Map Page 70
For more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of this region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to European settlement.
In 1818, Surveyor-General John Oxley brought the region to the attention of NSW Governor Lachlan Macquarie (and subsequently named it Port Macquarie). In 1821 a penal settlement was established for convicts to serve time for ‘secondary offences’. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. It was opened up to free settlers from 1830 with some convicts remaining until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory (Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the Ibis Styles Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery (Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. Early European settlement was, by many accounts, a brutal time for convicts, however it was particularly devastating for the Birpai, who suffered attacks from settlers, exposure to new diseases, loss of their land and disruption to their traditional way of life.
Today, Aboriginal culture strengthens and enriches our community. People who occupy this area are from many different lands and share the values of tolerance and respect of one another. Port Macquarie has evolved, and is now one of the most popular tourist destinations and fastest growing regions in NSW.
Acknowledgement of Country

Be prepared to fall in love with this relaxed coastal and hinterland haven.
Port Macquarie CBD by Remy Brand
PORT MACQUARIE
Prepare to fall in love with Port! Sitting pretty on a unique stretch of coastline, the CBD enjoys views to the mighty Hastings River on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Plus, it’s compact and level, making it ideal for walking. With a population of 55,000 (and growing), it’s big enough to provide all that you need, and small enough to make it easy. From fish & chips by the beach to hatted dining with a water view, our buzzing food and bar scene will take you from sandy feet to stilettos! Port also attracts many events and festivals throughout the year (see pages 20-21), and is a great base from which to explore the region, with a huge range of accommodation.
Port’s Coastal Walk & Beaches
Consistently voted as our #1 rated attraction, our Coastal Walk is really something special. Covering nine kilometers of riverside promenade, pathways, sandy trails, numerous pristine beaches, hidden coves and headlands, you can take a half-day and do the lot or choose a smaller section. There are cafes along the way for sustenance and some great swimming spots as well! See page 30 for our Beach Guide, and 63 for our Coastal Walk map.
Town Wharf
Wander down the western end of Clarence Street and you’ll find a long stretch of renewed, accessible commercial wharf area perfect for fishing, watching the boats, or booking a charter or tour from one of the river and sea-going operators. This is where you’ll find Cruise Port Macquarie (River cruises), Port
Macquarie Fishing Charters, and around the corner (at the northern end of Short Street) Port Jet Cruise Adventures.
Town Green & Lady Nelson Wharf
An expansive, beautifully landscaped area overlooking Lady Nelson Wharf and the river, flanked by bars and eateries. It’s the heart of the CBD and enjoyed by all. Walk, bike, fish, picnic or people-watch! Grab an ice cream and take a stroll, or enjoy a cocktail by the water. Kids will love the new playground next to the giant fig tree (and parents will love the overlooking café). Leashed dogs are welcome, and it’s a popular place for gatherings and events.
The Breakwall, Skate Park & Town Beach Reserve
Loved by locals and visitors alike, the iconic breakwall is an outdoor art gallery as well as a great waterside stroll. Head to Town Beach reserve which hosts one of the coast’s best skate parks, along with parklands, a playground, scooter track and kiosk. All overlooking the river on one side and stunning patrolled Town Beach on the other.
Gaol Point
A spectacular viewpoint on the headland overlooking Town Beach and the river mouth, it used to be the location of a nineteenth century gaol (hence the name)! It has parking, seating and interpretive signage. It’s great for checking the surf, enjoying the views, or taking a wander through the pretty pathways and views through the adjacent Mrs York’s gardens.
The Glasshouse & Port Central
Taking a central CBD position on Clarence Street is the architecturally stunning Glasshouse, home to a 550-seat theatre, Visitor Information Centre & Shop, Function Centre and Regional Art Gallery (see back cover). Across a forecourt lined with cafes and shops is the entrance to Port Central Shopping Centre, which can also be accessed via Hay St and the multilevel car park off Murray Street.
Westport Park, The Marina & Settlement Point
Head west across the pedestrian bridge from the CBD for a few minutes, and you’ll come to Westport Park (home to many major events and a boat ramp), as well as the Marina and Settlement Point Shopping Centre. A short drive (or longer walk/ride) will bring you to Settlement Point, a pretty area of parkland where you can swim, SUP or kayak. Popular with families and fishos, it has picnic and bbq facilities and amenities. You can also take the car ferry across to ‘The North Shore’ from here, a quiet residential area which also has access to popular surfing and camping spots heading north to Crescent Head. Some roads are 4WD access only.
Sea Acres & Tacking Point Lighthouse
Take the ten-minute drive south along Pacific Drive and enjoy the coastal views as you head out to heritage-listed Tacking Point Lighthouse. Still a working lighthouse today, it’s an unmissable lookout and a great whale-watching spot during the season. Along this route you’ll find the popular Sea Acres Rainforest Centre and Boardwalk, a magical 1.3km accessible journey through ancient rainforest, starting and ending with the delightful Rainforest education centre, shop and café.

