The Gift This month many people around the world will celebrate a season of glad tidings, giving and sharing. For many, it’s a time of giving gifts and sharing. For others, it’s a time to spend with families or celebrate with friends. Whatever this time of year means to you, there are gifts we all have within us. These gifts were not given to us to keep to ourselves; they were given so that we can share them with someone else. Here are five gifts that won’t require online or over the counter purchase: We can give: The Gift of Listening - It means not interrupting people when they speak. It means not planning your response to a comment or question until you have heard it in its entirety. Giving the gift of listening means simply paying full attention to the speaker and respecting the other person’s thoughts and opinions.
Pamela D. Rolle, DTM
The Gift of Affection - It means being generous with appropriate gestures of affection or just a warm handshake. An occasional pat on the back for a job well done is also a wonderful way to show someone you care. The Gift of Laughter - Share funny stories and jokes. By doing this, your gift will say, ‘I love to laugh’ or ‘I enjoy making others happy’. The gift of laughter is powerful and one of my personal favorites. I know a certain District leader who loves to share this gift. The Gift of a Written Note - Express in a brief, handwritten note your appreciation for something someone has done for you. As District 47 Toastmasters, take advantage of every opportunity to share this gift with each other. It will make a difference! The Gift of a Compliment - Sincerely saying, “That's a nice outfit you're wearing” or “I appreciate you,” can bring a smile. Take time to let your teams know how much you appreciate them. Tell them how honored you are to have them work with you. We have a wonderful opportunity as Toastmasters to share these gifts with our family, friends. We are all in a position of service. We serve as mentors, guidance counselors, teachers, trainers, disciplinarians and motivators. Opportunities are endless for us to share the gift of listening, the gift of affection, the gift of laughter, the gift of a written note and the gift of a compliment. As we celebrate our special ethnic, religious and cultural holidays this month, let’s take time to reflect on the spirit of giving. I encourage you to give unselfishly. Have a wonderful holiday season, and best wishes for a safe, healthy, peaceful, happy, and productive New Year! Happy Holidays! Kindest regards Pamela D. Rolle, DTM District 47 Governor 3

Will your Free Toast Host website be DERAILED Feb. 17?
“Make the Switch NOW to FTH2!” By: Phyllis May, DTM
If your club uses a ‘FreeToastHost’ website, are you aware that it will be ‘gone’ on February 17? What to do? Don’t wait until the last minute to change over to the new platform. Nothing from your FTH website is transferred to the new platform so if you have documents or photos on there you’ll need to retrieve them before you no longer have access to the old site. EVERYTHING needs to be re-entered. Like most changes, the new platform is different and takes getting used to as there is nothing about it that is like the one you’ve been using. While some webmasters have made the change quickly and easily, most have not. But if this almost 70-year-old female can do it, so can you! The first step is to go to http://support.toastmastersclubs.org/ , look at the tabs along the top and select “Request a FreeToastHost2 website”. After completing the requested information, your new web address will be sent to you. You will become very ‘friendly’ with that support website and they are great at answering questions. You will need to set up your own profile there for discussions/questions. Yes…the FTH2 websites are templates and your site will look very much like every other one. You do have your choice of 3 color combinations. For our club members, we use it mostly for the duty roster and invoices. However, the main purpose is to have a web presence so that visitors can find us. Having a creative, original website isn’t that important to us. We’ve been satisfied with what our free FTH website has given us since 2004...and now it’s even better! Once you get the information to set up administrative information on your site, just take it one step at a time. All of your member information will need to be entered. A big problem for me was the time. Be sure to select this: EST5/EDT After you begin creating agendas, it will automatically add them to the calendar. There is no Duty Roster function. Modifying an agenda to serve the purpose of a duty roster was a challenge but it’s working now and our members easily use it. (There is also no Invoice feature). Many of our members have written a bio and added a photo to the, ‘Meet our Members’ section. With some time, you will get used to it and appreciate the new features. I recently gave a presentation at the District 47 conference and have sent to many people who attended a step-by-step handout that I would be glad to