Queen’s Award for EAE EAE has been presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise Sustainable Development. The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the UK’s most prestigious awards for business success and have been operating in various forms since 1966. Awards are made in three categories – International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development. EAE was one of ten Scottish companies to be granted a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2014 and the only Scottish company to be granted an Award in the Sustainable Development category. The Award recognises EAE’s championing of sustainable development and its commitment to sustainable business operations through its introduction of innovative practices such as: n Installing their own wind turbine to

produce electricity for their headquarters.

n Replacing their diesel van fleet with

electric vehicles and vans that run on biodiesel made from recycled waste oils. n Developing a Biodiversity Garden at our

headquarters. n Adopting a Carbon Management Plan to

deliver carbon neutrality across all our operations by 2015. The official Charter of Award and a commemorative glass bowl were presented to EAE on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen by Sir Robert Clerk, Lord-Lieutenant of Midlothian. Sir Robert agreed to make the presentation in front of EAE staff and invited guests at the company’s headquarters in Loanhead. More than 50 EAE staff and guests were able to join them for the presentation and subsequent reception. They were honoured that Provost Joe Wallace of Midlothian

and Mr Kenneth Lawrie, Chief Executive of Midlothian Council, were able to be there. They also welcomed Major Brian Leishman, who was Business Manager of Edinburgh Military Tattoo for 20 years and played a key role in the establishment of EAE in 1987. Other guests included Tom Brock, Chief Executive of the Scottish Seabird Centre (an EAE client), which won a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development in 2013. The company also welcomed representatives from many of their longest standing clients, as well as friends and supporters who have helped EAE over the years. Glen Bennett, Managing Director of EAE, emphasised that the award was not made to any one individual but to everyone involved in EAE, in recognition of their active and enthusiastic support for their sustainability objectives.

Women inspiring Women in West Lothian Over the past 13 years, West Lothian Women in Business has supported women in their professional lives through a range of events and activities. The initial aim of the group was to increase the number of female business owners within West Lothian. This goal has since been reached and the last year has seen the group revisit their aims and define their strategy in continuing the support of women in the local business community. Julie Ellam, Chair, West Lothian Women in Business, said: “When I initially set out in business, the first network I joined was West Lothian Women in Business. “Spending many hours working in isolation at home I found the events a great way to get out and meet other business women,

many who were in a similar situation. The support of the group in terms of business opportunities, shared experience and a listening ear was so useful at that stage of my business.

So what do women achieve through West Lothian Women in Business?

“Now 10 years later I get to take a key role in the strategy and development of the group and hope to give back the same support that I was lucky enough to gain from.”

n Increase confidence

The group continues to run activities that provide role models for their members, stimulate positive thinking, promote business skills, support career development, and provide learning, development and networking opportunities. Members have the opportunity to attend events throughout the year starting with the joint lunch with West Lothian Chamber in January. Other events include the monthly ‘Coffee and Conversation’ and the annual International Women’s Day event. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day was ‘Be Inspired’ and the event brought together a panel of business women all of whom had an inspiring story to tell.

n Raise aspirations n Gain encouragement n Develop self-awareness n Build positivity n Access personal development n Be informed, inspired and energised n Be the best that they can be

The Group welcomes women who run their own businesses or who are in managerial or professional roles, but is equally open to those contemplating self-employment or looking to develop their careers. Saltersgate School scores a double with Midlothian business Leading restaurateur Matin Khan served up a double helping for Midlothian’s Saltersgate School when he matched the proceeds of a raffle at the region’s business awards.

The charity is also appealing for local people and companies to offer their skills in areas like Website creation, leaflets printing and fundraising activities as well as work placements for pupils.