WAUCHOPE & HINTERLAND
Wauchope
(Pronounced war-hope) - 15 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Surrounded by Australia’s most extensive Blackbutt forest, it was here in the mid 1800s that pioneers made the town famous as a timber town. Today, Wauchope, is a thriving and friendly country town, with a reputation for great shopping, cafes, bakeries, and the Timber Town Heritage Theme Park. It's also an RV Friendly town, and the first Motor Cycle Friendly Town in NSW.
Hinterland
To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise, with farmland rolling hills and lush rainforest. The Hinterland is popular with bush walkers, four-wheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many cottages or B&B’s scattered along the way. See page 29 for Hinterland highlights.
Comboyne
Head up the plateau to the charming tiny village of Comboyne, where you can shop for art and crafts for the home and produce for the pantry. A tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls located about a 1 hour drive from Port Macquarie. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst the road is mostly unsealed, it's 2WD friendly. (allow around 45 minutes for the drive from Comboyne). There is a Kiosk and picnic facilities.

Lorne, Kendall and Kew
Whilst part of the Camden Haven, these three small towns also form part of the Hinterland. Kendall ‘The Poets Village’ - is a quiet village with a population of 250 people located just off the Pacific Highway, at Kew. Its vibrancy, diversity and charm fuel Kendall’s community spirit. Named after the Australian poet Henry Kendall, it is a growing community, with craft and antique stores as well as numerous other tourist attractions. Kew has now been bypassed by the highway, and this pretty rural hamlet has found its groove! The recently restored heritage hotel, 'The Royal' is a must visit, as is their famous Golf Course and friendly General Store.

