Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes

You are

FABULOUS! With the theme of Body Love and Authenticity for this issue, I went to a Lingerie Party to do some research. The party was hosted by one of our Fabulous@50 team, Sue Paulson. Suzanne Harris, owner of Aphrodite Undercover Lingerie had a selection of beautiful lingerie and 6 baby boomer women willing to try them on and do a little fashion show. (yes, I bought a few pieces). As a young women I attended many parties much like this, and believe me I was very shy about trying anything on. I had a self Image that just did not align. Sexy was not a word I would have described myself. And to be honest I still don’t identify with that word. Sensual, yes. It has taken me about 20 years to get myself to a place of Body Love. Even though I am closing in on 60 years old, my body had given me so many blessing. Two being my children, David and Amber. I thank my lucky stars everytime I go to work out, ride my bike or lift heavy grocery bags. My body took me through two very serious back surgeries, so I do not take these tasks for granted. I am very fortunate to be walking, as I was very close to a spinal collapse in 1999. I am very comfortable with my body now, I am far from being a fitness model, but I am strong, curvy and can do almost everything. It is too bad it took such a major surgery to get me to Body Love, but better latethan never, I say. Same goes with authenticity, as a young women, I really did not know or under

My first and only boudoir photo experience in 2012 at 54 years old. It pushed my limits and the photos turned out so beautiful I made up a book for my husband for a wedding gift.

stand who I was. I think one of the beautiful things of getting older, is I find women are more authentic. For the first time in my life, I am happy with me. I know my strengths, and my weaknesses, and I am okay with all of them. I am still always improving, learning and screwing up, but my intention is to always be compassionate, authentic and loving. These are words I choose many years ago in my personal development journey. Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson

Braised Lamb Shanks The process of braising sounds fancy, and tastes delicious. Braised meat is seared in a frying pan to brown and seal the juices in, and then stewed slowly in flavourful broth. Lamb is a rich tasting and delicious meat that takes very well to this kind of cooking, and the shanks are much less expensive than lamb chops or rack of lamb. Ingredients for 3 servings 3 lamb shanks 2 Tbsps chopped dried rosemary or 1 sprig of fresh 2 tsps dried thyme, chopped or small handful of fresh 2 Tbsps finely chopped garlic 1 medium diced onion 2 Tbsps tomato paste (puree) or 1 cup nice red wine 4 Tbsps olive oil

4 Cups of chicken (or lamb) stock 2 large bay leaves 2 carrots, peeled and chopped into half inch pieces ½ cup fresh chopped parsley (optional, for garnish) Preheat the oven to 300 while you prepare the lamb. Place half the olive oil in the pan, heat to medium, and brown the lamb shanks on all sides (takes about 10 minutes, and you can do these one at a time depending on the size of your pan). Add more olive oil as needed. As shanks are browned, place them in a large stewing pot or Dutch oven and set aside. Add chopped onions to the pan on medium heat, and then add herbs and seasonings, stirring frequently and sautéing until onions are translucent.

6 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I February • 2018

Add some stock near the end to make sure all the good bits are scraped off the bottom of the pan, then add tomato paste and stir until everything is well incorporated. Add the rest of the stock and everything except parsley to your stewing pot. Bones of the shanks may stick out a bit so you can cover the pot with foil instead of the lid if necessary. Cook, covered, for about 2 hours (once the bones move freely in the shanks, they are done). Serve with creamy mashed potatoes, veggies, and sprinkle everything with parsley.

Food Stories with Loretta Friedrich

Authentic Self-Love in a Meal I look for a specific taste that sends me to the tropics especially in the middle of winter. This one delivers with flavor interest, nutrition, and satiation. There’s a whole lot of warmth in this plate too with its sunny addition of banana, bee pollen and Thai basil. Give me a natural bodyloving meal no matter what time of year because I know I’m worth it! I like to create meals like this one that are Nutritious Easy Affordable Tasty.

