we are a part of one organization, united as one, we will learn from each other and achieve our goals.

Commitment, dedication and the willingness to succeed is the order in which we will operate for the new Toastmasters year. Being aware that Toastmasters is a voluntary non-profit organization, the members have all joined with a goal in mind to achieve and the District leadership is here to serve you and help you map out a plan to achieve that goal. We want to equip you to lead from a position of strength.

Everybody loves a party and Sunset Speakers Toastmasters Club

and tasks. We plan to keep the entire District informed of all the happenings throughout the District and reward high achievers and shining stars.

We want our team, which includes each member of District 47, to focus on the 4 Critical Success Factors.    

Let us keep in mind the Competent leaders, Advanced leaders and Distinguished Toastmasters awards as well. We are seeking to achieve excellence in District 47, to surpass the goals given to us by Toastmasters International. To meet this challenge, as a team we must all work together towards one common goal. It all members are no different!

Sunset Speakers turns 10 this month and to celebrate a club that went from 5 members to 23 in a few months was indeed a milestone.

Invitees included the Division "D" Governor, Dave Clarke, the Division "B"

stems from the membership, when a member is successful, the club, the area, the division and by extension the district will ultimately be successful.

As of July 1, 2008, District 47 is no longer the District 47 that we all knew 2008; we have maintained the number but in reality we are a new District made up of more than 200 clubs compared to 360 in the past. This by no means should deter our vision and the mission of the Toastmasters program. We are privileged to have this awesome opportunity as the first team and membership to take a newly realigned District 47 through a successful year which began July 1, 2008. ▄ Governor, David Jess, former members Andrew Brown, Sheila Zayas and Beverly Lerner to mention a few.

Outgoing President David Owen delivered a sincere speech, reminding us that it was because of the efforts of the members why the club is alive and well today. The incoming President, Hieu Huynh gave his (Continued on page 3)

Many members received their Competent Communicator pins. Resounding applause shook the walls at the sight of this great accomplishment.

We found one of the club’s sponsors, Diana Loy of Greenacres, Florida, who dedicated her time in creating the club 10 years ago. She was happy to be awarded a plaque on behalf of our Club. Our club

had been represented at different levels of competition in Toastmasters International and one such member delivered his latest winning speech .

Ricardo Dawkins brought tears to his mothers eyes as he spoke about the ridicule he endured in primary school in Jamaica , which made him the man of high morals that he is today. Our entertainment segment was hosted by a former member, Bob Pauley of Lake Worth. He

had volunteers “do what they always wanted to do without the fear of failure”.

Our fearless volunteers got standing ovations!

A good time was had by all, with lots of food, fun and friends the night was a complete success.

I‟m usually all about business, so I figured I would share with you some other sides of me you may not know.

I‟m proud of my Swedish heritage. I believe most of you have tasted some of the goodies I bring to larger events.

I don‟t cook, unless I have to. Growing up, I played a sport that‟s not very common in the United States – team handball. I studied/ played piano for 8 years as a child but unfortunately, I haven‟t played much as an adult. I have been fortunate enough to visit 66 countries around the world as a direct result of my

In 2008 we will spend much time focusing on EDUCATIONAL GOALS. By following educational goals, we develop ourselves as speakers and leaders. We also lead, by example, the newer members who emulate us and ultimately we graded on the District‟s measuring scoreboard. The Distinguish Club Program goals are easy to reach for the most part and every club should at least have 4 Competent Communicators.

Did you make Toastmaster Resolutions? by Phyllis May, DTM As we begin a new Toastmasters year, it’s the appropriate time to feel pressured. Many of our clubs have Happy New Year meetings to celebrate our successes of the past year and to encourage everyone to set a Toastmaster goal for the “new” year…as our new officers set club goals for the year. With “real” New Year resolutions, how many of you make the same, or a variation, resolution every year? Yet, within a short time, most of the resolutions are forgotten until the end of the year when they ceremoniously re-surface.

Let’s have our Toastmasters New Year Resolutions have some shelf life. After all, those resolutions are not only for you but for your club.

According to AARP, women are more likely to make a resolution but men are more likely to stick to it.

I am not one of those women. It’s been many years since I made a NYR. Why? After so many years, I was pretty sure that it was just an exercise in doing what was expected but I was pretty sure I wouldn’t accomplish it.

But I constantly set goals and I constantly accomplish most goals I set.

It doesn’t have to be at New Years but whenever you do it or whatever you call it, there are certain keys to successfully accomplishing your outcome.

