our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes

Eating healthy is easier than you think, it just takes a little preparation and research before you head out to eat.

FAT, FOOD, FATIGUE I am heading into the 4th week of the food program with Shonda Holt, an Edmonton Functional Nutrition Practioner (Nourishing Yourself ). I decided to try her program because I was frustrated with my hormones, digestion issues and weight gain. Although I eat fairly clean and am very active, I felt something was off. The first few weeks were interesting as I was learning how to cook and prepare food from a different perspective. Planning is the key! The hunger feels different, and I have only had a few cravings, one for ice cream a few nights ago. But I know my tummy will hurt... so I passed that one.

The very best thing has been sleeping. My thermostat turned down, the extreme hot flashes have gone, so guess who is sleeping better....me! Yeah! But the hardest thing has been handling stress. Although I don’t feel stressed, my body has become used to operating at a high stress level and it has become my normal. Shonda challenged me to spend time during the day to stop and breathe. She suggested I take a minute before each meal and just breath, focusing on my heart. It relaxes me, but I keep forgetting to do it. Some resistance here I think. I have been meditating before bed and

gers who post great recipes online that are free from wheat, gluten, and dairy, it makes preparing meals so much easier.

This morning I was down just over 5 lbs. My tummy is a little flatter and overall I feel pretty good. I have had several days of extreme fatigue, probably because I am not eating enough. From what Shonda tells me this is a common problem for women my age. It is not over-eating, it is under-eating and not getting enough nourishment from the food we eat. This is where Shonda is so great, she has lots of recipe ideas and is always there to help me when I don’t know what to do next.

I finally broke down and bought a new Ninja blender, holy cow, that thing could almost cut the grass, it is so powerful. It even came with a little food processor and smoothie cups.

An a big thank you to all the food blog-

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson

Delicious

FISH Dishes

I’ve got a large bunch of fish in the freezer and I am in experimentation mode over here. Some of my favourite recent fish dishes include pan fried, fish cakes, fish pie, chowder, and this tasty Prosciutto wrapped delight. This dish takes very little time to prepare (25 minutes from start to sitting at the table). Since this recipe uses a white fish and it’s pretty mild, you can easily add plenty of flavour with herbs and spices, and you can add a finely chopped red chilli pepper if you want some heat. 250 g baby potatoes 2 skinless, boneless haddock or pollock fillets 4 slices Prosciutto ham 200 g of 5-8 cm tomatoes olive oil 4 garlic cloves 5 ml salt 2.5 ml pepper 5 ml fish seasoning (a dry rub or blend if you have it) Lemon wedges for squeezing

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 Celsius) 2. Carefully remove any bones from the fish, and skin (you can usually buy it this way). 3. Parboil potatoes for 5 minutes in salted boiling water, drain well and let them dry during the rest of your prep. 4. Season fish with salt and pepper, along with dry fish rub, or some Old Bay, or Italian seasoning. 5. Wrap ham around the fish 6. Place fish in a baking dish with tomatoes, parboiled potatoes, and garlic cloves. Season again and drizzle everything with a little olive oil. 7. Bake in the oven for 15-18 minutes, depending on thickness of your fillets. Check the fish with a fork to see if it is flaking easily, and cook for another minute or two if it’s not quite ready.

8 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I May • 2017

8. Squeeze lemon juice over fish and potatoes, and serve along with a crispy salad. A splash of balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze over the entire dish (including the tomatoes) is a tasty alternative to the lemon. *What’s prosciutto? It’s a delightfully salty, thin sliced, long aged ham that adds great flavour to your fish. Look for it at the deli, and treat yourself to a good one (some of the mass processed prosciuttos look good but they don’t have the same depth of flavour to them). You can wrap prosciutto around all kinds of goodies, including asparagus, melon, cheese, or whatever your heart desires.

