Celebrating Your Past
Brenda, Judy, Ingrid, Dianna and Carol all went to school at Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton, Alberta - graduating in 1975 and 76.
This issue of Be Fabulous! is about Celebrating the Past. I have been on a quest in the last year to find the lost ones. Sometimes we get so busy we lose touch with those that meant so much to us. I have had that experience several times. One was a woman I worked with in my 20’s at Woodward’s. We went on different paths and found each other through Fabulous@50 last year. I had been looking for her with no luck and she googled me and decided to go to the Calgary Fabulous@50 Tradeshow to see if I was there. The next thing I knew, I was on the phone with her, it was very emotional, as Dawn was an angel to me during tough times. Since then she has come to Edmonton and I have visited her in Calgary. Yes, we both have changed, but our hearts are the same. Last summer a group of girls from high
school reunited for dinner. There were tears, laughter and we all left feeling like time had stood still. I celebrate every relationship from my past, even the ones that caused me grief. I thank those people for teaching me precious lessons that I will forever hold dear. Dianna Bowes is the creative director of Fabulous@50 and editor of Be Fabulous! CLICK HERE to read more blogs.
Dawn and Dianna worked together at Woodwards in the late 70’s.

Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
CAMELINA
OIL I recently caught up with Elysia Vandenhurk, COO at Three Farmers, based in Saskatoon, SK. Three Farmers is a Canadian company that’s doing big things in agriculture that stems from using an ancient grain called camelina. There are plenty of reasons to love the cold pressed oil that comes from camelina. It tastes terrific, with a flavour that’s described as earthy and light. It contains Omega-3-6-9’s naturally, which means if you’re someone who doesn’t like to eat fish, you’re still able to get those important Omegas. And, you can cook with this oil at very high temperatures because of its high smoke point (higher than coconut, olive, and canola) without concern about the nutrition breaking down. Camelina oil has a light taste that compliments everything from salad dressings, to
stir fry, savoury breads, and grilled dishes. I’ve been testing it extensively because of all its benefits, and I really like it. When you pour the oil from your bottle, everything that is there is the result of carefully squished camelina. That’s it. There are no chemicals or additives used during processing, as there are with some other oils. Each bottle of oil is marked with a tracking number, so you can go to the Three Farmers website and see who grew your batch and learn about how its harvested. Here’s a great recipe I’ve developed to introduce you to camelina oil (though you can also replace it with another oil, of course). This is a savoury apple and leek dish that’s delicious alongside pork, chicken, or fish. If you add a handful of cranberries it can easily fancy up your holiday turkey or ham, too.

Warm Apple Leeky – Serves 4 1 Tbsp Camelina Oil (or another oil) 1 medium sized leek, rinsed well and sliced into rings 2 medium red apples good for cooking (Jonathan, Braeburn, Cortland), cored and sliced into half inch pieces) 2 Tbsp lemon juice (to stop apples from browning) 1 stalk of celery, chopped ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper 1 tsp ground coriander 1/3 cup walnuts Method: Heat camelina oil to medium in a full sized skillet, then add sliced leek. Sauté for 2 minutes, until softened, then add sliced apple with lemon juice, celery, coriander, salt, and pepper to the pan, and continue sautéing for 2 minutes, or until things are softened as much as you like (I like to have a little crunch to the celery and apples). Add walnuts. Taste. Adjust seasonings if needed. Remove from heat. Drizzle with another teaspoon of camelina oil if desired. Toss everything together and serve alongside your meal to make it amazing. Pam Robertson is the inspiration behind The Ladybirds’ Kitchen and she’s on a quest to help find their zest for cooking. She is a coach with Fabulous @ 50, a best-selling author, and wrote Eat Inspired: The Only Food Journal You Really Need. Tea with Sue Paulson
With a Story on My Lips Both my paternal grandfather and my maternal grandmother were storytellers. I know I inherited “the gift of the gab” from them. Not only do I love to tell stories, I love to hear other people’s stories, particularly those from my family tree. Questions about their lives float through my head. Where did they come from? How did my ancestors get to Canada? What challenges did they face, and what adversity did they overcome? With our DNA entwined, I have been very curious
about how their characters have shaped mine. Pioneer Stock
I come from sturdy pioneer stock on my dad’s side. His grandparents were given land in southern Alberta by the CPR along with enough lumber to build a house. An unlikely pairing of an Irish Catholic stenographer from Chicago with a Polish Catholic coal miner resulted in four children and more land, which my cousins still own and farm south of Brooks.