Do you know what else I love about it? It offers honest taste; there is no phoniness here in this from-scratch (but remember, easy) dish. The ingredients naturally shine – like rays of sunshine we seek on a cold gloomy day – and truly nourish. My spirits lift by the cheerful presentation and my body happily receives nutrient-rich foods from happy eggs (from happy hens), raw honey, coconut milk and more.

8 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I February • 2018

I strive to be authentic in all my relationships including the one I have with myself. I like to think that when I nourish my body with foods that are authentic it’s an act of self-love too. What dishes speak warmth, love, and genuine nourishment to you? I suggest you include them in your food story. Coconut Peanut Banana Pancakes (dairy-free, gluten-free) Serves 1 to 2 • Coconut oil (enough to cover bottom of pan) • 1 medium ripe banana, mashed • 2 happy eggs, beaten • 1 Tbsp organic natural peanut butter • 1/4 cup organic coconut milk • 1 tsp organic natural peanut butter • 1/2 tsp local raw honey • 1 tsp Thai basil, finely chopped • Sprinkle of bee pollen (optional)

Heat coconut oil in frying pan. Meanwhile, combine mashed banana, beaten eggs, and 1 Tbsp peanut butter in a bowl. When oil is hot, drop small (key is small, otherwise it can hard to flip) spoonfuls of batter into pan. When they start to bubble on top, flip to turn pancakes over and cook for another 2 minutes longer. Stack and repeat. To make sauce, blend coconut milk, remaining peanut butter, and raw honey together. Drizzle over pancakes and top with chopped Thai basil and a sprinkle of bee pollen. Serve immediately while still warm. Rhonda Nedelec: Loving her life, her family and her body What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? Creativity runs in my family; we have animators, illustrators, poets, singers, actors and even decorative artists. Growing up, I used to write funny little stories, sing a lot, play guitar and be involved in musical theatre. I have been feeling for some time that there is more creativity in me that needs to come out. Although I work in a creative industry, my specific role doesn’t lend itself to tap into my personal creativity like that so I do have a vision for what’s to come. I feel like there is a children’s book or two in me to write; I would love to learn to play piano, to do more singing and because I’m so visual, perhaps take a photography and videography course. Oh and travel. My husband and I have big travel plans.

How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? Oh wow, great question. My favorite saying is “Experience, she is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lesson later.” We all have back-stories and I’m no different. My parents were divorced, I grew up in a blended family and the struggles that came with that, I have been divorced myself, a single parent of twin baby boys and much like many of us, I have experienced a number of losses at every level; financially, spiritually, relationally and at times, admittedly I even lost myself. I guess I’m stubborn and had to learn the hard way. It felt like I had to figure out what I wanted by first experiencing what I didn’t. My hardships truly helped me to create focus and to refine without a doubt, exactly what I need, what I want and

10 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I February • 2018

what’s important to me. I finally realized that I could be the architect of my own life and I get to decide because I’m the boss of me. So today, I mindfully choose the people in my life that align with my core values and frankly bring me joy because life is too short. My experiences gave me new lenses in which to see the world. Now I can spot the ‘toxic energy vampires’ a mile away and I don’t even let them close because I am fiercely protective of my joy. My experiences have validated exactly how I want to show up as a wife, a mother, a friend, a business partner, a member of our community and frankly a good human being. What would you consider to be your top three talents/skills? Being the over thinker that I am, I struggled with this question so I chose to put it out to a few of my closest friends to have them share what they see. Seems to be a theme in what they said about how I show up. Their feedback was the following: you’re empathy and ability to see things from other people’s perspectives. You’re intuitive with a strong ability to listen, seek to understand and translate what people want and need. Your strong communication skills and when required your ability to have tough conversations while still ensuring the other person feels good when they walk away. You are a connector with a strong ability to engage with people. Your positivity and glass half full way in which you choose to see the world. You are a leader that serves everyone around you. What is your vision of great leadership? Great leadership to me is living leadership. Doing not just saying. Being not just talking about it. Show me. What you LIVE is what you believe, not what you say because words are empty for me. True leadership in my opinion is living it and demonstrating possibility.

