Calgary 2008 Pomp and Ceremony

By Kim Green, ACS/ALB Two Royal Canadian Mounted Police, wearing their scarlet tunics, (without their horse mounts of course) escorted the Toastmaster members at the start of the flag procession during the Opening Ceremonies.….and they did it in regal fashion, eh? This parade of flags at the Telus Convention Center in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada, went on for over an hour. What a dazzling array of Toastmasters banners from all over the world! Toastmasters International is truly "international"! Meeting people from so many places was very enthusing, as was the program.

A Message From District 47 Governor, Antionette Fox, DTM Greetings My Fellow District 47 Members, It's October 1 and we have come to the end of our first quarter. We are well on our way to a successful year. Toastmasters International has given us some goals. We are mandated to achieve them and they name them the ** FOUR CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS**. We have until June 30, 2009 to achieve them. They are: (1) Competent Communicators (2) Advanced Communicators (3) Membership Dues which are due

by October 1, 2008 and (4) Paid Clubs.

The Lieutenant Governor Education and Training is responsible for overseeing the first two goals and the Lieutenant Governor Marketing the latter two. They will focus on these ―Four Critical Success Factors‖ throughout the year to see what we are doing relative to these awards. We assure you that your award is not going unnoticed; our hardworking members are truly appreciated. Special congratulations to all of you who have achieved an award to date, we truly appreciate your efforts.

We are a part of an extraordinary organization and a longstanding one around the world. The International President Jana Barnhill's theme this year is ―Courage to Conquer‖. We in District 47, I am confident, have the ―Courage to Conquer‖

anything that we set out to achieve, this being above and beyond the goals given to us

by Toastmasters International but our stretch goals as well. Your District Team is here to serve you, the membership, and help you to accomplish your goals.

As we prepare to take on the second half of the Toastmasters year, remember and focus on the reason why you joined Toastmasters in the first place. We all joined based on a specific need and desire and with a goal in mind. Did you join because you feared public speaking or was it to polish up on some of those techniques that you already had? Whatever the reason, focus on that goal and mark out a plan to achieve it. You can achieve your Competent Communicator or Advanced Communicator award, or that Competent Leader or Advanced Leader award and the ultimate the Distinguished Toastmaster Award. If you have completed all of them already, guess what? You can do them again. There is no limit to how many times you can go through the manuals and achieve these goals. You should never be too busy for self-development, but most of all you can have ―FUN‖ in this program.

I encourage you to run with our International President‘s theme of having the ―Courage to Conquer‖ during this Toastmasters Year and United….. We will learn with Toastmasters.

Calgary 2008 I ask you, what would lead you to spend a tidy sum, travel to a foreign country miles from home, and for no other reason than to see 10 of the best speakers in the world? For me, it was inspiration! Pure, inspiration!

That is what lead me to do just that thing – venture to Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the 77th Annual Convention, August 2008.

There were three days of educational sessions We had our choice of communication, skill building, leadership, and club and district success track workshops. Celebrated Canadian mountaineer, Laurie Skreslet was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremonies. It was amazing! International Toastmaster President Chris Ford reported on the success of the past year.

The accommodations were superb. I enjoyed an enchanting tour to Banff National Park in the beautiful mountains of the Canadian Rockies and another tour of the city of Calgary. The weather was agreeable the entire time. What better time to spend in Canada than in the middle of summer.

I heard reports from other members about the previous year‘s 76th annual convention in Pheonix, Arizona. They went because Jim Bussey, a West Kendall Toastmasters Club #8370 member, was a Finalist last year in 2007.

Let me tell you how the adventure starts.

First, it begins from the moment you log on to the Toastmasters International webpage and register on-line. From there it was a non -stop whirlwind of activity. Tuesday, August 12 through Saturday, August 16th. Tuesday we see the Inter-District Contest, where District winners from all the Districts outside of North America compete, in one of two separate contests, for a spot in the International Contest the next Saturday.

