A Clear View I recently returned from a business trip to Zurich, Switzerland. While there, I had the opportunity to visit Mount Titlis. Known as a glacier paradise, Titlis is the highest vantage point (10,623 ft) in Central Switzerland. It gained fame as the site of the world's first revolving cable car. The first ascent of the Titlis was made in 1739. On 21 January, 1904 the first ski ascent of Mount Titlis was made and in March, 1967 the cable car to the Titlis was inaugurated.

The view from the summit of this mountain was so breathtaking, it was enough to neutralize the shock I felt on hearing its name. As I stood on the highest point of Titlis, it felt like I was playing tug-o-war with the fierce winds. Snow was all around, as far as the eyes could see; it looked as if a thick white blanket was spread across the hills and valleys. The air was fresh and crisp as I stood there in awe as the clouds floated past my shoulders. I stretched my arms toward the skies and thought to myself, “This must be heaven.” It was a bone-chilling cold day, but I stayed at the top of the mountain for an extended period - just to take in the view and breathe in the air. The thought crossed my mind that this would be a great place to have a Toastmasters meeting.

Pamela riding the cable car on Mt. Titlis.

On the ride down in the revolving cable car, I marveled at the beauty and mystic quality of nature. Suddenly, the experience I was living at that moment became more meaningful. I realized that if I had not faced the challenge of getting to the top of the mountain, I would not have experienced the most wonderful and unforgettable rewards that awaited me there. The beauty that was revealed from the mountaintop was not evident at the bottom. Everyone had to take the journey to the top to get the unknown benefits that awaited us. When I got off the cable car at the bottom, I looked back up toward the top and was totally satisfied that I had a clear view.

My visit to Titlis reminded me of membership in Toastmasters. As a member of the most successful leadership and communication organization in the world, do you have a clear view of your path to success? As a Club Officer, do you have a clear view of the path on which you are leading your club? Will this path cause you to leave a legacy of which you can be proud? We have under three months left in our Toastmasters fiscal year and I know you are working toward achieving an education goal or introducing a new member to your club. Think about what the view would be like when you achieve an education goal, welcome a new member or when your club achieves ‘Distinguished’ status. It’s a wonderful feeling of accomplishment! Imagine you are on that mountaintop with the clouds all around you and as you feel the crisp cold air you get the feeling that you can conquer the world.

Pamela doing a happy dance

at the foot of Mt. Titlis. The mountaintop is a great way to see nature at its best. Over the next few months, I encourage you to focus on achieving success individually and collectively. Focus on the Distinguished Club Program, mentor a new member, coach a club that needs help and develop your skills by actively participating in club meetings. In a few weeks, new leaders will be appointed and elected at various levels from the club through to the District. This is another aspect of your Toastmasters Pamela geting a clear view from training, so I encourage you to step forward and accept the challenge to lead. I can the summit of Mt. Titlis. assure you, it will be another mountaintop experience that you will never get if you remain standing at the bottom. I can guarantee you will have a clear view of success.

Why You Should be Speaking Outside of Toastmasters

The biggest District Conference in our history will be held in Sarasota May 4-6th. As many of you know, if you have attended a conference, we have one of the best conference books in all of Toastmasters. This year, our KEEPSAKE Conference Book will be full color and a professionally bound, 100 page commemorative edition.

By: Matt Kinsey, LGET-East, DTM

You want to have your club represented ... for all time. In the past, most clubs have either purchased a half page ad for $50 or full page for $100. Use your club funds to congratulate your club and/or member achievement or pass the hat to raise funds. Either way your club should be represented. Use a club photo or something that shows your club character. If you any have questions, please call 727-643-8796 or CLICK on the ad below and purchase your ad TODAY!

I recently met with a Toastmaster who had just finished his last speech for his Advanced Communicator Gold award. This means that he’d completed at least 40 different projects within Toastmasters. After congratulating him for his accomplishment, I asked him how many times he’s spoken outside of Toastmasters since he’s joined. His answer was none. In the three years it had taken him to complete his 40 speeches, he’d never spoken to a group outside of Toastmasters. I wonder if he’s missed the point of Toastmasters completely. Here are three reasons you should be speaking outside of Toastmasters. Toastmasters is the Laboratory, not the Real World Toastmaster’s is a safe place to fail. It is purposely designed to give people an environment that encourages speakers to stretch their boundaries and try new things. Oftentimes when we attempt new things, it doesn’t go well Matt Kinsey, DTM at first. The Toastmasters club provides a nurturing laboratory without significant consequences for poor performance. This is done so that you can be prepared for when it does count. Not speaking outside of Toastmasters is like joining the track team, participating in every practice but never competing in a track meet. The public is seldom as nice to you as your fellow club members are. The public won’t pay as much attention to you as your club will. They probably won’t laugh as much, but the public is where you really know how much you’ve improved. You Have a Message that Only You can Share I struggled with sharing my own stories for years because of the family in which I was raised. We were allowed to share everyone else’s success, but sharing our own success was often seen as bragging. For years, I shared other people’s stories. I was also a pretty good guy. I never got into drugs or criminal activity. I never hit rock bottom. I questioned why others would want to hear my story when they could hear about Helen Keller, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, or an Olympic Champion instead. What was my story compared to theirs? A mentor finally got through to me when he told me, “You are a unique individual, formed by the Divine, influenced by parents, teachers, coaches and life events. No one else can share what you can.” The late Keith Harrell said that what speakers do is to give hope. Speakers give people hope that they can change their situation, improve their lives and overcome their challenges. When you share your stories of failure, challenge and success, you have the opportunity to change another person’s life. Perhaps you are the only person who can give them that message because of who you are. Your message is important. Share what Toastmasters Has Done for You If I haven’t convinced you yet that you should speak outside of Toastmasters, then perhaps this will help. If you appreciate what Toastmasters has given you in terms of developing your communication and leadership skills, then you should be out speaking to other groups about this. Despite the tremendous success of Toastmasters in The Bahamas, less than 1/3 of 1% of everyone in The Bahamas is a member of Toastmasters. You probably know hundreds of people who would benefit from joining Toastmasters. By sharing your story at other community organizations, companies, or churches, you can influence dozens or hundreds to consider what Toastmasters can do for them.

