Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes

In her speech at the Golden Globe awards last week, Oprah spoke about the current stage that affects women of many cultures, geography, race, religion, politics or in workplaces.” There was one part of her speech that got everyone riled up. I loved it! She said: So I want all the girls watching here to know that a new day is on the horizon... and, when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say Me Too again.” Women have been affected personally and in business by being pushed aside or being abused by powerful people. And yes, sometimes people knew what was going on, yet did nothing. Both men and other women stood aside and said nothing. It is time to step forward and protect those who may feel they can’t protect themselves. Your friends and family need your spirit, your shield. Be one of those magnificent women Oprah talks about. I am always shocked when I hear of how many women and men have been abused. Thank goodness for the people

YOU ARE NOT ALONE...

out there who are helping to heal the wounded. Women like Glori Meldrum, who had set up the Be Brave Ranch for sexually abused children in the Edmonton area. Women like Oprah have huge influence in the world, but so do you and I. I think it is powerful that we are all talking about sexual abuse, but we need to stop looking the other way. This issue is affecting our friends, family and community. If you feel you need someone to talk to about something that may have happened to you, there are many groups, therapists and agencies that are available to you. Women’s groups like Bridgitte Lessard’s - Women Talk, Jo Dibblee’s – Frock Off Movement and Fabulous@50 of course are just a few. Women in these groups have said “Me too” and are sharing their stories with other women. There are amazing books to be shared, written by Jo Dibblee, Brenda Hammond, Debra Kinisky, and my book “The Fabulous@50 Re-Experience” that are about women who have suffered and have risen to be powerful women. All these books are available on Amazon.ca. There is hope and you are not alone. Dianna Bowes is the creative director of Fabulous@50 and editor of Be Fabulous! CLICK HERE to read more blogs.

Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson

Swiss Steak A Cold Weather Warm Your Toes Supper

I normally focus on dishes that are really simple for our Be Fabulous readers, and although the ingredient list looks long this is an easy dish because you can substitute veggies with whatever is in your pantry, plus you can speed up cooking by using a high quality cut of meat (though when it comes to stew, using an inexpensive cut that you tenderize by cooking is best for your budget). This is a wonderful dish for sharing with friends, or you can freeze individual portions for quick suppers through the week. Ingredients 4 Tbsp cooking oil or bacon drippings 2 pounds round or chuck steak cut into one to one and a half inch squares 1 large onion, diced

2 stalks of celery, sliced in half inch pieces 2 carrots, sliced and cut into one inch pieces 3 cloves whole or crushed garlic 1 can of crushed tomatoes 1 can of whole stewed tomatoes 2 cups beef stock 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp brown sugar 2 bay leaves 2 tsp dried thyme or 2 tsp seasonings Focaccia blend from Epicure (or whatever you like) 2 tsp salt (divided) 1½ tsp pepper (divided) 1 tsp paprika

6 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2018

Method 1. You will see other recipes that ask you to tenderize the steak. This is not necessary when you prepare in this method, in my experience. 2. Heat 2-4 tsps oil in a pan. 3. Dip meat lightly in 1 cup of flour seasoned with one teaspoon each of salt, pepper, and paprika. 4. Brown meat lightly on each side, and set aside on a plate. 5. Add onions and celery (use an extra plop of oil if needed) to the pot, and allow to soften 5 minutes or so. 6. Add garlic, and all remaining ingredients to the pot. Stir to combine. 7. Return the steak to the pot and make sure that your sauce coats it nicely. Add another tin of tomatoes or additional stock if needed. 8. You can slow cook this in a big saucepan on your stove for 1 ½ - 2 hours, or place everything in a pre-heated slow cooker.

Stir frequently since tomatoes will sometimes stick. Slow cook on high for 1 ½ hours, or on low for 4 hours. Quickly cool and then taste a piece of meat so you don’t overcook it. 10. Serve your Swiss Steak over garlic mashed potatoes, or rice, or alongside some fresh hot biscuits. **I did not use a pressure cooker for this recipe, although I have done so for 4 pounds of beef for 30 minutes, however, the tomatoes make this dish very thick and they may stick on the bottom of the pot and scorch, or they can boil up and clog the valve giving no outlet for the pressure to be released. Food Stories with Loretta Friedrich