8 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October• 2017
It was a hard life for farmers in southern Alberta in the early 1900’s. Hot, dry conditions and bug infestations, particularly in the 1930s did little to ensure a good living. How did they get through? With dogged determination, they just kept putting one foot in front of the other. They faced whatever was in front of them and endured suffering and privation. Despite hardships, both great grandparents lived well into their 80s. Fry’s Fame
My mom’s people had English and Welsh roots. In fact, we’re distantly related to the Fry family of Fry’s cocoa fame. While she worked around the house, my grandmother was always whistling or singing. My grandfather was her hero and the love of her life. He was a station agent for the CPR for many years. When he began to suffer from mental illness, she had to go to work at the local cafe to support the family. Terribly shy, she struggled to serve even a cup of coffee. Yet, step by step, she learned the restaurant business and became a business owner - despite just
a grade 4 education. Many were her heartaches with the loss of her husband, a daughter and grandchildren, yet she soldiered on. She was past 80 when she said to me, “Susan, I think I’m finally learning how to have fun!” Gifts I Recieved
I was close to all my grandparents – even closer than my own parents. I watched, I listened, and I learned. Now that I’m well along into my second fifty, I often reflect about the gifts I received from my intrepid ancestors - determination, resilience, a sense of humor, musical and artistic abilities, courage, and of course, my love of stories. Bless you, my wonderful family tree - because of you and what you endured, you made it possible for me to live a rich and fulfilling life! Fabulous@50 Edmonton Team
Edmonton’s Fabulous@50 Sister Team Grows DIANNA BOWES - Fabulous@50 Founder What has always fed my soul is working with women who are pulled by their hearts to make a difference. When I was looking to gather a team to support me with the Edmonton area, I reached out and Brynda, Sue and Trish took my hand. All of these women have been friends that turned into heartsisters. Having them support me will mean we will have more events for you, in different parts of Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Millwood, and Sherwood Park. Watch as our sister team grows. SUE PAULSON - Edmonton Millwood Co-organizer How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? This month I celebrate five years of a new and more joyful life since cancer surgery. Out of extreme adversity and pain can come wonderful gifts. What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life?Throughout my cancer journey, not only did I embrace the gift of receiving, but I became aware that I was worthy of receiving and being cared for. Now i am able to see my own magnificence. I have always been able to see and appreciate the magnificence in others - now I have joined the club! These gifts have caused me to be bolder in my approach to new and different paths for the next part of my life. I recently discovered a latent gift for healing through sound. As I grow in this new direction, I plan to use my voice in a totally different way to help others self-heal. TRISH KLINZMANN - Spruce Grove Co-organizer What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? I am now 60 years young and looking forward to the next half of my life by creating many new and wonderful memories with family and friends. To help my children by encouraging, loving and babysitting my grandchildren. I have successfully started 2 new home based businesses and am having fun meeting new and exciting people on the way to more of everything life has to offer. What feeds your soul? Babies feed my soul. I have a 21 month old grandson and I love how courious he is about everything. The astonished look on his face the first time he rolled over, the first time he saw his fingers moving he held then up moving them over and over again. I love to see the many smiles and hear the laughter he brings to the room for the smallest things. 10 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October• 2017
BRYNDA ROCHE - Sherwood Park Co-organizer In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? I have discovered that my top gifts are Service, Knowledge, Teaching and Extraordinary Trust. So, to answer this questionI believe that using my gifts fully to enhance the lives of others would be my greatest preference and allow me to live a life on full purpose. When I am of service to others- I know that I am fulfilling God’s purpose for me and making a difference in the lives of others. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? I Love nature to its fullest beauty. I especially love the sunrises and the spectacular sunsets that God presents to us at the beginning and end of each day. I run to the window the second my eyes pop open to bask in the glory of a brand new day. I stand in silence to experience the beauty of a new day. The sunrise reminds me of a time where the world awakens to a new beginning- a new start- a new miraculous day to live in the way we choose to live. If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? I was an observer in the Vancouver Cancer Hospital when my mother battled her journey for 4 years I became aware of what truly matters in life. I learned that it does not matter what you own, what you have in your bank account, what you drive, or what position you hold in your career. At the end of your life- all you have is your memories, the people in your life surrounding you, and what you leave is your legacy.
