Update from Rick Furbush, District Governor

A View From The Top As we are coming to the end of another Toastmaster’s year (July 1st – June 30th), I find myself reflecting back on all that has happened. It has been a wonderful year for Toastmasters and especially District 47. Our District has grown to such an extent that we are in the process of splitting for a second time within 3 years. The highlights of the year were our 2 District Conferences. Our Spring Conference broke all the records with 450 attendees and 176 first timers. What a fabulous event, with not only 12 great workshops, and two wonderful contests, but we had our reigning world champion as our Keynote and workshop presenter. As of this writing we have started 22 new clubs and have many more in the works. We are on our way to finishing with a bang, but we need your help. We want all our clubs to be Distinguished. That is where you come in. These are your clubs and we need your help to boom them. Finish off one of your manuals. Reach out and bring in new members, or recover some lost club members. In building up your club to Distinguished status it will make your Toastmasters experience much better. I am so grateful for the many friends I’ve made and the fantastic Team of District Officers I’ve had the chance to work with. This has been a wonderful learning experience for me and as I leave I would like to share some parting thoughts: Don’t take life so seriously: Don’t take life so seriously, you have a better chance of winning if you don’t. Remember, if it isn’t fun … it isn’t Toastmasters.  Create and follow your own dreams and goals: “With a Dream and a Team … anything is possible”.  Look for and validate the rightness in others and that is what will develop.  Find your Voice and … Make a Difference.  

It has been my pleasure to serve as your District Governor. Thank you. Rick Furbush, DTM District 47 Governor

Update from Pamela Rolle, Lt. Governor Education & Training

Happily Ever After All fairy tales have two things in common. They begin with ‘Once upon a time’ and they end with …‘Happily Ever After.’ As we listen to those familiar stories, many of us wanted to be like the beautiful Princess or the handsome Prince. Once upon a time, Club Officers and members pledged to follow the Toastmasters Promise and attend Club meetings regularly, prepare speech and leadership projects and fulfill meeting assignments. Clubs followed the Toastmasters Promise, became Distinguished and everyone lived happily ever after. Our Toastmasters experience is not a fairly tale. It’s reality! In our organization, we have the opportunity to develop our skills while following the Toastmasters Promise. When we do this, membership and education goals will increase. To help your Club live happily ever after, make sure Club Officers post your goals to the Toastmasters International website. Let’s make them count. With the few weeks left in this Toastmasters year, we can all live happily ever after, if you play your part. We are counting on you! While you prepare for your ‘Happily Ever After’, our newly elected Officers will experience their ‘Once Upon a Time’ on July 1, 2011. To help prepare for a successful year, the District leadership team designed special training sessions known as Toastmasters Leadership Institute or TLI. All Club Officers are encouraged to attend and benefit in fulfilling the duties each role requires. Take advantage of the following training opportunities in June and July: West Coast: June 18 - St. Petersburg - Suncoast Hospice, Gathering Place Conference Center, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33760 July 16 - Tampa - Progressive Insurance Bldg C, 4030 Crescent Park Dr., Riverview FL 33578 July 16 – Naples - South County Regional Library, 21100 Three Oaks Parkway, Estero, FL 33928 East Coast June 18 – Boca Raton - Office Depot Headquarters – 6600 North Military Trail, Boca Raton, FL 33496 July 9 – Ft Lauderdale - BankAtlantic Training Center - 2100 West Cypress Creek Road, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33309 July 16 – Miami - Venue TBA Nassau, Bahamas June 18 – S.C. McPherson Junior High School, Blue Hill Road Go to www.toastmastersd47.org and register for TLI today! See you at the TLI and let’s live happy ever after! Regards, Pamela. D. Rolle

Stay Strong It’s been another amazing year. District 47 continues to open new clubs at a rapid pace. We have created more than 20 clubs this year with more on the way. This would not have happened without the work of all of our Area and Division Governors. We’ve also worked with 2 fantastic new club chairs this year, the late Joseph Miller, DTM and Ron Rice, who serves double duty as our District Sergeant at Arms as well. The end of the year is coming up quickly. Is your club Distinguished or better? If not, there is still time to achieve Distinguished Status. Achieving Distinguished status is an outward recognition of your club’s commitment to the mission of Toastmaster’s International. It means your members are meeting their goals. One of the often misunderstood items with the Distinguished Club Programs is the membership requirement. A club must be at charter strength OR show a net growth of 5 members over July 1 to qualify for the program. Where does your club stand? How many members are paid? Does your club qualify for the DCP? We have many clubs in the District who have between 17 and 19 members who just need 1, 2 or 3 more members to become qualified. According to Toastmasters’ Membership Growth Manual (http://www.toastmasters.org/1159_flier), the health of your club depends on 6 factors: 1. Effective club meetings that make Toastmasters worthwhile for new and old members alike 2. Continuous promotion of Toastmasters throughout your community or organization 3. Use of proven “sales” techniques to develop guests from prospects and members from guests 4. Retention of current members 5. Competition within the club, area, division, and district 6. Recognition of those Toastmasters who go out of their way to sponsor new members and make other contributions to the club’s overall strength Caption describing picture orThere is still graphic.of the year.