Members and guests of Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce raised £865 for Friends of Saltersgate School (FOSS) at their Enterprise Awards Dinner at The Brunton in Musselburgh. Matin, who runs the multi award-winning Itihaas in Dalkeith and Radhuni in Loanhead, was so impressed with a speech by Stephen Buggy, the school’s Deputy Head, that he offered to double the sum on the spot. Saltersgate has about 120 pupils from Midlothian, East Lothian and Edinburgh with a wide spectrum of disabilities. FOSS fundraises for specialist equipment and respite care. Cheryl Simon of FOSS said: “We are very grateful to Matin for his very generous

There was good news for Matin, too, when Itihaas was awarded joint Best Family Business, with East Links Holiday Park at Dunbar. The category is for “established family businesses across all industry sectors which can demonstrate sustained success across a broad range of measures.” Itihaas is operated by Matin, recently named Scotland’s Curry Chef of the Year, helped by his sons Mujibur (20) and Habibur (18), and his wife Majada.

Leading solar energy generator predicts solar boom in Scotland - whatever the weather Scotland is leading the way in the UK for renewable energy generation with nearly 50 per cent of its electricity needs being provided through renewable sources, mainly via wind and hydro energy technologies.

Despite Scotland’s notoriously ‘dreich’ weather, solar PV cell-based panels can produce significant amounts of renewable energy as they require daylight and not direct sunlight to produce electricity.

However, developments in solar photovoltaics (PV) have revolutionised our ability to harness the power of the sun, making solar PV technology a realistic, cost-effective and sustainable energy source worldwide.

The cool Scottish climate also helps the technology perform at a high efficiency.

For Scotland, solar PV energy generation is quickly emerging as a complimentary local energy source which will help meet the nation’s 2020 targets of the equivalent of 100 per cent of gross annual electricity demand from renewable energy generation. Lightsource Renewable Energy is Europe’s leading solar PV electricity generator, producing the equivalent of enough electricity to power over 200,000 UK households. The company affirmed its investment to Scotland with the opening of its new office in Livingston by Energy Minster Fergus Ewing. At the event, Mr Ewing stated there is “a significant role” for solar PV to play in Scotland.

10

businessconnect

Lightsource has already identified around 70 potential sites for ground-mounted solar PV farms, as well as opportunity for commercial and domestic rooftop solar PV systems in Scotland, which would represent a substantial investment into the economy. Lightsource hopes to invest up to £50 million in the region, although they have stated this figure could change due to the new Contract for Difference (CfD) scheme which limits solar PV’s deployment potential as capacity is likely to be swallowed up by onshore wind projects. On the topic of government support, Mr. Ewing said: “I hope we will see some continuity of policy and not too much chopping and changing.” Nick Boyle, CEO at Lightsource Renewable Energy, said: “The habit of turning on a light, running a bath, or flicking the kettle on is not going out of fashion, and with the UK’s fossil

fuels resources’ being depleted in the next number of years, we need to provide homegrown electricity wherever possible. “Advances in solar PV technology have seen increased efficiency of panels and reductions in manufacturing costs, making solar PV a viable power source to add to Scotland’s overall energy mix. “In just over three years, Lightsource has deployed over £1.1 billion of UK retail investment into the local renewable energy economy and we hope to continue this momentum through significant investment into projects developed in Scotland as well.” Lightsource will develop solar PV projects in Scotland across a variety of installations. These include ground-mounted projects (solar PV farms), commercial rooftops, social housing, schools, and private households. Local community engagement is a key factor during the planning stages of a project and Lightsource has pioneered community engagment within the solar PV industry, building strong relationships with local communities throughout the planning and development process of a project For further information about Lightsource please visit www.lightsource-re.co.uk

Local business on track to expand A local Midlothian business is on track to expand after rising from the ashes of the bank crash in 2008.

After the recession caused the closure of a large client business, which in turn caused the liquidation of his previous company, John Crawford, started Airco with the help of a family loan. In 2010, Audrey Thorburn joined the company as finance director and the company has never looked back. Now, Airco, which designs, manufactures and installs commercial kitchen extract systems has 25 staff and is well on the road to real success. Famous customers have included Edinburgh Castle and Stobo Castle to name but a few. And the business has been successful in accessing funding from Scottish Enterprise – which will allow them to invest around £250,000 on special machinery which will lead to more customers and more jobs for the local economy. John Crawford, managing director, said: “We’re an expanding business, run by local people and we’re really proud of that fact. Every business should have a copy! Peter Bourhill has been publishing magazines for 25 years, and for 10 years was managing director of the UK’s most successful county magazines: Cheshire Life; Lancashire Life and Yorkshire Life.

