The Sunshiner April 2010

April 2010 is proclaimed Toastmasters International Month WHEREAS, the ability to speak in a clear and effective manner is a powerful and important skill that can help to overcome barriers to effective performance in virtually every endeavor and line of work, and, WHEREAS, by assisting in the development of essential communication skills, Toastmasters International performs a valuable service for its members and those who carry the message of opportunity, initiative, and good fellowship… THEREFORE, I, Senator Paula Dockery of Florida Senate District 15, do hereby recognize April 2010 as “Toastmasters International Month.”

Spread the Word! Thanks to our Toastmaster neighbors to the north in District 84 for making these arrangements to recognize Toastmasters in the month of April! Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell everyone about the exciting opportunities that await them if they will only take that first step and come to a meeting. Let’s celebrate Toastmasters Month here in District 47 by spreading the word about our great organization and by bringing guests to our Club meetings.

Register Now for the Spring Conference - Don’t Be Left Out! Page 1

Kristina’s Korner I’m so excited… And I just can’t hide… I’m about to lose… No, not lose control; jump up and down. There are so many wonderful things going on in District 47 now. It must be SPRING! Well, the Spring Conference is around the corner, so that is always a clue that winter is gone. Here is a short list of the exciting activity in District 47: •

I’ve heard that all Clubs will be paying dues on time, BEFORE March 31. This is indeed a tremendous effort on behalf of all our Clubs – Thank you!

The Spring Conference is almost here and we have some amazing workshops in store for the attending members, superb presenters, and two fierce contests, tons of networking opportunities, an important Council Meeting and much more.

The month of April has been proclaimed “Toastmasters Awareness Month” in the State of Florida. This is extraordinaire news and something we ask every member to share with friends and family. We are very proud of this honor. Florida has now caught up with The Bahamas, where October has been the nations “Toastmasters Month” for some time already.

We will attempt to break the Guinness World Record of a Speech Marathon. We want all Toastmasters to schedule time between June 10th midday to June 13th evening and come to do those manual speeches. I’m sure there are several of you out there who have a hard time fitting your 45 min or 1-hour speech into your Club meeting. THIS IS THE TIME to get it done!! You will be able to schedule as many speeches as you want. We will invite anyone to come and speak, so please put the dates on your calendar and plan to be part of this historic event.

Stay tuned for more information coming your way real soon!

Rick’s Room The Distinguished Toastmaster For brand new people to Toastmasters, a Distinguished Toastmaster is simply another phrase in the Toastmasters lexicon. When they find out a little bit more about it, they realize it’s actually the end to a long journey. Very few of us ever make it to the end of that journey. I remember the first District Conference I attended…Saturday night...the DTM walk. The room was filled with excitement as the existing DTMs lined up to welcome the newest members with handshakes and hugs. I was so impressed! Here was a very special club into which these Toastmasters were being initiated. I knew this group was the best of the best and that is where I set my sights. Little did I realize what growth I would attain along this path. Something amazing actually happens along that route. As you do your speeches, finish your manuals, fulfill the leadership roles, there is a point where you truly begin to feel like a Distinguished Toastmaster. It is no longer just a title or words on a page, it becomes a state of being. You know, when it comes to public speaking, running meetings, clubs or being a leader, there is nothing you cannot accomplish once you have experienced the growth that Toastmasters can bring. You gain that confidence you always wanted to have and have learned to handle s many tasks in a professional manner. I invite all of you to set Distinguished Toastmaster as a goal, put your feet on the steps towards that objective…start along the path and may you reach those heights you only dreamed of.

I’ll be waiting for you at the DTM Walk with open arms! Rick Furbush, DTM Lieutenant Governor Education & Training rickfurbush@mac.com

Pamela’s Place A Refreshing Experience I took a brisk morning walk through the park on the first day of Spring. During my walk, I could not help but notice how clean and beautiful everything appeared to be. The air was fresh, the birds sang and the flowers were in full bloom. This was no doubt a refreshing experience. When lat did you have a refreshing experience? When visiting my home Club for the first time, I remembered how energized and excited I felt. I was so excited about the meeting; I could not wait for the next week to attend another meeting. After the second meeting, I knew Toastmasters would become a part of my life. What I did not know, was what wonderful opportunities being a Toastmaster would bring. Soon after I became a Toastmaster, I attended my first District Conference. I was amazed to meet so many others who loved Toastmasters as much as I did. The education sessions were informative and the contests were simply amazing. I did not want the weekend to end. WOW! What a refreshing experience. From that day forward, I’ve attended every District Conference. If you have not had a refreshing experience lately, what are you waiting for? Let’s spring into action and register now for our District Conference. Encourage ALL members from ALL Clubs to attend. It will help revitalize Clubs under charter strength and give members many ideas on how to build successful Clubs.

It will be an experience you will never forget! Pamela D. Rolle, DTM Lieutenant Governor Marketing prolle@toastmastersd47.org

Welcome to District 47! Congratulations are in order for our own Immediate Past District Governor Antionette Fox who was hand-picked to serve as the very first Region Advisor Marketing (RAM) for Region VIII. The RAM position was created as part of the changes installed when Proposition A was passed last year. The Region Advisor Marketing will be a valuable asset to the growth of Toastmasters International. The volunteers who serve in these roles help district officers gain more clubs and more members by: • • •

IPDG Antionette Fox, DTM, selected as the first RAM for Region VIII

Providing ongoing marketing support and hands-on training; Coaching district leaders and advising them on marketing issues and challenges; Helping district teams develop and implement strategies to create new clubs and strengthen existing clubs.

The RAM is a vital link between districts, World Headquarters and the Board of Directors. We know Toastmaster Fox will make us proud as she moves forward to serve not only our District but all of those on Region VIII. Best Wishes!

Taking the Next Step Toastmasters offers us many opportunities to hone our leadership abilities. Starting in our Club, we take on roles that put us in a position to lead different segments of the meeting. Tasks like General Evaluator, Topics Master and Toastmaster help us build confidence and management skills one step at a time as we check off the tasks in our CL manual. Then we stretch a little more by signing on as a Club Officer. Each of the Club Officer roles provides us with the invaluable leadership experience. The seven Club Officers team up and work to lead the membership to success for themselves and the Club. What comes next? Once you’ve mastered the Club leadership opportunities it’s time to take the next step, and it’s a big one: District Officer.

astic Toastmasters to become Area Governors. The role requires a 1-year commitment to assist 4-7 Clubs achieve the Club Mission. You bet! But isn’t anything that’s worthwhile? Here in District 47 we work hard and play hard! Take a look at these photos from the March District Executive Committee (DEC) Meeting where the District Officers meet to plan the successful future of D47.