Now, if I suggest that you could spend a reasonably inexpensive, possibly taxdeductible sum, and travel not too far from home, to the northeastern United States, and have a really great experience, would you go?

Consider the 78th Annual in Mashantucket, Connecticut in 2009; or the 79th Annual in Sydney, Australia in 2010 or the 80th in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2011.

the possibility of attending next year’s International Conference. It is truly possible that you could attend. The 2009 International Conference is in Connecticut a short drive from New York City. Flights to LaGuardia or Newark are cheap, registration reasonable and accommodations affordable! GO!! Take two or three days off and GO!!

The chart at the end of the following page shows educational awards that have been recorded on TI’s database for our District. Notice the totals in the blue column. Next, is District 47’s Educational Goals, as per TI’s district requirements. On the far right, are our “stretch goals” referred to in your LGET, Kristina Kihlberg’s article above the chart. With about three months passed, we are at 27% of our district goal; but we are at 22% of our STRETCH goal. Why not organize a SPEAK-A-THON and finish some more manuals? Better yet, have somebody make the Speak-a-Thon his or her High Performance Leadership Project and we will increase our Leadership Excellence numbers also shown below. So far, in District 47 only eight members have finished, and sent in, their H.P. Leadership Project.

Why not make yours next? There is something there to learn!

From DTM Kristina Kihlberg our District 47 LGET I'm writing this while sitting at the airport in Barcelona, Spain, waiting for my family from Sweden to fly in.

It's Friday and the updated reports will be published soon. I can't wait. I'm on vacation from work, but not from Toastmasters, not yet. I do have yesterday's Educational Awards with me—all four pages. We have done really well so far! We have about 20 Clubs that already have achieved 2 CC's and/or 1 AC. We even have 3 Clubs that achieved 4 CCs and 2 ACs - we are on our way!!

Every year Toastmasters World Headquarters (WHQ) gives us goals that we need to achieve as a district during the year. LGET is responsible for two of these four goals - CCs and ACs. We are to achieve 327 CCs and 93 ACs. To date we have achieved about 22% of each of these two goals. This is about a quarter of the year's goal and we are almost at a quarter of the year. We are pretty much on target, but let's not stop now.

District 47 has also set STRETCH GOALS.. We want to reach 400 CCs and 120 ACs. Can we do that? We are convinced that our members can easily handle this goal as well. Let's step it up a notch.

BAM! (For all you food channel junkies out there). To date we barely achieved this goal.

We may be doing great with the educational goals, but we are behind with the training of the Club Officers. As a District, we are expected to achieve at least 80% of the Club

Officers trained.

I ask that you all check your DCP report and make sure that the number of Officers show as trained is correct. If not, please contact your Area Governor and/or Division Governor to get it corrected.

We all know that when we take on the role as a leader in the Club, we commit to certain responsibilities. The members are relying on us and trusting that we will perform the role to the best of our knowledge. The knowledge for the role comes at the training. The training we get to do twice a year; brings us a lot of fun, networking opportunities and of course the chance to see our old Toastmaster friends and meet new ones.

Plan to attend the Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) in January. Stay tuned for more details in the next Sunshiner.

The next big event that the LGET is responsible for is the Fall Conference. This will be an outstanding event; we have a great team putting on a fantastic show for District 47. Please read more about it in the following pages.

Two Toastmasters Win Prestigious Titles Sheila Vitiello, DTM, Mrs. Florida 2008/09 met Theorelle D. Nottage, CC, CL and Miss Toastmasters Bahamas 2007-2008 at the District 47 final Spring Conference 2008 in Jacksonville, Florida.

TM Nottage is a member of the New Providence Branch of Toastmasters Club 3596 in the Bahamas. TM Vitiello is a 11 year member of Achievers 2903 in Coral Springs, and also a member of the Conquerors 1066 in Orlando.

