Sweet Talk

We all know the premise behind any good story, right? It’s the foundation for the greatest movies ever made. First, there’s some sort of challenge. Our main character struggles in some way, whether it’s romantically, financially, socially or some combination of these. Then their luck takes a turn for the better… we see the scales tipping in their favour and we begin to root for their success. As their situation improves, you can almost feel an optimistic lightness in the room as things come together for these characters who’ve struggled so doggedly to achieve their dreams. Then, right on cue, there’s another dip in the road. This time though, the stakes are higher and there’s so much more to lose…and we can’t help but wonder if our (now beloved) characters have the strength to conquer this latest setback. It’s touch and go…but ultimately, tenacity and determination save the day. Our (now) heroes get the guy/girl/health/ wealth/power/success they sought and we’re left with the satisfaction of a happy ending and a reminder that hard work and persistence can ultimately make our dreams come true. But this is the work of fiction. Or, is it?? If you have the desire to accomplish great things, you need act in a way that anticipates that the dream will become your reality… and to not only plan for it but to believe in it. The surest way not to fail is to be determined to succeed!

Our lives, as with any great movie script, have a built-in opportunity for growth and the luxury of redirection. Just because you can’t imagine yourself achieving your goal doesn’t mean it’s unattainable. Fourth Trade Show

As I reflect back, I never could have imagined I’d be preparing for my fourth tradeshow…and yet, here it is. Had I not listened to my gut and trusted in my abilities, I would have missed so much…and I would have missed meeting so many wonderful people…people who have encouraged me to continue down this path and have helped to show me the way to go forward. Reaching one’s goals requires taking risks…and we all know that taking risks requires courage. Remind yourself every day that courage is a resistance to fear… it is the mastery of fear…not the absence of it. Fear is a part of the process. The prize for overcoming it is invaluable…the pride and satisfaction is priceless. Follow your heart. Trust in yourself to make your dream your reality. Demanding or Looking Fabulous at 50

Darling Diva? Other times we just mean she’s really into fashion, style, music, her dog in her purse and other finer things in life but somehow she is fussy about it; that it has to be “just so” in order for her to be happy. Wisegeek describes a diva as a woman who is so artistically talented that she has an inflated opinion about herself. www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-diva. htm We’ve heard e-talk report that Jennifer Lopez is a diva because she insists her dressing room is decorated in only white to include only white flowers, white linens and white carpet. Mariah Carey describes a diva in her 2009 interview with Larry King Live as “a talented woman who knows what she wants and goes after it.”

••• Pop culture describes a diva as a woman with such high expectations that she is difficult to please. ••• Webster’s dictionary, which we’d all agree is the non-pop culture definition, states that a diva refers to a talented female opera singer. Diva is an Italian word with the root meaning “god like” or “divine”. Diva then refers to a woman so talented that her voice is that of an angel. Releasing your inner diva then could mean that in each of us we all have a superior talent to sing? No. I don’t think so. But I would agree that deep in our hearts, there is a woman who longs for some reverence of how angelic she is. That she is tender, delicate and fragile like that of an angel’s 6 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

Often times we flippantly state “she’s such a Diva!” and the connotation is somewhat negative as though she is too much about herself and not about other people. wings. Perhaps the reality of our lives buries those feminine traits because life is tough. We are working single mothers, living in an abusive relationship, leader of a team, CEO of a multi-million dollar company or a new mom trying to catch up on her sleep. Maybe “release” means for us to give ourselves permission to not feel guilty about pampering ourselves? Instead of washing one more floor, making one more meal or driving to one more soccer game maybe we could just put our feet up and relax! Some of you have figured this out and moved past the guilt. So that’s my message to you today. Take some time for self-care. Release your inner diva by acknowledging all the amazing things you do in a day for others whether at work or home. Acknowledge you are a talented woman in your own way.

••• Release your inner diva by taking the time to just sit, meditate, be grateful and rejuvenate your soul. ••• Be a Diva that is darlin’ not demanding. Fifty Shades and Sex After 50 After 30 weeks on the bestseller list, I continue to be awestruck by the popularity of E. L. James’ trilogy about kinky sex -- women are voting with their wallets for a fresh and unorthodox sexuality, or at least erotica. And many of these Fifty Shades readers are midlife women. Sex is dead for women past 50? I don’t think so. Perhaps the problem is the sex on the menu. Mommy vs Granny Porn

One woman, a home-bound widow, was eager to get her hands on a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. She called a cousin who often ran errands for her, and asked if the she would buy a copy. The cousin was in her 60s and had no idea why her older cousin would want it, having heard it was a smutty “sex” book dealing with S&M. Two weeks later the widow called her cousin again to say, “Nevermind. My daughter-in-law bought it for me for my birthday.” As she turned 85, this woman could not put the book down, although she wasn’t sure what exactly a butt plug is or what one does with it. Fifty Shades has been called “mommy porn,” but perhaps we should call it “granny porn.” Erotic novels have been around for centuries. Lady Chatterley’s Lover or Fear of Flying on my mom’s nightstand comes to mind. But to me, as a Harvard-educated gynecologist, Fifty Shades of Grey taps into a new zeitgeist for women. 8 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

Do Your Hormones Need a Dose of Fifty?

