a name…. “KFC Man.” To this day, I remember exactly where I was and why I gave him this tagline. We were talking on the phone while I was
It was fall and the leaves on the trees were gorgeous shades of gold, orange and red.
And I remember “KFC Man” jabbering away about how he didn’t care what a woman looked like as long as her body was fit and toned. As I’m listening to this, I’m thinking, “Is this guy for real? Does he think this alone will make him happy?” I was mad that someone could be this narrow minded so when he asked about my body type, I told him my aide wheeled me up to the ‘KFC’ counter every day for my daily dose of fried chicken.

You’re attracted to your type because he feels good to you, as he should because you’ve lived with this type of man your whole life. None of this was true but I could tell my words shocked him because for a full minute he went silent until I finally said, “Just kidding.” 10 years later, there he was…. back online-probably because no one could meet his stringent expectations of what would make him happy. By the way, I know how frustrating it can be to go back on a dating site after a relationship has ended and see the same guys with the same profile and pictures that you saw posted years ago. It makes you start thinking there are no good guys even out there to even date. Ok….I gotta fill you in here. There are a lot of really good guys on every dating site but right now, you probably can’t see them. That’s because like the ‘KFC man’, you probably have a type of man you think will make you happy. And like most women I speak with, chances are you’re type isn’t interested in you online. But the guys who aren’t your type write to you like it was their job, right? Here’s something to think about. If your type had worked in the past, wouldn’t you be with him now? You’re attracted to your type because he feels good to you, as he should because
you’ve lived with this type of man your whole life. He may have had a different job or different clothes but basically, you’ve been dating the same type of guy over and over again with the same disastrous results. The question is…how do you get out of this pattern? You do what I call ‘Out of the Box’ Dating. You try dating different types of men. At first, this will take you way out of your comfort zone, so you’ll want to start slowly by changing one quality you usually look for in a man; maybe someone who has a different type of job, lives a bit further from you or is a little bit older or younger than your usual type. By doing this, you open up the doors to good men who could be a better fit for you and who want to truly make you happy in a long-term relationship. Check out new dating sites as well so you don’t see the same guys you saw 5 years ago. Give it a try and let me know how this dating tool is working for you. Rhea March:
Rhea March, poses with some of the emerging artists she mentors at a local Folk Festival.
Mentoring emerging artists to reach their full potential What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? I’m looking forward to doing things that bring a genuine sense of peace and purpose. In particular, I love to teach and mentor musical youth and help them find their own authentic confidence. My life has always been about contributing to the creation of a strong, supportive arts community and I will continue to do that for as long as I’m able. How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? Nearly four years ago my unconditional best friend Glenn succumbed to mental
illness and took his life by jumping from the high level bridge. My life shattered into a million tortured pieces of deep grief and sorrow. For 22 years he had been my rock, my sounding board and the one person in this world who knew me better than I knew myself. Who was I without him? Who was I at all? I owe my life to Ophelia Leon of the Support Network in Edmonton. She helped guide me through the black abyss of suicide grief and find my way back to picking up the pieces. Ultimately, the experience that rocked my world and shook me to my very core has allowed me to emerge a stronger, more compassionate person.

