Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes
Following Your Heart, Making a Difference In 2008, I turned my life upside down. I took a year leave from my JOB, booked a trip to Australia and turned 50. I knew in my heart that I needed to make big changes, to be able to move away from the life I had been living. I wanted more out of life, but had no idea how to do it. I dug deep and decided that I needed to follow my heart and not get in my own way. My heart has always been about bringing people together. Parties, ladies nights, martini parties and family events. But after hundreds of hours of peeling away my pain and protective coating in personal development courses, I knew it had to do more with empowering women. Blog
At the beginning it started with a blog, that no one read, but it helped me. I wrote about turning 50, how I felt disconnected and was searching for answers. And then I started a meetup group, which is still running with over 500 women and over 290 events . Starting the tradeshows was a huge leap. I had never organized one before, so to say I had some fears, would be an understandment. I took one step at a time, going to every networking group and event I could to meet potential vendors. I visualized the lineup of women, waiting to get in my tradeshow. I saw the laughing faces and it started to meld in my mind as not just an event, but an experience. An experience of inspiration and friendship.
Bonnie Jean McAllister and Me (Dianna Bowes) at the 2016 Tradeshow at the River Cree.
Many things have changed over the years, the venues, the vendors, but the dream has always been the same. It was always about making a difference. Giving women an experience, a welcoming place to join hands with other women and if nothing else, an opportunity to connect with their friends and family. The tradeshow is way more than just shopping, we have workshops, speakers and support local charities. It is a party...with martinis...how about that? And of course a theme “Flashback to the 80’s” So pick up the phone...I know who does that anymore? Or text if that makes you feel better, and invite someone you know to come out for a day of fun. Reach out... follow your heart. I did, and look what happened. Dianna Bowes is the creative director of Fabulous@50 and editor of Be Fabulous! CLICK HERE to read more blogs.

Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
Change ONE Thing I heard a statistic that said as our life expectancy grows, so does the amount of time that our bodies spend in decline. It’s a dim prospect to know that so many of us could live to be 90 but spend the last 20 years wishing we had taken better care of ourselves. Making a difference means that we must take better care of ourselves, and since this column is all about food, let’s look at that. We’ve seen a variety of diet trends intent to change how people think about food in the last 20 years. These shifts (some of which are based on science and some that aren’t) have contributed to more changes, as The Canada Food Guide is undergoing a major overhaul that will result in more focus on plant based foods and less on meat and dairy. Will the American
Food Pyramid change too? And what’s right? What foods fuel our bodies in the right way? There is no easy answer to that, despite the words that might be coming to mind for you right now. The rules change all the time. We know that certain health conditions can be improved with diet, sure, but people don’t just run on food. They live within complicated, busy environments, and have things like stress, poor sleep habits, sedentary lifestyles, and competing priorities that impact their health. I admit that I am better about managing my food than I am about exercise. I manage my career better than my activity levels. I push myself to exercise, and I have tried loads of different classes, bought equipment, sold equipment…you know the drill, right? An exercise therapist encouraged me to just keep trying different things to

find the one that I really enjoy. This was a sneaky way to keep my body moving, but I have found a couple of new things recently, so it seems like he is on to something with that kind of advice! • I like to walk, and I set a brisk pace with Bonnie Dundee, my old regimental march, playing in my walking app. This gets me moving at about 10 kms per hour, which is just about fast enough to avoid the bears in the neighbourhood around me. • I like doing 50 reps with a 10lb kettleball when I take a break from my computer, and I do them four times a day. Another change I made is to stop drinking diet pop. It doesn’t offer me any health value, and it’s expensive, so I’ve shifted to making fancy water, like this: • Small handful of mint leaves, roughly chopped, and placed in the bottom of a two-litre jug
FAN FEEDBACK Question? How do you make a difference? Debra: I have been making my bed, decluttering, donating, making meals and lunches. Allowing other drivers in. Vicki: I am making a difference by decluttering and donating. Also spending more me time. Jacqueline: I am making a difference volunteering with local charities and being the best that I can be. Loretta: Volunteering, charity work, decluttering/donating, mentoring. Junita: I make a difference by giving compliments and sharing businesses for others and taking care of me to have more energy to offer the world
• Juice of two lemons, and then throw the lemon rind in the jug for added flavour • Optional: peel 1-2 inches of fresh ginger, chop it up and add it to your water (or use preserved ginger) • Fill jug with water and let it sit in the fridge for a half hour before drinking. Finish drinking within 24 hours. Tea with Sue Paulson
Where, Oh Where Have the Old Folks Gone? Many of us past 50 and 60 have parents and other relatives and friends in the elderly category – age 79 and up. I count myself fortunate to have at least nine of them still in my life – ranging in age from 86 – 100. Some are still in their own homes; some have opted for assisted living facilities. I love “old” people – always have. So I find myself particularly sensitive to their lives in their final years. What I’ve learned is that regardless of their circumstances, none want to feel a “burden” to their children, nor do they want to feel useless. I remember my grandmother being so mad that her body wouldn’t cooperate in her 80s. She said, “Inside I don’t feel any different than when I was 18.” She also remarked, “Those seniors’ benefits aren’t worth getting old for.” With so many more seniors living to ripe old age and the Boomers inevitably heading toward that elderly category, govern-
ments and builders have responded with a facilities model that encompasses independent living through to long term care either in one building or in close proximity. These are not like the “Old Folks Homes” of old. Most are very modern, clean, and spacious and are complete with a variety of recreational activities. They house anywhere from 60 – 200 residents. Sons and daughters touring these facilities feel pretty good about their parents moving into these lodges. On the surface, all seems good – no cooking, no cleaning, and nothing but fun to occupy one’s time. Two of my relatives (both widows) chose to move from their homes in their 80s and live in “assisted living”. While the dream of providing our elderly with quality of life in their “golden years” is a good one, what I see happening is an institutional reality where my relatives don’t feel at home.
8 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I September • 2017
One of them said, “Well I guess this is where I have to live, but it doesn’t feel like my home.” Unlike most of us who are surrounded by a variety of ages, they move to a place filled with strangers and spend day after day with other old people whom they may or may not get along with. If they have no relatives living close by, they depend on the kindness of those in the community to provide some kind of relief from the day-to-day tedium. They have few opportunities to contribute or feel useful. I travel two hours to one relative and five hours to the other. In the short time I’m there, they can escape their daily life. I do what I can, which is mostly to listen.
If you don’t have any elderly in your life, consider volunteering as a visitor or a driver. Help them run their errands and get them telling you their stories – it’s fascinating to hear about the lives that people have lived. When our elderly become invisible, our society loses their history and their wisdom. Let’s do what we can to stop that from happening. Speaker and author, Sue Paulson inspires others to claim and love their magnificence. Her third book, “Magnificent Misery – From Adversity to Ecstasy” is available at Audrey’s and Ascendant Books in Edmonton or through Amazon. To book Sue for your next event, email her at sue@suepaulson.com or check out her website: www.suepaulson.com
I hear lots of complaints – mostly about the food. Now I know how much I look forward to my next meal. Frozen chicken nuggets, fish sticks and wieners are not in my freezer, and yet that’s pretty common fare for supper in the places I know about. Very little food is cooked on site. Based on the food quality alone, I ‘m not sure I want to live in that kind of place. Maybe a Granny Nanny who can cook? So what can we do for these older relations to make a positive difference in their lives? They are at a vulnerable stage, yet it’s important they maintain as much independence and dignity as possible. The residents won’t complain to administration about anything as important as the quality of the food – they’re too afraid of getting kicked out. It’s up to us to be their voices. On a personal level, they all want some of our undivided attention. Just a drive in the country can provide a welcome change. I recently took one aunt on a road trip. She stayed at my place as part of the adventure and puttered and tidied about the house to her heart’s content. CLICK ON ADS OR LINKS • Interactive eMagazine • 9

