A universal woman

A universal woman, painter, free thinker, lecturer, and faithful friend, in joy and adversity, Sofia Gandarias always loved Italy with passion. “Il bel paese” was a source of training and constant inspiration in her work. She exhibited in many Italian cities, Milan, Rome, Spoleto, Naples, Sant Oreste and others. A cultural tour in which she met and treated illustrious figures of the Italian cultural, political and social life. She received offers to take part in films or enter its high society, but chose a demanding and hardworking path with her brushes, without giving up being a critical witness of society.

But above all, her beloved Venice, where she decided to marry and spend long periods. She felt like a citizen of “la Serenissima”, and said that Venice had been decisive in the pictorial career of El Greco and also hers. Mujer universal, pintora, librepensadora, conferenciante, y fiel amiga en la alegría y la adversidad, Sofía Gandarias amó siempre Italia con pasión. Il bel paese fue una fuente de formación e inspiración constante en su obra. Expuso en muchas ciudades italianas, Milán, Roma, Spoleto, Nápoles, Sant Oreste y otras. Un recorrido cultural en el que conoció y trató ilustres personajes de la vida cultural, política y social italiana. Recibió ofertas para hacer cine o entrar en la alta sociedad, escogió un camino de exigencia y trabajo con sus pinceles sin renunciar a ser testigo crítico de su sociedad.

Pero sobre todo su amada Venezia, en la que decidió casarse y pasar largas temporadas. Se sentía ciudadana de la Serenissima y decía que Venezia fue decisiva en la carrera pictórica tanto del Greco como de ella. Al explicar el Homenaje al Greco dijo del cretense inmortal “Cuando llega a Venezia, El Greco es un pintor de iconos, cuando deja Venezia es un pintor extraordinario con los brillantes colores de la “scuola veneziana”, la técnica del oleo y un innato sentido del color. Trabajando in una bottega di Venezia conocerá a fondo la técnica de los grandes maestros venecianos. Hay un antes y un después de Venezia”.

Estoy en deuda con Sofía por su amistad y por haberme incluido en esta maravillosa serie. También Italia por cuanto la sintió suya.
