Update from Rick Furbush, District Governor Your Toastmasters Experience Toastmasters ... What‘s in it for YOU? The opportunity to grow in speaking skills ... in leadership ability, to gain confidence tenfold, to make a difference in the world. Those are just a few. But ... how do you do that? Simple! - By assuming more responsibility. Sounds pretty heavy, but it is true. Those who take on more responsibility for their club, their fellow club members, and for those not yet Toastmasters ... those are the ones that really grow. I have heard it said that a chain is as strong as its weakest link. I believe that could be said about Organizations as well. An Organization is only as strong as its weakest member. I have played on many winning teams in my life and they all had one thing in common. Each member felt the whole was greater than the sum of its parts; or that they were part of something bigger. To the degree that they put their heart and soul into it, was the degree that the whole team won. What makes a great Toastmasters club? Not the Herculean efforts of the few, but the teamwork of all. It all comes down to personal responsibility. That is what great leaders and great speakers are made of. The strength of your club and the effectiveness of your experience as a Toastmaster is not the responsibility of a few club officers. It is entirely up to you. As we ring in the holiday season and get ready for a new year, let’s re-dedicate ourselves to not only being the best speaker and leader we can be, but to help our fellow members and our clubs to be the best they can be. As your club grows and flourishes so will your Toastmasters experience. “Find your Voice … and Make a Difference”. Rick Furbush, DTM District 47 Governor rickfurbush@mac.com

Update from Matt Kinsey, Lt. Governor Marketing Hello Fellow Toastmasters, The Toastmasters International program is arguably the most effective selfdevelopment program in the world. The program has provided us with a lifelong opportunity for personal growth. Many of us would readily testify to the life changing benefits of the program because we have personally experienced the magical power of transformation. We are truly grateful to those who have introduced us to the program and by doing so helped unlock our potential. I want you to join me in extending the benefits of membership in Toastmasters International to ever Matt Kinsey, DTM Lt. Governor Marketing greater numbers of people within our district. We should generously share mkinsey@toastmastersd47.org these benefits just as others before us have shared them with us. The District is committed to membership retention, member growth and club retention while seeking opportunities for club extension. We are currently tracking new club leads in every Division. We need your help to sponsor and mentor new clubs. We have clubs that have had membership challenges and are in need of club coaches. Fulfilling the requirements of a club sponsor, mentor or coach not only helps you progress towards your Distinguished Toastmaster award, it also gives you an opportunity to honor the efforts of those who brought Toastmasters to you. If you would like to become a club sponsor, mentor or coach, please contact your Area or Division Governor. Wishing you the most joyous Holiday season,
Matt Kinsey Lt. Gov. Marketing

Division I (Bahamas) - Number One in Toastmasters District 47 Congratulations! For the second consecutive year, Toastmasters International Division I (Bahamas) won top honors out of nine Divisions in District 47, which encompasses South Florida and The Bahamas. The announcement was made before a packed audience of Toastmasters and guests during the recent District 47 Fall Conference held November 6-8 at the Hilton Downtown, Miami Florida. District 47 Governor - 2009-2010, Distinguished Toastmaster Kristina Kihlberg presented the Division Governor of the Year Award to Distinguished Toastmaster Anthony (Tony) Longley, Division I Governor - 2009-2010. DTM Longley had a phenomenal year as Division Governor earning him the Division Governor of the Quarter Award for each of the four quarters during the administrative year July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Longley led a vibrant team of Assistant Division Governors, Area Governors and Committee Chairs under the theme, “Communicate… Lead… Succeed!” About his achievements Longley said, “It was not easy; it was a long and tedious year. We faced many challenges and overcame many obstacles. Also, there was heavy competition from 2 or 3 Divisions in South Florida. However, I knew that to be successful, I had to remain focused on the course I charted at the beginning of the year. It required a “hands on” approach and I had to ensure that my Area Governors and other players understood their roles and how each functionary factored into the overall agenda. We persevered and in the end, together we made it happen.” Under Longley’s leadership, Division I chartered six new Toastmasters Clubs and scores of members achieved educational and leadership designations during the fiscal year. In addition to the Division Governor of the Year Award, other awards earned by Division I at the Conference included: Area Governor of the Year – DTM Demekas Foster; #2 Club in District 47, Healing Communicators Club 7178, President – TM Wence Martin; #3 Club in District 47, 21st Century Communicators Club 965175, President – TM Deidre Goodman. Division I also earned the highest distinction bestowed by Toastmasters International, President’s Distinguished Division. DTM Deanna Morrison won the District 47 Speech Evaluation Contest. Additionally, all seven Area Governors of Division I attained the levels of Distinguished, or President’s Distinguished Area. Longley said, “The members are at the top of the Toastmasters organizational chart and as District Officers, our main job is to serve our members. Therefore, I would be remiss if I were not to extend my profound gratitude and congratulations to the members of the 45 clubs in Division I for their hard work and dedication, as well as to my Division Executive Council and my advisors. I share this honor with them because, together we made it happen.” Page 7 Page 7

