New world record
Eliud Kipchoge won the 48th edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon on 25 September in a new world record time of 2:01:09, improving his own previous mark by 30 seconds. He was on sub-2 hour pace through halfway (59:51) but when the last pacemaker dropped out at 25km he slowed a little. Rick Nealis steps down from Marine Corps Marathon
By Charlie BanRick Nealis retires as race director of the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) after this year’s race on 30 October.
Nealis was a Marine supply officer in the early 1990s with a 3:09 marathon best from an MCM nearly 10 years earlier. Despite being a keen runner he first thought of his assignment to the race as a demotion.
“I went from having about 180 Marines and civilians working for me down to three officers and 12 enlisteds,” he said. “It didn’t take long for me to realize the opportunities the race presented.”
When the traditional two-year rotation would have moved him out, in 1995 the Marine Corps decided to keep Nealis on permanently as a civilian race director.
Two years into Nealis’ tenure, Oprah Winfrey’s successful race at Marine Corps in 1994 opened the door for him to work on the torch relay for the 1996 Olympics. While he learned a lot about logistics, he also soaked up the opportunities that sponsorships would create for the marathon and followed through aggressively
“These days, if you don’t have the support from sponsors, you really can’t afford to do the race the right way,” Nealis said. “When you look at the basic measures like closing down roads or having the supplies to keep the runners safe and healthy, it’s hard to think about how we did things in the early ’90s.”
“I try to be very flexible - which you need to be as a race director. You can’t be afraid of change because plans pretty much go out the window when you start up - once everything is in motion, things change.”
Under his stewardship MCM has added more than a dozen other races to the calendar. The current
event series includes several trail races and an array of other road races.
“The soul of the Marine Corps Marathon is Rick Nealis,” said George Banker, the race’s longtime historian. “Since he’s been in charge he’s moved the quality forward, moved people’s confidence in the event forward. The way he leads that team shows up in all of the Marine Corps’ races.
In addition to the huge positive economic impact the race has on the local economy (evaluated as $88 million in 203) the marathon also serves as a logistical assignment for the Corps.
“It’s a chance to introduce the Marine Corps to people on a personal level. For a lot of the public, Hollywood tells the stories of Marines and there’s often a lot of dramatic license. It’s different to showing thousands of people what they can do when they work together to put on an event like this and contribute something to the community.”
Nealis credits fellow race directors with ideas that were adopted by the Marine Corps series but Chicago Marathon Race Director Carey Pinkowski said Nealis gives as much as he gets. “Rick is incredibly generous with his time and experience,” Pinkowski said. “He always makes himself available to help out a fellow race director, whether it’s a World Major or a 150-person local race.” Pinkowski described him as a living resource of the best practices in the road racing industry, and noted his
adaptability and eagerness to adopt new ideas.
“A lot of people wouldn’t be able to stand in his shoes the way he has for so long,” Banker said. “Not only does he have to deal with the needs of the runners, it’s a military event, and I think there’s been more than one time the Marine Corps commandant has asked whether this is the best use of the Marines’ time and effort. Every time, Rick has shown that the answer is ‘yes.’”
“I’ve had a lot of receptive bosses over the years,” Nealis said. “To their credit, I’ve never had any idea dismissed out of hand, and sometimes some of the crazier ideas, like running an urban 50K, turn out to work pretty well.”
The last two years, with COVIDdriven cancellations, have worn on Nealis, particularly having to cancel the 2021 in-person race a month before it was due. The 2022 race, scheduled for 30 October, is set to go off with some additional measures in place.
“I hated having to pull the rug out from under people,” he said. “That one really hurt. I knew that if I didn’t have a live event for my last race, it would probably eat at me until my dying day. There’s something about being on that start line, hearing the howitzer go off and seeing those 20,000 marathoners head out. Even when you’re soaking wet on the finish line and suddenly the Secret Service wants to get the Vice President in to watch his son finish, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

Mirimarathon MAS
Miri is a resort city in the East Malaysian state of Sarawak. The annual Mirimarathon offers races of 42.2, 21.1 and 10km with the objective of fostering a healthy lifestyle and a passion for running among young and old alike.
Miri is a strategic location for a long-distance run with its scenic views along the route. The Marathon route takes participants through the city centre and outlying villages with sea views in between.
In 2016 Imperial Run organised a half marathon, 10km and 5km races and attracted foreign runners from Brunei, Singapore, Germany, South Africa, UK and the US. More than 10 Kenyan runners came over to compete. It was the first ever event in Miri to introduce the convenience and accuracy of electronic chip timing.
Miri Marathon grew out of this event and has been success-
fully organized by Miri Marathon Association since 2017. It has become one of the Great Borneo Series (GBS), held alongside the Kuching Marathon and Borneo International Marathon.
The task is now to re-ignite sports tourism in Miri and in Sarawak after being on hold during the covid pandemic. Miri Marathon will play its part and will continue to offer a healthy living environment.

