The layered acrylic that the artist titled verbally as 'Aspen' is signed and dated lower left and verso on the canvas.
In the late 1970s and early '80s, more than a decade before earning her bachelor's degree at the Kansas City Art Institute, Suzanne Pipkin laid to canvas a series of complex works inspired by the energy, color and motion she experienced in her mind's eye when viewing certain objects. Of translating these sensations to canvas she said, 'When I would start one of my layered acrylic paintings, I had no preconceived idea of the end result. I was in the process of experimentation from the very beginning. It began with a single color, which led me to another -
and I was in the zone. As I worked, I was constantly looking to see that the colors were connecting and giving energy to each other, and the overall piece. It was so exciting to see it evolve.'

However, such scenes are still common in the clear water Ozark rivers which remain free flowing. Twice yearly, Spring and Autumn, I have floated those rivers from many years, fishing, camping out on the sand and gravel bars and just watching the river banks go by. The boy in the picture is my son T.P. Benton. Also called 'The Young Fisherman.'

In addition to farming, carpentry, fishing, and the thousand and one odd jobs which everybody does who lives in Chilmark, Gale plays the guitar and sings the songs of the whalers and old-time fishermen of the Island. 9399 :: LEON LOUGHRIDGE (B. 1952) COLOR REDUCTION
WOODBLOCK
'Field of Flowers' (Late 20th/Early 21st Century)
More than just a color woodcut print, this detailed image composed using multiple textures and colors is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right, titled lower center and numbered 1 from an edition of only 13 prints lower left.
The traditional, most often seen, color woodblock prints are made by carving multiple blocks that, when inked separately and pressed to paper one color at a time, create the final image, a difficult enough process. With reduction color woodcut prints a single block is carved in relief to create the image and then the colors are printed in reverse order, the darkest color being printed first and the lightest color being printed last, while also carving away and altering the face of the block with each color printed. This requires a high degree of skill and confidence on the part of the artist who must know instinctually how carving away part of the printing block in between colors will ultimately appear in ink on paper.
Leon Loughridge explained in an interview with Western Art & Architecture Magazine how when creating an image, he's continually carving and changing the block along with the colors; always assessing and evaluating as he goes, adding more and more detail by reducing and changing the block, continually pressing inks; more and more color, sometimes implementing 15 to 20 color runs - and carvings, in order to create a single image. As he cuts away portions of the block, he's committed to the image that results. Knowing how it will play out and trusting his skills are paramount to creating what it is he wants to capture or convey.
Other masters of the reduction woodcut process include Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Kathe Kollwitz.

The model proved to be a win-win situation that lasted for more than 60 years. It allowed artists to earn income at a time when many were struggling due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression, while also providing the general public with affordable access to art. The concept also made the arts more inclusive overall during a challenging period in American history.