Five Ways to Honor the Mother of all Mothers© As Mother’s Day approaches, many of us find ourselves without our mothers to take to lunch, buy flowers for, or to send a card. However, we all do still have a mother – the great mother of all – Mother Earth. She is there for us always and has been nurturing us for centuries, maybe even eons. While we do whatever we do, be it a help or a hindrance, she remains steadfast in providing, despite a great depletion of resources and a lack of support in return. There are many ways that we can help nurture and give gifts to Mother Earth to honor her nurturing of us all. 1. Plant Something: flowers, greenery – in a garden, on a balcony, in a pot, or even out in the wild somewhere. Re-sow seeds so that we replace that which we have taken from the earth. 2. Honor the 3 Rs – Reduce, Re-Use, and Recycle: Here in Edmonton, we are pretty

good at recycling all the packaging that comes with the things we buy. It seems we are also good at re-using, as evidenced by the many garage sales, thrift shops, and all manner of opportunities to pass along our treasures or gather up someone else’s. The reduce part is one of the trickiest because we still live in a society where mass consumerism is still thought to be the best way for our economy to thrive. But how many pairs of shoes does one person need? The latest gadget and the latest bling have to have been produced from somewhere using resources from Mother Nature. What if we were to assess how much is enough and then stop buying what isn’t essential? 3. Attract Birds and Bees: Even if you have just a small yard, there is much you can do to attract birds and bees. Without the birds and the bees, our ecosystem falters.

10 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I May • 2017

I’m intrigued by a simple house for lone bees that are not part of a hive. It’s easy to install in your yard and will help with flower pollination. 4. Sing or Hum: Whether or not you think you can carry a tune, make a joyful noise. Singing, humming, and whistling are all healing to us and Mother Earth. We may have no idea of how much impact those joyful sounds will have, but we do know that positive thoughts and positive sounds change the structure of water; there is plenty of water on our planet to be healed. 5. Keep Love in Your Heart: Hold a sacred space of love for all beings on this

earth, whether human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or flying and crawling creatures. We each have our place, with one supporting the other. Let’s teach our children, by example, what a loving heart is. Happy Mother’s Day, Mother Earth. We’re grateful for you and your bounty; we appreciate your beauty; we will work diligently to restore what has been lost to you! Sue Paulson inspires others to love their magnificence. Avoiding the heartbreak of Ghosting in over 50’s Dating

Watch for the warning signs The definition of Ghosting according to Urban Dictionary is… “The act of suddenly ceasing all communication with someone the subject is dating, but no longer wishes to date.” A better definition is you and I meet, we have amazing chemistry, we hang out, have awesome sex, I bond to you and you disappear ultimately breaking my heart. You don’t answer my calls or texts and I am so confused and concerned. Are you hurt? Did I do something wrong? We were making plans and now you’re gone. Sadly, ghosting happens all the time now. Back in the day before the Internet when people met via a fix up by friends, no one

would have even thought to disappear like they do today. Their reputation was at stake and they didn’t want to face the judgment of their friends. They would have done the proper thing and said… “I think we aren’t a match.” You’d have closure, maybe some tears but you’d have known why the relationship was ending. In today’s cyber world, no one is holding anyone accountable so it’s easy to disappear. People think by not answering your texts or calls, they are not hurting your feelings. What they don’t realize is you hurt even more because you have no idea what caused the rift and no way to fix it.

When the chemistry is this hot, turn and run the other way. Relationships are rarely based on chemistry alone and chemistry keeps a friendship, a much needed connection from happening. You can’t totally prevent this from happening but I want to give you some warning signs that can help you recognize you’re headed for trouble when they appear. Warning Sign #1 is Chemistry…and I mean hot can’t take your hands off each other and the sex is so amazing. When the chemistry is this hot, turn and run the other way. Relationships are rarely based on chemistry alone and chemistry keeps a friendship, a much needed connection from happening.

Warning Sign #4…You start talking future talk and he is silent. He knows there’s no future. He’s just in this for the fun and nothing serious. He stays silent when you future talk and disappears versus “Hurting your feelings” letting you know he’s not on the same relationship page as you are. Warning Sign #5…He tries to end it but you draw him back into the relationship because you’ve bonded and you miss him so much when you are apart.

You bond so fast from the intimacy that you don’t have a chance to really see who someone is until it’s too late.

At this point, he feels like you are not hearing him so instead of going through the drama of a breakup again he just disappears.

Warning Sign #2…He won’t commit to being exclusive to you.

Really listen to what men are saying to you because men mean what they say.

Usually he’ll say something like, “we are having so much fun, let’s see where it goes.”