What would you consider to be your top three talents/skills? Teaching, coaching and mentoring in the arts; Public speaking; singing, songwriting, performing; Building strong and supportive arts communities. For example, I’m in my 11th year of hosting the Sunday Night Song Stage (currently at The Almanac). The weekly event has become a hub for musicians of all ages and all levels of musicianship. In regards to community building, one of my proudest accomplishments is fostering a ten-year partnership with the Edmonton and Canmore Folk Music Festivals to present emerging talent on their prestigious stages. It’s such an incredible thrill! In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? I volunteer my time each week to host my weekly radio show called It Takes A Village on CJSR 88.5 FM. I believe it truly does take a whole village to raise a musician so the premise of the program is to introduce listeners to songwriters they may or may not have heard of. It’s all about creating community and giving emerging artists a leg up in the industry by providing exposure and experience. In the three years I’ve hosted the program, I’ve featured 124 performing artists live on my show. What is your vision of great leadership? The point, I think, is to lead by example and inspire others to realize their true potential. Great leadership comes from understanding that sometimes you are the teacher and sometimes you are the student. Also, never be afraid to fail and when you make a mistake, take responsibility and learn from it. My greatest successes are the result of the humble lessons I’ve learned by falling flat on my
face. A great leader recognizes the value of failure and provides the coaching to turn it around. If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? One of the things that made a huge impact in my life is my recovery from alcohol addiction. I’m nearly 23 years sober and I owe my sobriety to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. When I was young, I was a touring musician who drank to find confidence and overcome stage fright. Needless to say, addiction leveled what could have been an otherwise successful career. Once I started down the long road of recovery, I decided to dedicate my life to helping young musicians find their own authentic confidence by providing them with coaching and tools to empower them. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to my career if only I’d had someone to mentor me when I was floating in the bottom of a bottle. I’m grateful for the way things turned out though because I can use my experience for the greater good of others.

When life knocks you down, what lifts you up? My son and my daughter lift me up in ways I can’t even explain. My daughter Kate and her husband Jay have recently relocated to London, England where they are pursuing their dreams and living each day to the fullest. My son Trevor is the lead singer in the band Scenic Route to Alaska and he too, is pursuing his passion with gusto. My kids are my hero’s and my biggest inspirations. I don’t know how I got so lucky to have raised two such amazing people but I am eternally thankful and I tell them how much I love them every single day. How do you celebrate when you achieve a goal or a milestone? I celebrate very quietly actually. To be honest, I’m far more comfortable celebrating someone else’s achievement or milestone. I think that’s why I love helping emerging artists succeed. I can live vicariously through them and stay in the background – LOL! Who most inspires you and why? My kids inspire me every single day. They’ve both overcome incredible challenges and gone on to achieve truly great things. They have taught me what courage and determination are really all about. My work inspires me in untold ways. I’m a sessional instructor with MacEwan University teaching ‘Artist Management for the Music Industry’ and the Administrative Coordinator with the newly launched Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Edmonton. Both are richly rewarding experiences that keep me challenged, energized and in a perpetual state of growth. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”?
I know it’s been said a million times before but I believe that true beauty has absolutely nothing to do with outward appearance. When beauty lives in the heart, it doesn’t need to show up anywhere else. To live your life being genuinely kind, compassionate, forgiving, loving, caring, generous and gracious – that’s true beauty. How have business and/or personal relationships shaped your life? Relationships shape every aspect of my life. Community and valued friends are the beating heart of my existence and I feel blessed and grateful to experience the strong sense of belonging that a supportive community provides. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? I’ve been an avid runner for years and my dog and I spend countless hours on the trails along the river valley. I’m drawn to the rugged beauty of nature, the sounds of the birds, the honking of geese, the chatter of squirrels and the smell of the trees. One particular passion of mine is spending sunny days hunting for petrified wood along the banks of the North Saskatchewan river. There are magnificent pieces to be found and each one has its own mysterious story cloaked in how many centuries passed in its formation. It’s pure Zen time for me. What makes you laugh? Laughing is the best medicine and I’ve learned to laugh at myself - which is a really good thing! My friends always make me laugh – my dog and cat make me laugh – but ultimately, it’s my son and daughter who REALLY make me laugh. They’ve both got wicked senses of humor and once they get started, they make me laugh till my face literally hurts!

