A little about Discover Saskatoon

I’ve spent years researching the passion and purpose behind what our chefs, food artisans, and farmers bring to the table. I want to share with you what I’ve found.

Many of us city dwellers have rural roots (myself included) and that’s at the core of our city’s culinary story. Combining these agrarian ties to globallyinspired dishes, Saskatoon’s many independent restaurants tell the story of a shared connection to the land with every bite.

Discover places to eat in Saskatoon

It’s no secret that Saskatoon is surrounded by a patchwork quilt of agricultural land. There are also a lot of smaller farms producing food that stays in the province. It’s no surprise then, that the close relationships between Saskatoon’s chefs and producers mean it’s easy to taste our ever-evolving culinary experiences. For rustic Italian with seasonal ingredients and nose-to-tail butchery, try Primal. Calories Restaurant is a local favourite for its organic and heirloom ingredients showcased in inventive dishes. Odla is the city’s truest expression of a farm-to-table restaurant as it’s co-owned by Farm One Forty.

Head to Hearth Restaurant for their interpretation on prairie cuisine, which includes ingredients like wild mushrooms foraged in northern Saskatchewan — you won’t be disappointed. For thousands of years, Saskatoon and the surrounding area was a gathering place for multiple Indigenous nations. My favourite place to experience a traditional foods-inspired menu and learn more about the region’s history is at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Reserve a spot at a summer Han Wi Moon Dinner for a multi-sensory experience you’ll never forget!

Pick up a bag at Co-op grocery stores and gas stations. For more retail locations, visit meatchopscanada.com. Kick off your Saturday night with a craft cocktail. If you’re dining out, Ayden has an awesome cocktail program, as does the Odd Couple, to accompany

your meal. Or go to St. Tropez Bistro and take the stairs up to Parlor. 3.

For me, Sundays start with brunch! Hometown Diner is a popular spot (save room for a doughnut), as is the sunlit, tropical-plant-filled Drift Café. The Capitol makes hearty classic breakfasts. (Go back at night to hear music from local bands.)

Today, Saskatoon is located on Treaty 6 Territory, and continues to be the proud gathering place of the Plains Cree, Dakota, Saulteaux, Nakoda, and Métis nations. As they have for many centuries, these people’s contributions as craftspeople, musicians, entertainers, entrepreneurs, neighbours, and beyond, are at the heart of Saskatoon’s story.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park Wanuskewin; meaning “gathering place,” is a leader in the preservation of history and culture for both Métis and Plains Cree nations. Home to the longest ongoing archeological dig site in Canadian history, Wanuskewin plays a crucial role in documenting the peoples that have called this land home for more than 6000 years. With newly renovated meeting rooms and art galleries, as well as over 6 km of groomed trail, Wanuskewin continues its legacy as a gathering place today.

Saskatoon’s community is perhaps its greatest strength. The people who live here, and those who visit, find comfort at the local hot spots and while attending a variety of festivals and events. Take a stroll down Broadway and listen for the sounds of talented local buskers filling the street with captivating music. Stop in at the Broadway Theatre and catch a film, or if you’re lucky, a live performance. Oh, and don’t miss the Saskatoon Fringe Festival, a bustling celebration

of eclectic art and culture in the heart of Broadway. Enjoy cultural performances, displays, activities, and cuisine at Folkfest and the Filipino Music & Food Festival. Saskatoon has a lively music scene year-round, but things really come to life in the summer. Snag tickets to the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival and enjoy a night of grooving to good music. Jazz Fest pulls in some big, soughtafter names, making it an event that can’t be missed. Taking place across multiple venues in the city, it’s a weeklong celebration of music, community, and fun!

Saskatoon’s history is rooted in the stories of our Indigenous peoples. Take the opportunity to connect with the history and hear the stories of our past and present. Take a trip out to Wanuskewin and immerse yourself in the unique cultural experience. You’ll leave with a better understanding and appreciation of the evolving cultures of the Northern Plains Indigenous peoples.

Saskatoon is stunning in the summer. It’s the perfect place to explore outside along the riverbank and throughout the city’s hundreds of parks and lush green spaces. Whether paddling, biking, hiking, running, or out for walks with friends, the spring and summer months are a spectacular time to enjoy the great outdoors in Saskatoon.

With easy-to-navigate bike lanes, multi-use trails, and pathways, biking is more than just a way to get from point A to point B - it’s a Saskatoon summertime staple. The South Saskatchewan River runs through the heart of the city and a bike ride around the gently sloping terrain of the City of Bridges is the best way to take it in from every angle. During spring, stop to spot crocuses along the paved path near the University of Saskatchewan. The train bridge is a local favourite for viewpoints of downtown Saskatoon at sunset. Bikes can be borrowed for free when staying at one of eight hotels in the downtown core.

Paddling the River On a scorching hot summer day, it’s not unusual to find Saskatonians flocking to the water for a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard down the South Saskatchewan River. Launching from the Poplar Bluffs Conservation Area along Valley Road, it’s a scenic 2-3 hour trip. The Fred Heal Canoe Launch further south is a five-hour paddle back to the city. Paddleboard rentals and guided tours can be arranged at Escape Sports, while canoe and kayak rentals can be picked up at Eb’s Source for Adventure. Biking the Trails

Wanuskewin Heritage Park is a National Historic Site home to a herd of Plains bison, as well as Canada’s longest running archaeological dig site. This land is sacred and has always been an important gathering place. There are six kilometres of looped trails in the Opimihaw Creek Valley to explore. Take an iced muskeg peach tea to-go and plan an afternoon hike up to the “Where the Creek Meets the River” lookout point. The heritage park is also accessible by bike as it’s conveniently connected to the 105 kilometres of trails that make up the protected green space of the Meewasin Valley Trails.

Highlights 1. Walk along the Meewasin Valley and take in stunning views of the river and city skyline. Make a day of it and plan to stop for a picnic along the way.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park is the perfect place to immerse yourself in our rich history.

2. Grab an ice cream at River Landing and walk along the paved path. This area is always bustling with people, and often has events going on in the summertime months. 3. Feel like a kid again at Kinsmen Park. Take a ride on one of the classic carnival rides or just walk around, enjoying the green space, and take it all in.