So when he decided to return to his roots, it was perhaps natural that he would launch Edinburgh Life and the Lothians. Says Peter: ‘Our magazine celebrates the finer aspects of life, encompassing history, heritage, people, places, where to meet, where to eat, what to do, sport, nostalgia and not forgetting business. In fact our most recent issues have covered the Joint Chambers’ Networking Luncheon at Houston House and the Mid and East Lothian Chambers’ Annual Business Awards at the Brunton in Musselburgh. As part of their editorial coverage, they like to feature local businesses that have been particularly successful, have had a significant

impact on their local communities, or for one reason or another resonate with their readership. Edinburgh Life and the Lothians has developed a large loyal following and demand is such that all major supermarkets and multiples stock their title. Many local businesses buy Edinburgh Life and the Lothians to place in their reception

areas and meeting rooms as a simple but highly effective statement of identity and engagement with their community - and the good news is the annual subscription is only £15. Every business really should have a copy!’ To subscribe visit www.edinburghlifemagazine.com or phone 07850 938407

Praise for achievement of Broxburn and Uphall The Broxburn and Uphall communities have been recognised with the top Award in the Great British High Street Awards 2014 in the Villages Category – the only area in Scotland to receive an accolade in the UK competition. Executive councillor for development and transport Cathy Muldoon said: “This is fantastic for Broxburn and Uphall to be recognised for the way that the community has pulled together following the closure of VION in 2013. “Broxburn and Uphall have demonstrated that they are a resilient, innovative and collaborative community. “The support of the West Lothian Economic Growth Plan (WLEGP) has been instrumental in building growth and belief in the area. The partnership approach developed in setting up the Business Enterprise Hub in the centre of Broxburn has been central to helping the communities to reach their full potential and create new opportunities. “On behalf of West Lothian Council and the partners of the West Lothian Economic Growth Plan I would like to warmly congratulate the whole community on this wonderful achievement.”

What is shared maternity leave? It’s the right of parents, but not the obligation, to split 52 weeks of maternity leave between themselves - as they see fit. The Mother must take the statutory leave after birth (normally two weeks, but for factory workers four). The remaining leave can be split - taken in turn or together -

with eight weeks’ notice given. A parent can request leave in on\ off blocks but you do not have to grant this. Only the Mother is entitled to the six weeks 90% of salary payment, with the remaining leave paid at the statutory rate.

When will it affect us? The law came into force on 1 December 2014 but will only start affecting parents of babies born after 5 April 2015.

Who does it apply to? Broadly speaking, this will apply to parents and adoptive parents employed for 26 weeks or more.

How should I handle it? All employers need to develop a clearly worded policy. Much of the administrative burden will actually fall on the employees: requesting leave within required timescales and co-ordinating between employers. You will be entitled to see the birth certificate and details of the partner’s employer and NI Number. Communication between you and your employees will be key. Please contact Ian Pilbeam of The HR Dept on 0845 296 2731, ian.pilbeam@hrdept.co.uk for advice and support.

Open for business The Open Championship makes its five-yearly pilgrimage to the Home of Golf this July and sales of tickets and increasingly accessible hospitality packages are at record levels. The golfing world is looking out for Rory McIlroy to win The Open back-to-back following his triumph last year at Royal Liverpool. Winning in consecutive years has been achieved six times in the post-war period and twice in the last decade with Tiger Woods crowned The Champion Golfer of the Year in 2005 and 2006 and Padraig Harrington matching the feat in 2007 and 2008. Having a European player as world No. 1 always heightens interest and the business community in Edinburgh and the Lothians has certainly been alive to the opportunity of using one of the world’s greatest sporting events as a platform to engage