Dejan Nikolic appointed as AIMS Ambassador
Dejan Nikolic is the founder of the Belgrade Marathon, which became a member of AIMS in 1990. He was one of the longest-serving AIMS race directors (at 33 years) before he took a step back from the race director’s post this year.
In recognition of his long service and association with AIMS Nikolic has been appointed as an “AIMS ambassador” to help represent the Association more effectively.
During the 1990s Nikolic led the Belgrade marathon team through unthinkable difficulties, like one of the highest inflations in history, international sanctions and war, during which Belgrade was bombed. More than once the Marathon faced challenges by some authorities attempting to take it over. Nikolic successfully defended the event and kept it going.
Dejan Nikolic was a member of the AIMS Board of Directors from 1994 to 2001. He received the “Award of
the City of Belgrade” for realisation of an event (Belgrade Marathon) of special importance to the City. The race became the biggest and most important international sporting event in Serbia. Over the last 35 years 1.2 million people have run in events organised by the Belgrade Marathon.
These include special events like
a children’s race within Belgrade Zoo, a women’s race, the ‘Race through History’ at Belgrade Castle, Belgrade Halfmarathon and a night race at Belgrade Airport.
Nikolic has also been an Honorary lifetime member of New York Road Runners since 1990, having received his membership card personally from Fred Lebow.

The Congress, to be held in Osaka from 23–25 February 2023, will be the first since the lengthy Covid period during which travel restrictions made such a meeting impractical. The Congress is followed by the Osaka Marathon on 26 February which as of the 2022 edition was integrated with the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon, the oldest marathon race in Japan.
The Congress programme incorporates the theme of “Designing the Running Future”. Under this heading the subjects to be addressed in each presentation and discussion are outlined. Many of them consider the effects of the Covid pandemic and the lessons to be learned for the future. It is a subject on which members seem keen to compare experiences.

Picture: Osaka Convention & Tourism BureauThe graphs on this page indicate how expectations have been repeatedly confounded by the reality of Covid in each of the past three years.
by Paco BoraoThe blue line represents the number of races each month that were scheduled on the international race calendar at the beginning of the year – the graph, once set, doesn’t change at all, whatever may happen through the year.
The green line represents the number of races actually held each month. These may be either in the planned schedule or after having previously been postponed.
The graph for 2020 shows the immediate and devastating impact of the covid pandemic on the race calendar. Races in January (31 out of 32) were conducted ‘as normal’ before Covid had become a cause for widespread public concern. Only two races were cancelled in February as governmental authorities and race organisers alike started to become aware of the scale of the problem. In March, as lockdowns were enforced as a response, organisers of public events were banned from using any public or private space where people – like race participants – could gather.
In many countries lockdown lasted until late summer of 2020 but from September races started to be held again as regulations eased. This was only in some places and the gap between the proportion of races held against those planned was only partially lessened. By the end of the year though, for the first time since February, December figures showed that the number of races held was more than 50% of the number of races planned at the start of the year (24 out of 46).
Just when it looked like things might be improving the mutant ‘delta’ strain of Covid took hold. Infections increased and in many countries a second lockdown was imposed. Races continued to be held, but more sporadically, and it was not until July that again more than half the number of races planned at the start of the year were taking place (9 out of 15). From that time on the gap between the number of races taking place against those planned has remained much smaller than before, even when the omicron variant of the virus emerged at the end of the year.
Into 2022 the pattern remains the same. The effects of Covid on the international road race calendar has gradually lessened. In May there was the anomaly of three more races being held than the number that had been planned.
The post-Covid running scene is likely to remain different to what went before in some key respects: To mention only two, virtual races are now very often offered as an alternative to traditional in-person events and ‘running tourism’ is likely to appeal less while anti-covid style travel restrictions remain in force.

Spectacular and exciting course in the ‘city of running’
Your personal best awaits
Would you like to race on the fastest course in the world?
Would you like to chase your personal best on long, wide avenues with hardly any bends?
Would you like to do it on a beautiful, sunny winter’s day?
Would you also like to enjoy a weekend with family or friends in a beautiful Mediterranean city?... and after the race celebrate it beside the sea with a delicious paella?
If the answer to these questions is “Yes”, you have an appointment to start the year running in the 10K Valencia Ibercaja on 15 January.
Valencia has been surprising the running world for more than a decade with great race times and the very high organisational level of its events. The 10K Valencia Ibercaja, the best race in Spain at its distance and distinguished with a World Athletics Gold Label, is among them, With its 10K, the Valencia Marathon and Half Marathon and the 2018 World Half Marathon Championships the City sets its standards high in the organisation of road races.
About to celebrate its 15th edition, the race consistently attracts between 10,000–14,000 participants both from Spain and from all over the world. They are all looking forward to beating their personal bests on this extremely fast course. In the last edition runners from 58 nations started the race from the Paseo de la Alameda.
Records are there to be beaten but the world record held by Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto (26:24) and the European record held by Swiss Julien
Wanders (27:13) have stood since January 2020. Besides these several national records have been set in the 10K Valencia over the last few years, including the Spanish women’s record (31:39) held by Trihas Gebre since 2019.