Rhonda with husband Greg and their children.

I’m not speaking to being perfect because that does not exist; as by nature we are all flawed. I am talking about, for the most part. We’ve all seen lots of folks that can “talk the talk” but not “walk the walk” and the other areas of their life are giving that away. Their marriages are a mess, they are at odds with their kids, conflict and drama abound and they have situations blowing up all around them. In the end, I have a hard time buying what they are selling. On the other hand, if there is a consistent hum of that leader being a good human being, backed up with good and sensible choices and how that shows up positively throughout their lives, well, now I believe you. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? Beauty is an eco system that is made up of many things, all working together to create this one big beautiful living and breathing thing. Self-love is beautiful, confidence is beautiful, humor is beautiful, being a friend is beautiful, vulnerability

is beautiful, being real and living your true essence is beautiful. Being respectful, honest, trustworthy, open, present and kind is beautiful. As a young woman, when I “tried” to focus on the outside (my hair, makeup, what I was wearing, etc.) as that being the most important thing, it felt empty and contrived. Like putting on a show. I feel like it was never sustainable because it wasn’t rooted in anything that was sustainable. Of all the beautiful people I have had the opportunity to meet and know, they all shine from the inside out. That’s where I learned my focus should be. That’s the real stuff in my opinion. That’s the stuff that lasts. What makes you laugh? If you asked this question to my family and friends, they would answer “everything”. I do laugh a lot; it’s involuntary. I have a kooky, silly sense of humor and an amusing way to see the world so laughing comes easy to me. Upon reflecting on that though, it wasn’t always that way. The times in my life when I was sad, I know that I didn’t laugh much.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi

The REAL YOU is Perfectly Fabulous Ever notice how easy it is to acknowledge the skills and talents of other women yet shy away from celebrating your own fabulousness? When someone comments on how wonderful you are or what a great job you did, do you brush it off as not that big a deal? If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. It’s a pretty common experience. Secretly we all have some degree of the imposter syndrome. We don’t really believe that we are as fabulous as other people seem to think. We might even have a slightly uneasy feeling that one day everyone will find out that we don’t have it all together nearly as well as it might seem. As women, we regularly think that we should do more. In spite of a million things we’re juggling, somehow it’s not enough.

We might even entertain the scarier thought that somehow “I am not enough.” Not a chance! The real you is more than enough. That’s true even when the real you is not superwoman, doesn’t know all the answers and needs some help once in a while. The real you is not perfect – thank goodness! Knock-offs in designer purses or jeans is one thing – but when it comes to people, we love the real thing. You don’t have to try to be anything other than yourself. It’s your uniqueness that actually makes you fabulous – warts and all. Think of it this way – you are a work in progress. Making mistakes is just part of the journey. Your fabulousness does not reside at some point in the future when you lose ten pounds, find the right partner, land five new clients or de-clutter

your house. Go ahead and set whatever goals you want and know that all along the way you – the real you – is just fine. You don’t have to apologize for who you are any longer. Go ahead and embrace the real you. Here are some things to try: • Share your story. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you are not alone. • Keep a success journal. Write down your accomplishments – big and small. It’s a great way to build self-confidence. • Banish ‘should’ and ‘always’ from your vocabulary. They are a fast track to perfectionism. • Look in the mirror and smile at yourself. Be amazed by the person you see. You were fabulous on the day you were born and you are fabulous today. That’s just perfect. Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. Six Steps to Sexy:

