Kristina’s Korner G – O – A – L!! In the last few days, I have been watching the Olympic Games in Vancouver. To me, it’s a powerful union of people from around the world, all competing in interesting sports and most of the time, in great sportsmanship. There are amazing success stories and at times, some sad ones too. The contestants are skilled and have practiced, planned and prepared for years. Do you think they set a goal? Watching the different sports, makes me think about what specific skills each of the goal-oriented contenders must possess, in addition to focus, confidence and determination. These are qualities that we use in order to achieve our goals in our non-Olympic lives too. In our Toastmasters life, skills like the above certainly come in handy. Think of our members who are Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM). Do you think they set a goal? Have you accomplished an educational goal this year? We suggest that you complete at least one goal for each Club where you are a member – each year. Each member joined for specific reasons. Are you achieving your goals? Just like each member, each Club, Area and Division has its goals. The District has goals too. We can achieve our goals as a District and become President’s Distinguished with your help. If each member stays focused & confident, partakes in the Club strategy & teamwork, shows courage by speaking outside of the Club, enters a contest or takes on a leadership role and stays motivated, we will have an excellent chance to again become one of the most successful Districts in the world!

Rick’s Room The District Conference… How important is this event? If you ask most anyone who has attended a District conference they will probably tell you it was a turning point in their Toastmasters career. When I first joined Toastmasters, I wanted to overcome some fear of public speaking but more importantly I wanted to gain that confidence that those great speakers had. I wanted to create speeches that would make a difference. As I went along in my Toastmasters club, I didn’t really get the big picture or see what Toastmasters really has to offer until my first District Conference. What an experience. To meet 300 - 400 dedicated Toastmasters in one place for a 3 day weekend was like going to the Disney World for Public speaking. I could have my pick at 12 different speaking and educational workshops. I not only got to meet but listen to a World Champion of Public Speaking as a keynote and 2 of his other workshops. But the most significant experience of the whole weekend was spending time with all those amazing Toastmasters each evening in the hospitality suite. Oh… and the Bahamians. Not only the life of the party but a dynamic life force in our District. The life long friends I made would give me a whole new perspective of my Toastmasters experience. We are planning our biggest Spring District Conference ever on April 16-18 in Ft. Lauderdale. The registration is now open on our District 47 website, http://toastmastersd47.org/. I urge you to come and be a part of the BIG PICTURE.
See you there! Rick Furbush, DTM Lieutenant Governor Education & Training rickfurbush@mac.com

Pamela’s Place The Greatest Investment You’ve invested in your career; you’ve invested in your family; now it’s time to invest in yourself. It’s time to discover, embrace and celebrate your communication and leadership skills. Ask any member and they will tell you, Toastmaster’s International is an enjoyable and rewarding learning experience. Keeping yourself positive, poised and confident is a continuous process. The training goals of Toastmasters include concepts of leadership, goal planning, growth development, training, mentorship and teamwork. Imagine, having your own Mentor to aid your personal leadership development. A good Toastmasters Club should ALWAYS assign a Mentor to new members. A Mentor is someone who is experienced and can provide guidance to new members. Mentors help new members develop confidence and become familiar with the Competent Communicator (CC) and Competent Leader (CL) manuals. They help members to learn about Club meeting roles and opportunities available for advancement. Mentors are not only for new members, but they can help with members who are more experienced and want to learn more about refining and learning new skills. Perhaps you would like to learn how to motivate and inspire people. A Mentor can help. It all boils down to becoming “the best you”. Navigating through life can be a challenge. It doesn't matter if you are just starting out, in your middle years or moving towards retirement you can benefit from a Mentor. Your entire Club benefits from having Mentors so what are you waiting for? Get your fresh start with a Mentor today. After all, who is best to invest in than you? Speak with your Club Officers to get a Mentor and become the best Toastmaster you can be! Pamela D. Rolle, DTM Lieutenant Governor Marketing prolle@toastmastersd47.org