The 10K Valencia perfectly combines long straights, a “very green” course on both sides of the Turia River Garden and a view of the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. Despite being held in January race days are always sunny and slightly cool, ideal conditions for running.
The city offers many tourist attractions: the beautiful beach, a centre full of history, the Albufera Lake and the gastronomic offering of the world famous Valencian Paella.
You will enjoy one of the most spectacular and exciting starts you have ever experienced. Entertainment from Spain’s foremost DJ Chimo Bayo will make you fly in the first metres of the race.
The first edition of the 5K Valencia will be held in parallel on 15 January 2023. It will start 30 minutes before the 10K and is intended to appeal to runners who want to start with an easier distance and for expert runners who are looking for an official time over a distance that is going to be strongly contested in the near future. The organisers want it to be a very fast race in which personal, national, continental and world records will be sought.
Sunday morning concludes with a fun children’s race, 10Kids, in which children from newborns to teenagers can enjoy a wonderful race for the whole family.
Valencia, known worldwide as the City of Running, offers much more than a world class 10K and awaits you with open arms to start 2023 not only looking for your personal best, but also for an unforgettable experience.

Each February Terni gives a warm welcome to visitors from all over the world. They come to visit St Valentine’s Church and to run by the 165m-high Marmore Waterfalls in a unique running experience.
St Valentine Marathon (42km, 21km and 5 km races) takes place on the occasion of the St Valentine’s Festival in February, when people celebrate the Patron Saint of Terni and of eternal love all around the world. Among the shows, exhibitions and concerts organised during the Festival. “Cioccolentino” is famous for its stands full of chocolate products in original shapes and flavours.
This year many tourists from all over the world visited the festival in Umbria, only 100km from Rome, and 20 nations were represented in the races.
A free hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus was organised to connect the hotels with the spectacular medieval villages of Narni, Arrone, Ferentillo, Montefranco and with the Marmore Waterfalls.
The Festival started on Saturday with the opening ceremony of the Marathon Expo at Repubblica Square in Terni. A little train brought runners and their families to St Valentine’s Church. The city was full of stands, historical medieval parades were performed and the pasta party took place with typical local food such as lasagne, local ham, parmesan and Carnival candies.
The race started from the city centre at 09.30 on Sunday. Two thousand runners passed through a huge heart-shaped arch. A kilometre later they ran past St Valentine’s church and could observe the medieval parade. Athletes then continued running along Valnerina, the valley known as the green heart of Umbria. At 10km runners passed by Marmore Waterfalls. In this unique location most of them forgot the clock and stopped to take unforgettable pictures of the falls.
Evocative locations honour St Valentine
The green heart of Italy
According to legend a beautiful nymph, Nera, daughter of the God of the Appenino Mountains, fell in love with a young shepherd, Velino. But Juno discovered Nera’s illicit love and punished the nymph by transforming her into a river – the Nera River at Vettore Mountain. She
flowed downstream like tears and reached the cliff where she had first met Velino. Velino, on discovering this, threw himself off the cliff in order to be united with his beloved Nera. That jump is today known as the Marmore Waterfalls, the symbol of eternal love all over the world.
At 15km runners pass through the spectacular medieval village of Arrone with houses made of stone, old portals, picturesque alleyways and ancient monuments.
At 22km the course passes through the village of Ferentillo, one of the most evocative locations along Valnerina valley where it enters a narrow gorge close to the village. Inside the crypt of Santo Stefano’s 15th-century Church there is a Mummy Museum open to the public.
After Ferentillo Village the gradient decreases and runners are able to speed up. The return journey again goes past the Marmore Waterfalls. This change to the course was very much appreciated and attracted a lot of positive comments from people promising to come back next

and 2015, when she stopped the clock at 1:05:09; or Haftu Teklu (Ethiopia), who beat the course record in the last edition with a time of 59:06. But above all it is a race for the thousands of runners who come from all over the world – and who are the real stars of the event. The experience lived through by over 13,000 participants last year was reflected in the joy on their faces as they crossed the finish line.
The eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona is one of the most prestigious halfmarathons in the world with one of the fastest courses. The 33rd edition of the race will be held on 19 February 2023.
Participating in the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona means feeling emotion and passion. A weekend that brings together sport, culture and cuisine in a unique city full of monuments, art and culture where residents line the streets to cheer on the runners.
At the start line thousands of people from different cultures come together with a multitude of sporting targets but all united, after weeks of training, by their commitment to cross the finish line.
The Barcelona half marathon is for everyone. It’s for the elite athletes who can beat world records, like Florence Kiplagat (Kenya) in 2014
The course takes participants down the most iconic streets in Barcelona, passing such places as the Christopher Columbus monument, the Fòrum, the Arc de Triomf, the Diagonal and the Gran Via. The route through the city is fast. It is also a very attractive circuit that passes through several areas with tourist sights, which always leaves nice memories in the minds of the runners.