We as women don’t always mean what we say…mostly because we are people pleasers and we think things are changeable. The disconnect happens because we think men think this way too! They do not!

And you agree to it because you’re bonding through sex and he’s fun and you think he is too. He’s not and he’s telling you he’s not about a relationship. He’s about fun when he uses this phrase. Warning Sign #3….You find yourself feeling more clingy and needy because you don’t how you fit into his life. Instead of being a grown up and telling you this is getting on his nerves, he disappears. People would prefer to just leave then get involved in some type of confrontation with you. Again, the reason is because he is not committed to the relationship.

I’ve given you 5 warning signs to watch for in future relationships. Use these. They can save you a lot of heartbreak in the future. Roberta and Jesse on vacation.

Late in Life Motherhood

A Dream Come True As we get older and wiser (and better in my humble opinion), we reflect on our lives, and the paths we have chosen and decisions we have made, there is sometimes, if we are lucky, one thing that stands out as that life changing decision and or experience that is truly a ‘dream come true’. I am sure that most of the mothers reading this will agree with me that motherhood is that one amazing experience we can’t imagine not having in our lives. For me, being a mother was really my biggest dream for myself, the one thing in life that I always wanted, looked forward to, dreamed about and could not imagine a full and contented life without. But by the time I hit my 40s, the ‘typical’ path to motherhood - meeting the ‘perfect’ man for me, getting married and starting a family, still had not happened. And because I knew the one thing I never wanted to ‘miss out on’ was having a baby,

I had to make a very big decision, and that was to forgo the ‘husband’ or partner, and become a ‘single mother by choice’. Think Positive

So in consultation with my family Doctor, I was referred to a fertility clinic. There the Doctor told me where I stood in terms of motherhood at this age - at my age 43 almost 44, the chances of me getting pregnant were 3 - 5%, and then if I got pregnant the chances of a miscarriage at my age were 50%. Wow, I thought, maybe I waited too long!! I was worried, but still 100% determined to think positive and try my best to be a mom, to get pregnant and give birth to my own child. I honestly took the attitude that if it was ‘meant to be’ then the universe would send me my child. And so the long journey through fertility treatment began. I tried 6 times to conceive a baby with an unknown donor sperm, my own 43 year old eggs, lots and

16 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I May • 2017

lots of fertility drugs and IUI - but each month it did not work. For my 7th try (and 7 has always been my ‘lucky’ number), my Doctor suggested IVF, a very expensive and invasive procedure, but she was hopeful that it would work for me - and so was I. So I took out a loan to pay for it - that plus all the drugs through my 7 attempts probably cost me close to $50,000, and went in hoping against hope that this time would work. I had 4 eggs retrieved, and 3 days later when it was time for the eggs to be transferred back into me, there was only one egg still alive. One little microscopic 43 year old egg left! I was so discouraged, as the more eggs transferred back in the better my odds that one would survive to make a healthy viable baby. But the lovely team of nurses, who had gotten to know me so well over this year

long journey kept encouraging me - ‘you only need one egg’ - and they were right. This time I was successful, I had a very healthy and enjoyable pregnancy and on June 29th, 2008 at the age of 45, I gave birth to my beautiful, healthy son Jesse, who is now almost 9 years old. I call him my ‘one good egg’. Motherhood has been my dream come true, and it has been even better, more fun and more exciting than I even imagined it would be. Raising a 9 year old at the age of 54 is amazing - it keeps me young - we have so much fun together. And having Jesse always reminds me daily of the miracle of life - the universe sent me my son, and I am grateful every day that I have him. Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi

What my mother knew about

GARDENS AND LIFE Well what did you expect? Sometimes my mother’s voice pops into my head with the most annoying questions even if they’re said in the most loving way. Many years ago when I was a novice gardener, my mother would share her years of expertise. I suggested that daisies would be a fine addition to my new garden and she cautioned me that although pretty, daisies are just like an unwelcome houseguest. Once they take root they don’t go away easily. I took my mother’s advice for a long time. Even after she passed away I continued to avoid the daisies. There came a time a few years ago while encountering challenges

with shade and drought, that an area of my garden wasn’t filling in as quickly as I wanted. And so I decided to plant the dreaded daisies. I do recall the voice of my mother whispering in my ear that this was not a good choice but I quickly dismissed it and made the decision to invite the daisies in. I didn’t stop long enough and ask myself, “Given that the daisies are going to take over, is this what you really want to do?” Or remind myself that truly satisfying results sometimes take patience. Or even that the short term burst of blooms was going to come with long term consequences. Nope. I ignored the obvious and plowed ahead.