Club of the Year 2009/2010
St. Petersburg Toastmasters Club 2284, Division G Toastmasters Club 2284 recently had the high honor of receiving an outstanding award at this year’s 2010 Fall conference in Miami. Over the past year the club worked diligently to have all members do manual speeches and work on their leadership skills. The Club held three speech-athons at our Vice President of Education Jeff Thomas’ Club house; and one at our Area Governor York Somerville’s house. Our Club also sent a team down to the Guinness World Record speech-athon where District 47 Toastmasters broke the record for the longest speech-a-thon. The Club was awarded 57 awards during 2009/2010. Why all the hard work and long hours? This year the District 47 Governor Rick Furbush laid down the gauntlet to award the best club of District 47. With over 261 clubs competing, Club 2284 set the bar very high and worked tirelessly making sure that every speech received credit in a manual and scheduled four and five speeches each meeting. What happens when you set your goals high? You create an excitement and receive the benefits of hard work. Not only did Club 2284 win the best club in District 47, they received more awards than any other club in the world. Club 2284 is the best club in the world! The club did not set out to be the best in the world, but through hard work and determination the outcome was to see our club delegates walk on stage at the 2010 Fall Conference in Miami to receive the plaque and lapel pins for all the members. The 14th of December will be a special night for club 2284; District 47 Governor Rick Furbush will make a special presentation at Club 2284 to present all the members with their Club of the Year 2009-2010 lapel pins. The Club will also receive a ribbon for their banner. Furbush will speak of the hard work that the club has done and the precedent the club set for winning the “Best Club in District 47”. Asked, “What’s next for Club 2284?” York Somerville commented, “To win best Club in District 47 again, what else!” Congratulations to all the members of Club 2284 for the hard work. The best part is that all of the members achieved awards, saw the benefits of working hard and became better speakers, listeners and leaders.

Congratulations to the Top 3 Clubs in District 47 for 2009 2009--2010 1st Place - Club 2284 St. Petersburg Toastmasters, Division G From Club 2284’s President: Our club 2284 accomplished something that has not done since 1957 when the club was chartered, it became the #1 Club of the year for 2009-2010 in the entire District. The announcement from our District Governor Rick Furbush was given at the District 47 awards conference in Miami. I was so pleased to be able to walk up on the big stage at the conference to accept this outstanding award. I brought up all the club members that attended this awards ceremony. Our club earned 57 awards and did 71 educational speeches. We beat out India & China. I was so proud to be part of this goal. We did it as a TEAM. Thank you for all who made it possible. It’s not about being #1 in the District & World and getting all these awards. It’s all about learning and bettering yourself and having fun doing it. In the words of our New District Governor, “If it’s not fun, it’s not Toastmasters.” Congratulations! St. Petersburg Club

REFORMATION UPDATE At the District Council meeting held on November 6th, 2010 at the Miami Hilton Downtown, the Council unanimously voted to reform the District as presented by the Reformation Committee. The next step is for the Committee to present a proposal to Toastmasters International with why and how we wish to reform and then the International Board will approve at their meeting in February, 2011. The Council voted to accept the reformation with an East/West divide with current Divisions A, F, C, G & H creating the new West District and Divisions E, B, D & I making up the East. It was also voted unanimously that the number 47 will stay with the East side, while we have a verbal agreement from WHQ to get #48 for the new West District. The next step is to receive the approval from the Board and then move forward and elect 5 District Officers at the Spring Conference in April in Tampa. We will elect one District Governor, two Lt. Governors Education & Training (one for East and one for West) and two Lt. Governors Marketing (one for East and one for West). As a team of 5, they will lead our joint District 47 for the term 2011-2012. At the Spring Conference in 2012, we will vote for two sets of separate District Officers and we will be officially reformed on July 1, 2012.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE It’s that time of the year again! Anyone interested in serving the District as a Division Governor, Lieutenant Governor Marketing (LGM), Lieutenant Governor Education and Training (LGET) or District Governor – LISTEN UP! On March 12, 2011, the Nominating Committee will interview everyone interested in running for office. Stay tuned soon (early December) for further information about application forms and guidelines for the elected District positions. You can nominate yourself or someone you believe will be a good servant leader for our members. The deadline to submit application forms is February 25th. Let’s make sure that we get the best available team out there to serve our District. Put your thinking cap on – WHO would you nominate to serve as your Division Governor or as one of our top District Officers? Every year the Realignment Committee reviews the borders of all Areas and Divisions. Where there is a need to shift, create new, modify any Area/Divisions, it will be presented and voted on at the Council meeting at the Spring Conference. There will most likely be one or two new Divisions, so if you are interested in running for Division Governor, stay tuned for further information. For questions on any of the above, contact Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) Kristina Kihlberg at kkihlberg@toastmastersd47.org Page 10 Page 10