with important customers and prospects and to reward high performing staff. Major championship golf is a whole day of top class sport to enjoy and also a relaxed atmosphere where talking business sits comfortably. Newcomers to The Open will encounter a bandwagon of would-be corporate hospitality hosts but The Open Official Hospitality Programme is the only ticket and on course hospitality provider approved by The R&A. No other company can offer facilities within the historic boundaries of the Old Course or guarantee tickets. The official programme also pledges a proportion of profits go to local golf development projects providing an immediate legacy of the Championship for young people entering the sport. The Open Official Hospitality Programme offers a wide range of hospitality options. From on-course Private Chalets through to fine-dining course perimeter hotel suites and bistro style catering in the increasingly popular Champions Club. Located next to the 16th fairway on the Old Course, The Champions Club is making its first appearance in St Andrews. Introduced at Hoylake it combines admission ticket, Spectator Village location, exclusive entertainment and all-day hospitality. Dining

is informal so patrons are free to come and go as they please and buying a fixed number of places to fit a rigid seating plan is a thing of the past. Club facilities include a private garden complete with live TV on a giant screen, constantly updating leaderboard displays and a competition putt challenge. It is breaking the mould for on-course hospitality in Major golf and its accessibility is attracting ordinary fans in increasing numbers to enhance their Open experience. Unique to St Andrews is a range of hospitality options in hotels that sit on the fairway edge, the Old Course Hotel that runs along the side of the 17th, and the Macdonald Rusacks Hotel next to the 18th. Hospitality packages range from ÂŁ345 a head in the Champions Club to ÂŁ899 in the Road Hole restaurant on the 4th floor of the Old Course Hotel with its linkswide view and open-air deck. Over 6,000 people will enjoy hospitality at The Open in St Andrews and there is a package designed to meet the needs of every enterprise. However, some restaurants have already sold out on certain days and other facilities look set to follow suit in record time. Award acknowledges company’s commitment Winning the Best Business title at the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce Awards 2014 was the latest chapter in a story that began thirty years ago for the team at ShinEtsu Handotai Europe (SEH-E) Limited. A mixture of everything from a commitment to the environment to playing an active role in the community secured the accolade for the company that began operations in Livingston in 1984 and now employs almost 400 people on the site. The company, part of the semiconductor silicon division of Shin-Etsu Chemical of Japan, uses its Livingston site to manufacture semiconductor grade silicon wafers used in the semiconductor industry to produce electronic devices for everything from mobile phones to automobiles. The majority of the products manufactured in Livingston are exported to mainland Europe but some go to growing markets in Asia. One of the initiatives that impressed the Chamber of Commerce award judges was the way that the company has consolidated its process into one manufacturing building, which has helped to minimise energy and processing costs. The company recycles more than 99% of its waste streams and is continuously looking at ways to reduce energy consumption; 2014 saw it invest in technologies including recycling systems, LED lighting and energy saving motors. John Wallace, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “It makes sense to minimise our energy usage and waste and is something that is encouraged by our Japanese owners. “It makes us operate more efficiently, there are economic benefits and customers recognise what we are doing. “Operating efficiently is something that runs throughout the culture of the company and one of the benchmarks when it comes to assessing employees’ performance is how they help us meet those targets.” Also impressing the judges was the company’s focus on health and wellbeing. SEH Europe is a holder of the NHS Healthy

