Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

Sacred Sex by Barbara Lee
Relationship Intimacy and the Problem with Having an Affair
I worked with a man who separated from his wife. They had not had sex the last few years and John was looking forward to going to the bar and meeting someone he could have sex with. The next weekend I talked to him and learned that he didn’t have sex with anyone. He told me in his own vernacular that he realized that when you “lay down with someone chances are one of you is going to get up with feelings – and the one with feelings might be you or might not be you. Either way, it’s not at all comfortable.”
ably isn’t a good idea to have sex with them.
An important keystone of a sexual ethic is relational intimacy. You have to know your partner at least well enough to have a conversation about the nature of your relationship.
You may change in ways that change the commitment you are willing to make, but that also must be addressed openly and honestly. And we can only enter into those discussions when there is first and foremost a faithfulness rooted in truthfulness, dependability and promise keeping.
Relational intimacy means that you trust your partner enough to talk openly about your current needs and desires. It also means that you are honest enough to talk about it if those needs and desires change. You should both have the same understanding of the nature of your relationship. Frankly, if you can’t have this conversation with your partner, it prob-
We make ourselves incredibly vulnerable in sex and it helps to know going into it that we are on the same page. Knowing someone over time and sharing a history together is the best way to develop trust. And trust requires being faithful to one’s promises. If you are willing to make a commitment to this partner, then whatever the nature of that commitment and whatever it’s duration it must be anchored in fidelity.
Sometimes a couple agrees from the beginning that their relationship will not be exclusive. Or they decide that the best thing for their relationship is to renegotiate the terms of the commitment to include other sexual partners.
8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October • 2016
Whatever a couple agrees to through open and honest communication, and without coercion can be part of their sexual ethic. But affairs that involve secrecy and deception cannot be part of ethical sexuality. When we are in a committed relationship, the ethical thing is to talk openly with our partner about the things that make us consider an affair long before it happens. A lot of people believe they are not the “kind of person who has an affair.” But it’s not true. Hardly anyone goes into a committed relationship expecting to cheat. Yet, 30 to 60 percent of all married people will have an affair. There are two primary reasons that people have affairs. One is to have an affair. The person plans to keep it a secret and continue to live their “normal” life as though nothing has changed, while seeking affirmation or excitement or some other
unmet need. The other reason is to be found out in order to blow up an existing relationship and move on. Affairs don’t create problems within a marriage. Affairs are what people do when they are unable, for whatever reason, to deal directly with the problems they are having with their partner. When two people are having difficulties, an affair allows them to “blame” the cheating partner or even the third party. And it keeps them from having to deal with their own issues while working on the relationship itself. Barbara Lee is the author of Sacred Sex: Replacing the Marriage Ethic with a Sexual Ethic and Tension in the Tank: Embracing Interfaith Mysticism Without Leaving the Church. Holistic Body Love by Rosalyn Fung
Embracing
Your Inner Queen As a Self-Love Psychologist & Mindset Coach who helps other women live out their Inner Queen, I believe the greatest gift to yourself is to truly believe that no matter what your weight, shape, size, age, or circumstances are, you are absolutely beautiful – and then to have the ability to go out into the world to reflect this feeling inside and out! Start to appreciate that you are perfect just the way you are. A Queen by my definition is a woman who is completely certain of herself, grounded in her being and is unapologetic for who she is and how she shows up in the world. A queen is a confident woman who can laugh at herself and at the same time know her value and worth in this world. Purpose
She is a woman who not only knows her gifts she brings to this world, she also uses her gifts to serve her highest purpose in life. Her purpose could be to be the best mother she can be, a entrepreneur who helps others with her service, a teacher, a support to others, and there are many more than this space could allow me to write. Her divine feminine energy is commanding and powerful, and this can be expressed in a quite subtle way, or it can be expressed in a more assertive way. A queen leaves footprints on this earth to be remembered by all those lives she’s touched with her grace, dignity, and unique gifts.
Here are 3 ways to start embracing your Inner Queen and shine: 1) Embrace Your Strengths. Make a list of all the things you love about yourself. If you are having trouble, ask a few loved ones what they love about you and what they see as your strengths. Reflect on all your triumphs. Then write “I AM…” in front of each of these strengths and qualities. Read these statements outloud in front of the mirror everyday for the next 30 days.
12 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October • 2016
2) Take Accountability & Make Conscious Choices Moving Forward. Journal all the significant events you’ve experienced in your life that brought you negative emotions, and reflect on what you learned about yourself in those situations. Focus on your own actions during these times and the outcomes of your choices. This exercise can help you learn what actions you took that served you, and which ones to leave behind.