Making a Difference What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life?
my parents has taught me to always give back to the community and to believe that I can do anything I set my mind to.
I am looking forward to fulfilling many dreams and goals such as, continuing with public speaking; to become an accredited speaker with Toastmasters and completing my 3rd marathon while raising funds for Team Diabetes. All while inspiring other women to take their steps necessary to reach their goals. “It is never too late!”
I believe that getting married and having my first child at the age of sixteen; then getting divorced, remarried, having three other children and overcoming the challenge of living many years in an unhealthy relationship with an excessive alcoholic, has given me the gift of resilience and has taught me to be grateful for everything I have.
How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it?
What would you consider to be your top three talents/skills?
Having had a strong foundation throughout my childhood; the life and passing of
I feel as though my top three skills are to inspire, motivate, and encourage other people.
10 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I September • 2017
If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? One thing that has made a big difference in my life would have to be starting my journey with Toastmasters. It has given me the skills to be a better leader and a stronger speaker. It has given me the courage to be able to pursue my goal of becoming an accredited speaker. When life knocks you down, what lifts you up? When life knocks me down; listening to music while walking or running and talking to God lifts me up. Not to mention seeing my children and grandchildren always puts the biggest smile on my face. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? I would like younger women to know that what makes a person beautiful is what’s on the inside; their heart. Giving your time to a person or a cause without wanting or
expecting in return, to have a giving and pure heart for all people is what makes you truly beautiful. You can have the best clothes, hair, nails and makeup but if you don’t have a tender giving heart, this is all meaningless.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi
SHHHH! IT’S OUR LITTLE SECRET People feel happier when they are doing things that have a positive impact on other people. That’s because we all have a basic need to believe that we are making a difference in some way. But let’s be honest - we live crazy busy lives juggling multiple things day in and day out. Sometimes it seems that there are no spare moments in the day. No matter how much we might want to make a contribution, the idea of adding another commitment seems somewhat impossible. Too often we focus on making a big contribution like volunteering for a charity. Of course large efforts like that are wonderful if you are able to make the commitment; however, we shouldn’t underestimate the small things that also can have an impact. Think about little ways you could make a difference for others on a daily basis – do a small act of kindness, send thank you notes, smile more. While these might seem insignificant, small actions create a positive atmosphere.
They increase feelings of respect, appreciation and gratitude. When we leave people with a happy feeling, they are more likely to pass it along to someone else. It’s a great place to start. If you are someone who already makes practicing kindness to others a part of your day, then perhaps it’s time to raise the bar. My challenge to you is to do an anonymous act of kindness. No expectation of, or opportunity for, acknowledgement or thanks. Just create a silent little pact between you and the universe that you are doing your part. You see sometimes our ego gets too involved in our gestures of kindness. We see that happening when people feel the need to post on social media what they have done, or make a point of telling their friends.
14 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I September • 2017
When there is a “look at me” aspect to making a difference, it takes away a little of the power of the action. Sure the motivation for doing so might just be seeking a little validation that you are indeed making a difference, but the truth is you simply need to trust that you are. Scientists believe that altruism, or the unselfish regard for the welfare of others, is actually hard wired into our brains. Perhaps we have just forgotten that part of our selves. There are tons of ways that you can anonymously make a difference in the world, one kind act at a time. Here are some ideas: • shovel someone’s walk or driveway, or cut the grass, when they are not home
We LOVE
• leave a gift card in a mailbox • plug some parking meters • post a positive sticky note in an elevator • phone the manager of a restaurant to praise a server • leave a copy of a great book on the bus or a bench • give a lottery ticket to a stranger • drop off flowers on a doorstep Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in.