In 2007 TM Nottage won the 4th annual "Miss Toastmasters Bahamas". This contest is judged upon business and formal attire, public interview, speech presentation and an impromptu question. TM Nottage won Best Interview, Best Table Topics Answer, Peoples Choice, Miss Photogenic and Miss Popularity. TM Nottage serves for one year as an ambassador for the Bahamas Toastmasters Club. This young lady hopes to inspire others through her communication skills. TM Nottage is a Forensic Scientist with the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The 2008-2009 Toastmasters Bahamas Pageant will be held on October 6, 2008 for all young ladies interested.

The Mrs. Florida contest was held on March 29, 2008 with ladies from all over Florida competing.

TM Vitiello was Mrs. Broward County. The ladies were judged in four categories, interview, evening gown, swimsuit, and on stage question, an impromptu question like Table Topics. It was the same as any Miss USA pageant that you would see on television. TM Vitiello won Interview, On Stage Question and Miss Congeniality. In June of 2008 TM Vitiello went on to compete at the Nationals where she was first runner up to the National crown. There she won the Swimsuit Fitness Award and Best Press Book. She is serving her state for one year and has already met with Florida's Governor, Charlie Crist, Olympian Dara

Torres, will be viewing the October launch of the Space Shuttle and will be going to the White House in November. TM Vitiello coaches Miss USA young ladies and has 28 titles that she has accumulated over the years. She attends Broward College and her son David Young, also in Toastmasters and the Area 20 Governor, attends Florida Atlantic University.

These two ladies exemplify the Toastmaster ideals in the fact that they are striving to excel in their communication skills and it seems that pageants are the perfect medium for these skills.

This Is The Way We “DOUBLE OUR SIZE” (In Three Years)

Introducing the ―SOON-TO-BE‖ Homestead Toastmasters Club meeting at the Redland Hotel, on the corner of Flagler Avenue and Mowry Drive, Tuesday mornings, at 7:30am for one hour. On Tuesday, August 26, 2008, myself and another South Dade TM, Yvette Doherty, began the quest to ―DOUBLE OUR SIZE‖ by chartering a new club in Homestead, Florida.

Prior to that day, we delivered fliers and posters around town. We visited different organizations such as the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Soroptomist Club and many local businesses.

We have had several people assist us from other local clubs. For one, our Area Governor, Kathy Dyke, has twice been an evaluator at two different meetings. Phil Stamatyades, a new DTM from the South Dade Club has been an strong advisor. We appreciate their help. Others who helped include Jason Smith and Sandy Liebowitz.

As of the writing of this article on September 19, 2008, we have had four demonstration meetings and we have heard 5 Ice Breakers.

This process has been very fulfilling and rewarding. Seeing the interest in people wanting to improve or enhance their speaking, listening and leadership skills and knowing that Toastmasters will definitely give them the tools, is a great feeling.

Ann Quinones joined in 2002. She is in sales and credits Toastmasters for improving her communication skills by being more aware of er‘s & ah‘s, getting to the point, and being a better listener.

Our goal is to have a strong club, with a full slate of officers, and full participation in contests, and a solid mentoring program.

I am confident that we will be successful.

Toastmasters is an amazing organization.

Isn’t Toastmasters Great!

You are so lucky that you discovered Toastmasters!

I and my son Fredrik have been a member of Toastmasters for almost three years and we have both benefited tremendously by taking active part in the broad programs Toastmasters has to offer. What a difference we can see in new members, who sign up for Toastmasters when they start working on their CC:s (the first ten speeches) and then, after a couple of months, make superb speeches. I wish we had videos of new members in our club when they did their ice breaking speeches and then film them again later. A world of difference!

I love the true mission statement of Toastmasters: To foster self-confidence and personal growth. I think all schools in the country should have mandatory lessons based upon the Toastmasters programs. We all do presentations every day, even if we only speak to one person, that is also a speech.