time to run a short membership drive between now and the end If everyone in your club commits to bringing one potential member, your club could easily double in size in the next 30 days. Your entire District team is on the job until the end of the year. Reach out to your Area Governor, Division Governor, me, Pamela or Rick if you need assistance. We are here to help you succeed and reach your goals. Matt Kinsey, DTM Lt. Governor Marketing

Check Your Records! As you are aware, Toastmasters International launched a significant website project earlier this year. We received the following email from headquarters in regards to the status. “Many new upgrades to the Toastmasters website have been launched and we continue to roll out new aspects of the project that will ultimately provide an improved online experience for everyone. Though, as with any major system upgrade, we have experienced a few technical glitches, overall we are showing great success. Ultimately everything should flow very well, to assure that the members’ experience is better than ever. We will be sure to keep the districts informed as any changes come out, but we still hope to hear of any errors that you are receiving, so that we can work to fix anything we have not seen previously. Please rest assured we are working hard on any issues that arise and we thank you all for your patience during this transition process. Each day we are continuing to work as quickly and efficiently as we can to ensure all the processing is up to date, the phones are answered and emails are returned.” We recommend that you check your membership list against TI’s records. We have heard of a few incidents where members were paid by the clubs but were not recorded properly by Toastmasters. To check this, look at your DCP report online and compare this to your club records. You can also log in to your account at Toastmasters, go to Club Central, and verify that all members who paid are properly recorded. If you have any discrepancies, please send an email to membership@toastmasters.org to make them aware of the situation so they can resolve it. Thanks, Matt Kinsey Toastmasters District 47 Lt. Gov. Spring Conference 2011 – Tampa, FL If you’ve been a member of District 47 Toastmasters for more than a few weeks, you no doubt have heard our jovial District Governor Rick Furbush declare... “If it’s not fun, it’s not Toastmasters.” And how true! Our spring conference was a weekend of nonstop fun and action. Thanks to our hardworking team of Division and Area Governors, led by the so capable Conference Chair team of Jane Strong and Glennette Reckley. With over 450 attendees registered, including a record breaking 200 first timers, we raised the roof at the Tampa Marriott airport hotel at our Spring 2011 Conference. From the opening ceremonies on Friday night, beginning with the color guard presented by MacDill’s Finest, in pomp and splendor, the stirring rendition of the Bahamas and US National anthems, to the Table Topics speech competition we were off to a flying start. All contestants were worthy of the title, but it was John Boyd of Division G, who wowed the judges and captured the title of Table Topics Champion. What could top an outstanding table topics contest? Nothing, unless, you’re treated to a viewing of the 2010 World Championship Public Speaking winning speech, followed by, dressed in aviator costume and all, our special guest and keynote speaker, the 2010 World Champion - David Henderson. The party took off when the “hospitality suite” and the “casino” opened. I know Toastmasters are competitive, regarding speeches, but who knew they were even more competitive when it comes to the blackjack tables until the midnight hour struck. Saturday morning our First timers were treated to their special invited session where they were enthusiastically welcomed and catered to by our exuberant team who kept them entertained and connected, making new friends and networking. The morning was followed by a series of outstanding workshops, open to all attendees. The feedback is still coming in regarding the knowledge gained, friendships formed, and laughter and intensity as the raffle team made sure that all present had an opportunity to participate in the raffle gifts and a record breaking 50/50 prize. The Communication and Leadership award was presented to former Tampa Mayor, Pam Iorio, who was our honored guest at lunch on Saturday. It was evident to all the reason why she is so well loved as she delivered a motivating and entertaining speech, and posed for numerous photos with all the members who wanted to meet and greet her. Lunch was followed by the business meeting where we completed the voting for our new District Officers, who will take office on July 1, 2011 and are being affectionately referred to as “The Fab Five.” The Fab Five team comprises : District Governor- Pamela Rolle LGET East – Matt Kinsey LGET- West- Kathy Furbush LGM-East- Hieu Huynh LGM-West – Ron Rice Hieu, Ron, Pamela, Kathy, Matt Please be sure to congratulate them and support them as they work diligently to make our District a huge success. The next issue of The Sunshiner will formally introduce the 2011-2011 District Leadership Team. 6

Spring Conference 2011

(Continued from page 6)