share. If you’re not in the LinkedIn Toastmasters discussion group, you’re missing a lot of valuable discussions. It was there that I first learned that we were losing our website and it was there that I’ve gotten help and made friends with Toastmasters around the world. In fact, one man in China is having my info translated into Chinese and then will distribute it to the clubs! One of the LinkedIn people sent me a chart listing the features of the old FTH compared with the new one. I’ll be glad to send that as well. Using the FTH2 support website, LinkedIn discussion and possibly the information that I’ll gladly share, you should have the tools to easily get your website back on track with minimal frustration. Yes…there are other sites that can be used but the site with Toastmasters International partnership is FTH2. Whether you’re the club webmaster, President, VP-PR or an interested member, make sure your club isn’t caught off guard. Change is difficult and with it comes resistance but, like childbirth, once you have the ‘baby’, you quickly forget the challenges that led up to the pride you have showing off the ‘new arrival’. Key West Toastmasters site is now back on track at www.keywesttoastmasters.org The new site is a ‘work in progress’ but it’s functioning and will continually improve. Members have all logged in and are gradually adding their profiles. If you have questions as you work through this or would like the information sent to you, please email me at pmaykeys@bellsouth.net

Toastmasters Club 1600 Ushers in the Holidays on a High Note – A 30 Year Tradition! By: Anthony (Tony) Longley, DTM – District 47 PRO
I
n a long standing tradition started by 1981 President Bernard F. Hanna, DTM, First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters Club 1600 held its annual ‘Night of Christmas Music’ on December 15. The event marked the official close of the club’s programs for the calendar year 2011. Every year around this time, Toastmasters Clubs in The Bahamas take a break in observance of the Christmas holidays. In our culture, Christmas is celebrated in the islands on a similar scale to Thanksgiving in America. Clubs will resume their meetings in early January 2012. Club 1600 holds the title of ‘Club of the Year, 2010-2011’ in District 47. More than 50 Toastmasters and guests turned out for the fun-filled event. The special guest of the President for the District Governor Pamela D. Rolle, DTM gave evening was Pamela D. Rolle, DTM - District 47 Governor who remarks and extended holiday greetings to gave encouraging remarks and extended holiday greetings members & guests. to members and guests. Pamela, who became another year "younger", as she celebrated her recent birthday on December 14th, got a surprise treat when the members and guests showed their love and appreciation by singing the Happy Birthday chorus, complete with 3 trumpeters and a conductor. Everyone then enjoyed a beautiful and tasty birthday cake provided by the club’s Executive Committee. The District Governor who is a 'nightingale' in her own right, also formed a trio along with Keith Major, DTM (Past President) and Ms Ryan Albury (guest) for a harmonious rendition of the Christmas classic, 'Silent Night' which earned them a thunderous applause. To close out the Charles Newbold III, President of First evening, members Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters Club 1600 extends Happy Birthday greetings & a slice of and guests responded cake to District Governor Pamela Rolle. to an appeal by Club 1600 President Charles Newbold III by generously donating funds to be used for the purchase of educational supplies and other daily essentials for children housed at 'All Saints Camp', a care facility for adults and children afflicted with HIV/AIDS. "We are fortunate to be persons who are trained as communicators and leaders through Toastmasters. So, I can think of no better way to demonstrate the ideals of Toastmasters as envisioned by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley who founded this organization as 'Silent Night' by TRIO-District Governor, a means of service to his community, than for us to show our Pamela Rolle, DTM; Keith Major, DTM & gratitude by sharing our blessings of time, talents and treasures Guest - Ryan Albury. with those who are less fortunate than ourselves", said TM Charles Newbold III, Club President in his holiday message. Then, to the tune of the 3 trumpeters, the members and guests moved around the room shaking hands or hugging one another as they expressed Christmas and holiday greetings. On this ‘high note’… the meeting was adjourned! 8

Toastmasters Communicating Through Community Service By: Terrance Conover