If you don’t feel much when your husband flashes his love lights, you just might need a dose of Fifty Shades. What is it about this book that has caught fire with women across a broad spectrum of society and across generations? Why would nearly every woman I know, regardless of age, read the trilogy in two days? (OK, I have a few high-brow friends who haven’t read it, but honestly, I feel they’re missing out and might need an intervention.) Is it the “Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism, Masochism” (BDSM) on the page that’s compelling? Literary voyeurism has a long and checkered history. When did you read Lady Chatterley’s Lover? For me, tenth grade. Thrilling. We’ve Rewired to Stress Not Pleasure

My integrative medicine office provides a different lens from which to view the phenomenon of Fifty Shades. At least once per week, a female client will arrive, clutching her well-thumbed copy of the book. She confides, “Dr. Sara, I’d be into sex if my husband treated me like Christian treats Ana.” So, I pay attention. I believe women are saying that they want to be cherished. They want to be desired in a powerful way, and not just for their roasted chicken and skill at getting kids to soccer practice. The routine and ordinariness of life hijacks our sexual yearning.

Women are finally waking up to the fact that in our pursuit of gender equality, we’ve rewired our bodies and minds to stress, not pleasure. We hardly even recognize pleasure anymore. Yet Fifty Shades makes one point crystal clear: The libido of the North American woman is not dead. It was a bit fried from all the superwoman expectations, but perhaps the flick of a riding crop from handsome billionaire Christian Grey woke it up. Women can’t simultaneously be anxious and have an orgasm. After an orgasm, it’s nearly impossible to feel fear or depression. Fear and orgasm are a toggle switch; the two sides can’t be on at the same time. Pleasure and orgasm raise oxytocin, which is known to lower cortisol and amplify bonding.[2,3] Those are the neurohormonal resets that women desperately need, and it’s free.

A Few Final Reminders

Fabulous women who are over 50, are here to advocate, protest, and remind the younger generations that women have needs and we have the ability to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and set boundaries while exploring our deeper desires. What I like about Fifty Shades is that it’s deepening the discourse about sex and pleasure, which may lead to more pleasure in the bedroom, which is particularly wonderful for women in menopause because orgasm balances your hormones. In fact, orgasm and Fifty Shades might be the best natural hormone remedy you can find as a woman, and it’s without side effects. Orgasm and Fifty Shades rewire you to pleasure, not stress. Highly recommended! m Sara Gottfried, MD,integrative physician, author of the forthcoming book, The Hormone Cure, www.saragottfriedmd.com

Ms.

Play it Again,

Somerville

Vintage dreams came true for vocalist

A jazz tribute song for Sheri Somerville’s life-over-50 might aptly be titled, “Fine Lines and Fine Wines.” The internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter-actor turned Sommelier-barkeep, is anything but second-rate plonk. And she’d rather express the senescent beauty of age by living courageously than wasting time on cosmetic time-distortion tactics. “You can put all of the fancy face creams on yourself or have liposuction, but if you really want to feel young, alive, vital, then make a bold move. Do something that ignites your passion,” croons the 51-year-old owner of Somerville Wine and Cheese, a classy long and narrow restaurant-lounge in Edmonton’s evolving High-Street district (10723 124 Street). The hot spot’s design and vibe are decidedly modern, with distinct notes of romantic, charismatic and complex like Somerville, herself, and her cultured palette. After her 20-year marriage ended, Somerville decided to risk everything for an old, unrequited dream. While working as a jazz musician, back in the ’80s, in the dark, candlelit nightclubs of Toronto, New York, Paris and Hong Kong, the young, single actor-songstress thrived on the steady mystery and adventure of new places and new faces. “I was working at a club one night and suddenly had the thought that, ‘One day, 10 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

when I’m tired of traveling, and figure out where I want to live, wouldn’t it be amazing to own this place?’ ” Somerville shares, one Wednesday afternoon, cozied up to her bar, while sipping a glass of Prosecco. A decade later, now married and with kids, Somerville moved back home to Edmonton where she enjoyed family life and nurtured a dynamic performance career at the Citadel and Teatro la Quindicina. She even had parts written for her by the critically acclaimed director-playwright Stewart Lemoine. In 2005, she released her debut album, Crazy Love, an eclectic mix of her favourite jazz/folk covers. But, deep down, Somerville knew she wanted more, that life had other magic in store, if she would only step out of her groove and open to new possibility. “I divorced five years ago on very good terms, but I had to reconcile that if I’m ending this marriage with a very fine man then I better make good on my longings and promises to myself,” recalls Somerville. “I needed to live a bolder, more passionate, joyful life.” During this challenging time, she looked to her mother for inspiration. “I was approaching 50, and I thought, ‘What am I going to do?’ ’cause when my mom turned 50 my Dad died suddenly, and she went to university,” says Somerville, proudly. “Mom was a war bride who only got to Grade 11. So when dad died, she was grieving at night, being a student by day.”