Working Lives Gold award and has a Healthy Working Lives Team made up of employee volunteers who have introduced many new initiatives such as an on-site gym, on site blood donation, a bike to work scheme, lifestyle checks by Occupational Health, and access to a credit union. The effect of such activities has shown a significant reduction in absence levels from 4.7% in 2007, an average of 2.27% from 2008 to 2013 and a 2014 rate of an average of 1.6%. The loss of staff is low as well. The rate has reduced from 13.95 % in 2007 to an average of 5.3% from 2008 to 2013. In 2014, it is 1.66%. The company also encourages employees to actively contribute to safety improvements via a team of safety representatives and the accident/incident rate has reduced from 37 in 2007 to an average of 21 from 2008 to 2013.The 2014 figure to time of writing is two. Anne Anderson, HR Manager, said: “We have gone well beyond safety in the way we work and extended into a health and well being programme as well. “The Healthy Working Lives programme, which is run in conjunction with the NHS, and is an important part of what we do. Securing the gold standard is the very best you can achieve.” Community involvement was another major reason for the award. The majority of the company’s employees live in West Lothian, which has fostered strong links with the community. As part of that process, SEH Europe is working with Deans Community High School and Bathgate Academy and offer tours of the plant, participates in school events and has interviewed students and given them feedback to help them with life skills. Over the years they have hosted a number of work experience students, some of whom the company has employed. The company has also sponsored the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce Enterprising Schools award for the past two years and won an award in 2013 from West Lothian Council for its links to local schools. Anne said: “The link with the community really began some years ago when Deans School approached us and asked to park their minibus in our grounds because it kept being vandalised.

local because it allows them to understand the culture of the area. “A lot of our management team went to school locally and that helps us be part of the community.” SEH Europe supports a range of local charities, sports clubs and cultural activities and encourages employees who take part in such events to seek sponsorship from the firm. That community ethos extends to businesses as well. To support fellow local businesses, it allows them to promote themselves as part of specially planned events and, where possible, SEH Europe uses local suppliers in its supply chain, and has facilitated a transfer of technology from a supplier in Switzerland to a supplier in Livingston. Also impressing the judges was the commitment to developing the skills of employees, whose talents are developed through training. Indeed, the company is constantly looking at succession planning. Opportunities for promotion are advertised and the company encourages applicants to change departments within their careers. Overall, the awards entry submission amounted to a strong case for success, one which the judges acknowledged. Anne said: “We had been aware of the awards and thought ‘we can have a go at that’. It was the first time we had entered and it was a shock to win.” John said: “The award is a recognition of what we do and everyone is pleased that we have won.”

A lot of our management team went to school locally and that helps us be part of the community.

“Out of that developed a close working relationship with the school. We had always supported charities but this went beyond that.” John said: “We have employed some former pupils. It helps having employees who are

Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards

Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards took place on 5 November 2014 at the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh. This prestigious and inspiring event, organised by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), showcased the exceptional achievements of apprentices and employers all over Scotland and across all sectors. SQA proudly sponsored the Large Employer of the Year category, which was open to organisations with 250 to 4,999 employees. Pictured above is Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive, Gavin Ross Engineering Manager at LifeScan Scotland and SDS chair John McClelland CBE.

Building Strength for Scotland’s Future

LifeScan Scotland Ltd — Winner By providing engineering apprenticeships an Inverness company is tackling the sector’s skills shortage, developing a talent pipeline and providing local jobs for the community. LifeScan Scotland, part of the Johnson and Johnson family of companies, started their apprenticeship programme seven years ago and currently has 20 apprentices. Engineering Manager Gavin Ross believes their links with local secondary schools play a vital role in helping them attract strong apprenticeship candidates. “The apprentices themselves go along and they show their own passion for what they do and their desire to learn and that itself creates an interest in our programme,” he said.

Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive, said: “LifeScan Scotland is helping young people get a head-start in Scotland’s vital life sciences and engineering sectors. Modern Apprenticeships give young people a fantastic opportunity to work, learn and earn and each and every employer who helps a young person to do this should rightly be congratulated.”

BAE Systems Naval Ships — Runner Up Modern Apprenticeships provide one of the Clyde’s best-known employers with skilled, flexible and confident employees. Charlie Murphy, their Apprentice and Skills Training Manager, explained: “By the time an apprentice has been in the company for three or four years they have amassed an incredible amount of knowledge about the organisation, in addition to technical and functional skills - that’s a vital foundation for the future.” Over the last decade BAE Systems Naval Ships has recruited over 700 Modern Apprentices on the Clyde, covering a range of trade disciplines.