On November 17th, Toastmasters from four local Fort Lauderdale Area Clubs, Toast of Las Olas, Plantation Toastmasters, Inspired Toastmasters, and Greater Ft. Lauderdale Toastmasters teamed up to help kids in need! It started with a speech one evening by Toastmaster Gaia Calcaterra at Toast of Las Olas. Her speech about how she suddenly and tragically lost a loved one touched several of the Toastmasters. Her loss had prompted her to help Tomorrow’s Rainbow (http://www.tomorrowsrainbow.org), a local non-profit organization providing therapeutic support to children who have lost parents or loved ones. They use miniature horses during therapy, the financial goal being to raise Left to Right: Abby Mosher (Executive Director of Tomorrow’s Rainbow); Tara Crawford (President of Toast $25,000 to hire an “on-the-ranch” therapist. The funds of Las Olas); Gaia Calcaterra (Toast of Las Olas Member); raised are being matched Nicole Lewis (VP of Education, Toast of Las Olas); David by a NY organization. Safeer (Friend of Toastmasters); L. Thomas Chancy Her speech encouraged (Softscapes President, Environmentalist) several of us Toastmasters to help, and thus started a whirlwind effort to put together a “Magical Presentation” on Children’s Grief Awareness Day just five weeks away. Meeting weekly and communicating daily, we were able to secure donations from Publix, 7th Street Winery, Grateful Palette, Mezzaluna, Market 17, Cheesecake Factory, Artists - Toastmasters Nia Nakis and Romeo Britto, Architexture and Jorg Hrusch. With the help of L. Thomas Chancey of Softscapes - (http://softscapes.com/), who donated his Tropical Garden for the event, 100 members of the local community attended. Toastmasters Gaia Calcaterra and David Safeer presented their stories of triumph over loss and struggle. Toastmaster Nicole Lewis was the MC for the Tara Crawford, President Toast of Las Olas Toastmasters event. Toastmaster Tara Crawford Club presenting the Hope presented the plan to raise the Floats Vision needed funds at the upcoming event in March 2012, and Toastmasters Kathleen Beasley, Jorg Hrusch, Karl Sylvestre, Max Khristov, and Terry Conover provided support and ideas throughout the planning process and at the event. Toastmaster Steve Bradbery (http://www. stevebplayssax.com) played the “magical sax” making it a perfect evening. Over 60 attendees signed up to support the main fundraising event on March 31, 2012, Hope Floats New River Day of Celebration, planned to include a children’s choir, speeches, and a flotilla of candlelit boats making their way from Esplanade Park in Ft. Lauderdale to the Ocean, led by Toastmaster Kayakers. It was a GREAT Toastmaster effort Guests seen enjoying the Hope Floats Project on showcasing the benefits of Toastmasters communication and Children’s Grief Awareness Day, Nov. 17, 2011 leadership training in ACTION, and we plan on taking it to the next level in March 2012! A Story of Breakthrough NextEra Energy employee and Toastmaster member Ed Korkowski has been a busy man lately. The company's Nuclear Division recently spotlighted Ed as "A Story of Breakthrough," a regular series that features team members who model the right behaviors and values. Ed is part of the Nuclear Component Support and Inspections team and is based in Juno Beach, Florida. Ed's cube has been quiet lately though, because he's been spending his days at NextEra's Point Beach nuclear facility helping with steam generator inspections. In the past few years, Ed has taken step after step to improve himself personally and professionally. Each step has led him to another step, and each milestone has opened more doors. Take this, for example: Ed went back to school in 2008 so that he could better advance within the company. He graduated from the Energy Management Program at Bismarck State College after learning Ed Korkowski at a volunteer about the program on the NextEra Energy website. He took a public event with NextEra Energy speaking class, which led him to join Toastmasters and help charter the Chairman and CEO Lew Hay. Toastmasters Employee Network Group at Juno Beach. That led him to attend a Tony Robbins seminar in Fort Lauderdale, which inspired him to volunteer. And that effort landed him on a beach helping pick up trash, where he ended up cleaning a section of beach with NextEra Energy President and CEO Lew Hay. One step led to another that led to another. And Ed finished school this August. To continue the trend of bettering himself, Ed recently volunteered to join the newly-formed Juno Beach Engagement Team. He joined the team to help improve teamwork, help other employees become more engaged and help enhance overall work-life balance, all of which support the core principles of the Nuclear Division. The Engagement Team also helps him network, fostering relationships with people who he doesn't come in to contact with every day. "Every connection I make at work makes my job a little bit easier, because I learn something new from each person I meet," says Ed. "Every little thing you do while getting 'engaged' can have a substantial effect on your life going forward." Ed GOT the job he was after. His hard work and perseverance paid off recently when Ed was promoted. His new position is, Steam Generator Program Manager with responsibilities for ensuring proper inspection and maintenance of the fleet's nuclear steam generators. Congratulations Edward!