The start is very fast, continuing into the Gran Via and from km12 there is a descent for one kilometre to Port Fòrum. The race then goes along the Diagonal for a 3km out-back section. Participants then run alongside the Mediterranean Sea as far as km19 (the Olympic Village)
A marathon for everyone with the commitment to cross the finish line
before the final 2km run-in to the finish.
The event offers top-level services and comprehensive, almost personalised care. There are refreshment points on both sides of the route, a lot of entertainment activities, a runner’s T-shirt and bag for every participant and a medal for the finishers.
Since its first edition the race has consolidated itself, increasing the number of entrants every year. In 2019 organisers had to put a cap on registrations when the field reached 23,000 participants.
The race has been awarded the Elite Label by World Athletics and also won a prize as the best half-marathon in Spain.
A priority of the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona has been to minimise the impact of the race on the environment. Specific measures to achieve this include the use of electric vehicles, zero paper in runners’ bags, a calculation of the carbon footprint and the separation of waste products for recycling.
We would like to share Barcelona with you, the runners, as you are the authentic stars of the event. We will be waiting for you with open arms on 19 February next year.
Looking ahead | 26 February 2023 Kilimanjaro Marathon, Tanzania
Mbio Ya Watu – the People’s Race celebrates 20 years of road running in Moshi
At the 20th anniversary race on 27 February 2022 Tanzania enjoyed a clean sweep of the top positions in both the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon and the Tigo Kili Half Marathon.
“We are absolutely delighted by the Tanzanian running talent that was on show this year,” said race director John Addison. “It was fantastic to have representation in all our events finishing in the top 10 positions.”
Local runners took home top honours in the men’s races by winning both the marathon and the half marathon. The top two places in the women’s marathon were taken by Kenyan runners.
Tanzanians made a clean sweep in the men’s half marathon as Emmanuel Giniki won the title in an impressive 1:00:34, with Gabriel Geay and Inyasi Sulley following up in second and third places respectively in 01:02:04 and 01:04:10.
In the women’s half marathon Kenyan Agness Ngolo finished well ahead of Tanzanian Jackline Sakilu (1:12:16.to 1:14:49) followed by fellow Tanzanian Natalie Elisante in 1:15:06.
Prime Minister Majaliwa participated in Grand Malt’s 5km Fun Run and took this opportunity to address the crowds at MoCu Stadium, calling on Tanzanians to value the sports sector as a key element in promoting tourism and the national economy. The Kilimanjaro Marathon, he argued, helps to promote the country’s natural wonder
All-inclusive
Mount Kilimanjaro. He stressed that the country must develop local sponsors and trainers and urged Tanzanian ambassadors abroad to look for opportunities that will help Tanzanian sportsmen and women in the development of their careers.
This year the Kilimanjaro Marathon attracted 10,000 participants across the three different races, with 58 different nationalities represented. Addison said the focus this year was to make the event more inclusive and hold it over a longer period, instead of just a single race day.
“We moved registration to the MoCu Stadium for the three days prior to race day and started the People’s Expo. This allows corporates to get involved and promote their services and brands. It gave them access to the participants so they could engage with them in a more relaxed atmosphere as runners came to collect their race numbers.
“We were delighted with the uptake of smaller businesses getting involved, and with the entertainment they provided through activi-
ties, competitions, displays, promotions and giveaways from their tents. This is definitely an area we plan on growing as it allows for a greater overall experience during the Marathon weekend.”
Another huge success was the inclusion of Tumaini La Maisha Tanzania (TLM) as the official charity. TLM is a charity that aims to reach every child in Tanzania who develops cancer, to offer them high-quality treatment free of charge along with the hope for a continued healthy life.
Many of the individuals who ran dedicated their achievements to the charity by actively engaging supporters and corporates to donate to them. Through their efforts TLM managed to raise close to USD 10,000 (EUR 9,940).
The donations received will be used to support two junior doctors caring for child cancer patients at the local hospital in Moshi, KCMC. The money will also be used to help support a nutrition programme using fresh whole food solutions for the seriously malnourished.
Addison commented: “KCMC is active along the marathon and half marathon route as part of our medical support team. To run past this amazing medical facility and to know we are making a small but helpful contribution to its wellbeing was of major importance to us. To be giving back in some small way to both the Hospital and the children of Moshi is a vital part of our social responsibility as an event.”
Addison thanked all the race sponsors, most of which have been partners to this amazing race for more than 10 years. Tanzanian Breweries Limited have been a sponsor of the event since inception. “They believed in the race when it only had a handful of participants, they saw the vision, and they helped us grow it,” said Addison.
The Split Marathon started as a local race for regional running enthusiasts but since the redesigning of the race route in 2015 it began to grow, regionally and internationally, to become Croatia’s biggest marathon.
In terms of race starters Split Marathon is not the biggest but, as a fully volunteer- based project, it definitely has the largest heart and spirit.