3) TRUST your Intuition. You know that inner voice that we often ignore and then later go, “Ugh! I knew I should have listened to myself!” after something goes awry? Practice letting go of your ego-self and listen to your inner voice, because it will guide you to your Highest Self. We all have a Queen inside – it’s our birthright to claim this beautiful and powerful part of us. I’m here if you need support bringing out your Inner Queen!

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
On the
side When it comes to prepping a meal for lunch or supper, what’s your routine like? Do you plan your shopping around meals you want to prepare, or do you plan your meals by what’s sitting in the fridge? Either way can work, and I’ve often started the week out one way and ended it the other. Garnish
I can go for long periods of time where I eat more or less the same things just as long as I have something to look forward to on the side of my plate. A pickle, garnish, or dressing that are outside the normal experience makes getting a meal ready just a bit more special than usual. My standard has evolved to a protein + starch + vegetables/fruit + a sensational side. Often, it is the spoonful on the side that I look forward to most of all. Pork chops + roast potatoes + a mix of cooked vegetables + onion confit Chicken + rice + broccoli/cauliflower + saskatoon chutney Yogurt + granola + plum preserves
I recently completed a summer’s worth of canning and then held a big sale where people came and bought their favourite treats while selecting some new ones to try. Some people were looking for jam, others wanted a pepper jelly, or chutney. This year I made a selection of marmalades, carrot cake jam, peach barbecue sauce, saskatoon chutney, plum pepper jelly, and onion confit. While some of those preserves might sound like something to save for a special occasion, I say to heck with that, and let’s make our own rules! Approach every meal as something special and worth enjoying, even if it’s a simple salad. Yup, if you add a little splash of olive oil to a spoonful of fruit chutney, it makes a really nice salad dressing. One of the things I have noticed this summer were more people canning than usual, and if you’re someone who isn’t into it, you just need to have a look around your neighbourhood or look online. The range of good preserves available is astounding if you speak with your friends or visit a busy farmer’s market.
14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I October • 2016
For that matter, you can get some pretty amazing “home canned” goods in lots of the specialty grocery stores and delis right now, and I’ve even seen some of the large commercial grocers carrying them, and you can always order them online for delivery right to your mailbox. There’s no reason to tolerate boring food, unless you want to, so here’s to a future with brightly loaded plates and good flavours for everyone! Go ahead and get brave, and let your palate come alive. Let’s all welcome a future of playing with food! You might just come up with a new favourite for your household, and to share with someone new. Are you ready to make a batch of red pepper jelly to share with your friends or entertain friends? This is a quick and easy dish that you can preserve in a canner, or just pop it into jars and refrigerate for up to three months. Let it sit and “meld” for a couple of weeks before eating to let the flavours really shine. Pam’s Saskatoon Chutney Made 6 x 1 cup jars 4 cups berries (washed and picked over) – can use saskatoons, blueberries, raspberries 4 cups peeled, diced, tart apples (about 5 medium sized apples) 2 cups finely chopped onions 3 cloves minced garlic 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated/chopped fine or ½ tsp of ground ginger 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp fresh black pepper 1 tsp ground cardamom seeds 1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp red pepper flakes Small green pepper (seeded and chopped)
Small red pepper (seeded and chopped) ½ large jalapeno pepper, or 1 small 1 tsp grated lemon zest ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice Instructions In large pot, combine everything except lemon juice and zest. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring often. Reduce heat and boil gently, for about 1 to 1 ½ hours or until onions are translucent and product is thickened to jam consistency. Remove from heat and stir in lemon zest and juice. Ladle into clean, sterile jars with a ½ inch headspace. Refrigerate chutney for 2-3 weeks to allow flavours to mellow. Keep refrigerated, and consume within 3 months. You may preserve this chutney using up to date canning methods. Keep in mind that altitude impacts processing time. Pam Robertson is the food lover behind The Ladybirds’ Kitchen (www.ladybirdskitchen. com), where her goal is to help people get excited about cooking and to #EatInspired! Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi
The Queen of Absolutely Everything
There are probably lots of roles that you might have in life – wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, co-worker, but there is another role that you also might have taken on without even realizing it: The Queen of Absolutely Everything Responsible for All Things Now you might immediately recognize yourself in that role but if you are not sure that you have taken it on, ask yourself how many times in the past few days you have: • solved someone else’s problem • completed a task that actually belongs to someone else • offered unsolicited advice or criticism How many times throughout the day are you the most responsible person – the MRP – particularly for your friends and family? If you are a mother, it’s pretty likely that you are. Partly out of necessity and partly out of survival, women often just take charge of what needs to be done. There’s a little element of control freakery
that comes into play, but often doing it yourself just seems to be the quickest and simplest way to get things done. Sometimes it reaches beyond our kids and spouse to our extended family and our friends. We become known as the one people turn to when they need something. The problem is that being the MRP becomes a problem. Everyone gets used to you being the one to figure stuff out, fix the problem and make the plans. It becomes a habit that you are the go-to person for most everything and as a result, you get pulled in too many directions with too many things on your mind and your plate. Sometimes we even secretly like being the Queen of Absolutely Everything even though it comes with a high cost. When you are always the MRP, you send 2 powerful messages to the people around you. The first is that you have all the time and