Have Fun – Speak on the Run By: Kristin DeLuca, Division D Governor
Ever wish you had uninterrupted time to practice a speech? Try running a marathon! On October 9, Division D Governor Kristin DeLuca completed the Long Beach Marathon in California. Running with her fiancé Robert Binkley, and running partner Melissa Henderson, she had 26.2 miles of uninterrupted speech practice time. Kristin said, “When I’m running I can practice a speech in my head, or try it out on the person I am running with”. She added, “If they start to speed up, I know the speech needs more work!” This was Kristin’s fourth marathon, having completed marathons in Alaska, NYC, and San Francisco.

IT Volunteer - Shy No More By: Marc Mondry
O
nce happy to hide in her cube, Verizon IT’s Bett Correa now leads and mentors with Toastmasters International. Enterprise and Wholesale IT’s Bett Correa describes her former self as, “a shy programmer who would hide in her cube.”
Her previous managers would ask her to join client calls and she would say, “I don’t want to talk to anyone. I just wanted to code!” Looking to further her career and take on new challenges, in 2005 Bett joined Toastmasters, an organization dedicated to leadership and public speaking training and

development. The group’s motto is “Where Leaders are Made” After only a few months of attending meetings at Toastmasters, Bett gained the confidence that eventually led to her moving into a position as a systems architect. She said proudly, “The skills I learned gave me the tools I needed to create agendas, follow up with people on action items, take minutes, organize a presentation, and organize an event. Toastmasters really brought me out of my shell and allowed me to apply for a job as a systems analyst and then as an architect in the end-toend architecture group. I was able to contribute to the FiOS Digital Voice project as one of the main architects.” Deciding to give back to the organization that made such an impact on her life, Bett began volunteering her time at Toastmasters to help develop other people’s leadership skills. She quickly became president of her local club where she built it up from 12 members to 27 during her term. As an officer, Bett was responsible for running meetings, encouraging club members to make goals, leading executive meetings with six other officers, and building membership. Now, Bett’s role with Toastmasters has grown to include mentorship of new members and a broad leadership position in the Tampa, FL area where she sponsors two youth leadership programs. The Youth Leadership program is an eight-week program that allows 11 to 17 year olds to run their own meetings, give speeches, give evaluations on speeches. They also hold offices such as President and Vice President. “My goal is for the Toastmasters in the Tampa area to run five Youth Leadership programs before July 2012,” Bett explains. She strongly recommends that every Toastmaster identify a group and coordinate a Youth Leadership Program. You will change lives for the better – including your own! 12
The Roller Coaster Ride Recently our club gathered after work hours to offer a farewell party to our Club President, Audrey Burzynski and Webmaster Brent Gimpel who were moving on to pursue new endeavors. Being a corporate club not only did the company NextEra Energy lose two great employees but we, the High Voltage Voices club, lost two key officers and friends. The club faced another big challenge: it was losing two members, who were nearly done with their Competent Communicator manuals. Fortunately, both Audrey and Brent committed to complete their Competent Communicators’ goals before leaving. They knew too well what it would mean for the club to lose two of its front runners toward achieving those goals. It would take weeks and weeks for other members to catch up to them. Having full understanding of what it takes to satisfy the L to R: Patricia Vallejo, Irene Gassko, Irina Pepper, educational goals and the Distinguished Club goals was Juan Cano, Cheryl Sellers, Mandy Warren paramount. Having members committed to support the club goals was the turning point. We got immediate guidance through our Area Governor Ed Korkowski, on how to handle a mid-term officer departure. Based on that guidance, our VP of Education, Cheryl Sellers took on the Interim President’s role and we rushed to organize Emergency Elections to select an Interim President. Within 3 weeks we had a new Interim President, Irina Pepper, and we did not miss our weekly club meeting once. Things began to recover some sense of normalcy. We focused on regrouping and realigning the club goals, identifying members who would commit to pursue their educational goals, to participate in the local contests and to volunteer at the Area and Division contests. We created a Buddy System where every officer of the club chose 2-3 members to keep in touch with, support, and motivate them to attend the meetings, sign up for roles and bring guests. We want every member to know that their presence matters. In addition, we reviewed the mentor program’s assignment list to ensure all new members have an active mentor-mentee relationship, and we rotated current member/mentor assignments so that there were renewed interest and fresh contribution. Then the dues payment season arrived. Being part of a demanding work environment, one of our challenges is the member turnover. Our members claim they are just too busy between work and travel. Our membership dropped from 38 to 27 in the September 2011 period. We are now focusing on building up our membership with the advice and guidance of our Area Governor Ed Korkowski. We conducted a membership drive during lunch time when most employees gather in the Cafeteria. In an hour, we have 2 new members, 10 interested parties, a manager who would like to offer the Toastmaster opportunity to his direct reports and an officer of another social club, who invited us to present about Toastmasters opportunity to its members. On this front, things are looking up again. Even though, the High Voltage Voices (HVV) club is only three years old club it hads earned President’s Distinguished club award in each year standing. Despite the recent roller coaster ride and only four months into the current Toastmaster’s fiscal year, the club has already earned 5 points toward Distinguished Club designation. Three members completed their Competent Communicator manuals; one member completed her Competent Leader manual. On top of it, we brought in 4 new members, trained 7 officers and submitted our dues on time. Most recently we celebrated Toastmaster International’s Anniversary at our October 20 meeting. Discovering TMI history, we connected with the perseverance, the commitment and the vision of Dr Ralph C. Smedley and got inspired to stay firm on our Toastmasters path. It helped us realize that we are part of a legacy that lives on in each of us, in our transformation - from whatever level of public speaking and leadership competency we started at, until we blossom to a point where we feel fully self-expressed, confident and actualized with our potential. Vision, commitment and perseverance are keys to the club’s success. Let the vision live on….