We need to learn leadership skills and Toastmasters provides us with that. Some schools have Speech & Debate Clubs and that is good but only a fraction of the students attends.

The concept of Toastmasters is so brilliant that it is astonishing. Over the years, the material provided to us has become better and better. Where else could anyone get a world class education in communication and leadership skills, these skills so crucial for us as individuals and team community players?

Where else can a Toastmaster learn about how to effectively run a club, corporation or organization, learn about how to entertain as a speaker, how to speak to inform, how to make a PR speech, how to lead a discussion group, how to do specialty speeches such as selling a product etc., how to speak at management levels, how to speak as a professional speaker, how to do a technical presentation, how to do persuasive speaking, how to communicate on TV and radio, how to tell a story, how to interpretive reading, how to communicate inter personal, how to do special occasion speeches such as presenting an award etc. and how to speak humorously?

What a fantastic curriculum!

Toastmasters International provide us with the best material in the world in the field of leadership training and education. And all this for almost no cost. Any "Fortune 500 CEO" could testify to find these Toastmasters "truths" to be effective in their organizations. I have been so impressed with the material I am working with. One just have to be at awe when we think about the possibilities that come out of such great programs!

Leadership opportunities in Toastmasters begin at regular club meetings, with being the Toastmaster or Chairman, to officer positions like President or VP of Education, and continue to BIGGER projects like doing your own High Performance Leadership Project. Check on it.

I have been inspired by all the great leaders in this organization. All great organizations and corporations have great leaders that show great leadership. All the energy in the organizations and the corporations filter down from top to bottom and the organizations/corporations becomes great due to these leaders. The instructions in the programs are simple and easy to understand. All that information is invaluable for Toastmasters who wants to develop themselves and/or their corporations, organizations, clubs, areas, divisions, districts and regions.

Thank you all volunteers that has made this worldwide program possible for millions of people. I am sold on Toastmasters. Once a Toastmaster, always a Toastmaster!

So how can you personally benefit from all these knowledge in front of your feet as a member? By making a decision to take active part in Toastmasters. Set a goal that feels right for you, achieve it and move on to the next one. Maybe you will one day find yourself being a DTM. That's just a title but think about how much you then have developed to the benefit of yourself and society. By inspiring others to go for it, you inspire yourself. Area 54 Kicks Off Division E Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest Series in STYLE!

Area 54 kicked off the Division E contest season on Saturday, September 20, 2008, hosting a rip roaring Humorous Speech Contest and a thought provoking Evaluation Contest.

Four clubs in Area 54 competed: Beckman Coulter Toastmasters, Key West Toastmasters, Middle Keys Toastmasters and West Kendall Toastmasters.

It was great to see Toastmasters from the southernmost Toastmaster Area, and we were in for a treat as Brandee Sweesy from Middle Keys Toastmasters kept the

packed room in peels of laughter with her speech, which was titled ―Looking for Love in the 21st Century‖. She walked away with first place. Phyllis May from Key West Toastmasters came in second with her speech, ―Self Deprecating Humor or Stupidity‖.

Key West Toastmasters came prepared to take home more than one trophy as Phyllis May nailed the evaluation of Tony Rodriguez‘s test speech, ―Don‘t Panic, Stay in the Game‖ by winning first place. Second place went to Joe Mibelli from Beckman Coulter Toastmasters, a ―closed‖ corporate club located near Tamiami Airport.

The contest was chaired by Kathy Dyke, ACS,ALB, Area 54 Governor, and sponsored by the five clubs in the area. Heartfelt thanks are extended to everyone who helped to make the first Area 54 contest a fun and entertaining event.

The winners now move on to the Division E Contest, on October 25, 2008, which will be chaired by Division E Governor, Rick Zoehfeld, DTM, and held in North Miami Beach.