energy in the world to take care of whatever needs attention. Of course that isn’t true but an expectation gets created that you are always available. After a while your efforts are usually taken for granted which might sound like “No big deal, mom always takes care of that.” The second message you send is that you don’t really trust that others are capable of getting the job done or choosing wisely. When we rush in and take over, subtly we are suggesting that we are the only one who can handle the job. The truth is people can’t become problem solvers or be independent unless they get the chance to solve problems on their own. If you have been the Queen for a while, it might be a good time to start abdicating some of your responsibilities. We often think of delegating tasks as a work related activity – something the boss or manager does. But actually the art and skill of delegation is something everyone needs – particularly women with families and friends. Delegation simply means letting another person take the reins for a while. If you are someone who has always been responsible for everything, start practicing delegating tasks to other people. That might feel a little uncomfortable at first,
for you and for others, but there are lots of different ways you can delegate. Tell someone else exactly how to do the task and then let them do it. Ask the person to collect information and then report back to you so you can decide what you want them to do next. Ask the person to collect information, list some options and make a recommendation to you about what to do next and you approve it. Ask the person to make their own decision and then tell you what they did. Ask the person to make whatever decision they think is best with no need to report back to you. There is one critical task you can do as Queen of Absolutely Everything – bestow upon yourself permission to let go of some of your responsibilities. Do it in service of building the capacity of those you love. Do it for your own well-being. Stepping out of her
COMFORT ZONE and onto the stage Lee Cardwell is the mother of three perfect children and five perfect grandchildren. After spending her career as an Accounting Manager and Contract Manager with the Government of Alberta she retired to enjoy life. She can honestly say that she has always tried to find the humour in life and that was not an easy task as a government employee. She is taking this opportunity to try something completely foreign to her – Stand-Up Comedy. Her desire is to make others laugh, hopefully with her and not at her. Lee has been a member of Toastmasters for ten years and hopes that training will help with the delivery of her performance. She has tried her hand as an author and is expecting her first book to be published by Self Counsel Press in February 2017. Her book is about dealing with dementia, first with her mother and then with her husband. Although dementia is a very dreadful and serious disease, you sometimes have to use your “black humour” to get through it.
Talent Show Winner
Lee performed at Entertaining the Dream - Baby Boomer Talent Search on October 13th at the Sawmill Conference and Banquet Centre and was awarded the grand prize. Performing along with other standup comics, singers and dancers, the event was organized by Fabulous@50 in support of The Edmonton Dream Centre. NO GENDER GAP with Investments but Women Invest Differently Do you earn as much as your male counterparts? You do with investments. They don’t care what gender you are. So it is time to get actively involved with managing your finances. Based on my years of experience, I want to debunk the myth that women are afraid of finances. According to a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study, women use money as a means to an end, not the end in itself so they approach money management differently. They take less investment risks, but do better in the long-term. Why is there a lower percentage of women involved in their own financial planning than men? In the same survey noted-above, BCG came to the conclusion that women lacked confidence about dealing with money, probably because of socialization. In my experience, I believe women want more information before making such an important decision. Financial planning is a major life decision and you need to have your say. Whether you are single or in a couple, take part in establishing and maintaining the strategic plan specifically designed for your desired retirement lifestyle. Your financial advisor should know what is important to you– I know that is key when I am working with my clients. Let your investment strategy reflect your values. The Language of Food: Invitation Have you ever received a gorgeous invitation? Perhaps inside words were embossed on heavyweight paper or stylized on more delicate parchment. By looking at the packaging and presentation you knew the occasion was special and you a VIP to be invited to it, like royalty.