How to Rock Your Lingerie As a lingerie stylist, I spend lots of time talking to women about lingerie, which means I spend lots of time talking to women about their bodies. Here are six things I find myself saying over and over again. 1. Accept your body. You know all the women you see in magazines and on TV? They don’t really look like that. I mean they REALLY don’t look like that. At lingerie fashion shows you see everything, and guess what? Even the thin, beautiful 23-year-olds have cellulite and jiggly bums. We’ve got what we’ve got. Accept it. Celebrate it. 2. Dress your body with love. We’ve all experienced that moment when

we look in the mirror and, despite how great the outfit looked on the mannequin, it just doesn’t work for us. All bodies are different. Learning which styles and shapes create a balanced look on your own body will go a long way to making you look and feel great in your lingerie. Think you don’t look good in lingerie? Not true. You just haven’t found your style yet. Be patient. Ask for help and a trusted eye if you need it. Wearing things that make us feel good affects our energy and our mood. You want to feel gorgeous and confident in your clothes. Choose pieces where comfort and sexy co-exist. 3. Live sensually.

16 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I February • 2018

Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love, is our company namesake for a reason. Aphrodite encourages us take pleasure in our bodies, not just sexually, but sensually. She invites us to delight in tastes and scents and tactile sensations. She reminds us to be fully present in our moments, to observe, to listen, and most importantly, to savor. Enjoy pleasure as a daily part of life. 4. Define your own sexy. There are lots of different kinds of sexy. Your inner goddess may want to be glamourous, mysterious, coy, sporty, demure, down-to-earth, fierce…or any combination of these. Your sexy is what feels right to you. Wear what you feel great in, not what you think sexy ‘should’ look like. 5. Start small. If you’re new to lingerie, or new again, it’s okay to start small. You might try a lacy panty. Or some stay ups. This thigh-high hosiery is easy to wear, and its lacy bands make them as flirty as stockings without the fuss of a garter belt. Stay ups can be worn as a surprise for a partner to find, or a delicious little secret. If you go this route, splurge for quality. Cheaply made stay ups tend to be too tight, too short, or not actually ‘stay up.’ 6. Play Lingerie has the incredible ability to help us channel our inner goddesses. Have fun with it! Try something new. Explore. Connect. Be playful. Enjoy yourself, and each other. Here’s a secret: lingerie isn’t for men. It’s for us. It’s for how it makes us feel. The truth is, when we feel sexy and powerful and connected to our inner goddess, we turn ourselves on. So let your goddess come out to play. What happens next is up to you.

Suzanne Harris is owner and lingerie stylist at Aphrodite Undercover Lingerie in Edmonton, where she loves helping women connect with their inner goddess. She believes the sexiest thing a woman can wear is confidence, and she lovingly shops both North America and Europe for an array of flattering choices to suit different sexy styles and body types and from slim to plus. She offers personal consultations, private shopping experiences, and home parties, as well as pop-up events and an online boutique. Do You Love Your Body as much as It Loves You?© I love George Burns’ song “I wish I was 18 again”. This March, as part of my “second 50” adventure, I get to experience being 18 again. These days, no one will mistake me for an 18-year old. Gravity has done its part to pull the perky bits down to somewhat saggy. Life has carved tiny facial lines that no amount of anti-aging cream will erase. Rather than anti-aging, what about graceful surrender to each new phase of our lives! Perhaps you, like me pine for signs of that sassy, youthful body that used to attract its share of whistles. It’s hard not to judge the “me” I see now because that judgment became a lifelong habit. The war with my body started once we rushed to buy panty girdles to flatten our teenage stomachs. When Miss Twiggy, the

thinnest waif you ever saw hit the magazine covers in the 1960s, we were all in trouble! Wholesome was out – stick thin was in. I’ve been beating myself up about my body ever since. As my birthday approaches, I’ve decided that the only way to win this war with my body is to make peace with it. How, you ask? By giving it what it most desires. 1. My health – my top consideration. When my body shouts at me through nagging or acute pain, I listen and take some kind of appropriate action. When I need the doctor, chiropractor or acupuncturist, I make an appointment. I also take time to explore the emotional and/or mental roots that may have triggered my physical aggravation. 2. My fitness level – it took me many months of participating in deep water