18 • Be Fabulous! eMagazine I www.fabulousat50.com I May • 2017

Fast forward. Guess what? The daisies are making a fine stand in trying to take over. Yes, in the past couple of years, I’ve made some progress. Indeed I think that the war may have actually turned in my favour. But I’m still paying the price today for that unconscious choice made earlier. Your life is no different than my garden. There are likely areas where you make mostly unconscious choices and then experience the consequences for months or years. And like me you probably have a loving little voice in your head that asks, “Is this a good idea?’ but you go ahead anyway. The irony is we somehow expect something different will happen even though we know better. We are a little surprised that we are out of breath on the stairs when we’ve chosen to not work out, or we are taken aback by a credit card bill when we’ve not paid attention to our purchases. Or you might find that you and your partner have nothing in common when you’ve spent all of your energy and time at work. It’s not that you always get what you want. Sometimes you make a fully conscious decision and you don’t get the results you expect. That’s the nature of life. What you can count on is when you make choices without really thinking about the probable outcome, you will likely get you what you don’t want.

Slow down long enough to consider the outcomes of your actions. In gardens and life, weeds are inevitable. It’s just nice to not have to take care of the ones you plant yourself. At least that’s what my mother would have said. Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. Sacred Sex by Barbara Lee

Sex: Sin or Sport On the airplane on the way to a conference in Las Vegas, the women sitting next to me asked what I do. When I told her I was an author, speaker and trainer, she asked me what I wrote about. When I told her I write and speak about Sextegrity, you could see the alarm register in her eyes. Celebrate Sexuality

When I started talking about the fact that we are polarized as a society between “sex as sin” and “sex as sport” her eyes had glazed over completely. And when I told her I thought we needed to be able to celebrate our sexuality while treating it with moral integrity, she pursed her lips together, told me that she believed in Jesus, and then looked straightforward determined not to have any further conversation with me for the duration of the flight. That night in Las Vegas, I was in the lounge visiting with other speakers when

one of the women in our group drew the attention of a nearby man. He complimented her on her outfit and asked about our group. He asked for a picture to be taken with her and wrapped his arm around her. She politely smiled and told him she was married. He paid no attention to her personal boundaries or appropriate social boundaries and moved in closer to her while telling her she was hot. At that point, one of the men in our group drew him off by engaging him in conversation, asking what he did for a living and the like. Navigating

Every single day we encounter people who treat sex like it is a sin and people who treat sex like it is a sport. Every day we receive messages about how we look and how we should look. Every day we have to navigate our sexual lives in the midst of conflicting and contradictory messages.

Which is why it is so important to define your own sexual ethic and to use it as your personal guide when determining the circumstances in which you will and will not engage in healthy sexual behavior. If you have been reading my column, you know that I encourage you to adopt a sexual ethic that includes mutual consent, maturity, equality, responsibility, relational intimacy, authenticity, and joyfulness. Sexual Repression

May we be free of the kind of worldview that would strangle the passion out of life and try to tell us that sex is somehow ungodly and unclean. How grateful we can be that we no longer need to cower in the sexual repression of the past. But may we also be free of the worldview that my actions are mine alone, that I have no responsibility for the darkness in society, that I am not connected to every other human being and that their fate is not also mine to bear. Today and in all the days to come, I invite you to love your body, to relish sex, and to marvel in this very good gift. Embrace the joy of being a body fully united to spirit, the wonder of being a truly whole and holy person! Just enjoy each other’s company. This year he’ll be away on Mother’s Day, we are going to create our own MD date. Probably hit a market, do whatever moves us in the moment. Pam: My kids both live in different provinces from me, but we are in touch all the time. Mother’s Day I will speak with both of them by phone, and call my mum for a nice chat, and maybe go for a nice hike on a local trail. Great way to spend Mother’s Day in this chapter of my life.