Coaching Your Way to Excellence By: Butch Phelps, D-47 Club Coach Chair
A
leader never knows just how good of a leader he really is until he puts his abilities into action. Many believe knowledge is power; however, without action knowledge is only potential power. Toastmasters has taught you how to be a leader. Now is the time to put your knowledge to work. Toastmasters provides you with a great opportunity to see how well you have learned to be leader by challenging you to be coaches, mentors, and sponsors of clubs. Toastmasters has put in front of you these roles to help you complete your Advanced Leader Silver in order for you to obtain your DTM. The best part about coaching a club that is in trouble is the self satisfaction that you get knowing that
Butch Phelps, D47 Club Coach Chair East
you have shared your abilities with a struggling club and that you are allowing that club to enjoy the many benefits of Toastmasters. So what is in it for you when you become a coach, mentor, or sponsor? You become a leader and not just a follower. You will develop your team- building skills by sharing your expertise as a Toastmaster. Yes you do have expertise at this point, but you will never know it until you put yourself in the position of coach or mentor. You will develop your diplomatic dexterity and improve your proficiency as a facilitator and negotiator. Just like giving speeches prepares for you for speaking in front of a group, learning to be more diplomatic and a better facilitator requires getting your hands dirty by practicing diplomacy and facilitating. If you are afraid of the work, relax! You will usually have a partner to help you coach or mentor a club. The best part for you is the reward you will receive from seeing the growth of the members of the club you are coaching as the club takes off. Coaching or mentoring a club will challenge everything you know, but Toastmasters provides you with the help to make you successful. As the Club Coach Chairs, Steve Zeris (Club Coach Chair West) and I (Club Coach Chair East) will be providing webinars, conference calls, and support for you to be successful. Our District Leadership will be helping us help you to be great! Deciding to be a coach or mentor is about giving back to Toastmasters and sharing what Toastmasters has given to you. As a DTM and past District Officer, I can tell you that Toastmasters taught me how to avoid procrastination, improve my time management, and take action to do the things I was most afraid to do. Challenge yourself to step up and do the things that scare you the most in Toastmasters. We will support you and help you build your confidence to be the best leader you can be. Becoming a coach is easy! If you are on the West coast of Florida, just contact Butch Phelps at bphelps@ toastmastersd47,org, Steve Zeris at steve@stevezeris, or Ron Rice at rrice@toastmastersd47.org . Dolls for World Peace Touch Bahamian Kids By: Anthony (Tony) Longley – District 47 PRO
For most people, a vacation trip means relaxation, sight-seeing, maybe some shopping or taking in the local culture and entertainment, but whoever thinks about performing a charitable deed while on vacation? South Florida resident, Toastmaster Lydia Harris did just that while on a recent cruise to Nassau, Bahamas. She donated an assortment of flannel dolls to The Bahamas Children’s Emergency Hostel, The Children’s Wards of Princess Margaret Hospital, and Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre. Lydia, a registered nurse is a volunteer with “Dolls for World Peace”, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting world peace and to inspiring others to reach out to children around the world who have been traumatized by loss and bring them a drop of tenderness. Just prior to departing Florida Left to Right: Pamela D. Rolle, DTM - District 47 Governor; for her cruise to Nassau, Lydia who is the Area 25 Nakita Smith, Asst Administrator - Bahamas Children's Emergency Governor, contacted Distinguished Toastmaster Hostel; Portia Ferguson, Nursing Officer-Children's Ward, Princess Pamela D. Rolle, the current District 47 Governor Margaret Hospital; Charlene Fernander, Social Worker - Health (DG) who resides in Nassau. District 47 comprises Social Services, Sandilands Rehabilitation Center; TM Lydia Harris - Area 25 Governor, District 47; Carletha Toote, President about 280 Toastmasters Clubs in South Florida and Healing Communicators TM Club 7178. The Bahamas. Lydia wanted an opportunity to visit a Toastmasters Club while in Nassau and to make a donation of the dolls to some charitable organizations that cater to the needs of children. Pamela arranged for a visit to her home club, Healing Communicators Toastmasters Club 7178. Shining Stars Youth Leadership Program By Adam Hsu, CC, CL – JPMC Highlanders #680990 President 2011-2012