Kozak Family Tribe We are a very large group of descendants from my dad’s parents, Trofim and Anastasia Kozak, who have annually gathered to celebrate our heritage and wealth of family since even before I was born. Originally the clan descended upon my Baba and Dido’s house on Christmas Eve but once our family became much too big for their or anyone else’s home, we eventually came to meet at Birch Bay Ranch just east of Sherwood Park. The date we now gather coincides with Ukrainian Christmas, on the first Saturday of January. This year we met on January 6 which also so happened to be Ukrainian Christmas Eve. The attendance has dwindled in recent years since a few folks have moved away. Some are snowbirds or others can’t attend due to holiday winter break or work reasons. We’ve also have had to accept the passing of most of the elders who were “the originals” of my grandparent’s 15 children. (My dad passed away in 1999.) No matter what, we all know that there still is an open invitation to come be part

of the fun, fellowship and feasting... and feasting it is to be sure! We who are the younger folk bring salad, vegetable dishes and other foods to prop up the selections. (This year I brought a pasta salad that you’ll find included in this article.) You can be sure though that the expected delicious Ukrainian feast foods are available to consume: nalysnyky, pyrohy, holubtsi, nachynka, kolbassa and more. Let’s just say they’re not the lightest foods around but boy do they remind me of comfort, pleasure, and ties to the old country! The food doesn’t just stand on its own to provide nourishment at this gathering. It’s also about the conversations, the laughter, and the musical selections that at least a few relatives will sing... including the youngest of them all. Truthfully, it has been hard to fully participate in the joviality since my dad passed on a number of years ago. It is hard not to miss the much-loved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son who was the main chief organizer of the event and hilarious

Asian-inspired Vegetable

Pasta Salad Let the flavors of this dish dance across your tongue to truly satisfy your taste buds. Pause to note hints of sweet, salty and umami in every mouthful. Fresh vegetables compliment the chewy and smooth texture of the pasta providing heaps of nutrition. This is sure to be a pasta salad happily consumed with a group of family or friends. Makes 8 to 10 servings • 500 g pasta • Garlic salt, pinch • Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), drizzle • 225 g (about 1 ½ cups) fresh or thawed frozen peas • 2 to 3 large carrots, chopped • 2 to 3 green onions, chopped • 2 large sweet red peppers, deseeded, chopped • 1 large English cucumber, chopped

• 45 to 50 ml toasted sesame oil, divided • 50 ml organic rice vinegar •50 ml natural soy sauce alternative (like Bragg’s) Add a pinch of garlic salt and a drizzle of EVOO to a large pot of water and heat boiling point. Add pasta, stir, and cook according to directions. Meanwhile, chop carrots, sweet red peppers, cucumber, and green onions. Set aside. When the pasta has cooked, drain, place in large mixing bowl, and toss with 15 ml of toasted sesame oil. Stir in the peas, carrots and green onions. Let the pasta mixture rest for 5 minutes to slightly soften these vegetables. Mix in the rice vinegar, natural soy sauce alternative, and the remaining toasted sesame oil. Finally, stir to combine the sweet red peppers and cucumbers. You may wish to serve immediately (it’ll be warm) or refrigerate for 2 hours or more to eat cold.

Kozak...continued

MC for the program we enjoyed postmeal; however, there are always the many hugs and at least a story or two that is shared about my dad to keep me coming back. Do you have a family gathering or one with friends that offer more than just the foodstuffs to draw you there? What is it that has you travel distances or walk those few blocks to do so? Maybe it’s annual gathering or a regular meeting that offers you a sense of belonging and community. No matter what, where, or when it is, I encourage you to gather with those who lift

you up and where you can share yourself in order to nourish physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational health for all who are present. I am grateful I continue to make the choice to do so, however hard it is sometimes. I’m so glad I can be with my Kozak Family tribe at our annual reunion. Jo Dibblee: Frocking Remarkable What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? At fifty-six I have a very different view of life. I am more aware of the fleeting nature of life. And for this reason, I am committed to being the change. I am at my core a disrupter, and my goal is to make an impact every day in some way. To stand with those who are ready and to give a hand up to those who need support. There are so many women who, due to fear, have chosen to live a safe, settled life. I am here to shake things up and say HELL NO! To stir the pot and create friction to disrupt good enough and move the needle to FROCKING remarkable! We, you and I, are here to make the world a better place to create ripples of change - for some, it may be a tsunami of change, and it starts with challenging status quo and asking why. How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? It’s a funny thing about hardship - growing up without necessities made me resilient, observant and grateful. At times it made me fearful and in true transparency, at times, sadly I was resentful, but in the end, it made me who I am. I would not wish the trauma and terror of being in hiding for 35 years on anyone and yet there are so many pearls of wisdom and moments of humanity that happened along the way. If not for being a witness in hiding I would never have written Frock Off and would not be living this blessed life. The irony never escapes me that the most terrible and challenging