The beautiful open countryside is a breath of fresh air yet is just 10 minutes’ drive north from town, on sealed roads, right beside the M1. Port’s most-awarded tourist attraction is keenly sought after for its popular pick-your-own strawberries experience from easily accessible vertical frames: seniors stroll the avenues and reach out at arm’s length while, lower down the lattice, tiny tots can too. There’s plenty of grassy space for kids and long-distance travellers to stretch their legs. Berry picking is all under soaring greenhouse cover so wind and rain never matter. Air-conditioned CAFE RED is cool in summer, warm in winter, with both table service and takeaways: budget-priced farm-fresh brekkie, lunch, snacks, barista coffee and Ricardoes’ “world’s best” scones with real cream, lavished with our own delicious homegrown natural strawberry jam. The shop features the farm’s big range of medalwinning sweet and savoury preserves, take-home vegies and produce, souvenirs and novelties: the beautifully-presented preserves are always welcomed as gifts, as well as popular on the home table. OUR KOALAS NEED YOU!
Our Wild Koala Breeding program and Koala Hospital rely solely on donations, sponsorships, grants and volunteers. We would love your help and donations are tax-deductible. You can even sponsor a Wild Koala (it makes a fantastic gift)! Head to www.koalahospital.org.au to donate today.
Can you imagine Australia without koalas? The Black Summer bushfires of 2019, burnt over 1 million hectares of known and likely koala habitat on the NSW North Coast, decimating populations and pushing the species to the brink of extinction. Habitat destruction, road strikes, dog attacks and disease continue to reduce koala numbers and the situation is now critical.
The Port Macquarie Hastings and Macleay regions are home to one of the most significant wild koala populations in Australia, and it’s also home to Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) and our internationallyrenown Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
discoverportmacquarie.com.au 18
IN 2023, KOALA CONSERVATION AUSTRALIA IS LAUNCHING TWO MAJOR PROJECTS:
A world-first Wild Koala Breeding Program at ‘Guulabaa’ 1
We’ve taken urgent action to help save our endangered koalas by developing a Wild Koala Breeding Program, based in the Forestry Corporation of NSW-owned Cowarra State Forest. It has been named ‘Guulabaa’ (pronounced ‘Goo-lah-bah’), meaning ‘place of koala’. Guulabaa is just off the highway near the Port Macquarie interchange. It’s already a popular place with visitors, with Wildnets Adventure Park and the Big Koala Sculpture opening last year. The main breeding facility and visitor complex is due to open towards the end of the year* and will also be open to the public.
At Guulabaa, you’ll be able to:
• Observe koalas from the viewing decks
• View koala care at the clinic
• Check out the interactive, educational exhibits
• Learn about wild koala conservation
• Browse the gift shop
• Indulge in something yummy at the cafe
• Watch and Learn as we prepare koala feed
• Stretch your legs along peaceful, forested pathways
• Bounce through the treetops at Wildnets
• Grab the all-important ‘Big Thing’ selfie with the Big Koala!
Behind the scenes at Guulabaa, we aim to build a large and healthy foundation breeding population with 70 joeys born and rewilded each year by 2027. It’s a bold program that’s too important to fail. We’re collaborating with research teams, scientists and ecologists from Taronga Conservation Society, The University of Sydney, and the Australian Museum. Together we’ll monitor these koalas, joeys and their habitat, with the goal of sharing our findings so they can be used throughout Australia. Without this intervention, along with KCA’s important habitat conservation work, the future of our wild koalas is grim.
OUR KOALA HOSPITAL IS TURNING 50!
Since 1973, our Koala Hospital has treated and rehabilitated over 5000 sick and injured Koalas. Run by a small staff of passionate clinicians and experts, ably assisted by a large army of volunteers. We’d like to celebrate this significant milestone, and thank all our generous partners, volunteers, sponsors and supporters. Without you all, the Koala Hospital could not continue its important work. We will be celebrating during 2023. For info and updates, check our website and socials. →
We’re building a new Koala Hospital! 2
Our Koala Hospital, built in 1973, is the world’s first rehabilitation facility dedicated solely to the care and conservation of wild Koalas. Each year, we treat hundreds of sick and injured koalas, and welcome over 100,000 visitors from all over the world. The humble sheds that house the Koala Hospital grounds in Port Macquarie’s town centre are well past their use-by date. From August 2023, the Koala Hospital will be temporarily relocated to Guulabaa. Hospital buildings will be demolished, and a brand-new facility will be built on the existing site. We can’t wait to see our modern, fit-for-purpose Koala Hospital and Education Centre come to life!
IF YOU’RE PLANNING ON VISITING US IN 2023/24, PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
• We’ll be open to visitors as normal until around the end of this year*.
• The Koala Hospital’s Lord Street site will be temporarily closed during the redevelopment period*.
• Our koala patients will be temporarily relocated to our facility at Guulabaa, and you’re welcome to visit us there as soon as it’s open.
• Please check our socials or website (see below) for updated info.

Each year between May and November, the Port Macquarie coastal region is a haven for whale watching. After a full summer of feeding in Antarctica, approximately 16,000 humpback whales migrate north to subtropical waters where they mate and give birth before making their return trip south. A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an upfront and personal experience in a safe and comfortable environment.
PORT JET CRUISE ADVENTURES
Port Macquarie's position along the East Coast of Australia is perfect for experiencing the spectacle of over 30 thousand migrating whales each year.
View the whales from land! The Coastal Walk in Port Macquarie, the Camden Haven viewpoints and all of the various vantage points along the way offer opportunities to view the whales without stepping foot on a boat.
The whale watching boats based out of Port Macquarie are already so close to the mouth of the ocean that you are likely to be only minutes away from the action. This means you spend more time with the whales rather than spending long periods traveling through a large harbour or estuary. It's just another advantage Port has over most other locations.
HUMPBACK WHALE FACTS
Humpback whales are the most acrobatic of all the great whales. —
A whale's tail or fluke is unique to each whale and is what is commonly used to identify an idividual whale, just like a human fingerprint.
A baby whale is called a calf and weighs nearly one tonne when born. They consume up to 600 litres of their mother's milk per day.
For an unforgettable experience on the water, Port Jet Cruise Adventures has it all. Experience the wonder of the ocean on board Wave Rider - their 18 passenger 900 horsepower super boat will have you surfing the waves and cruising up and down Port Macquarie’s remarkable coastline or speeding along the stunning Hastings River. Wave Rider is equipped with state of the art equipment and technology. Custom-built for Port Macquarie and the ocean conditions experienced here, she will provide the most exciting, fast yet smooth comfortable ride for her passengers. Your skilful and knowledgeable skipper will take you on an adventure exploring rugged coastlines, spotting playful dolphins, sea turtles and of course, don’t miss whale watching season from May to November. If speed isn't your thing then get on board their river boat and enjoy a scenic tour up the Hastings River. Relax and enjoy the comfortable and spacious two level catamaran ‘Essence’, complete with inside seating, underwater viewing windows, covered top deck and boom net. There is a style of ride to suit everyone, whether it be an exhilarating Ocean Blast, a River Cruise (afternoon, sunset or eco), or maybe a Dolphin
Spotting Cruise is more your style. If you want to take control yourself then hire a Jet Ski and zoom around in the 9 hectare dedicated ski park. After years of local ocean-going experience, Port Jet are now custom making a new, larger version of the hugely popular Wave Rider, the perfect vessel for Port Macquarie's conditions. Not only will it have capacity for up to 25ppl, it'll be powered by 3 x 350hp Mercury V10 motors! Book your next function or team building event with them and give your group an experience to remember. (See inside cover)

