Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes

My Aunt Judy, and cousin Bonnie visit the Fabulous@50 Experience for the first time.

Love and Gratitude When I started Fabulous@50 10 years ago, I jumped into the fire with both feet, with faith that what I didn’t know I would learn or I would find someone to help me. Along the way many people have helped me, some staying longer than others. My gratitude for these people cannot be expressed in enough words to fully express how I feel. My husband, John, who even when sick or injured shows up for me. My daughter Amber, good friends Jade and Sharon, never let me down. Isn’t that what family and close friends are supposed to do? Yes, but in my life that has not always been the case. I am glad I never gave up hope. Then there is my team! All those lovely ladies who volunteer to help make the event an amazing day for all the guests. But the biggest kudos go to my assistant Kyla Steinke. I always said I needed to clone myself, well Kyla is as close as my clone could be. She treats people the way

I would and has a great work ethnic too. I have complete trust in her, she always goes the extra mile. My wonderful friend Laurel Vespi, who was so jetlagged from a long trip, but still showed up with a smile on her face. Plus a big thank you to Murray Taylor, who quietly manages the stage from behind the curtain and always makes sure to dress to the theme of the show. (Miami Vice) This year I was so excited to have my Auntie Judy and my cousin Bonnie come out. Plus a group of my high school girlfriends. One of the girls said ” Who would of though little Dianna would be doing this? And yes sometimes it does seem surreal. But even in big changes, transformations, turning points or whatever you choose to call them, the heart of a person stays the same. With love to all of you...Dianna Dianna Bowes is the creative director of Fabulous@50 and editor of Be Fabulous! CLICK HERE to read more blogs.

Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

• 1 large garden potato, diced • 4 cups miso broth (or vegetable broth) • 2 medium market onions, peeled, diced • 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 2 pesto cubes (I had frozen a blended mix of my garden parsley and basil with olive oil and nutritional yeast in ice cubes) or 1 tbsp. fresh or 1 tsp. dried parsley and basil • 8 small to medium market tomatoes (approx. 1 cup), in pieces Directions 1. Sauté the squash, parsnip and potatoes in 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil for about 8 minutes to release natural sweetness. Tea with Sue Paulson

Catalysts for Growth

©

Like it or not, just as death and taxes are constants, so is change. As the Borg once said on an episode of Star Trek, “Resistance is futile.” When we pay attention to change, opportunities come along for growth. As a young girl, I didn’t like change. When I had beloved round-toe shoes and the style switched to pointed toes, I was upset. Each “new” in my life was highly suspect. I stubbornly clung to the familiar – the comfortable. That only worked for awhile. Most of the time, I was forced to shift and move with the change. That acceptance (often after much kicking and screaming) opened a door to growth. I began to realize that much could be gained if I were willing to explore the change in order to find its gifts. Catalysts

I read recently that the seeds of a certain kind of tree will only germinate and grow in the aftermath of a devastating fire. Extreme adversity is the catalyst. Think for a moment about the human catalysts in your life who have provided the spark to propel you forward. Mrs. Porter, my grade 10 and 11 English teacher – a tiny woman with a fierce passion for language – planted the seeds for my writing career. Who knew I would embrace her love of words! Throughout our lives, there are many people who have an impact: relatives, teachers, coaches, and even strangers who spark something in us. Now not all of these catalysts may be fondly remembered. In fact some of our biggest trigger points could still exist in relation to those

Even shoe styles push us to change.

closest to us. It can be hard to believe that our biggest growth times can come from those who mistreat and abuse us. Disaster

I was in junior high school when I had an unwelcome opportunity to stand in my own power. A member of the girls’ all-star volleyball team, I had stepped away from my position at a game to save a point – a heroic move that proved disastrous. We lost the game. Our coach, also my Social Studies teacher was known for his temper. He tore a strip off me in front of the team and shouted that it was my fault we had lost.