parts of my life helped me discover my real purpose - my why. Why I was born to serve others. In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? I live and practice the principle that “to whom much is given must is expected”… and today I am free to live, love and run my business as I see fit… I can help others in a way I never thought possible. The best part of all is now I can put my money where my mouth is and give back. We support various causes, Because I Am A Girl, Little Warriors, and shelters, as well as other grassroots movements and my goal, is to be able to contribute 30K a year to a variety of not-for-profits.

Jo snorkeling in Mexico.

How have business and/or personal relationships shaped your life? Relationships are EVERYTHING to me! To me, the quality of life or business is not measured by how many people one knows but rather how deeply connected they are. I would not be where I am today if not for understanding this. I value each relationship and when I with another I am fully present nothing else will do! Blessed with many people in my life, I take nothing for granted each person brings their blessings to the table whether in life, love, or business. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? I live near the ocean, and for me, that is soul-filling and life-affirming. The sound of the water crashing or lapping the shoreline is nothing short of healing. It is ever-changing, and every day there is something new to see. I do my best to walk the beach every day not doing so feels like I am squandering the deliciousness life offers.

What makes you laugh? Children’s laughter and animals followed by great romantic comedies. During the years I was in hiding, I used dark humor to cope - Humor has been my lifesaver. Add in a little irony, and I am off to the races. Laughter and love the best life has to offer. ,o..

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi

When Did Friend Become a Verb? In the age of social media, what does it really mean to be someone’s friend? In the hyper busy world that we live, carrying on relationships in the virtual world seems like an easy solution to staying connected to people. With time in short supply, instead of actually getting together, we can share photos of what’s new in our lives or choose some emoji to capture our reaction to events happening in someone else’s life. In our continual time crunch, it seems so much simpler to friend someone rather than be a friend. Social Media

Sadly, technology and social media has let us off the hook when it comes to the real work of friendship. With all of our posting and sharing and commenting, we create a false sense of relationship. There’s a difference between scrolling through Facebook and actually having a friendship. Somehow social media has convinced us that it’s easy to be connected to other people. But true friendships aren’t easy. They re-

quire energy and effort and nurturing, and yes sometimes even sacrifice. Based on decades of research, anthropologist Robin Dunbar believes that humans can really only maintain stable social relationships with about 150 people, fifteen of which would be close friends and five who would be intimate ones. The rest would fall into groups like acquaintances, colleagues, neighbours and family. Real World

So while you might have 587 Facebook friends, the Dunbar number suggests that you can’t actually develop meaningful relationships with them. Yet we continually give our time to them on social media and that is the real problem. When we spend our precious time hanging out with our so-called friends on social media, we limit the amount of time we have to actually devote to our real world friends. How often have you said, “Let’s get together,” and then it never happens? Do you send a quick text message rather than make the time for a phone call?

12 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2018

The depth of our friendships depends on shared experiences. That doesn’t mean that we all have watched the same cute kitty video. Real world friends need in person experiences in order to thrive and that requires time and effort. Even though Facebook has certainly put a warped spin on friendship, I’m not suggesting that you need to abandon social media. Instead perhaps you can trade some of the time you spend there to create a more meaningful experience. Pick up the phone and call. Make a date for coffee and keep it. Share photos in person. Tell someone how you feel with words not icons. Laugh together. Cry together. Hug. Your friends will appreciate it. Connections For Life The fast pace and non stop ‘busyness’ that seem to be a new way of life for everyone these days is coming at a steep price. Stress, exhaustion, loneliness and social isolation are common complaints now for many. Often even more so in midlife, where the many significant and inevitable life transitions we go through add to the problem. And the lack of meaningful social ties and friendships have been proven to affect our health and happiness. Upon doing some of my own research on this subject, the data was overwhelming, all pointing in the same direction. In a report called Social Relationships and Health: A Flashpoint for Health Policy, the following was stated ‘Social support refers to the emotionally sustaining qualities of relationships (e.g., a sense that one is loved, cared for, and listened to). Hundreds of studies establish that social support benefits mental and physical health.