And so, following her split, Somerville mortgaged her house, cashed in her RRSPs and converted an old machining shop on 124st Street into a trendy wine bar reminiscent of the dark, candle-lit cabarets of her exuberant past.

••• “It’s only money. Money is like manure. Spread it around and watch it make things grow,” she exclaims, evoking the spirit of Dolly Levy from the famous musical, Hello, Dolly! which she performed years ago at The Citadel. ••• “I took possession on September 1 and was jack-hammering through 38 feet of concrete on September 2,” she laughs. Somerville Wine and Cheese opened its doors on December 16, 2010, serving up a sophisticated, ever-changing list of boutique wines and spirits, and modern French cuisine made with fresh, local produce and wild game. “I figured I’ll learn on my feet. I trust myself and I absolutely trust other talented people,” says Somerville, who promptly hired her son, Jason Somerville-Knish, a Level-3 sommelier, as her wine director, and brought Chef Neil Chamberlain, formerly of Tzin, and Sommelier Tannis MacKinnon on board. She then honed her own palette and nose by attending the International Sommelier Guildu to get her own Level-1 distinction. These days, she’s a huge fan of Two Hounds wine from Australia, and a 2005 Negru di Purcari is among her current favourites. “It’s delicious. We love it,” says Somerville. “We have a beautiful list that has no junk

on it. No mass-produced big-box wines. Nothing that’s on a chain list, and our clients are coming here and trusting us.” When she’s not tending to her own home-grown tomatoes, racing around picking up fresh ingredients, meeting wine reps or sweeping her sleek shop floors, Somerville might kick back a moment to savour the fermented fruits of Love’s labour.

••• “This is so fun. I”m enjoying every moment of it. Hard work is good for you,” she says, turning the conversation tenderly back to her mother. ••• “Today my mom is 88 years old, and she still works three times a week for the love of it, at Grand McEwan as an English consultant. I will always work. Work is my free freedom. Even after I’m long out of here, I will always do something. And it’s never too late to get going with your dreams and big ideas.” m Jennifer Parks is a freelance writer based in Edmonton, AB. You can reach her by email at soulink@shaw.ca or 780.974.8401. Loving the Unlovable As we celebrate our ‘inner Divas’, that part of us that exudes the best of who we are, I started wondering how we can sustain those images and feelings. My inner Diva is strong, purposeful, successful, loving, compassionate, fun, gorgeous, sexy and just plain adorable. The feelings that accompany that are joy, love, peace and happiness. Hmm – a great place to be, but really, how much time in the day do I see myself that way and feel those great feelings? If I’m honest with myself, I don’t hang out there for very many minutes. I started to explore some reasons for not often feeling like my inner Diva ought to. There were two that came to mind. Learning Curve

First, I’m on a learning curve with a new business. Away from the office, I’m busy working with prospective clients to help them with their needs. I want everything to be perfect for them, so I’m afraid of screwing up. If I don’t get the sale, I wonder what I did wrong. Back in my office, I wrestle with my bouncy nature so I can effectively tend to the myriad of details that follow a sale. When I make a mistake, I try not to beat myself up, but I’m not always successful. After all, a Diva such as I should be perfect – right? Second, I’m on a recovery path from the cancer that knocked the stuffing out of 12 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

me last year. Despite the many gifts that have come from my cancer experience – an appreciation of the beauty in every moment, a svelte body that is healthy, sexy, and fifty pounds lighter than before, a new head of hair that’s curly and thick, a health plan and food program that is supporting my ongoing healing – I still fret about whether I’m taking good enough care of myself; I catch myself worrying about my body’s ability to stay healthy and cancer-free. Two solid reasons, but was there more? When I dug deeper, I discovered that the most important reason I don’t see my inner Diva too often relates to my Shadow self. This is the part of me that has become the dumping ground for all the negative experiences of my childhood and distant past. My shadow self is unloved and unlovable, fearful or even terrified, envious, jealous, not good enough, not pretty enough, too old, too bold, too shy, too self-absorbed – the list goes on. Shame, guilt and worry come right along for the ride. I believed that this part of me should be vigorously suppressed, fought or denied. Like the cartoons of my childhood, where the little angel appeared on one of my shoulders and the devil on the other, I was always caught in the struggle between the two – with either angel or devil winning over the other at any given moment.