Split is an ancient Mediterranean city nestling on the Adriatic coastline and offers a unique mixture of historical experiences. There is the Roman palace built by Emperor Diocletian (who chose the nicest place in his Empire to build his retirement palace); French influences (when Split was administered by the French General Marmont) and Austro-Hungarian heritage mix with modern elements from the past and current century. The historical inheritance intertwines with modern buildings in a unique manner, best expressed in the saying that the city of Split was born from the Palace.
In 2020 we made the major decision to transition from a half marathon to a full marathon. Within a year Split Marathon joined the exclusive list of Wanda Age Group qualifying races for the Age Group World Championship, held each year at one of the World Marathon Majors (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York.)
The Split Marathon course starts and finishes just outside the Palace, at the central part of Riva (the pedestrian promenade between the marina and south side of the Palace). From Riva the course leads you through Marmont Street (the main shopping street in the city), into the area along north wall of the Palace and the main city park. Then you step forward in time, into the modern setting of the road which is the city’s main thoroughfare, taking you almost to the edge of the city where you turn and head back.
At 6km you come to a right turn towards Solin, a small town in the suburbs of Split with its ancient archaeological site – Salona. As you continue you pass through the beautiful

turn back for a final lap around the Diocletian Palace to reach the finish line.
Regardless of your race goals our course will amaze you. Friends not running with you can follow your progress as there are check points at every 5km along the course. Real time information will be on our web page.
Split Marathon, in addition to the full distance race, also offers a Marathon relay, Half Marathon and, the day before, the Slobodna Dalmacija trophy – a race for children aged 4–11, dedicated to fighting cancer.
You pick up your bib number about 1km from the start/finish at the “ST EXPO“ in Gripe Sports Hall. At the expo you can stroll by the exhibitor stands, visit Split’s ‘House of Sports’ (the city boasts the highest percentage of top athletes in relation to its population) and enjoy the Pasta Party.
Vranjic peninsula – also known as ‘Little Venice’. Returning to the centre of Split you pass by the city’s newest skyscraper and continue onward to Lora – the largest naval port in the region. You get to run through the restricted naval area and see the Croatian navy’s ships in the harbour.
From Lora the course takes you to the Hajduk stadium where you tread in the footsteps of soccer legends and ULTRA festival DJ stars. After one lap around soccer field, in one of the prettiest football stadiums in the world, the course takes you into the Marjan forest park – ‘the lungs of the city’. You savour the shade of the north side but the real joy starts once you circle onto the south side where you run with high cliffs to your right and with spectacular views of the beaches below you to your left. From here you pass by the marina to the port and enter Riva promenade for the second time. From 31km your journey takes you to the eastern part of the city along the beautiful city beaches before you
Split has become recognised worldwide as a tourism destination offering entertainment, unique wine-and-dine experiences and diverse accommodation. Split Marathon is not only a great race but also a great holiday opportunity.
Feel the excitement of running through Midosuji, the main street of Osaka.
In February 2022, the Osaka Marathon was merged with the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon – the oldest marathon race in Japan. The Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon was one of Japan’s flagship races. It was a selection race for the national team for Olympics and World Athletics Championships and has produced many of the country’s top runners.
By combining these two races that have each separately garnered attention from around the world the Osaka Marathon will have the competitiveness of an elite marathon with the world’s top runners and, at the same time, give amateur runners the opportunity and satisfaction of achieving their personal goals as well.
Since it started in 2011 the Osaka Marathon has implemented its own charity programme.
Osaka Marathon, Japan
A marathon merger
Start and finish right in the heart of Osaka city
The race is the largest charity marathon in Japan with over 30,000 runners participating.
The word “Omotenashi” means “hospitality” and the people of “Naniwa” (Osaka) are some of the most hospitable and warm-hearted in Japan with huge crowds gathering along the road to enthusiastically cheer on the runners.
The race features many water stations and aid stations along the course including the “Maido Aid Station” that awaits runners during the later stages of the race. This aid station reflects the city of “kuidaore” (“eat till you drop”) and offers many Osaka specialties and confections from the stores in the local shopping district.
On the day before the race a Happy Morning Run and a Fun Run for parents and children take place right near Osaka Castle.

Osaka Marathon, Japan
The Osaka Marathon is one of the biggest annual events for Japanese runners, participants coming from overseas and the local people of Osaka.
In Japan it was always considered extremely difficult to hold a race in the middle of a major city but in 2019 the Osaka Marathon was able to achieve what is referred to as a “Central Finish”, with the finish line located right in the heart of the city.
The start and finish venue are set at Osaka Castle Park. The Castle is loved as a symbol of Osaka and it became a motif for the logo of AIMS World Congress to be held in Osaka in the days before the 2023 race.
The race allows participants to run through many of the city’s famous historical and tourist sites such as Midosuji (the main street), Kyocera Dome Osaka (a multi-purpose dome), Osaka Harukasu (Japan’s tallest building) and the Osaka Business Park.
As the Osaka Marathon strives to evolve into a world class race, it looks to provide an unforgettable experience for everyone.
We would like to welcome you to Osaka to come and experience this very special race first-hand.