Social support may have indirect effects on health through enhanced mental health, by reducing the impact of stress, or by fostering a sense of meaning and purpose in life’. The same report went on to say ‘Many types of scientific evidence show that involvement in social relationships benefits health. The most striking evidence comes from prospective studies of mortality across industrialized nations. These studies consistently show that individuals with the lowest level of involvement in social relationships are more likely to die than those with greater involvement. For example, one study showed that the risk of death among men and women with the fewest social ties was more than twice as high as the risk for adults with the most social ties. Moreover, this finding held even when socioeconomic status, health behaviors, and other variables that might influence mortality, were taken into account.

14 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2018

Social ties also reduce mortality risk among adults with documented medical conditions. For instance, a 2001 study found that, among adults with coronary artery disease, the socially isolated had a risk of subsequent cardiac death 2.4 times greater than their more socially connected peers.’ Everywhere we look, we are being told by the experts that having and maintaining those meaningful family ties and friendships/connections in our lives makes all the difference to a happy, healthy and successful life. There are also many excellent recent TedTalks about the deep importance of social connections and friendships affecting our happiness and longevity. Psychiatrist Robert Waldinger said as much in his TedTalk: What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness. Waldinger is the director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest and most complete studies of adult life ever conducted. Waldinger described some of the secrets to happiness revealed by the study in a recent TED talk. Unfortunatley they only looked at men in this harvard study (and I wondered why) but its results are equally applicable to women. The study followed two cohorts of white men for 75 years, starting in 1938: The researchers surveyed the men about their lives (including the quality of their marriages, job satisfaction, and social activities) every two years and monitored their physical health (including chest X-rays, blood tests, urine tests, and echocardiograms) every five years. They came away with one major finding: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. In his TED Talk, Waldinger pointed out three key lessons about happiness:

1. Close relationships The men in both groups of the Harvard study who reported being closer to their family, friends, or community tended to be happier and healthier than their less social counterparts. They also tended to live longer. By comparison, people who said they were lonelier reported feeling less happy. They also had worse physical and mental health, as defined above. A 2014 review of dozens of studies published in the journal Social and Personality Psychology Compass suggests that loneliness can get in the way of mental functioning, sleep, and well-being, which in turn increases the risk of illness and death. 2. Quality (not quantity) of relationships It’s not just being in a relationship that matters. Married couples who said they argued constantly and had low affection for one another (which study authors defined as “high-conflict marriages”) were actually less happy than people who weren’t married at all, the Harvard study found. However, the effect of relationship quality seems to depend somewhat on age. A 2015 study published in the journal Psychology and Aging that followed people for 30 years found that the number of relationships people had was, in fact, more important for people in their 20s, but the quality of relationships had a bigger effect on social and psychological well being when people were in their 30s. 3. Stable, supportive marriages Being socially connected to others isn’t just good for our physical health. It also helps stave off mental decline. People who were married without having divorced, separating, or having “serious problems” until age 50 performed better on memory tests later in life than those who weren’t, the Harvard study found.

CLICK ON ADS OR LINKS • Interactive eMagazine • 15

And other research backs this up. A 2013 study in the journal PLOS ONE found that marriage, among other factors, was linked to a lower risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Strong Relationships

All of this suggests that strong relationships are critical to our health. Society places a lot of emphasis on wealth and “leaning in” to our work, Waldinger said. “But over and over, over these 75 years, our study has shown that the people who fared the best were the people who leaned in to relationships, with family, with friends, with community.” As well, Canadian psychologist and author Susan Pinker found the same thing as she reported in her TedTalk: The secret to living longer may be your social life. She tells us that the Italian island of Sardinia has more than six times as many centenarians as the mainland and ten times as many as North America. Why? According to Pinker, it’s not a sunny disposition or a low-fat, gluten-free diet

that keeps the islanders healthy -- it’s their emphasis on close personal relationships and face-to-face interactions. And a few quotes from one of Pinker’s books say it all “Few see looking after others as therapeutic for the person who does the caretaking, or consider community involvement as therapeutic as drugs. Yet there is mounting evidence that a rich network of face-to-face relationships creates a biological force field against disease.” - Susan Pinker, The Village Effect: How Face-to-Face Contact Can Make Us Healthier, Happier, and Smarter So what does it all mean?

Very simply - keep up those connections, friendships and ties. And if you don’t have them, make them. Make the effort, its never too late, and the quality of the rest of your life could very well depend on it.