Ron Rice, LGM-West, DTM

Many of us ask this of ourselves on a regular basis, "Am I doing enough"? The funny thing is, we are often our own worst critics. We hold ourselves to a higher standard than we hold others to (or others hold us). In a recent conversation with a fellow Toastmaster in District 47, after thanking her for her outstanding efforts and her dedication as a leader she commented that I must be kidding. "Do you know how many people I've let down?" she asked. I thought to myself... No, I don't. I only know of several members that look up to her and attempt to emulate her. I share this because there are many more of you out there that might be feeling like you aren't doing enough, didn't achieve enough, or haven't lived up to your own expectations. Ron Rice, DTM We all have things we could have done differently, and who hasn't let someone down in the past? I want to encourage you (as individuals and as clubs) to remember that as long as we are earnestly trying to achieve our goals, we are doing enough. It is when we begin to believe those little voices of doubt and discouragement and stop trying that we allow failure to become an option.

Be the voice of encouragement and remember that you can make a difference. I assure you - that is enough! 6

What Makes a Club Really Successful? By Henry Flood, ACS, CL - President of the North Miami Beach Toastmasters Club

Maintaining club strength at 20 or more members is an enduring challenge for Toastmaster Clubs across the country. Remaining a 20 plus club is made more difficult by the reality that 30 to 40% of a club’s membership turns over each year. Enter Lance Miller, the 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking. Toastmaster Miller knows something about club building. He built his home club from 12 to 95 members and made his club the number 4 club in the world.

Speaking to a crowd of nearly 100, largely from clubs throughout Division E, Lance immediately exploded this myth about club building: The Toastmasters organization cannot really build your club; It offers many tools for club building. Lance believes that successful club building arises from what clubs do to create a dynamic club experience and what the whole club does to market itself effectively. Creating a Dynamic Club Experience The Toastmaster experience must be more than a mere meeting. There are six keys articulated by Toastmasters that lead to having a dynamic club experience for both members and guests: 1. A good venue suitable for public speaking 2. An environment where guests are welcomed, recognized and followed up. Trial and repeat visits equal new members. 3. A fun and friendly atmosphere 4. Meetings that start, run and end on time 5. Manual speeches given consistently at every meeting 6. Excellent speech and meeting evaluations that build member skills and confidence 19

Continuous and Effective Marketing Marketing is a specialized skill that most people do not possess in great quantity within the Toastmaster environment. This makes marketing a club a challenging experience. Successful clubs are those where the Vice President for Public Relations and his or her helpers create programs and campaigns that attract guests to the club meeting. The public relations and membership teams must work together to build membership who in turn are serviced by the Vice President of Education who shepherds members through the speaking and leadership manuals. Attendees learned that club building and marketing a club is a proactive challenge and not a passive activity. Effective marketing encompasses several concurrent and continuous activities throughout the Toastmaster year according to Toastmaster Miller. Successful clubs do these things: 1. Have a web site that is easy to navigate and understand 2. Utilize the various forms of social media (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) 3. Build, maintain and market frequently to its email list 4. Distribute flyers to businesses within the club’s service area 5. Create and promote special meetings that offer something of value to attract guests 6. Invite guests that will draw visitors 7. Sponsor outside events and parties that might be tied to seasonal holidays 8. Have members speak outside the club environment or do speechcrafts 9. Promote Toastmasters to other service clubs in your area (Rotary, Kiwanis, C of C) Participants were treated to Lance’s 2005 winning speech making him a World Champion of Public Speaking. The theme of that speech is encompassed in a single word—Validation.

Lance Miller receives a plaque of appreciation from Matt Kinsey, LGET East.

Matt Kinsey, LGET EAST and Mitch McInnis, Division E Governor thank David Parker from Bank United for hosting the event with Lance Miller.

Neil MacLaren, 79, beloved husband, musician, teacher and Distinguished Toastmaster died after a long illness and a gallant fight on February 29, 2012. Neil was a continuous member of EarlyBird Toastmasters in Fort Lauderdale since 1973. He served many roles within Toastmasters at the club, area and division levels, culminating as Outstanding Division Governor for Florida and the Bahamas in 1978. He also served as the organist at the Toastmasters International Convention in Orlando, Florida in 1981. Neil was ever-present at his club with both advice and corny jokes. At each holiday party, he would present a dramatic reading of The Night Before Christmas. There is an online photo montage and formal obituary but more in keeping would be another opportunity for dramatic reading in A Prayer for Bad Times. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Neil MacLaren may be made to the Morning Musicale Scholarship Fund, c/o D. Gant 320 Holly Lane, Plantation, FL 33317 or to Oakland Park Kiwanis Club, c/o M.L.Adams, 5441 NE 4th Ave. Oakland Park, Fl. 33334. Neil leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary and his many students of music and speaking, past and present. They were all the joy of his life.