Women’s running
The road more travelled
When AIMS was founded in 1982 women running long distances were a rarity. Even in landmark races which quickly attracted thousands of participants a relatively modest proportion of these were women. Up until that time there had been no elite long distance championship races for women which could provide a ‘shop window’ to attract women participants.
Gradually that all changed – but not all at once. North America was where it happened first, with participation rates steadily rising to 30% while European races lagged at more like half that or less. One way in which women could be encouraged to enter races was when they were offered women-only events. Some women-only races eventually grew their fields to tens of thousands.
Mahjooks in Estonia was one example and the story of how this event grew from 200 runners in 1988 to over 16,000 in 2014 is related below.
Setting up women-only events was one way in which new participants were attracted into the sport of distance running but the organisers of races that were established earlier quickly saw how women’s running was a growth trend which they could not afford to ignore. Some started to offer women-only zones at the start and finish to make their race more appealing to new women runners.
The running boom hit India rather later than elsewhere but when it came in the early 2000s it impacted on men and women more equally than those places where a gender imbalance had been inherited from earlier decades. Road running in India found its niche between an increasing interest in ‘wellness’ in general and the traditional exercise regime of early-morning walking.
The attitude was that whatever the men could do the women could do as well. It only took a visionary race promoter to provide the means by which the potential of the running movement could be realised for both men and women.
Maijooks – the biggest women’s run in Estonia
By Renna Nelis*The phenomenon that grew from a few hundred to tens of thousands
Maijooks (May Run) is the largest women’s running event in Estonia. From small beginnings – a couple of hundred participants in the inaugural race on 29 May 1988 – Maijooks grew steadily. In 2014 a record 16,299 runners started the race. For a small country like Estonia, it is phenomenal: the population is only 1.33 million (0,7 million women). This goes to show that Estonian women are active and love to run and walk.
Due to coronavirus restrictions in 2020 and 2021 Maijooks was held virtually. Although virtual running was a fairly new way of doing things Estonians quickly adopted it. In 2020 5,716 participants took part in the virtual Maijooks. In 2021 there were already 9,138 active runners, walkers and Nordic walkers participating in the second biggest virtual sporting event in Estonia. It was nice to see
that women kept moving even during the pandemic.
After a two-year break caused by the coronavirus the comeback this year was not as fast as expected. There were nearly 13,000 participants in total but 43% of them participated virtually.
The location of the race – the Tallinn Song Festival Ground – came along with the race name. It is a place by the sea filled with good emotions and great meaning. There are excellent opportunities for movement on the shores of the Baltic Sea and in the green parks and streets of Maarjamäe.
In the first two years (1988–1989), the race
distance was 2km because running was not very popular among women at that time. Running two kilometres was achievable for everyone. For the next three years the race distance was increased to 5km and since 1993 the Maijooks course has been 7km. For six years (2004–2009) men could also run Maijooks on a separate 7km course. In 2021 a 3km girls’ run was added to the Maijooks programme. The 7km and 3km courses can be completed by running, walking or Nordic walking.
Simultaneously with the women’s race there are children’s races offering joy to thousands of kids. A record number of 3,563 participated in 2019.
In 2009 the immensely popular Day Care for Men was opened for the first time. While the women are on the course the men can take care of the children and be active at the same time. In the men’s area you can take part in basketball competitions, shoot penalties, play football, enjoy a hot tub sauna, get a haircut and even buy a flower to give to your loved one at the finish line. But the main activity for men on this day is to cheer and applaud the women.
Maijooks has always been a good start for preparation to the Tallinn Marathon, Estonia’s biggest mass sports event, held on the second weekend of September.
How the race progressed year by year:
Finishers in the very first Maijooks received a rose and a cup of coffee at the finish line. The cup of coffee was special because in 1988 coffee was hard to come by. The aromatic bean coffee was a symbol of the good life so the congratulatory cup of coffee at the finish was a prestigious gesture by the organisers.
By 1990, in just the third edition, participation had increased more than tenfold with 3000 runners at the starting line. Runners were offered food after the race for the first time: Tallinn airport sponsored the event with 3000 airplane meals.
In 1993 the number of participants dropped for the first time. This was due to the tumultuous times and consequent currency changes. Public transportation and petrol
the first of its kind in India to one of the top 10 marathons in the world. The Tata Mumbai Marathon’s transformational journey started a health and fitness revolution that has snowballed to over 1500 road races in India. Having a social impact by raising in excess of USD 39 Million for the benefit of 700+ NGOs, it has created an ecosystem estimated at USD 400 million annually. This iconic event, once again gears up to welcome the world in 2023.
prices increased so much that people from further locations did not come. At the same time the women’s race had become so popular that three men were caught at the start line dressed up in traditional women’s folk costumes.
In 1994 it rained for the first time. In previous years participants had always enjoyed clear skies and warm sun after the race while sitting on the grass eating and listening to the concert.
At the eighth Maijooks in 1995 a separate start group for 400 faster runners was introduced. The first hundred of them received a certificate from the International Olympic Committee.