Area 54 is also very pleased to announce that a new club, Homestead Toastmasters, is within days of being chartered. This is great news for Area 54 as this club is positioned between the Keys and West Kendall and will provide new opportunities to members to join a club closer to home. ▄

The Goal we have set for our District expansion is a high and lofty one. I always believe one needs a big goal and game to stretch oneself to greatness. We are attempting to double the size of our District in 3 years which would make us the largest District in the world … again.

This is unheard of ...and that‘s just why we are aiming so high.

The incredible fact is we are doing great so far. Since we started this year District 47 already has 5 new clubs chartered and another 3 clubs have submitted their paperwork to TI. I would like to welcome our newest clubs to the Toastmasters family and encourage all of you to connect with them and give them a warm Toastmasters greeting.

TREASURER’S CORNER

By CC/CL, Jeanine Kinsey, District Treasurer As we work through the contest season, I thought it would be a good idea to give all of our contest chairs some helpful tips relating to budgeting for a contest. When you are planning for a contest, it is important to charge enough to cover your costs. So what are the costs of running a contest? Some helpful questions to gather the answers to are:  Where are we going to have the contest, and is there a cost?  About how many people usually attend this contest?  Are we going to provide food? If so, what is the cost per person?  Is there a cost for printing the programs?  What kind of trophies are we ordering? Please note that these should be ordered from Toastmasters directly, and if you decide to buy them somewhere else, you cannot use the Toastmasters logo or name on them. They should also be appropriate to the level of contest you are running. For example, an Area contest should not hand out the biggest, nicest awards you can find as that would overshadow the trophies at the next level.  Do you need to purchase a contest kit? These run about $10.00 from TI, and you should not make copies of them, but purchase a new one for each contest.  How much will certificates cost?

Will you have a raffle? A good rule of thumb is not to count on the proceeds from a raffle in your budget, but use this to help offset any shortages that might occur.

Now you have a good idea of what it will cost you to put on the contest, and about how many people you hope will attend. Total it up and figure out a reasonable price per person. If you need some You can reach Jeanine help with this, Kinsey, CC/CL at phone there is a form number 954-778-0599 in the Treasurers Corner on the website called Event Accounting Form that will help you put this all in order. The District does allow a small amount of money to help you in the event that you do not collect enough money to cover your expenses. Each Area has $60.00 for the year and each Division has $100.00 for the year. This is not intended as part of your budget, and when it is gone, it is gone. Remember, there are two contests each year, so don't use it all in the fall. If your contest makes money, there are some things that you can do with the money:  Use it to buy a new banner for your Area or Division  Have the Area or Division Governor hold it for the Spring Contest. Please do not hold Spring profits for the Fall.

Turn it in to the District to offset other expenses - please make the check payable to District 47 and send in with an Event Accounting Form.

If you want your club‘s vote to ―count‖, you must be sure your President and VP Education attend the conference and register at the ―CREDENTIALS‖ desk, before it closes. If one or both cannot attend, then ANY member of THAT club can carry both signed ―proxies‖, and register on behalf of the President and/or VP Education, and vote, ―by proxy‖. For the proxy you are to carry to be accepted, you must register at the credentials desk with a copy of that proxy, signed by the President, or VP Education, and, you must be a member in good standing, and the club must be in good standing. All voting is done at the business meeting.

DIVISION I is INCREDIBLE

By DTM Pamela Rolle, Division I Governor Our founder Ralph Smedley stated, ―Ours is the only organization I know that is dedicated to the individual. We work together to bring out the best in each of us, and then apply our kills to help others‖. It is with this in mind that the theme for Division I is ―Embracing the Possibilities.‖ Division I leaders and members were encouraged to begin embracing possibilities that seem to be out of their reach. They were encouraged to make every effort to be better than the best!

This year, emphasis in Division I will be placed on promoting community awareness in an effort to attract new members into the Toastmasters organization. Emphasis will also be placed on providing members with incentives to achieve education goals. Division I has pledged to keep our members informed so they too can begin ―Embracing the Possibilities‖ we have all taken advantage of throughout our Toastmasters experience.