Liz & Pierre Taschereau
Cathy Koyanagi & David Clarke Cathy currently serves the District as our Compassionate Communicator; David recently distinguished himself in his role as the Fall Conference Chair.
Liz is the current Division B Governor while Pierre is serving his second term as the District 47 Public Relations Officer.
Back in May 2001 is when we decided to visit a Toastmasters’ club in Hollywood. Liz had been curious about the organization while living in Texas and I had visited the Early Bird Club in Fort Lauderdale a few times. After the first meeting at Gelfand Good Morning TM Club, we decided to join and it has been an extremely rewarding experience since then. Sharing Toastmasters has been so much fun and we’ve made so many friends! Every meeting we attend provides for great experiences and conversations we get to share. We love to talk about speech ideas and rehearse speeches together. The leadership track has also been lots of fun for us as we both served our home club in many leadership positions including EVP and President. We have learned a great deal about public speaking, leadership, working in teams, community service, furthermore; we have learned about ourselves and nurturing our own relationship through Toastmasters. One of our favorite leisure activities is to attend out of town conferences as we get to travel and see other Toastmasters perform. We always come back home grateful that we are part of such a fantastic social organization. This year we are both becoming DTMs and our Toastmasters journey has taught us many lessons, enabled us to visit many places and most of all, we’ve made lifelong friends along the way!
We have been married for 30 years and have been involved in Toastmasters for 20 of those years. During the 80’s we were living on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands when David was introduced to Toastmasters by his boss at RCA. He joined the island Toastmasters club, “Rikonono”, which means “The Big Wind”. Cathy soon followed. We enjoy being in the same clubs, because it is a shared interest. However, we make it a point to never evaluate each other during a club meeting. Guess our marriage is more important than Toastmasters! The Toastmaster experience has ameliorated our life tremendously. It has provided a pilgrimage for our personal growth and development. It has also given us abundant opportunities. During our travels in Toastmasters we have developed many friendships. Most importantly, Toastmasters has enriched our relationship by providing us with interests and experiences in which we mutually find joy and delight. One wonderful experience was when our children turned 18 and joined our home club. As parents we were jubilant to have a common interest with our adult children and to share quality time with them. It had been a while since they [teenagers] actually wanted us involved in their time. Toastmasters is more than an experience or opportunity: it is a journey, A journey when shared with a spouse or partner is stupendous and meaningful.

The Blue Envelope At the end of this month, Toastmasters International will mail out a very special 8.5x11 baby blue envelope to the President of record for each Club. This envelope contains the voice of your Club and the future of our organization: it contains your Club Proxy. What’s the big deal?
Yes, so glad you asked! You need to ensure that you do one of two things: 1. Plan to attend the Annual Business Meeting to vote your Club’s ballots. The Meeting will be held during the International Convention August 11-14 in Palm Desert, California. OR 2. Turn them over to our District 47 Leadership to exercise your Club’s two votes. The District Governor’s name and address are already printed on the Proxy for your use.
Well in addition to the election of the Board of Club Presidents! Directors who will guide our organization, there are important proposals up for a vote at If you don’t get your special 8.5x11 baby blue envelope in March then contact TI, they can the International Convention. issue ONE duplicate copy. Do I need to do something?
Email Etiquette someone else downloads it by that name onto their system, they might not remember what it is a week from now. Sure, they could rename it, but be courteous and name your file so that its name stands on its own, such as “TM_Division_H_Contest Flyer 022010.pdf”. (And no, there is no Division H in District 47.)
Email has quickly become the foremost delivery system for sending/receiving business and personal messages. Let’s make sure we use this important tool correctly and with some basic courtesy. Here are three guidelines to follow when using your email: 1. Do not broadcast other people’s email addresses without their consent. When you send an email to a number of people who don’t already have each other’s email address, put your own email address in the “To” field and put your list of addresses in the “BCC” (not CC) field. BCC stands for “Blind Carbon Copy” and the BCC recipients do not see each other’s email address when they receive the email. 2. Be very descriptive with file names for attachments. You may have only one “flyer.pdf” file on your system, but when
3. If an attached file is not intended to be edited by the recipient, make it into a PDF file, if possible. There are several free or lowcost PDF generators available. Not everyone has Excel and/or PowerPoint on their system, and even if they do, the fonts on your system might not be the same as the fonts on recipient’s system, resulting in the file looking different than intended. If someone does send you an Excel or PowerPoint file and you don’t have those applications on your system, you can download free “viewers” for those files from Microsoft. Google “PowerPoint viewer” or “Excel viewer” to find them.

Tips for the CL Manual halfway through and make an announcement when that person completes the CL Manual. Let her know you appreciate the special care and preparation that she took with each meeting role.
So, what’s the deal with the CL program? The Competent Leadership (CL) Manual gives you an opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills by serving in Club roles. It will help you gain self-confidence and skills that will help you in many ways: academically, professionally and personally. The CL Manual offers training in time management, organization, planning and critical thinking – all of which can be applied to everyday life.
•
Encourage the President and VPE of your Club to promote the CL Manual at each Club meeting. Emphasize how the Manual functions as a valuable learning tool – training each member on the different roles of the meeting and helping them build beneficial skills for the working world and daily life.
•
Place equal importance on the leadership and communication tracks in your Club by including accreditations for both tracks in all correspondence, agendas and programs for your Club.
•
Use the Competent Leadership Achievement Chart! Post it on the wall during meetings and keep it up-to-date. Draw attention to the successes listed on the chart.
Consider this: If the CL Manual can help a Club run more efficiently and successfully, and it can also help Club members to improve their lives, why wouldn’t your Club leaders pursue it?