8 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2017

A highly-sensitive kid, I cried and shook for several hours. The next day, still shaking, I quietly told the coach I was quitting the team. I knew I had been bullied, and I wasn’t prepared to let that continue. I don’t remember how we got past that episode, but we came to an understanding, and he never lost his temper with me again. Plato said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” At every stage of our lives, if we take time to reflect about the changes we have experienced and our resulting growth, then it’s possible to welcome whatever is new that comes our way. Even the most disastrous of circumstances, tough as they are, will hold the makings of gifts if we choose to look for them. What about you – who are your growth catalysts, and what have you gained? Speaker and author, Sue Paulson inspires others to claim and love their magnificence. Her third book, “Magnificent Misery – From Adversity to Ecstasy” is available at Audrey’s and Ascendant Books in Edmonton or through Amazon. Dr. Eunice Beckett: Winner of the 2017 Inside Out Make Over What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? Looking forward to experiencing more in my relationships with friends and family. Playing more with my creative fun in cloth. And because of what I learned in my own retreat, I have turned my home into a spiritual retreat center. Where the focus of disturbance or disease are spiritual in nature. A place where true

healing can occur as it had with me. I will likely expand to a place (maybe a faculty) where one can learn to align themselves with nature’s rhythms and to share in the force of that harmony. I believe Nature is a living and breathing supporting Being that was given to us to heal with, communicate with, and to connect each other with. Whether a retreat is for an hour, a day, or a week, retreats are a ‘perspective enhancer’ that busy lives require.

10 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2017

How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? I have found that tragedy, hardship and adversity and even obstacles are tempering energies that shape us or breaks us and we get to decide which. I have learned from adversity never to identify fully with it– I give you an example of what I mean. When we lost everything in a house fire – I could have identified with the destruction of the fire and it could have consumed even me. I had a friend who helped me separate my spirit self from my loss and it was very healing to realize the strengths you have is really your heart and your soul and not your physical possessions. Keep your spirit separate from the adversity. Or at least hold that enduring part of you sacred and let life blend and shape you as it will. So the gifts I’ve gleaned are surrender, enduring hope, and finding the humor in all things even pain. The embodiment of these gifts led to strength and courage. And I learned the importance of retreat. For in my retreat from life with my sickness I met my spirit. The human spirit is immense and very powerful. In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? Presently, I’m working with Lyme clients who can’t afford natural health services. The natural progression of this may lead to creating a charity for individuals who are house bound with this disease and needing support or aligning with one that is already created. If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? On the day I left my mother’s home. My mom was only about 5’2” but made me sit up on the dryer that was just at the back door of our home making me look down

on her. She looked intently into my eyes as I looked down into hers and she told me, “You know that I love you and that I have raised you in the best way I can. You leave my home this day, to make your own way in the world. You will eventually master your life. You won’t do it right away but eventually you will. But know this! You can only master 80% of your life at best. And there will always be 20% that you will never master because that is chaos. However, how you deal with that chaos will be the makings of you are.” With these words of wisdom ringing in my consciousness, I was sent into the world alone and fully backed. I find it interesting, at times in my life when I was hanging my head in difficulty, I would think of her words ‘master not control’ mastering requires learning skills. And her words continue to shape me to this day. And this 80-20 belief keeps my ego in check and I am very thankful for this wise influence in my life. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? I believe that beauty is the force that comes from within and the individuals who cultivate their innermost part of themselves are the individuals of true and rare beauty. You really cannot know yourself by being alone, get out there and interact, listen, I mean really listen to others. Beauty comes from the spark between two souls interacting. Not what you look like or what you wear. What makes you laugh? Laughter to me is an expression of joy. And children are the best expression of that to me. They give me so much joy. Especially when the parent knows how to raise the spirit instead of breaking their spirit. My stepdaughter’s children are extreme joy to me and looking forward to that increasing legacy.

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson

Transform your Meal with Mustard The holidays are coming. A splendid time for sharing and connecting over some inspired food. One tasty way to enhance any event is to offer a delightful condiment, which might sound complicated. Although it sounds complicated, making mustard is a simple way to create flavour that can’t be beat. Basic Mustard 2 Tablespoons yellow mustard seeds (sometimes called white mustard seeds) 2 Tablespoons brown mustard seeds 1/4 Cup apple cider vinegar 2 Tablespoons water (or beer, or white wine) 1 Teaspoon salt Use a mortar and pestle, a grinder, or place the seeds in a sealed plastic bag and bash them up to get them to a medium texture. The finer you grind them, the more intensely flavoured your mustard becomes. There are plenty of options

as you blend your favourite flavours. Try adding lemon and dill for a great accompaniment to chicken. For a bit of heat, add a few flakes of dried peppers. For a honey mustard, add 1/4 Cup of honey. For something to go with your roast beef, add horseradish or garlic. You can also add some cranberry sauce for a wicked cranberry mustard that makes a turkey sandwich taste decadent. For the best flavour, let your mustard sit and rest at room temperature for eight hours before you put it in the fridge. Once it is refrigerated, the mustardiness will stop intensifying. Instead of the same ol’ thing this holiday season, be sure to play with your food and you’re sure to be eating inspired! Pam Robertson is the chief cook and bottle washer in The Ladybirds Kitchen. She’s wishing everyone a tasty season of merry making and connecting! You can reach her at pamrobertson@live.ca or by calling 780-232–0083.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi

There’s nothing magical about transformation

With all of the quick fix advertising that is constantly in our faces, it’s easy to get discouraged with the speed of our progress when we are trying to make positive changes. We are bombarded on TV and magazine covers with promises of major change in few days or weeks. It’s no wonder then that we often are disappointed that transformation somehow keeps eluding us. Turning Point

The truth is change takes time and effort. There is no mystical alchemy that turns things around in an instant. But secretly we all wish that there was. Sometimes people define a turning point in their lives that definitively marked the pivot away from what they had been doing and towards something they wanted more. Faulty Belief

Or they point to an a-ha moment when they became crystal clear about what change needed to happen. The trouble is when we hear those stories,

it leads us to the faulty belief that transformation is like some kind of snap your fingers make-over. The truth is there is no magic in a turning point. There is nothing special about a light bulb moment. Unless of course you do something with it. You see those moments when everything becomes clear are a little gift that can provide a spark of energy and intention. But they only result in change when you pair them with action. Results

Think about your own a-ha moments. We have them all the time. They can create within us a great intention to do something, to get moving, or to shake things up, but then time passes and we somehow never really get around to it. The spark of the a-ha wears off. Here’s the thing about transformation: You actually have to do something different to experience results. Transformation might be born in an idea but it becomes reality in concrete choices.

14 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2017

Even that is not enough. You actually have to stick with it long enough to create sustainable change. Most people significantly underestimate how long that really takes. New habits are not created in 21 days. They take somewhere between 66 and 285 days of focused effort. I can guarantee that people who recount the story of their turning point or a-ha moment and who have truly transformed something in their lives, had followed it up with some serious action for a long period of time. There’s nothing magical about transformation. It’s a simple formula: clarity + conscious intention + sustained purposeful action = amazing results Give it a try and see what you can create. Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. Learn more and get resources and inspiration

Mpingo tree sapling planted by program participants (clarinet wood from national tree of Tanzania)

My FABULOUS academic life at 50! It was a hot July 2008 night when our family of 5 moved to Phoenix, Arizona from Edmonton, Alberta. Although born in Toronto and a resident of Calgary for a number of years, my connection to Canada was primarily attached to Edmonton and area. After graduating from University of Alberta with my Bachelor of Education (music minor), and several years of teaching, I became a certified teacher with Edmonton Public Schools. My last year of teaching before moving, was in a Grade 3 classroom in Youngstown Elementary School. I thought finding a teaching position in Phoenix would be relatively easy, however much to my dismay, the search stretched out to years. I soon became very discouraged. Little did I know my dead-end job search would translate into one of my greatest career blessings! After celebrating our 25th anniversary in Italy and Greece and coming home to a “nothing career” I decided it was time to go back to school. My professor husband has a gener-

ous spousal support clause through his employment with Arizona State University (ASU), so it seemed like a natural fit for me to attend that institution. However, I really had no clue as to what to pursue! Without knowing how else to approach it, I started “shopping” through the online catalogue of graduate education programs to see what would entice me. That is when I stumbled upon the Master of Advanced Studies in Sustainable Tourism (MAS-ST) degree program. This sat with me very well because my interest in a future work career was changing. Master’s Program

With a wing and a prayer, I was accepted into ASU’s MAS-ST degree program in Fall 2012. During the second year of my master’s program, a professor suggested I consider furthering graduate studies by pursuing a PhD in ASU’s Community Resources and Development program. She had thought I had potential to be successful as a doctoral student.