In The Bahamas, October has been designated as Toastmasters month. A proclamation signed by the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is dated September, 10, 2008. Some of the activities planned and thing to look forward to during Toastmasters month are:

1.October 1 - Press Conference to promote Division I and Toastmasters International 2.October 1 - Kick Off - Keith Major 100 Speech Classic - All Clubs are to seek speaking opportunities outside their club, i.e., at churches, schools, other civic organizations in an effort tom complete 100 speeches. The Club with the most speeches at the end of October would win a special

prize. The gift will be presented by DTM Keith Major.

3.October 5 - Church Service and Luncheon.

The service will be held at 10:00am at St. Joseph ‗s Catholic Church. A luncheon will immediately follow at Mosaic Restaurant ?

4.October 23 - Professional Leadership Symposium – Super Clubs Breezes - Cable Beach The target market is Corporate Bahamas. Toastmasters will showcase their talents in arts of communication and leadership 5.October 25 - 26 Membership Drive Opportunities for Clubs at the Bahamas Home & Builders Show Super Clubs Breezes - Cable Beach. All clubs are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.

October 29th - Division I Evaluation & Humorous Speech Contest - Hosted by Cable Beach West Club 6796. There will be a Parade of Club Banners at the beginning of the contest. The Six Dimensions of High Performance Leadership

If I were to tell you that you could devote an hour or two per week, having uproarious fun, over the next year or two developing new skill sets, which have the potential to increase your annual income by $12,000 to $50,000 per year for the rest of your working life; would you want to hear more?

Of course, you would! I believe Toastmasters is one of the most cost effective Leadership Development Programs in the world today; and, it is disguised as a Public Speaking Program.

As a Toastmaster, we learn that there are four types of Leadership. They are statutory leadership, appointed leadership, natural leadership and service leadership. In ―Statutory Leadership‖, leaders are elected by statute to the position they hold, such as President, Senator, Representative, Governor, Mayor and even the Chief Executive Officer of a Corporation being duly elected by the Board of Directors.

Statutory leaders must appoint intermediate leaders to attend to the quarterly, monthly and daily business of the organizational unit and this is defined as ―Appointed Leadership‖. There are those among us who just seem to have a natural ability to cause others to look to them for leadership and direction in daily and other situations and this is defined as ―Natural Leadership‖.

Because of their attentiveness, nurturing, shepherding and supporting the needs of the team, most natural leaders often possess a service attitude, also defined as ―Service Leadership‖. A marriage made in

heaven occurs when the Statutory Leaders and Appointed Leaders are coincidentally Natural Leaders and Service Leaders.

There are Six Dimensions of high performance Service Leadership. High performance service leaders must possess Vision, Values, Character and Integrity to lead their team successfully. Without vision and value, the team will simply go off in all directions to become ineffective. The service leader must have character and integrity; otherwise, nobody will follow.

The first dimension, ―Vision, Values, Character and Integrity‖, requires the service leader to rise above the day-to-day routine and determine a direction necessary to point the team in order to arrive at a valued target. ―Direction‖, the second dimension, requires persuasive skills from the service leader to communicate established measurable goals and actionable objectives to the team. ―Persuasion‖ is the third dimension of effective service leaders.

Effective service leaders also provide the necessary dimensions of ―Support‖ and ―Development‖ to the team. An effective and high performance team must have the necessary support in the form of supplies, equipment and other resources to achieve success. The service leader must provide each team member the opportunity to learn and develop new skill sets necessary to enhance both natural and service leadership capabilities. The sixth and final dimension of service leadership is ―Appreciation‖ for effective performance at all levels of the organization. Statutory and Appointed Leaders who are coincidentally Natural Leaders and Service Leaders will be effective team leaders. Effective leadership is appreciated and rewarded by various forms of remuneration and compensation packages designed to promote the elusive High Performance Leadership Leader.