HELLO KOALAS SCULPTURE TRAIL WINS GOLD FOR ‘TOURIST ATTRACTIONS’ 2022 NSW TOURISM AWARDS
Established 2014, Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail has won an award each year in the NSW Tourism Awards since 2015 but winning Gold in 2022 for Tourist Attractions is “the best of the best” according Hello Koalas founder, Margret Meagher. There are 86 one metre high fibreglass Hello Koalas sculptures painted by local artists on the Trail, joined by The Big Koala, Spirit of All Koalas (2.5 metres high), launched in September 2022.
The Big Koala is the landmark sculpture for the new tourism and educational precinct called ‘Guulabaa, Place of Koala’ being developed by Forestry Corporation of NSW in the Cowarra State Forest, corner of Oxley Highway and Burrawan Forest Drive.
Manufactured by fibreglass specialist John Belfield at Johns River and painted by local artist Pauline Roods, ‘The Big Koala’ features a design which includes 31 koalas living happily in the forest.
It is estimated that in the first month, 15,000 people visited The Big Koala which welcomes all visitors to Guulabaa, Place of Koala. Nearby is the amazing WildNets adventure in the forest canopy (www.wildnets.com.au).
Coming soon is Koala Conservation Australia’s wild koala breeding centre and Bunyah Aboriginal Land Council’s art gallery and café.
Sponsored by Regional Australia Bank, The Big Koala has also been made possible by supporters who have purchased the limited edition of Monopoly Port Macquarie, with its Hello Koalas token, available exclusively from Hello Koalas Gallery and Gift Shop.
A facial cast of this super-sized koala resides in Hello Koalas Gallery and Gift Shop, at 16/10 Bellbowrie Street, Port Macquarie along with Hello Koalas customised merchandise including new products featuring The Big Koala.
There are also 20 Hello Koalas sculptures on display and of special interest is Hello Koalas’ first children’s book, ‘Lola had a Dream’ written and illustrated by local artist Francessca O'Donnell, available in English and French editions. What a Koala Treasure Trove!

LOCAL BEACHES
For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to south-east winds.
Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to north-east winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (Surfing information from PMQ Surf School).
If you are looking for calmer waters and a great place to take the little ones, there are couple of options to choose from - all of which require parent supervision. With its rocky outcrop, Shelly Beach creates a somewhat protected lagoon and is ideal for the littlies. Other good areas for kids include Settlement Point, Lake Cathie lagoon (when open to the ocean) and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan. Town Beach is also good with a long break and plenty of rock pools towards the point for the kids to explore. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Flynns Beach is patrolled and very popular with families. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service. nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Check the Visitor Information on page 65 for info on Beach Driving Permits.