Ignite Your Legacy My name is Dianna Bowes and I am the founder of Fabulous@50. I started Fabulous@50 in 2008, because I saw a need for a safe place for women 40 + to gather and grow. CHIA:
The Tiny Superfood You Need to Know About Chia seeds are tiny yet mighty in their nutritional benefits. They swell to 10 times their original size when placed in liquid, making them ideal for thickening puddings and smoothies. Just a few of the tricks up the sleeves of chia seeds include… • High in omega-3 fatty acids- this makes them anti-inflammatory • Great source of soluble and insoluble fiber - great for digestion and balanced blood sugars • More calcium than milk per servingimportant for bone health • Higher in antioxidants than blueberries • High in vitamins A, B, D and E • Loaded with magnesium – we are all low in Magnesium • Good source of protein – who needs meat, dairy or eggs! • Easy to digest and assimilate (low in phytates) • Help balance blood sugar levels and get rid of sugar cravings • Supports healthy digestion Chia is a true superfood. The direct translation of chia means strength in the Mayan language, and was a valuable food of traditional Mayan, Inca and Aztec people. Apparently, they used to trade chia seeds for gold as they were such a valuable source of energy. Some of my favorite ways to eat chia include soaking them all day or overnight and then using them to make a sugar free chia pudding that can be used for
breakfast, or a bit of a desert after a meal. I also add soaked chia seeds in my smoothies, added to soups or adding them to dehydrated gluten free crackers. Berry Chia Pudding Ingredients • 2 tablespoons ground chia seeds • 1 cup strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or a mix • 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk • 1 tablespoon shredded coconut • Stevia to taste Directions Combine chia with coconut milk and leave on your counter at room temperature all day or overnight. Then mix in the rest of your ingredients. You can eat it or chill it in the fridge until you are ready to eat it. Quadruple the recipe and make a batch up for the week. Adding chia seeds to your diet is amazing for your gut health, hormone balance, blood sugar balance and weight loss. Shonda believes that every person can have vibrant health. Whether it’s carrying extra weight, hormone or blood sugar imbalances, digestive issues or other chronic diseases, she digs deep to find the root cause so her clients can have incredible health. Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi
A Reunion with the
PAST
Mention “high school reunion” and for many women it often creates an odd mix of curiosity, anticipation and dread. The idea of stepping into the past and confronting our former selves can be a little intimidating. Back then – whenever then was – obviously we were younger, often thinner, with years of possibility still ahead of us. Even though in hindsight most of our hairstyle choices seemed a little questionable, our youth was a time when we were fresh faced, idealistic, and yet concerned with the most superficial of things. At my 10th high school reunion, it seemed like it hadn’t been all that long since we had graduated. Everyone mingled in their comfortable cliques catching up with the gang, discovering who had married their sweetheart, which careers people had settled into and who had taken the parenting plunge. Things were still as superficial as they often were back in the day when worries revolved around what people looked like, who they
hung out with and who had the coolest stuff. Looking back now, we were all still so young then. Fast forward to this year, when I attended my 40th reunion and the focus was slightly different. Now there was a greater interest in the whole of our graduating class. Those smaller groups we maintained then seemed far less important or interesting many decades later. The room was filled with squeals of delight as one by one people recognized those who hadn’t changed one bit. There were other more subtle realizations that came from looking at a name tag, searching one’s memory, and trying to reconcile a face and a name that didn’t match our recollection. But it was the quality of the conversation that had really changed. No one cared any more whether you had been part of the in crowd or not. It was just so nice to see people for who they were without the layers of judgement and to learn that the
14 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October• 2017
vast majority were fully engaged in living life. Of course there were those sobering moments, when learning of the death of some people, and the firm reminder that time is indeed passing for all of us, and that some of those fresh faced kids got far less than seemed fair. Stay connected
In the 40 years since graduation, I had maintained the friendships that were most dear to me. While we are scattered around the globe, this small group of cherished women still stay connected thorough email, social media and an almost annual get-together. There was no need to play catch up with them at the reunion. Dreams
We LOVE
In some sense I played catch up the most with myself. I thought about what had become of that girl who had wandered those hallways, of those dreams she had set aside, and the ones that came true that she had never imagined back then. So when the opportunity arises to attend your reunion, go with a carefree spirit. Don’t worry about what to wear, or whether your accomplishments will make the grade. Go and catch up with yourself. My Journey The scars we carry are from the battles we have fought
October is breast cancer awareness month, and the “Celebrate your Past” issue for the Be Fabulous! Magazine. What better way to honour both of these themes then to share a heartfelt story written by a lovely lady that I know. It’s a story about her experiences of coming to terms regarding a difficult time in her life, honouring her scars and celebrating who she has become. Joanne Neweduk - Director and Community Leader for Fabulous@50 Calgary I wanted to share a portion of my journey with you. I have had cancer, I went through all my treatments, chemo – a double mastectomy – radiation. My journey through cancer has given me many challenges and I have also received a few gifts. It has taken me awhile to get used to my new “look”. I have scars on both sides of my chest that are at least 8 inches long. One side is longer because I had emergency surgery. Swimming
Recently I have started swimming. I am trying to build up my strength and my energy levels. I had no idea what it would be like to walk into the change room at the pool for the first time. People stare. They are not mean, they mean no harm, it is a lot to take in if you have never seen what a double mastectomy looks like. The kids stare with such wide eyes not really understanding what they are looking at. The women stare with such a look of shock on their faces. My first instinct was to run and hide. My breasts are gone. I nursed my children with them, they were a rite of passage as a young woman. I remember my mom taking me shopping for my first bra.