18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I February • 2018

aqua size classes before I got into the habit of going at least once a week. Now I hate to miss because it has given me back muscle control, flexibility, and my slim waist. I walk and take the stairs whenever possible, and I am gradually adding a bit of yoga to my fitness regime. 3. My food protocol – gone are the days when I scarfed down a whole bag of Old Dutch Ripple Chips and the accompanying dill pickle dip. My daily ration of sweets and sugar has shrunk dramatically – replaced with veggies and greens. I love my bread, but that, too has become limited. 4. My looks – I’m convinced that my smile and the sparkle in my eyes do more for my looks than fancy lotions and potions. There are so many cancer-causing, unpronounceable ingredients in even the top cosmetics that I have resorted to making my own creams with natural substances that enrich my skin.

I choose comfort first, then style when shopping for clothes and shoes. 5. My lifestyle – these days I relish my “me” time. I work at a slower pace, and I take more breaks. Oddly enough, I get more done with less stress. Best of all, I actively seek and find moments of joy throughout my day. Changing lifelong patterns has not been easy, but my body is starting to reward me for those efforts. These sacred vessels we call bodies respond beautifully when we love them as much as they love us. What will you do today to love your body? When Cinnamon Buns

are Love My Mother was a busy farm wife with four children. But no matter how busy she was, she always had time to make us cinnamon buns. Gooey, sticky cinnamon buns, still-warm from the oven when we came home from school. To me, my mother’s cinnamon buns were synonymous for her love. Little did I suspect, these tantalizing treats from my childhood were actually programming my subconscious and sabotaging my hope of successfully losing weight as an adult. Over 90% of people fail on their diets, and over 90% of those who lose weight gain it back. There are reasons for this that extend far beyond a lack of willpower. Why traditional diets fail Your typical diet consists of two components: reducing calories and increasing exercise. When you reduce calories, the body thinks it is starving and the instinct to survive kicks in. This leads you to crave food or send you on a binge, causing you to stock up while food is available. Stress will also create the same response because it creates the same chemicals in the body as starvation.

Sometimes people can lose weight using sheer willpower, but approximately 10% of who we are and what we do is in the conscious mind. Willpower is in this 10%. That leaves 90% in the subconscious mind. This includes childhood programs, triggers, limiting beliefs, and so on. Willpower is easily overridden by the 90% of the programming in the subconscious! • You are battling the instinct to survive • Stress will cause you to crave and binge • The subconscious will sabotage your willpower My Journey I’ve tried countless diets. I’ve also lost hundreds of pounds—which I always gained back. In my late 30s, I experienced an emotional trauma, and in the following years I gained over a hundred pounds. I felt uncomfortable in my own skin, and my self-esteem had never been lower. This while working full-time and with three young boys at home. Physically—and mentally—I crashed. During my year off from work, I was introduced to EFT-Tapping. I worked with an EFT practitioner for a year and I began

to de-stress my life. I felt less stressed, and I lost 80 pounds that year, without a deprivation diet or any exercise! EFT-Tapping EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, also known as Tapping. EFT combines talk therapy and acupuncture without the needles. It uses a gentle tapping with the fingertips on the body’s energy meridians to release negative emotions trapped in the body. Clinical trials have shown that EFT-Tapping is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional stress. Once the stress is reduced, the body can often rebalance and heal itself. EFT-Tapping works at three levels: 1. De-stressing: The reason why EFTTapping works so well for weight loss is because it is a de-stresser.

2. Eliminating triggers called “Hebb’s Law”: When an emotion and a thought or action happen at the same time, the neurological pathways in the brain become wired together. Hence why my mother’s cinnamon buns meant love to me. 3. Working with patterns in the subconscious that control and sabotage behaviors: You will ultimately come to realize that your issues with eating have little to do with food, and everything to do with your thoughts, emotions and beliefs about self. EFT-Tapping helped me to take back control of my body, and change my life. Patricia Gibb, B.Sc.