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi
Putting the
POWER OF MUSIC TO WORK
We all know that music has a powerful impact on our brain. Think of the last time you got a song stuck in your head. It played over and over and over in spite of all of your attempts to make it stop. Sometimes it’s the mere mention of a song title that is enough to jumpstart that incessant replay that neuroscientists call an earworm. See if you can keep one of these tunes out of your head once you have started singing it: Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” or “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” or “Who Let the Dogs Out”. Even though studies show that music engages our brains in a wide variety of ways, we often don’t use the power of music to our advantage. Music and mood are linked together. The way we look at the world changes depending on the music we are listening to in the moment. Play something upbeat and you suddenly feel more energetic and optimistic. Play something quieter and you begin to feel more relaxed and calm. There is a simple way to begin utilizing
the power of music. Start by creating two personal playlists. The key is to pick music that resonates with you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else might think of a song. It’s the impact that it has on you that is important. First find music that creates energy in your body. These songs have a quick pace or bouncy beat that makes your body want to move whether you chair dance or actually get up and boogey. “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas, “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon, “I Feel Good” by James Brown, or “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake are possible choices. On this playlist you can also include songs that have positive or motivating messages like “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor or “This Girl is On Fire” by Alicia Keys. Use this energizing playlist whenever you need a boost, feel bored or want to shift your energy upward.
18 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I April • 2017
Next find music that that soothes or grounds you. For me one of the most spiritually moving pieces of music is “Om Namo Bhagavate” by Deva Premal. The first time I heard it was at yoga during savasana, the relaxation part that comes at the end of the class. t seemed like it was somehow singing my spirit. Whenever I listen to it, I feel a sense of deep connection to myself and the world.
We LOVE
Your playlist might include classical music or songs like “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong or “Let it Be” by the Beatles. Use this calming playlist whenever you need to re-focus, de-stress or become more grounded. Remember choose the songs that work for you. Change your playlists whenever you discover new songs or when existing ones no longer serve their purpose. And if you still have one of those earworm tunes running around in your mind, try chewing a piece of gum. That often makes it stop – at least until the next time. Sacred Sex by Barbara Lee
Dance Perfection There is a story about a woman who was working in her front yard when a moving van pulled up next door. While the movers unloaded the van, her new neighbors walked over and introduced themselves to her. She was feeling selfconscious what with the dirt on her hands and face, her hair pulled back and her old worn gardening clothes. A few days later, she got an invitation from her new neighbors to join them at a community dance. She was so happy to have a chance to make a better impression. So she colored her hair, put on a girdle, glossed her lips, put on false eyelashes, got acrylic nails and popped in colored contact lenses. Stepping back from the mirror admiringly, she said to her husband, “There.
Now they can see the real me.” Many of us have a hard time accepting ourselves as we are. So we try on different outfits, different masks, different disguises that we think other people will find more attractive, more appealing, more acceptable. It’s easy for most of us to think about times we have rejected or pushed aside some person in our lives: a relative, a boss, a neighbor, a date. The truth is we have also rejected and pushed aside parts of ourselves. That’s part of being human. We all have many opportunities to diminish our sense of self, and we’re usually pretty good at accepting those invitations. In any moment, we can open in love or close in fear. We cannot do both at the same time.

We contract when we recoil, rather than extending love, care and compassion to others and ourselves. When we allow ourselves to be touched by another, both physically and emotionally, we create an opportunity for deep healing and repair. We are given an opportunity to see ourselves not through our own selfdoubts and self-criticisms, but through the eyes of someone who sees our beauty and our strengths. As we are reminded of our own loving nature, we can turn our gaze away from our self to look upon the world in which we live and find anew the opportunity to love and embrace all of creation. Loving Acceptance
FAN FEEDBACK Question? What kind of music do you listen to? Dianna: All depends on my mood, but always love folk, blues, bluegrass. Kim: Alternative/Folk Rock Juanita: I like rock.and Christian music
As sexual beings, our physical passion is not separate from the spiritual, but an expression of the intimacy that exists between the body and the spirit. As we experience the passion of sexual intimacy, we experience the deep vibrations of loving acceptance that can restore relationships and heal the world. In this way, sexual love can be viewed as an erotic meditation or a contemplative union with the Divine. Sacred sex is a portal through which we experience Divine love and then offer that love back to the universe. Spirit is in love with you. You have always done the best you could at the time you did it, made every decision the best you could with the information you had at the time you made it. Look at yourself through the eyes of unconditional love and see that you are perfect.