Timing and number bibs were introduced In the 1996 race – using a stopwatch and a pencil. Only about a hundred participants were brave enough to sign up for the timed event.
In 1998 the race was organised under the Olympic flag and was a part of the International Olympic Committee’s event “Sports for Everyone”.
The Maijooks of 2003 was part of the Estonian European movement campaign. The women’s race was concluded with a grand concert titled ‘Yes to the European Union’ In collaboration with Estonian Post, a special Maijooks postcard and stamp were made to commemorate the 16th Maijooks.
In 2005 registration moved online. Dealing with paper forms was becoming a thing of the past.
Electronic timing was introduced in 2006. The After-race concert was headlined by the Estonian Eurovision song contest winner 2001 Dave Benton. He described his Maijooks experience as “..simply fantastic. I just came to perform, but what I found was amazing! Truly fantastic!”
The next Maijooks – LHV Maijooks - takes place on Saturday, 20 May 2023. www.maijooks.ee■

Women on the rise in India’s road running boom
* The author, Renna Nelis, is co-Director of the Tallinn Marathon and a co-Founder of the AIMS Women’s Commission. The Women’s Commission was established in 2019 to promote running news and initiatives particularly affecting women and can be accessed through the website: www.allwomencanrun.org contact@allwomencanrun.org
Spectacular growth in visibility of women runners
by Neha KandalgaonkarWomen in India are increasingly shedding their inhibitions and overcoming social prejudices to embrace road running – the phenomenon coinciding with the distance running revolution in the country triggered by the stupendous success of the inaugural 2004 Mumbai Marathon.
Until the turn of the century, sighting a runner on the road was as rare as a four-leaf clover. Athletes usually trained in stadiums and the few road races held had only a handful of women taking part – all of whom were typically professional athletes.
The Pune Marathon, established in 1983, is widely regarded as India’s first international marathon, but it was only in the aughts that globally-popular road running caught the imagination of the country of 1.35 billion. This was after Procam International, pioneers in the promotion of road running in India, launched the Mumbai Marathon, the Delhi Half Marathon (2005), the TCS World 10K Bengaluru (2008) and the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K (2014).
All four races have attracted some of the biggest names in the sport over the years – putting India on the global road running map.
As disposable incomes rose in India’s expanding middle class people became more health and fitness conscious. Road running increasingly
became an extension of fitness pursuits across gender and age and triggered a significant rise in the country’s wellness industry.
Road running played a key role in helping more women in India feel empowered and liberated, as witnessed by the significant rise in their participation in distance running events over the years.
Women’s participation more than doubled from the inaugural edition to the last pre-pandemic physical race across Procam’s four events. It is a clear indicator of how more women have embraced the challenge of the sport. A record 11,805 women took part across all race categories at the 2020 Tata Mumbai Marathon.
Road running is now the fastest-growing participation sport in cricket-crazy India, with 1579 timed events on the last count. Without a doubt women have played a significant role in its growth in the country.
From housewives to corporate executives to students, it’s now a common sight to see women running on the roads, with passers-by nodding in encouragement. These are vastly different times from the decades past when women would rarely venture out alone in the wee hours for fear of being ridiculed for running or for safety concerns.
Mumbai resident Kranti Salvi has run marathons both at home and overseas wearing a saree to show that the classical Indian nine-yard drape is
comfortably suited for running for women, while Kiran Kanojia, dubbed India’s first female blade runner, has demonstrated that distance running helps develop the steely resolve to take on life’s difficult challenges.
“I lost my leg in a train accident in 2011, but running gave me the power to become what I am today,” said Kiran. “People know me as this (blade runner), and even I didn’t know I could do this. Running helped me develop the never-give-up attitude,” added Kiran, who has completed six half marathons.
Kmoinlang Wahlang from the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, then 71 years of age, stunned the country’s running community by completing the 2019 Tata Mumbai Marathon in a time of 4:33:55. “I had fallen sick and doctors advised I exercise. I found running was the easiest way to maintain sound health,” said Kmoinlang, who has 30 grandchildren.
A combination of factors has led to the rise of women’s participation in distance running: the growing number of races pan-India, the resultant proliferation of running clubs/groups across the country that offer systematic training and safety for women runners as part of the community. They are also driven by the goal of achieving personal bests in blue riband races.
As a result, Procam’s events have become an annual pilgrimage of sorts not only for runners in the respective cities but also for the growing number of running enthusiasts across the country.
It has been widely acknowledged that the Delhi Half Marathon proved to be the catalyst for women in the national capital to take up road running, and India now has over 30 women-only runs. The popular Pinkathon series was established in 2012 to raise awareness for breast cancer. Women are also increasingly qualifying for and taking part in the age-group categories of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
The TCS World 10K Bengaluru has fielded an all-women pacer team since 2018 that helps both men and women runners in the open category to achieve their personal bests, and women runners have played an active part in
Women’s running
A generation of India’s women distance runners has also drawn from the experience and exposure of the world-class fields in Procam’s events, with the likes of Lalita Babar, a threetime winner among Indian women at the Tata Mumbai Marathon, also going on to win medals at the 2014 Asian Games and 2015 Asian Championship in the 3000m steeplechase.