Did you know that Toastmasters offers a program geared towards helping youths get a head-start with improving their communication and leadership skills? As members of Toastmasters we may all be very much aware that Toastmasters is an organization “Where Leaders are Made”. We may also tend to believe that its offerings are strictly geared towards adults as the majority of clubs consists of members who are college students, professionals, and/or retirees. At least that was what I believed until I attended a workshop at the 2010 Spring Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) where Jim Setaro, DTM presented on the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program (YLP). Jim explained in his presentation that it was one of the most rewarding experiences that he has personally been involved with, which is why he currently serves as the Youth Leadership Program advisor for District 47 and continues to promote the program to any and all Toastmasters clubs looking for opportunities to achieve something beyond the accomplishments of the club members. At the conclusion of Jim Setaro’s presentation I was very excited at the possibility of running a Youth Leadership Program; however I did not have a specific group of youths that I could approach for the opportunity. Nonetheless, I kept Jim’s presentation and his contact information should an opportunity arise in the future. A few months passed and one day a co-worker approach me about the possibility of having our club (JPMC Highlanders) attend a conference organized by his church where several organizations were invited to setup a table to present to attendees of the conference the benefits of joining their professional organization(s). Our club gladly accepted the opportunity for more PR and Toastmasters was a big hit, especially among the youths attending the conference. They were immediately eager to find out how they could join Adam Hsu, JPMC Club President & YLP Coordinator with YLP Graduates. Toastmasters and how they could locate the club nearest to their school or place of residence. Small problem - almost all of the youths who inquired about joining Toastmasters were not yet in college and some were as young as 8 years old. It didn’t take me long to realize that this was a perfect opportunity to partner with the church to establish a Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. I discussed the opportunity with my co-worker, Noah Gyimah, who had invited our club to the conference and before I could finish explaining the details of the Youth Leadership Program he was already getting a sign-up sheet passed around to collect names of those who were interested in participating. The following few weeks were a blur as we moved quickly to get our club to sponsor the Youth Leadership Program, obtain commitments from potential participants, and order the necessary Youth Leadership Program kits from Toastmasters International. A total of fifteen eager youths between the ages of 10 to 19 registered for the Youth Leadership Program and on September 2, 2011 we began the first of our 8-week sessions. As anyone would expect, the YLP participants were extremely timid and unsure of what to even say in their first attempts at speaking in front of an audience. We observed speeches with long periods of silence, nervous fidgeting, extremely short deliveries, and plenty of UMs and AHs. However, as weeks passed the YLP participants followed the lessons in their YLP participant handbooks and began applying the concepts of properly planning and delivering speeches reviewed at each meeting. Surprisingly, by the third week when table topics was introduced almost all of the
16
YLP participants were not only eager to participate, they began challenging each other to come up with the most creative impromptu responses. As each week passed we watched the YLP participants continue to progress and flourish into confident and enthusiastic speakers who were not afraid to overcome their anxieties and fears of public speaking. By the eighth and final week we had concluded with all of the speeches and lessons and the YLP participants were given the responsibility of planning their own graduation, which provided them with an opportunity to practice critical leadership skills such as planning, delegating, negotiating, and following-up. The graduation ceremony was the denouement of the entire 8-week Youth Leadership Program, where two of the best speakers were selected by the YLP participants to showcase their ability to deliver a speech with eloquence and confidence in front of a large audience. Neither YLP speakers disappointed. They gave thoughtful speeches that recognized the benefits of their newly developed skills, and they thanked the JPMC Highlanders Toastmasters club for sponsoring the Youth Leadership Program. Awards were presented for Best Grammarian, Time Keeper, AH Counter, Table Topics, Evaluator, Speaker and Most Improved YLP participant as determined by the YLP participants; and finally graduation certificates were presented to all Youth Leadership Program participants for their well-deserved accomplishment of successfully completing the entire program. Many thanks to the following Toastmasters and dignitaries who attended the graduation ceremony and provided the support and encouragement to the JPMC Highlanders club: Bett Correa, DTM – District 47, Division C Governor; Jim Setaro, DTM – District 47, Youth Leadership Program Advisor; Matthew Siewert, ALB, CC – District 47, Area 35 Governor; Adam Hsu, CC, CL – Shining Stars Youth Leadership Program; Noah Gyimah – Shining Stars Youth Leadership Program Asst. Coordinator, and Abhishek Chauhan – JPMC Highlanders Member. It was due to the commitment of these outstanding Toastmasters that this Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program was a resounding success.