Goodbye to a Toastmaster Submitted by Susan Carter “Give
me a topic “he would say with a gleam in his eye. Speeches galore from him we would get. It did-
n’t matter what the topic, Ralph always had a speech for it. The master of impromptu speaking, he shared with us his love of public speaking. But on November 4, 2010, the master left us and we have been at a loss since. It is with great sadness that I share the loss of Ralph Wells. A founding member of the SEHRO Sundowners based at USAA, he had been a part of the Toastmasters’ community over 25 years. His love of public speaking was evident any time he took to a stage. A teacher and mentor to many, he showed by example how to be a Toastmaster. The mission of Toastmasters International is to help men and women learn the art of speaking, listening, and thinking-vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding and contribute to the betterment of mankind. (Competent Communication ) Ralph was a man that lived that mission. Always available to club members, he taught many how to use their own experiences to make wonderful speeches. A vibrant leader, the club and community looked at him as an example of what we should be. He was available to listen at any time, offer encouragement, and was a mentor to so many that we have lost count. When remembering Ralph, many express his positive nature-his love of people-that drew them to him. Whether a master of ceremony for an event or coming up with an impromptu speech, Ralph loved public speaking. Table topics were an adventure that took him along a path that resulted in some of the funniest and memorable meetings for the Sundowners. Ralph competed at area, division and district levels throughout the years, collecting a mass of trophies that threaten to hide him at his desk at work. Ralph leaves behind a legacy for the members of his clubs to live up to. By example, he was the best of us and we will strive to keep that legacy alive. He is survived by his wife Janet and his family. Page 16
TOASTMASTERS’ STORIES TOASTMASTERS CLUB : start-up at Visakhapatnam (India) A few of us are very much interested and longing to start afresh a chapter of the Toastmasters in Visakhapatnam (India) for the past many months… However, we could not make it operate until the intervention of one of your members, Dr. Bhaskar Karumanchi, who flew all the way to us. She, in fact, started communicating from USA with our Dist. Governor #82 Mr. Nagaraja Rao initially and later with the club members from Hyderabad since July 2010. It is all now due to the unflinching, steadfast and dedicated efforts of Dr. Bhaskar Karumanchi (Member of Club 6003, Area 24, Division ‘B’ of your District, motivating us) who made it possible to lead and guide us for the first Toastmasters Club here. Despite her present downhearted & distressing situation, the untimely and sad demise of her mother here; she offered all her help, cooperation and assistance that made all of us stick together and work for the formation of the Toastmasters Club. Indeed, we are all greatly indebted to her. Enclosed please find a few photographs wherein you will find the 1st meeting members (started with) 5 in number grew to 12 within a week and the credit undoubtedly goes to Dr. Bhaskar Karumanchi. We are certain to have more members joining us for a fullfledged club very soon.

TOASTMASTERS’ STORIES Partying With a Purpose By Barbara Strasdas, ACB, CL Reaching the ripe age of 50 calls for celebrating in high style, but having fun with a purpose is more uplifting than helium gas. While planning the Gold Coast Club 2727 (Palm Beach Gardens) 50th Anniversary festivities a decision was made to donate all net proceeds to the local Gavel Clubs. Toastmasters International created Gavel Clubs for potential members who do not have the fiscal means to support a normal club membership. Gavel Clubs are usually found in a prison setting. Rich Otten, Gold Coast member and Area 40 Governor received a letter from one of the prisoners at the Okeechobee Prison that he could not ignore. Every Monday he drives from Hobe Sound to the prison for several reasons. Statistics show that 50 to 70% return to prison in three years, but those prisoners who participate in a Toastmaster Gavel Club have only a 5 to 10 % return to prison. The investment of Rich's time can result in the State's savings of $20,000 to $ 26,000 per prisoner per year. He says that the prisoners gain the confidence to interview better, learn how to take feedback with a better attitude, and with their new skills can lead productive lives when they leave prison. Because of his successful mentorship he was asked to implement a Gavel Club at the Belle Glade and Pahokee prisons. At this current date, he has 116 prisoners enrolled in the prison Gavel Clubs. Another Gold Coast member, Cathy Koyanagi, threw her whole-hearted efforts to start a Gavel Club for the Blind when she learned she would lose her sight as a result of radiation to cure her cancer. Cathy's wit has always uplifted others at the Toastmasters clubs and District events. Her struggle led her to find support at the Lighthouse for the Blind. She knew that she needed to bring her Toastmasters confidence to another audience. As Toastmasters we learn to mentor and "pay it forward". With such wonderful nurturers as Rich Otten and Cathy Koyanagi, how easy it is! It’s easy to celebrate the longevity of a club, knowing that our fun resulted in assisting Gavel Clubs to build their membership and better mankind. The Gold Coast anniversary event raised close to $900 to buy supplies, manuals and pins to support these Gavel Clubs. Many thanks to all of those who contributed to make the event a success for all.