16 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2017

While I was very flattered, it ignited a deep seeded fear in me. Through many years of schooling, both at the grade school and university levels, I had low self-worth. I never felt smart enough compared to other students in my classes. Now coupled with the fact I was an older student, it almost seemed an impossible decision. Many questions circled around my head: Did she not realize how old I was? (I was 52 at the time), Who would want to accept an “old lady” into a doctoral program?? Where would I find work as an older newly graduated PhD? Above all, I feared I would eventually be found out as a fake, a nobody, someone who presented to know something when in fact I didn’t know much as all (actually this is still very true and there is a term for it and it’s called the imposter syndrome). Eventually I applied, was accepted and am currently in my final year of my doctoral program. Even though there are still times of uncertainty (I can’t tell you how

many times I QUIT in my mind!!), and the struggles associated with my “age inferiority complex” are very real, I’ve been able to focus on being grateful for being where I am at in this stage of my life. I am also encouraged when I see others such as my twin sister Loretta Friedrich or women in the Fab@50 community, pursuing their passions during their 50 plus years. Although I still have this nagging voice whispering to me “Who is going to hire you after you graduate?” I continue to focus on the fact that age is just a number, and believe greater things for me are just on the horizon. Lana M. Olsen is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Community Resources and Development at Arizona State University (ASU). She is also a research analyst for the Centre for Sustainable Tourism at ASU. Her research interests include volunteer tourism’s impact on host communities (particularly youth), use of music in sustainable tourism development, and sustainability of volunteer tourism community projects.

What transformation is waiting within you? How many times have you gone through a transformation? Have you ever thought about it? We all have! But we don’t always know when it’s happening until it’s done and we take a moment to pause and reflect. In our early lives we transformed a lot: from baby in womb, to baby in arms; from toddler, to child, to teen. Then we became adults and we put our head down to get through life and we stop looking at the wonders of change. We started fearing it yet transformation can be fabulous. When I ask people, “How are things going?” I often get the response. “oh, you know same old… same old”. Well I must admit, I don’t know. For the past decade I have been navigating a series of life transformations. Our lives are continuously filled with

change, evolution and occasionally poignant transformation. Sometimes we embrace this process; often we don’t even recognize that it is happening, and other times we resist it. Hold a seed in your hand. Typically they are a shrivelled up pellet. Not much to look at. Yet they hold magic! Put that seed in the right environment of fertile soil, water, and warm sunshine, then watch the magic unfold. It’s boggles my mind, how those tiny seeds hold all the intelligence needed for an incredible plant to beautifully emerge. Whether it be a delicate flower or hardy tree, the transformation is undeniable. What transformations have you been making? Is it one you are embracing? Or are you resisting? Has your body changed? Has your relationship changed?

18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2017

Have you moved recently? Are you struggling with illness and pain? Are you feeling stuck in someway? Many of these situations, are one’s we feel we don’t have control over. Perhaps that is true for the initial catalyst to the change. But the magic is that we always can influence and choose how we respond and how our transformation will take shape. We are the gardeners of our own transformation. We can choose fertile soil, water and warm sunshine. Gratitude

We can choose to educate ourselves and transform our minds. We can choose to engage in healthy activities that transform our physical bodies. We can choose to embrace gratitude, generosity and celebration within our lives to bring about happiness when we are wrought with hurt. We can seek out new healing modalities when we feel there is no hope of relief for pain and illness.

We can create new careers, and loving relationships. All of these transformations are possible. I know personally this to be true, because each of these transformations are ones I have gone through over the past ten years. Releasing Pain

What transformation are you ready to make? What seed is waiting to unfold? Is it an idea? Is it your hidden dream? A trip, a job, a relationship? Might it be transforming your body to fit and healthy? Might it be releasing pain and illness? All of these are possible. They just need the right environment and support. FAB Books! Wisdoms and Affirmations: To Give You Wings To Soar by Irene Cabay About The Book I was 40 years old and going through one of the seemingly worst moments of my life. My husband of 23 years had just left me and I felt as though my world had come crashing down. I had been a stay-at-home Mom for most of those years and had only just begun to work part-time. I felt I had been tossed out of my cozy birdcage and left to free-fall into oblivion. A few years later, my oldest son called on one of my particularly down days. After listening to me whine and cry over the phone, he said, “Mom, I’m going to send you a book and some cassettes. Maybe they will help.” Through the book and cassettes, I learned how to relax and meditate, and to understand that I did have control over my life. I then began listening to a CD series that taught me how I can change my life for the better through positive affirmations. I found myself slowly being transformed into a better, happier, and more optimistic person. If I am a better person than I was last year, then progress has been made. My life has gone from devastating to amazing! I continue to use affirmations because the higher I fly the more I see. May your life also be transformed by these principles. Get your book http://www.irenecabay.com/

The first step toward getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are. Unknown