AN INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR KOALAS
Koala Conservation Australia
Limited manages the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and the Wild Koala Breeding Program. This not-forprofit organisation has the wider mission to lead the world in the care and conservation of wild koalas, to increase knowledge and understanding of the species and to work collaboratively to ensure their survival into the future.
Following years of habitat destruction and resulting population decline, the Black Summer bushfires of 2019, burnt over 1 million hectares of known and likely koala habitat on the NSW North Coast, decimating populations and pushing the species to the brink of extinction. Sadly in 2022, koalas were officially declared an endangered species.
If we don’t act now, Australia’s wild koalas could be extinct in 30 years. Our current generation’s kids could be the last to see them.
Koala Conservation Australia is determined to save our Koalas. We are doing this by:
1. Implementing a world-first Wild Koala Breeding Program.
2. Expanding our extensive Koala Food Tree plantations and tree planting program
3. Redeveloping our dedicated Koala Hospital so we can continue to care for and rehabilitate sick and injured koalas.
4. Making Strategic land purchases to conserve critical habitat, and landscape-scale habitat restoration at three highly significant sites.
5. Partnering with experts in the field, including Taronga Zoo, University of Sydney and the Australian Museum Research Institute. The single biggest threat to koalas is habitat destruction, so protection and rehabilitation is a key part of our work. Conservation breeding is an immense, complex undertaking – and the last chance we have to reverse local extinctions and give koalas hope for the future.
OUR KOALAS NEED YOU!
Our Wild Koala Breeding Program and Koala Hospital rely solely on donations, sponsorships, grants and volunteers. We would love your help and donations are tax-deductible. You can even adopt a Wild Koala (it makes a fantastic gift)! Head to www.koalahospital.org.au to donate today.

THE SCENIC PORT MACQUARIE COASTAL WALK
Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easy-grade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.
Starting at Westport Park in town (page 72 map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours.
The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.
The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk, and they've installed maps and signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology.
The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections: Westport Park to Town Beach - 2 km (flat)
Town Beach to Flynns Beach - 2.2 km
Flynns Beach to Shelly Beach - 2.2 km
Shelly Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse - 2.7 km
A few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others:
• Keep to the track and keep away from cliff edges.
• Please take rubbish with you or use bins provided.
• Dogs are not allowed in the Sea Acres section anywhere south of Shelly Beach.
• Remember to take water and have adequate sun protection.
* Hot Tip! Pack your swimmers, or make it a 'Walk n' Fork'. See page 52.

Camp Jordan on the Hastings
Ideally, you won’t have to work at all, BUT… if dabbling in a bit of work here and there means you can stay a little longer, we’ll allow it! Many of our holiday stays, town centres and libraries have free Wi-Fi, and most of our cafes and bars make for a comfortable ‘2nd office’ with good connectivity, great coffee and friendly service. And if you need an office environment, you can always make a booking at one of our coworking spaces. Click on the QR below for info.
WORK-CATION PROFILE: ELISA
Elisa and her family have been holidaying in Port for years. During COVID, she moved to hybrid working arrangements, and started spending more time here, choosing to work and holiday with her hubby Mike (also able to work remotely) and their two kids aged 12 & 15.
ELISA’S HOT TIPS FOR BALANCING WORK AND PLAY IN PORT MAC:
1. Start your mornings outside! The sunrises here are magic, especially along the Coastal Walk.
2. Have a bit of a plan for your day/week. Block out work time, and stick to it.
3. Pre-book activities to keep the kids happy. My kids love Wildnets, Stoney Aqua Park, Jollynose MTB Park, The Seed Creative Workshops and the Surf School. If I need to juggle kids and work, I’ll set up on Town Green, while the kids fish off the wharf or go for a skate. There’s also ice cream nearby so everyone’s winning!
4. Find a couple of locations where you like to work. My fave ‘2nd office’ locations are Bandwagon Cafe, Zebu, Rivermark, Sails, Holy Goat Coffee, Peak Coffee, and Chop n Chill.
5. Try a co-working space! If you need office facilities, book a desk at CoLab in Sovereign Hills, or Nucleus in the waterside town of Laurieton. If you’re planning on working here longer, you can subscribe to the highspec Innovation Hub at Charles Sturt University.
6. Meet the locals – I’ve met some great people through yoga and co-working, and Mike meets with the Sunrise Swimmers at Town Beach, and Park Run (if he’s feeling really energetic).
7. Reward yourself! We’ve got a few ‘go-to’ places (the list is getting longer by the minute): Whalebone Wharf, Bills Fishhouse, Botanic Wine Garden, and Bar Florian never disappoint.