Ultrarunning is also growing among women. An Indian women’s team took silver behind Australia in the 2022 IAU 24H Asia and Oceania Championships held in Bengaluru in July.
Sufiya Khan created two Guinness World Records in endurance running after cutting her teeth at the 2017 Delhi Half Marathon. The ultra-runner, in her mid-thirties, set the record for the fastest time by a woman to cover on foot the golden quadrilateral, a network of highways connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. She also holds the Guinness record for being the fastest woman to run from Kashmir, up north, to Kanyakumari, the southern tip of the country.
“Running has provided a platform for women to script their own success stories, and it is a sign of a healthy society that more women are taking up sports,” said Vivek Singh, Joint Managing Director, Procam International. “Women are known to possess the strength and fortitude to push the limits, and running is a tremendous avenue to unlock one’s potential,” he added.

Run Mexico perfects self-improvement
When AIMS was founded a little over 40 years ago one of its main objectives was to provide a means by which members could exchange information, knowledge and expertise. A way to do this was urgently needed at the time when the new sport of mass-participation distance running was just starting up.
The sport had already grown very quickly on an international level through some standout races with global profiles. Smaller events were keen to learn from the experience of those they wished to emulate. As it was worldwide, so it eventually became on the national level in those countries where distance running had taken root.
Race organisers at all levels needed a forum in which they could learn from each other. Over the decades distance running enjoyed surges in popularity in different countries at different times. As more of a country’s races joined AIMS they also interacted more among each other and developed national institutions to assist in doing this.
There were more than a dozen AIMS member races in Mexico when they got together to form Run Mexico. In 2014 this group took on the responsibility and commitment to the running industry to collect and publish the results of races held in the Mexican Republic on a monthly and annual basis.
Run Mexico picks up the story:
Up until that time there had been no information in the public domain that showed the behaviour of runners presented with a choice of races offering different modalities, distances and concepts throughout the country. By gathering, analysing and presenting results of all races in a systematic way a new source of information has been generated which is very valuable for decision making among race organisers and all those involved in the world of running.
Between January and March 2020, prior to the appearance of SARS-CoV-2, 241 races were held. But the pandemic then took hold so that in the rest of the year only 16 were run. Over the whole of the year 2020 257 events were staged compared to 2017 formally timed races that had taken place in 2019.
The Covid pandemic forced the cancellation of all mass events leading organisers to hold virtual races instead. In the first quarter of 2020 the running industry fell 80%. In April no races were held and then neither in May and June.
Events were effectively suspended as part of the health emergency from March 2020 until September 2021 when permission was finally granted for an event in Mexico City
Not being able to hold live races impacted in many different ways (economic, functional, technological and organisational): Those affected included more than 150 organisers, thousands of families that depend directly on the realisation of sporting events and around 100 brands and products which sponsor races or have a brand presence as a marketing strategy.
Currently, in 2022, races have begun to project a more encouraging outlook. Runners appear to be more confident about their sport. The numbers show that they are again beginning to register for races and be present at sporting events.
Event sponsoring brands are returning. They are also gaining the confidence to actively support the sports industry in Mexico
There is still a long way to go and many scenarios are still to be played out. “The pandemic now opens up areas of opportunity for creative organisers and sponsors, laboratories, analytics, and insurers; it is a watershed for everyone,” said Run Mexico President Marco A. Liceaga.
“An important factor to consider is to continue to support women’s running. There are already large numbers of female runners at sporting events but their numbers should continue to increase.”
The pandemic showed us that we must be better prepared for the future of this industry. It has huge growth potential because the runner can be the focus of many different services, whether medical, organisational or logistical.
With the motto: “Now more than ever united”, the ninth International Congress of the Running Industry organised by Run Mexico took place on 2–3 May at the GeneVE Museum Hotel in Mexico City.
The Run Mexico Congress is the only event in the country that brings together the main actors of the running industry for the exchange of information and experiences. With the support of its partners and sponsors Run Mexico held its Congress for the ninth consecutive year.
During the event, several papers were presented and a panel of experts sought to diagnose the problems that the industry is currently experiencing, as well as point out solutions to promote its recovery.
More than 120 people participated for two days in the congress that seeks to professionalize the running industry in Mexico. Participants also came from many other countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and Spain. Among other countries of Central and South America different papers were presented that gave the participants more and better tools for the organisation of races.
The inauguration was made by Mr. Javier Hidalgo, Director of the Sports Institute of Mexico City. He highlighted the great importance and growth that running has had in our country. He invited all participants to continue with this great work to reduce childhood and adult obesity in which Mexico occupies first place.
The closing ceremony was very emotional since we had the presence of Pedro Fletes, Michel Muñoz and German Silva who received recognition for their illustrious careers.