Farne Salmon & Trout — Runner Up A Borders company has grown from having six workers to becoming one of the largest smoked salmon facilities in Europe. Farne Salmon and Trout now have a workforce of 650, rising to nearly a thousand in the busy pre-Christmas period. Realising the vital role employees have in the success of the company, Farne have invested in staff development through the Modern Apprenticeship programme. Vaida Petraviciute, Farne’s Training and Development Officer, said: “When we were creating our HR strategy we wanted it to be progressive and provide long-term development and career opportunities.”

Park celebrating 20th Anniversary Pentlands Science Park is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2014 and marked the occasion with a Dinner at the Park on the evening of Wednesday 11th June. Directors, staff, tenants and stakeholders came together to enjoy good food and company and look back over the 20 successful years of the Park. Scott Johnstone, Director of the Scottish Life Sciences Association was the guest speaker and uniquely placed to talk about the Park as a former tenant some years ago. The Park was developed as the new home of the Moredun Research Institute (MRI) which had been based at its former site in Gilmerton Road, Edinburgh for some 70 years. In the late 1980’s, the then Directors of Moredun recognised the need for new facilities to enable MRI to continue to undertake world class research in disease of farm livestock. The land was acquired from the University of Edinburgh in 1991/1992 and the planning, design and development of the Park started. Pentlands Science Park Ltd was set up in 1994 the same year as development commenced. The Park was funded from the proceeds of the sale of the old site, European Regional Development Fund grants, loans and grants from Scottish Enterprise and borrowings flyer-1_Layout 1 24/10/2014 12:00 Page 1

from the Bank of Scotland. There was also invaluable support from Midlothian Council. The farm animal facilities were developed first followed by the main Science Park buildings and the Moredun HQ which opened in 1996. The International Research Centre was opened by Princess Anne in 1998 and the Glencorse Building completed in 1999. There have been further developments since. Moredun staff played a key role in the design of the office, laboratory and animal facilities. Although MRI is the anchor occupier of the site, the Park is also home to some 20 commercial companies involved in both veterinary and human science, environmental services, software development, agri-chemicals and laser optics. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (an agency of DEFRA), is also based at PSP. The Park provides excellent laboratory and office accommodation together with a wide range of added value support services and provides an environment where scientists can collaborate at a number of levels. The Park has enjoyed high occupancy over the years and is a key economic development location for Midlothian with around 450 employed on site. Many local businesses and contractors provide services to the site.

The Park is at the centre of the world class animal bioscience campus at Easter Bush and engages with the local community in a number of ways such as membership of Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce, contributing to the Midlothian Council Sustainable Growth Group and as a member of the Edinburgh Science Triangle. Park Manager, George Walker, commented – “Everyone at Moredun is very proud of the Park and what it has achieved over the past twenty years. It is a beautiful place to work and has a happy and positive spirit which everyone enjoys. It was a brave move to develop the Park but it has proved to be a very successful and effective location for the Moredun Group and for our tenant companies. We thank all of our tenants and stakeholders for their support and look forward to an exciting future.”

Armed Forces seek support from West Lothian firms It might once have been surprising to see members of the Armed Forces attending business events in Scotland. But not any more, for Britain’s military is mounting a nationwide campaign to build relationships with employers and to reach out to their employees. The reason is a redesign of the UK’s Armed Forces which is creating a greatly enhanced role for the Reserves - those part-time members of the Army, Navy and RAF who leave their day job on a Friday and rush home to spend the weekend training as a combat engineer, or a mine-warfare expert, or an air-traffic controller. With numbers of full-time personnel being reduced across the three services, the need to have welltrained Reservists who can step up to the plate in times of national emergency is more important than ever. Gordon Mackenzie, Head of Employer Engagement for the Army in Scotland, said: “Most employers who have had Reservists on their staff have come to realise the benefits their companies get from the significant personal development and skills training the Reserves are prepared to invest in their employees.

winter2014

“But many more employers are unaware of these benefits and might see Reserve service as a distraction or a threat to their business. Some Reservists even keep their service a secret from their employers in case it damages their prospects. That’s why we are working very hard now to engage with employers, to illustrate the benefits, and to build long-term relationships with them,” he said. “We are asking employers not just to express their support, but to make it tangible through measures such as allowing Reservists leave to attend annual training, or allowing us to explain the Reserve offer on their premises. “The dynamics of defence are changing, and in the future engagement between employers and the military will absolutely become routine business.” The Army alone seeks 30,000 trained Reservists across the UK, around 4500 of them in Scotland Brigadier Paul Harkness, who commands most Army units in Scotland and who attends many employer-focused events, said: “The relationship between employer and the reservist has never been more important.