In an amazing book called, The Tools, by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels, the authors talk about our shadow selves as the doorway to inner self-expression and inner authority. They explain that when we constantly rely on outside approval for validation (which starts in childhood) a feeling of insecurity is always the result. That insecurity has us withholding who we really are from others for fear of being judged. Alternatively, when we acknowledge, embrace and have compassion for our shadow selves, we connect at heart level to that deeper, all-knowing part of ourselves that requires no outside approval. When I’m connected to my own heart and allow my unique voice to express itself, it also enables others to feel that empathy and be connected – my inner diva connecting to yours. I experienced this when I gave a talk to a group of women entrepreneurs some years ago. I was supposed to be talking about how I became a success, so I could inspire and motivate everyone.

together. I finally realized that I was meant to just get up there and speak from the heart. Much to my chagrin, the first words tumbling out shared how unqualified I felt to be at the front of the room. In a humorous way, I listed all the things I felt I had failed at in my life. I ended on a hopeful note - believing that despite my failures and shortcomings, at least I was still in the game and doing the best I could. It didn’t feel like the best talk I’d ever done, so I was really surprised when women stood in line to chat with me afterward. They said they felt moved by what I had shared, because they, too, faced similar struggles. Paradoxically, there is great strength in our vulnerability. To celebrate the very best parts of us that bring forth our inner Divas, it’s crucial that we embrace and have compassion for those unlovable parts – not fight against or deny that they exist. Therein lays our strength to help our inner Divas really shine! m

Omega 3 Treatment As we move forward, the emphasis of health has shifted towards prevention. The average person would prefer to avoid a significant illness or disability, rather than experience the conventional treatment of these conditions. Many, if not all, diseases have their root causes in nutrition which is a surprise to most people.

THERE ARE 3 BROAD GROUPS OF OMEGA FATTY ACIDS

1] Omega 3- fish oil and flax seed oil which reduce inflammation 2] Omega 6- increase inflammation 3] Omega 9-olive oil which is heart healthy

Vitamins and Minerals

in a 50% decrease

Dramatic changes to our food composition and production techniques have occurred in the last 60 years. The adverse impact of these changes on our health is only now starting to be understood. In many cases, food no longer has sufficient nutrients to meet the needs of our bodies for optimal health. Medicine to date has been fixated on the concept of RDA’s (or recommended daily allowances ) of vitamins and minerals in the diet. An RDA is the level of a nutrient below which disease will occu, which is antiquated due to our current knoledge.

in a number of important cancers such as breast, colon, prostate and pancreatic cancer. Most of us would prefer to avoid these conditions rather than suffer the ‘exceptional’ treatment available these days for these cancers. This discussion is no more relevant than for omega 3 oils.

Think of Vitamin D and rickets, which is a bone disease that occurs below a certain Vitamin D level. Our understanding has progressed towards the concept of optimal nutrient levels, which are those levels at which the body operates at its best. Vitamin D levels which are optimal, result

14 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

Omega oils are long chain fatty acids that are essential for life and obtained solely from our diet. The body is always seeking an optimal balance for inflammation, not too little or too much. Too little impairs our ability to heal and fight infection. Too much leads to many of the diseases of modern times. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease all seem to have as a root cause, increased inflammation.

Our dietary omega 3:6 ratio is ideally 1:3 which produces very low levels of inflammation in the body. At present, many of us as a result of poor food choices, have a ratio of 1:25 which leads to many of the diseases that are so prevalent today. Alterations made to food to extend shelf life dramatically increase the omega 6 levels. Our cell walls store the omega fatty acids like a warehouse for cellular metabolism. If the ‘warehouse’ is full of inflammatory omega 6’s, the cellular metabolism shifts towards inflammation. What can we do about this? A diet that focuses on local, organic food can reduce omega 6 and chemical load on the body. Plant based protein has lower levels of omega 6’s than animal protein such as red meat. Minimizing processed foods and sugar in all its forms is a wise strategy. Supplementation with fish oil is another strategy to improve the omega 3:6 ratio. Fish oil should be high quality, tripledistilled, in order to minimize mercury and Jewellery

dioxin exposure. An ideal dose for most of us is 1000 mg fish oil twice daily. Take care to look at the DHA and EPA levels in the oil you choose. Aim for a combined daily dose of 1200 mg DHA and EPA for optimal brain and blood vessel health. You truly get what you pay for with commercially produced fish oil. m Dr. Ron Brown M.D. FRCS(C) Dr. Ron Brown, Executive Medical Director leading the team at True Balance, graduated with a fellowship in family Practice from the University of Alberta and worked 8 years in his rural family practice. Consider these current statistics: • About 75% of Canadian seniors have incomes under $60,000 and of that percentage • About 55% have incomes under $40,000 and • About 20% have incomes under $20,000 Generally individuals need less to live on during retirement. For The Sake Of Argument Let’s say that the average Canadian retiree this year will spend $50,000 on the listed retirement expenses, and assuming inflation averages 2% per year over a 25 year retirement period, and then the projected expenses in 25 years will be $82,030. Generally, individuals need less to live on during retirement and that estimated figure is 90% of the relevant current year expenses. Therefore, for the above scenario: • For this first year of retirement the retiree will require: 90% x $50,000 = $45,000 • For the 25th year of retirement the retiree will require: 90% x $82,030 = $73,827 Retirement Trade-Offs Planning for retirement involves trade-offs. The amount of retirement capital you need will often depend on: 16 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

• When you start investing, • When you retire, • The return on your investments, • Your income expectations, • Income indexing, • Your current saving levels, and •The amount of government pension income. • The amount of income you need at retirement is higher • Your current retirement savings levels are low • Government pension sources are expected to be lower Less Capital Required If: • You start investing early in your life • You retire later and decrease the length of your retirement • You earn a higher rate of return on your investments • You lower your income expectations at retirement • You don’t index your retirement income to Inflation • Your current retirement savings levels are higher

What Do Most Canadians Long For In Retirement? 1. To have enough money for more than the essentials, 2. To travel more extensively and more often and to be well taken care of when they do travel, 3. To live in comfortable surroundings, 4. To not be dependent on their children for help or finances. Will you be able to achieve your retirement goals? Most people don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan. • Government pension sources are expected to be higher m

Diva of

Dance Ivy Weir was born to move.