 Be realistic and practical. Know that what you’re hoping to achieve is doable and reasonable for you so that you’re not defeated before you start.  Identify the big goal but you’ll be overwhelmed if you don’t break it down further

Break down the goal into smaller ones and then break those down even more. The smaller you can break things down, the more likely you will accomplish the big one.

Rory Cohn, author of “Take Ten”, says that only spending 10 minutes a day on your mission is a commitment that will ultimately lead to the completion of your action.

How does all of this affect you as a Toastmaster? Our Toastmaster year is now just beginning.

that your club will receive the Distinguished Club (DCP) recognition. Your club goals, however, are dependent on your personal Toastmaster goal(s).

Your club can’t achieve the club goal unless you carry through with what you indicated you would do. Meeting your personal goal gives you personal growth…the reason, I assume, that you joined. But meeting your personal goal then helps your club (which helps our area, division and district). Every level has a goal but they all begin with YOU.

What are your personal Toastmaster goals for 2008-2009?

As Karen Carpenter sang, “We’ve Only Just Begun”.

Have a plan. Set doable goals…goals that are realistic and can be broken down into smaller “chunks”. Checking off the “chunks” will eventually mean you accomplish your goals. Those goals then help the club become a Distinguished Club. Your club’s success helps the area success and on and on. But it starts with you setting your personal Toastmaster goals.

TREASURER’S CORNER My name is Jeanine Kinsey, and I am a member of Club Awesome and Broward Advanced Toastmasters in Coral Springs. I have worked as a bookkeeper for the last 15 years, and recently started my own business. I look forward to serving as your District Treasurer this year.

You can find great information and helpful forms on the district website in the Treasurer's Corner , including the 2008-2009 Reimbursement voucher. District officers should not spend money without prior approval from the District Governor, and all reimbursements must be made by check after I receive a completed Reimbursement Voucher and receipts.

Our primary focus this year is to give Toastmasters, throughout the district, as much exposure as possible. In that regard, we will showcase your articles whenever you send us one -furthermore, we will post your stories and event recordings on the district’s website. In addition, we are creating the first ever District 47 Speaker’s Bureau and you will have the opportunity to get public speaking leads directly from the district! Soon, we will

have attended training. You should have your bank account signature cards updated by now and have put together your budgets. September is just around the corner, so start planning how you will be reminding your club members about Dues Renewal. I encourage you to start before the end of August so that you can submit your first round of dues early in September. As I attended trainings this summer, I had a couple of things that came up that I thought I would pass along to you. * If you are ordering trophies from somewhere other than Toastmasters International, you cannot use the TI logo. This is a trademarked item and cannot be used without TI's approval. TI offers several very nice, reasonably priced trophies and will engrave them for you. Don't get

Re-alignment of our new District 47 Due to rapid growth of Toastmasters clubs in District 47, it became necessary to split and create a new District District 84. Our old district was the largest district in the world. In order to improve service to our members, a decision was made to split the district.

This happened on July 1st, 2008.

With the split came the reorganization of our divisions and areas boundaries.

All divisions and areas may not see changes but some will see a completely new landscape. ▄ Division A is on the southwest coast of Florida, serving Collier, Lee and Charlotte Counties. With 3 Areas there is lots of room for growth.

Now is the time for us all to begin to prepare for our 2008 Fall Contest series, at all the different levels.

Club Area Division District

judges that are NOT from the same club as any of the contestants. This is a smart suggestion. TI also suggests a minimum of five (5) judges at the club and area level, seven (7) at the division level and nine (9) at the district level. You do want to make sure that the best speaker moves forward to the next level, not the most popular one.

There are many places to look to find solid resources to help you plan your contests. First of all, order your Contest Kit from Toastmasters online – www.toastmasters.org Look for “Shop” and search for “Contest Kit”. Order yours today!

District 47 Procedure for trophies

In order to develop a proper relationship between the sizes of speech contest trophies so that the relative prestige of the contest is reflected by the trophies, the following is established for any speech contest whose winners could become a contestant in one of the four District contests.

Provided the wo rd, “Toastmasters” or “Toastmasters International” appears on trophies presented at any club, area, division or district level contests, the trophies must be purchased from Toastmasters International. It is a copyright infringement if trophies are purchased by a vendor other than TI and the words “Toastmasters” or “Toastmasters International” appear on them.

First Place trophies at club level should not exceed a max. height of twelve (12) inches.

First Place trophies at area level should not exceed a max. height of fourteen (14) inches.

First Place trophies at division level should not exceed a max. height of sixteen (16) inches.

First Place trophies at District level should not exceed a max. height of eighteen (18) inches. ▄