Martin Borland is one of the first to agree, for the Kilmarnock 23-year-old Reservist with the Royal Engineers is convinced his prospects are already enhanced. “I’ve learned lots of new skills: teamwork being one of the most important because it gels the organisation together,” he said “Having trained in adverse circumstances, I’ve come to appreciate the value of a cohesive team, and I’ve now developed a keen set of people management skills which put me head and shoulders above the competition.” For Reservists like Martin, the benefits are clear – challenging training, a secondincome, skills and experience, and a lot of fun. And as employers of Reservists get high-calibre employees with transferable skills, strong values and professional pride, it’s a win-win situation. If you are interested in talking about encouraging a Reserves team in your company, contact Lt Col Gordon Mackenzie, Head of Employer Engagement. Tel 07802 827783. Email: 51X-Emp-Engt-SO1@mod.uk

“The increased part the Reserves will play in defence of the UK provides significant opportunities for both. It is a symbiotic relationship, because both parties gain from the world-class training delivered by the Royal Navy, Army, or Royal Air Force.”

Ewan A Menzies

MEMBER CLOSE-UP Company Name: Castle Strategy Name: Ewan A Menzies Position: MD Website: www.castle-strategy.co.uk What are the main activities of your business? We help business owners ‘Bring their Future Forward to Now.’ Typically they are looking for more money, time and fun in their business. How we achieve this is unique for every business we work with. Are you enjoying what you do every day? What is not to enjoy about delivering people’s dreams! Being told by a client they have more than doubled their profits for the third year in a row is a great feeling. Or supporting a client to take steps so they can have a whole month in Australia to visit family for the first time, it is fantastic to see. As a business person, describe your three main qualities? Being able to effectively communicate with people, seeing what makes a business really work and being able to join up all the dots in a business so that it works. What has been your most satisfying moment in business? Standing with a business owner at a team meeting, after some of the toughest times he had ever had in business, as he announced all staff were going back up to their normal pay, getting a £1000 Christmas bonus and that their futures were secure at the company.

What is your favourite way to unwind? Getting out on my bike. Since I sit in front of a computer most of the work week, there is nothing better than heading out on my bike. After a few miles of pedalling my mind clears and I enjoy the scenery around Linlithgow and the Forth. If you could choose anyone, who would be your fantasy dinner party guests and why? It would have to be Tim Ferris because his book ‘The 4 Hour Work Week’ changed my life. He is obsessed with accelerated learning and has applied his principles to everything from martial arts to Latin dance to languages. There would never be a dull moment with him at the table!

What do you see as your job’s biggest challenge?

What advice would you give to others who trying to be a success in business?

Learning to take time off! This is the same for most of my clients. When you get momentum going and the success that comes with it you don’t want to stop. It sounds crazy but you plan an afternoon off to do something and when it comes round you find yourself wanting to keep working, a 1pm finish moves to 2pm or you just keep going right through.

Provide outstanding service and over deliver (results) for your clients. Most companies believe they do this but in my experience with closer inspection they realise they don’t. If you can successfully do this you can become the preferred supplier in any industry, win new business from referrals and charge the most!

If you could turn the clock back, what would you have changed about your business career?

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Before I left my ‘job’ I would have started a part time business. It is a big jump to move from full time employment (salary) to a business with no clients overnight!

Owning a number of online based businesses and working with like minded business owners. Also, running my businesses remotely while I travel or spend time living in other countries.

Being told by a client they have more than doubled their profits for the third year in a row is a great feeling.