The mother of three is a traveling eyewear saleswoman by day and a diva of dance by night. Whether she’s peddling the hottest new frames across Alberta, bespeckled in funky pink MODO shades, pirouetting or popping and locking to the freshest hiphop beats of Flo Rida, Weir lives her life at center stage, dancing like no one’s watching. It’s a Friday afternoon at The Tea Place in North Edmonton, where Be Fabulous meets the 54-year-old blond belle, who’s bedazzled in rhinestones and sequins shining brighter than a September sun. Sure as Adidas head bands and summer sweat, Gaga can be heard pumping from steamy hip-hop dance studios across North America, inspiring raw, feisty, sizzlin’ choreography – and Weir and her girls gotta dance to it. Hip Hop

“I just love hip hop, jazz and soul. It’s so much fun to move to. I was definitely born in the wrong era,” giggles Weir. One thing is certain: disco may have been lost on this lady, but the Eighties are alive and well in her wardrobe, accessories and liveout-loud attitude. “My daughters told me I was a magpie in another life,” she confides. Weir takes dance classes every weeknight, and performs and competes in regional dance competitions with her daughters, who are also dance instructors. “Your mind thinks you’re 20 but your 18 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

body feels you’re 50,” she admits, but that doesn’t slow down Weir, who was once told she would never dance again after a motorcycle accident that left her with flesh eating disease on one burnt leg. Against the odds, she fully recovered, and kept on moving. A dancer since the age of six, Weir went on scholarship to the National Ballet School and danced for the San Francisco Ballet. Today she is a sales rep for Western Optical, a position she’s held for 27 years, and she loves her job – but her passion is dance.

••• “I always thought I would be a dancer, but I never knew I’d have two daughters who both took to it. They’ve won scholarships and awards. I’m so proud of them. We do a lot together,” says Weir. ••• Rachel wants to dance on a Disney cruise line one day and Brittany appeared on the first season of So You Think You Can Dance. Weir’s husband of 20 years won’t

sport spandex and join them in dance class but he helps with props and driving “He’s a Jack-of-all trades, a hunter, fisher and skier but also a fantastic dance dad,” says Weir, who also appreciates their extended family at several Edmonton dance studios. “Hip hop people are crazy. I love them. It doesn’t matter how goofy you are or what you show up in, it’s all O.K.” They’re her kind of peeps, the type of folks who tap the rhythm of life in their every move and who inspire Weir through life’s adventures – on and off stage. “ When I get up there, I take off my glasses and I can’t see the world. People are little pink globs, and for a moment I forget the dance; but I dance it and hardly remember it afterwards, then all I can think is ‘that was so much fun.’” m Jennifer Parks is a freelance writer based in Edmonton, AB. Release your inner diva...an adventure

Photos by Ellamae Boudoir Photography

Dianna’s Story: After my 42nd birthday, I found myself single and dating again, sexy meant a pair of cozy grey sweatpants and an oversize sweatshirt. For the first time in my adult life I started buying sexy lingerie and exploring my inner diva. But this assignment to call out the inner, inner diva and be photographed was a new experience. Wearing extreme makeup and bustiers with killer stilettos was something I had never done. Being seductive was not a natural thing for me, so I was surprised when Lorena and Amanda brought the vixen in me to the camera lens. Holy, who am I? Lorena and Amanda of Ellamae Bourdoir Photography are passionate about working with women of all ages, sizes and stages in their lives. “Combining the blessings of our past training and life experience, we love the challenge and opportunity to translate every woman’s unique beauty into amazing artwork.” {continued on page 35}

Alison’s Story: A few weeks ago, Dianna asked me if I would be interested in joining her for a Boudoir Photo Shoot. I had been curious, and had recently lost 35 pounds, so I thought, sure! Why not? If not now, when? In my twenties, I had my fair share of dates, but always felt up- tight about how I looked. I wasn’t the girl guys gravitated to across a room. I was attractive in a quiet way, and my strict British upbringing meant I didn’t like to draw attention to myself. I lacked self confidence in my looks and my sexuality. I got married in my thirties to an older, conservative man who certainly didn’t want me to ever look sexy and, sadly didn’t make me feel sexy in any way either. I became more shy, more insecure about myself and, in spite of outward career success, my inner Diva – who I doubted even existed, was no where to be found. {continued on page 35}

reshaping

u hCG weight loss

Since its discovery in the 1950’s by Dr. Simeon, small doses of hCG has been given to men and women to decrease their appetite and aid them in losing weight around their hips, thighs, buttocks and stomach. hCG, also known as Human Chorionic Gonotropins, is a hormone present in pregnant women.