And then the highlight of the conference, what we all wanted to see, that Saturday night, …the International speech contest. We are so fortunate to have such talent and I’m sure the judges were hard tasked to determine the winner. Shawn Purvis from Division C, took the top honors and will represent us at the International Conference in Las Vegas August 18-20, 2011. Shawn, we’re pulling for you and cheering you all the way to Las Vegas and the World Championship stage! What makes a party great? Good people, good food and great music. Area 40 Governor and DJ, Rich Otten and his wife Jan from DanceNSound ensured that feet moved, bodies were shaking and smiles galore were the order of the evening as the contests concluded and the dance hall opened. Rich, thank you so much for providing our excellent dinner and dance music. Another presentation by David Henderson followed the contest, and we were totally impressed with his “awesomeness.” David endeared himself to us that weekend, and many attendees commented that he is so humble, so approachable and so friendly, that they felt like they had known him a long time and he was their friend. David went above and beyond the call of duty as our keynote speaker and could be seen throughout the weekend chatting with attendees, in conversation with small groups, impromptu coaching and teaching, and just exemplifying the spirit of Toastmasters, the spirit of caring and giving back. David, you’re definitely a winner in our book. We thank you for touching our lives! Sunday morning kicked off with our District Executive Council meeting where the District Leaders came together to discuss the triumphs and lessons learned so that we could recognize excellence and make plans to improve in areas where we were challenged. The weekend culminated with David Henderson’s final presentation with practical tips for public speaking success including live coaching from the stage. It’s been said that if you attend a conference, it will change your life. This is not only a cliché, but an obvious truth. The networking, the food, the contests, the food, the friends formed (Did I mention the food?) are truly what brings us all together as we work and play to bring out not only the best in ourselves, but the best in others. Enjoy the photos on the following page and visit our website now to see the weekend in pictures www.toastmastersd47.org. Make your plans now to attend our next conference in the fall at the West Palm Beach Crowne Plaza, November 4-6, 2011, for another weekend of the true spirit of Toastmasters. You’ll kick yourself if you miss it! We look forward to welcoming you there! Note: There is a danger in naming individuals who helped to make our conference such a huge success, it’s almost a guarantee that you will miss someone’s name unintentionally. Please know that if you helped in any way to make this conference such a success, that we appreciate you, we salute you and most sincerely thank you for all you do for Toastmasters. With Much Appreciation Myrna S. Brooks Public Relations Officer 2010-2011

Proxies for the Annual Business Meeting Toastmasters International sent the official proxy notification for the Toastmasters International Annual Business Meeting to all club presidents and club secretaries via e-mail on May 11, 2011. Using the Toastmasters website, clubs can determine electronically who will carry their votes: The club can send a delegate to the meeting. The club may assign the proxy to the 2011 -2012 District Governor. They may also assign another active Toastmaster member. If a club assigns the District Governor as its delegate, the District Governor in office at the time of the International Convention will be able to cast the club’s votes at the Annual Business Meeting. From the website, District Governors will be able to see not only which clubs have assigned their proxies to them, but they can also find out which clubs have or have not assigned their proxies. For those clubs who have not submitted their proxies, District Governors will be provided with the club president's name and contact information to allow the District Governor to follow up. At the Convention, instead of scanning multiple proxy cards, delegates will scan their Convention badges at the credentials desk and a printout will be generated showing how may ballots are to be issued. Ballots will be distributed and utilized for casting votes as in the past. For Frequently Asked Questions: www.toastmasters.org/proxyquestions

Table Topic Interview By Joshua Haines ALB/ACS, Area 71 Governor To say that the job market is competitive is an understatement. With the recent turn in the economy job interviews are more like marathon races with three and four stage processes with testing in between. So like any other athlete preparing for competition I began practicing. So often we sit in our Toastmasters meetings going through the motions and not reflecting on the impact it has in our everyday lives. After joining Toastmasters three years ago I have watched my career and leadership roles increase year after year. It wasn't until I was approached by a recruiter to interview for what would be my dream job that I really saw the value in my membership. The first phone interview was scheduled and like any speech I began preparing my outline and getting all my talking points in order. I then visited more meetings to practice Table Topics. I have found that through all my many interviews, and there were many, that each interview question was merely a Table Topics question. I needed a beginning, middle, and conclusion that answered the question quickly and accurately. With each phase in the interview process I relied more and more on my experience in Toastmasters to pass on to the next stage. As the final stages approached I began using my manual speeches to prepare for the executives I would be meeting. Using Advanced Manual Storytelling I wrote a speech on the rich history of the company and the founder. The (Sales) Manual allowed me to practice selling the product in the "Cold Call" speech. I was able to know more about the company and it's products then my competition. In the end I won the Marathon and impressed the management. They would let me know after I accepted the position that I was the most prepared and well spoken candidate they had interviewed in the past year the job had been opened. I thanked them and my fellow Toastmasters for all the evaluations. The Toastmaster experience has taught me many things along the way. While I entered the organization with the hope of improving my speaking skills I found that I have become a better leader and listener along the way. While my education and work experiences were helpful, it was absolutely my time spent preparing and practicing in Toastmasters that helped me achieve the job I have today. I challenge everyone to push yourself and to say YES when asked. I have always found you will get out of the program what you are willing to put into the program. For me I have gotten more than I could have ever imagined. Thank you fellow Toastmasters.