“Come hither. Yes, you!” Ever hear food talk to you like this? Say what?! It can be packaged – even in its natural state – flaunting itself, shimmering, and calling out to you to pay attention. Think about it: the amazing scent to stop you in your tracks, the shine or the irresistible touch. I’m telling you, this food is inviting you to partake.
What aroma gets your mouth drooling? Even your humble fresh apple has a smell. Pay attention to this food language. It can help you to make future healthy choices. While some manmade smells can be intoxicatingly pleasant the challenge is for you to pay attention to the smell of natural food in order to strengthen your food vocabulary.

Touch
My sister Lana gave me an autographed copy of Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan. He mentions that plants of all kinds – both edible and not – try to entice the eater to consume for its survival. Is your attention captured by the sheen, color or shape? I challenge you to be aware of what invites you to that market stall, or
Touch your food; listen with touch. Note the hard or softness of your food when using a fork or knife. Use your hands if possible. Caress, poke, rub, and pet this food. Let it speak to you in this tactile way. Work your tongue over the mouthful; pause to let your teeth register the sensation.

If you’re grape pressing with your feet (cool) – really feel that food. Allow what you eat to communicate to you via energy, temperature, and texture. Taste I’ve written many articles on how to enjoy food when pausing to taste it. I remind you to note any flavors like sweet, savory, sour, or salty. If possible, do not combine too many flavors at once if you’re really trying to pay attention to the particular food (as a food language exercise). This act will help to reduce cravings – believe it – and have you focus on main flavor instead of it being masked or blended with others. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have, say, a sweet and sour dish of some kind but if you want to “listen” to a particular food item, taste it on its own. Royal Food Be on the lookout for these invitations. As the royal VIP you are, choose only what will help you progress in health pursuits; give attention to food that will add to your health. You’re that special, worthy to receive from magnificent life-giving food. Slow Cooker Aromatic Apple and Pear Sauce In this recipe I’ve combined both fresh BC apples and pears – that we purchased directly from the orchard – to offer a win-
ning combination of taste, aroma, and nutrition. Enjoy with yogurt for breakfast, alongside meat dishes, as a dessert with ice cream, or simply by itself! Get the best quality apple cider (no alcohol) you can find or simply use apple juice instead. Enjoy!
• 12 cups mixed pears and apples (Gala or other softer apple), cored, cubed • ¾ cup fresh apple cider or apple juice • ¾ cup water • 1 tbsp. cinnamon powder Combine ingredients in your slow cooker. Set on low and cook for approximately 6 to 8 hours until fruit is soft. Mix well then transfer about ¾ of the batch to a food processor or high quality blender. Be careful, it is hot so ensure there is some room for hot air to escape! If you must, blend in two batches. Mix the smooth sauce with the remaining ¼ of the batch that is chunky. Cool. LIve Love Explore Leon Logothetis
Leon Logothetis’s life was well plotted out for him. He was to do well in school, go to university, get a job in finance, and spend the next fifty years of his life sitting behind a slab of wood, watching the rainslicked streets of London from thirty floors above. For a long time, he followed that script, until one day, he finally realized he was living someone else’s life—a good one—but not one of his own choosing. So he walked out of that life, and discovered the one that took him around the world. Find out more about Leon and his journey click here.