While under the administration of the hCG hormone the body recruits anywhere from 1500-4000 calories from the body’s arsenal of stored fat. This results in clients losing anywhere from ½ - 1lb per day. Daily injections are required for a term of anywhere from 23 to 40 days. The program is simple, very simple. Discipline plus repetition for 60 days will gain you a loss in weight and an adjustment to your metabolism. How so? hCG works to reduce your hunger cravings and while

you take your daily shots, you remain on a very low calorie diet (VLCD) and allow your body to use up the fat that you have stored in your body. The best part is this adipose fat is the ‘pockets’ of fat that you don’t want. While your body utilizes the adipose fat, it breaks it down and gains energy which is why on hCG you feel better and not hungry. Is this program easy? Well, it is and it isn’t. In order for hCG to work, you must be disciplined and stay with the food that you are allowed. 30 days on the hCG shots, 30 days on maintenance with up to 30+ pounds gone! hCG is a phase! Phase I is your Fat Loading days, you will load up on fatty foods to prevent your body from going into “starvation” mode. You treat yourself to all the foods you love!

Your Phase I only last 2 days but by the end of day 2 you will be ready to move to Phase II. Phase II consists of Fat burning and you will be following a strict diet laid out by the protocol. It is very restrictive but if you do not vary or go off track from the diet, you will feel no hunger cravings and the pounds will fall away. You will finally be excited to get on the scale, just so you can watch the numbers drop! Phase III is only three days but they are very important. These are the days that you are setting your new weight point and allowing your body to maintain your new metobolism. You are still on the VLCD but now without the shots, you will start to feel the need to eat more. Try to stick to your VLCD (which will have become habit by now). This is crucial to maintaining the weight loss. Phase IV is Maintenance and it is the

MOST important part of hCG. Here you will start increasing your food intake to match you hunger but your choices of foods are still limited. You will still be staying away from starches and sugars for the next few weeks, to ensure that you stay within 2 lbs of you final weight you reached at the end of Phase III. By the end of the program you are reintroducing carbs into your diet and are learning to eat 5-6 small meals a day, you will learn healthy eating tips and tools. m Norrie Shan: As part of the executive staff of True Balance, Norrie has been a practicing R.N. since 1993 and is one of the key operational forces at True Balance. Paths To Divorce If you are contemplating getting divorced, you may find yourself wondering what is the best way. Divorce is a time of transition. Whatever the reasons for choosing to divorce, you are in the midst of recreating your life. Whatever was happening is no longer working for you and you want a different future for yourself. Now is the time to determine how you want to conduct yourself during the divorce. Imagine how you will feel at the end of the divorce when you look back to where you are now. Imagine how you will relate to your children and your now ex-spouse. Imagine what your children will tell their friends about this time in their life. Just as you are choosing a different path in life for yourself, there are several paths that reach the destination of divorce. Three of those paths are discussed below: 1. Mediation: Divorce Mediation is a cooperative process in which a skilled mediator facilitates respectful and constructive dialogue between spouses in order to reach mutually agreeable solutions. The meetings occur in private and the spouses determine the timing of the meetings. The mediator does not take sides or make decisions. The parties themselves are responsible for making their own decisions. The mediation process is both child and future focused. This is a creative process where the spouses reach solutions that might not otherwise be available in court. The cost of mediation depends on the complexity of the issues to be resolved. The parties may bring their lawyers to the sessions or consult with them before, during or after the meetings. At the end of the process the Mediator will complete a 24 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

Mediator’s Report that will then be taken to the parties lawyers to convert into a legal binding contract. 2. Collaborative Divorce: Is an innovative team approach in which the terms of divorce are cooperatively negotiated in four-way face-to-face meetings with spouses and specially trained collaborative family lawyers. Each spouse is represented by their own Collaborative Lawyer and when mutually agreed upon, other professionals such as divorce coaches, financial experts or child specialists can be included in the process. As with mediation, the spouses reach their own agreement, rather than having one imposed upon them by a court. The cornerstone of the Collaborative Divorce is a contract signed by both spouses and both lawyers prior to starting the negotiations. The contract specifies that all matters will be resolved outside of court. If either spouse wishes to go to court, then the process ends and both spouses must find new lawyers to represent them. For more information on Collaborative Divorce in Alberta go to: www.collaborativepractice.ca 3. Litigation: This is the traditional approach to divorce, whereby each spouse hires their own lawyer and the lawyer’s negotiate a settlement on behalf of their clients. If agreements cannot be reached through the lawyers, court appearances become necessary and then a judge will make the final decisions. This process is usually more costly and time consuming than either mediation or Collaborative Divorce. All documents filed in court become a matter of pubic record. This approach also tends to focus on the past and finding blame with the other spouse.