Suncoast Shines with Youth Leadership Program By: Joe H. Jones
On September 9th, 2011, eighteen young people came for the first meeting of their Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program (YLP). Eight weeks later on November 10th, all eighteen gave their final speeches during the YLP graduation ceremony held at the India Culture Centre in Tampa, Florida. This is the fourth consecutive year for the Tampa Toastmasters YLP sponsored by Suncoast Toastmasters and Tamil Sneham Inc. This group is headed by Toastmaster Joe H. Jones, and Tamil Sneham leader, Jay Thabaraj. “Our program has become such a hit in the community that already there is a list of over 30 students waiting for the next one to start. It is Front row from left; Nicholas Rampersaud, Keerthi Premkanth (voted Best Speaker), Dev Patel, and Mallika Bhatta. Back row includes two adults. Left absolutely incredible what these youth side back is Jay Thabaraj (Tamil Sneham), YLP Coordinator and back row, can do after an eight week program”, right side is, Joe H. Jones, YLP Facilitator. said Joe Jones. Speeches each week were videotaped by Sue Boe and Frank Shea and posted on YouTube so that the students could review their performances. The top three speakers from the graduation ceremony competed at a regular Suncoast Toastmasters meeting for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The top speaker was Keerthi Premkanth. The program is open to the public, but all members of this group are from India, and range in age from 11-15 years of age. What were you doing when you were their age?

Congratulations to Kristin & Robert On 11-11-11 Division D Governor Kristin DeLuca married Robert Binkley. They were married on Fort Lauderdale beach at 11:11am. A beach party followed that evening. Contrary to expectations, there were no speeches at the wedding! So here is an excerpt of the speech that they didn’t get to hear: “I would like to thank my fellow Toastmasters for all the warm wishes we have received and I’m looking forward to resume giving speeches soon as Kristin Binkley."
A New Avenue to Membership Growth By Josh Frank – District Corporate Clubs Chair
So far I have kept my second agenda at the Corporate Club Committee a secret because I have not wanted to dilute my mission to enhance and rehabilitate corporate clubs. There is no connection on this second agenda other than an opportunity to create a better business environment in the community and provide an opportunity for experience in creating business projects. Indeed this second project is a membership building opportunity for open clubs and possibly a membership building opportunity for vocational school clubs that seek to open their clubs as a marketing tool. So what’s the secret? . . . A well implemented “Job Interview Workshop” at a large venue in a major metropolitan area. The interactive program will be open to Toastmasters and non-Toastmasters and is designed to show Josh Frank, D47 Corporate Clubs Chair people how to interview more successfully. I have a skeletal crew from District 84, where we successfully put on two events, to help. I need some willing HR Toastmaster speakers and toastmaster organizers. This is a great opportunity for any club in a major metropolitan area that wants to grow membership and wants a meaningful High Performance Leadership experience for DTM credit. Game on! Who wants to step up? Toastmasters: “Where Leaders Are Made!” ---Josh Frank, Corporate Club Committee Chair, District 47, Cell 772-633-4234, bizwiz.frank2@gmail. com 18