It has been devastating to lose them. What consoles me is the knowledge that when I lost my breasts I also got rid of the cancer. I quickly decided though that I did not fight cancer and win only to hide from life later. This is me I have changed. Like the caterpillar into the butterfly I have transformed. I will not hide! We all have scars, some are inside, some are outside. It is not about our scars – it is about how we react to them. The scars we carry are from the battles we have fought.
Maureen Macdonald.
18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October• 2017
They give us character and build our strength. I will not hide! I am gaining my strength through all of this. I want to swim to get better and be whole. If you see me in the change room, you can approach me, I will share my story with you. I will help you through your journey if I can. This is one of my hardest challenges, the strength and confidence I am gaining is incredible. No Limits
To the young girls who see me I am sorry they must learn at such an early age why I look different. To the ladies who stare with aghast, thank you. For you are giving me the strength I need to push through the fear, insecurity and pain of my journey. I can now stand in my own power and be everything I need to be.
I have no limits on who I am or where I am going. I am a warrior. I am sharing this part of my story so you will understand to take whatever life throws at you and let it make you stronger and better. Learn to feel your power of knowing you have faced down life’s challenges and won. Carry your scars – inside and out with pride. They are the affirmations that you are alive. You won! I also want to say I have a wonderful support team around me. They encourage me, protect me, and push me to stand tall. Build your team – block out the negative and embrace those who support and lift you up. I now hold my head high as I walk into the change room at the pool. Written and lived by Maureen Macdonald. DRESS WELL
Whatever Your Stage of Life Many of us are confused, frustrated and discouraged with the clothes we own. Often in our fifties and beyond, it can sometimes feel impossible to find great clothes that reflect how we feel about ourselves. There are three simple things to think about when looking for those great clothes we see on others but never seem to find ourselves. The secret to dressing well at whatever stage of life you are experiencing is to look for current styles that fit you body and highlight your best feature(s). It sounds so simple and it is when you understand a few things about clothes: First - current styles don’t necessarily mean the “trends” we are seeing in stores each season. The styles that women of a certain age need to be looking for are Classic Styles like crisp shirts, straight leg trousers, blazers, Jewel/U/V-neck tops, ballet flats or low-heeled pumps, a great tote, a great watch and awesome jewelry. These “Classic” Styles have staying power. That is why we see them season after season. Second – fit your body can often be challenging as our bodies have gone through many changes over the years. However, regardless of age, clothing is made to what is considered “Ideal Proportions”. We all come in a variety of shapes and sizes
and very few of us fall into that “ideal” category. I encourage everyone to fit the challenge areas (Bust, waist, hip or thigh) first and find a good reliable tailor to alter clothing for perfect fit. If this impacts your clothing budget, try shopping the seasonal sales so that the combination of clothes and tailoring is not prohibitive. And third, highlight your best feature(s) which could be a defined waist, great legs, broad shoulders, beautiful skin, great hair, a pretty face or a great smile. Whatever it is, the goal is to bring attention to that area, and then use tactics like colour, line of clothing, scarves, jewelry to
20 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October• 2017
redirect that attention to your face the ‘center of communication’ where you want people looking. Try to avoid the traps of getting stuck in a decade, hiding in your clothes or following fashion cycles to closely, avoid fussy fabrics and details – lace, small prints, juvenile styles or too matchy-matchy. Luxury Fabrics
As we age, keep things simple, cover- up, look for solid colours that suit you or prints that don’t undermine or overwhelm you. Find clothes in luxury fabrics like silk, cashmere, leather – fabrics that look good on you and are touchable. Finish your combinations with great accessories – scarves, jewelry - and great shoes. From our youth to today, clothing must accommodate the physical and emotional changes we all experience. From the more revealing clothes we wore in our ‘20’s to simple classic silhouettes in our ‘50’s and beyond, dressing well is about responding to those changes while staying in tune with current styles and highlighting the positive. As a tumor develops, you may note the following signs: • A lump in the breast or underarm that persists after your menstrual cycle. • Swelling in the armpit. • Pain or tenderness in the breast. • A noticeable flattening or indentation on the breast, which may indicate a tumor that cannot be seen or felt. • Any change in the size, contour, texture, or temperature of the breast. • A change in the nipple, such as a nipple retraction, dimpling, itching, a burning sensation, or ulceration.
• Unusual discharge from the nipple that may be clear, bloody, or another color. • A marble-like area under the skin. • An area that is distinctly different from any other area on either breast. • One or both breasts develop an abnormal lump or persistent pain, or look or feel abnormal. • You have swollen lymph glands in your armpits.