Rejuvenate with Botox A few wrinkles in time is an expectation of life. But a few wrinkles before their time often make us feel less like ourselves and cause us to look older than we feel. Botox rejuvenates our outlook as well as our faces. Botox is a quick and easy non – surgical procedure that is designed to smooth the deep, persistent lines that time creates. Persistent wrinkles caused by squinting, frowning or smiling appear around your eyes, mouth and forehead and could be gone with a simple procedure performed by our certified medical professionals. Gradual Improvement

Injections are done using a needle that is so tiny that most clients compare it to a mosquito bite. However for those who require or request it, topical anesthetic can be applied to the area being injected. A small amount of Botox is injected into the muscle that creates the wrinkle, it then blocks the nerve impulse to contract the muscle and smooths out the wrinkle. Once the Botox has been injected you will

be able to see the gradual improvement over the next week and the final result will last for up to three to four months. It is just that simple! The procedure allows you to defy time and be the better you for months at a time. Can you have better results, longer lasting effects? Yes, you can! A procedure properly scheduled using the lowest dosages in the most affected areas with our medical professionals can enhance your results making your wrinkles disappear. Our medical professionals have years of experience and talent for combining what works for you.

Yoga and the Baby Boomer Woman Mastery over the Mind What is Yoga, who is it created for and what are the short and long term benefits? Yoga is a 5000 year old system that was created, according to an Indian philosopher named Patanjali, to cease thought. Why? When thought ceases the Self (Spirit) stands in its true nature; otherwise the observer identifies with the turnings of thought. If you were to stop right now and identify the thoughts going through your mind what would they be about? We are constantly bombarded with information it is easy to see why the mind is so full of thoughts. Experiencing Yoga ensures you various tools to learn and practice to cease thought using Poses, breathing techiniques, concentration, meditation, visualization, guided relaxation, Mudras, Bhandas, chanting, and much more (depending on the teacher and the style of Yoga). Yoga is taught in groups and also one to one. Group classes give you the experience of practicing Yoga that is designed to reach many people at one time. One to one sessions (as Yoga was designed to be taught) give you customized Yoga practices and principles that fit you and your lifestyle that guide you on a specific path. You can do both; enhance the quality of your life by using specific practices and principles designed for you and then take those tools and be safer and more confident in group classes. Who is Yoga created for?

Anyone who wants to cease thought! Yoga is beneficial in the short term and especially the long term, for any age, gender or fitness level wanting to learn how to identify and become accountable to what is happening in the mind and how that transcends into your daily life. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give your Self; mastery over the mind rather than servant to the mind. Yoga is the most practical and effective way that I have found to enjoy peace of mind (by ceasing the thoughts), listen to my Self (Spirit) and receive the benefits of being physically strong, limber, calm and relaxed; yet awake. It is the feeling of going through life consciously rather than unconsciously (living rather than just surviving). With this practice I have been able to take a good look at what is working in my life, what is not, and make lifestyle changes that enhance my quality of life. baby boomers

Most of the people I teach are baby boomer women (as am I)! Some of the short term benefits I have observed are lower blood pressure, relief of anxiety, alleviating depressive thoughts, waking up in the morning without pain or tension, and better sleep. 28 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

Long term benefits include a balance of strength in all muscles, building bone mass, deeper sleep, clarity of mind when making decisions, resistance to colds, tools to use in daily life when anxious, depressed or angry and a more positive outlook on life.

Assisting people and animals to live their lives to the fullest!

Baby boomer women have had such different opportunities than their sister’s generations before. We have more formal education and have entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers and we are huge in numbers! Can you imagine the individual and social long term benefits of choosing a Yoga practice to enhance the quality of your life and thus enhancing the quality of others lives and so on and so on?

Why Consider

Hormone

Replacement Therapy?

Many of us have heard of the problems associated with the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Some of you may have considered avoiding HRT on the basis of these concerns. However, we are all interested in having the best quality of life possible as we age gracefully. Indeed, that is the base premise for the ‘Fabulous at Fifty’ concept. How do we bring this area into a better focus to allow good decisions regarding our health to be made? The body is always seeking a balance or what is called homeostasis. The brain senses the external and internal environment and direct glands in the body to produce hormones and keep the body in balance. As we age, hormone production gradually falls due to brain and gland aging. Our sex hormones are very powerful anti-inflammatories, this is in part why we feel awesome in our 20’s, when our sex hormones are at their peak. With a decrease in our sex hormones, men and women start to notice symptoms due to imbalances that can occur between these hormones. These changes can occur so gradually, that they just seem to be the ‘new normal’. Our sex hormones are critical to reduce inflammation, preserve muscle mass and metabolism as well as optimize brain function., If these hormones are so important, why didn’t hormone replacement in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) improve the health of the women who participated in this study? This is a great question and deserves some elaboration The WHI was a large study on the effects of hormone replacement in a large group of postmenopausal women. The conclusion of the study was that HRT could not be recommended for health promotion due to safety issues. A hormone is a very complicated 3-dimensional protein that interacts with its receptor like a key in a lock. These receptors are often on genes that are part of our DNA and reside in the nucleus of every cell in the body. 30 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2012

Talk about a powerful amplification effect! Hormone binding to the receptor on a gene results in the production of a protein that changes cellular function. Small changes to the structure of a hormone can alter its effect at the level of the receptor quite dramatically. Hormone modification can result in binding to receptors that the hormone was never meant to bind to. Pharmaceutical companies have to follow patent law which does not allow a patent on a naturally occurring substance, like our sex hormones. To get a patent that allows the cost of drug development to be covered, a pharmaceutical company must change the structure of the hormone or develop a new method of administration, such as a patch. Unfortunately, ••• patent law led to unanWhat makes bio-identical ticipated problems in the hormones different is area of sex hormones. that they are identical to Changes to the horhuman sex hormones. mones, to allow granting of a patent changed the ••• basic function of these hormones. These changes led to the increase in heart disease, cancer and blood clots seen in the WHI. I prefer the term ‘human identical’. This allows them to function exactly like the body’s own hormones and avoids many problems seen with conventional HRT. As well, we can measure their levels in the blood to ensure safety. Since these hormones are ‘human-identical’, we are not concerned with the problems seen with modified hormones like the ones used in the WHI. Finally, we are in a position to correct deficiencies and imbalances in sex hormones safely and address one of the underlying contributors to accelerated aging that is all too prevalent today. MY GREAT ESCAPE

PRAGUE Recently, I came back from a fantastic tour of the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. In Prague, I stayed at the five-star Hotel Palace Praha. This art nouveau-style hotel is a few blocks away from two of the city’s major historical landmarks – Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. The quaint cobblestone streets of Wenceslas Square are home to international restaurants, popular watering holes and the National Museum. Old Town Square houses the medieval Astronomical Clock, where figures of the 12 apostles and other sculptures perform a mechanical procession every hour. • Head to the pedestrianfriendly Charles Bridge to admire the work of local artists and photo-perfect views of

the Vltava River. Prague Castle is located on the other side of the bridge, and a visit is well worth the walk. The complex castle consists of three courtyardsand St. Vitus Cathedral. Those who are musically inclined may want to take the tram to Bertramka, the Czech retreat of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. • You’ll be hungry after all that walking, so book a table at a traditional Czech restaurant and feast on a hearty plate of goulash served with bread dumplings. Planning an evening at home with friends? Release your inner diva and dazzle your guests with the vibrantly coloured Glacial Refresher or the flavourful Smoke Salmon Pate, from ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen. What do these recipes have in common? They both include the irresistible, lip-smacking flavour of lemon.

Extremely versatile, lemons are loaded with vitamin C and are great additions to beverages, entrees or desserts. When buying fresh lemons, choose fruit that is firm, heavy for its size and bright in colour. Generally, the heavier the lemon, the more juice it contains. When squeezing out the juice, get everything you can out of this wonderful fruit. Apply moderate pressure with the palm of your hand and roll the room-temperature fruit back and forth on a countertop. Cut the fruit in half crosswise and ream out the juice using a reamer, juicer or fork. One medium sized lemon will yield about 3 tablespoons (40 mL) of juice. The juice may be stored in an air-tight container in the freezer for up to one year. GLACIAL REFRESHER

Alison, my partner in this adventure and I, both walked through the doors wondering how we would stir up our diva selves. Wine, fruit and cheese platters, and the warm and comfortable studio instantly put us at ease and before we knew what was happening, our street clothes were replaced with bustiers and sexy lingerie, beautiful jewelry and the hottest high heels we have ever seen never mind worn. Not to mention a sexy hairdo and long luscious eyelashes. Throughout the day we talked about how hard women are on themselves in the quest for the perfect body and how we judge ourselves so harshly. But inside every woman of every age and body shape is a beauty waiting to be released. Mission accomplished! m Dianna Bowes

As my forties dawned, I began to feel something awakening in me. I wasn’t satisfied with the status quo. I needed more, wanted more; More attention, more loving, more fun and a connection to the Diva I knew was in me. I divorced my husband of 12 years, and one of the first things I remember doing was going into an expensive lingerie shop and buying sexy bras and panties, something I never wore before. I am proud of my boudoir photos. I see a beautiful, mature woman at the prime of her life. I have accepted who I am, what I look like, and what it took to get me to this place. My Diva and I live in comfortable companionship together. I’m no longer shy to show a little cleavage or leg, tastefully of course. m Alison Phillips

POWER IN THE MARKETPLACE As most of us already know, baby-boomer women hold a lot of power in the marketplace and Alberta businesses understand that, too. While sharing a coffee or martini with friends, enjoy perusing the local businesses, all while supporting women’s charities, such as the Edmonton-based Suit Yourself and Ovarian Cancer, this event creates an excitement in the community every year. “We are drawing people as far as Yellowknife to the show” says Dianna Bowes, the event organizer.
