Welcome to Sarasota Florida! For many months a team of members worked tirelessly to prepare for your arrival. Our conference weekend is time to celebrate your accomplishments with other members across our District. This conference is also very significant for all of us as it will be our last conference together as a combined District - east and west coast. As of July 1, 2012, our District will split; District 47 will retain clubs on the east coast of Florida and The Bahamas, and District 48 will encompass all clubs currently on the west coast of Florida. On Friday night, all members who have achieved education awards will be recognized. This is one of the highlights of the opening ceremony, and we are excited about the opportunity to celebrate your individual achievements Pamela D. Rolle, DTM with you. We have an exciting session designed especially for all First Timers. There will be lots of prizes and surprises. You won’t want to miss this special event! You will hear nine Table Topics contestants show off their extemporaneous speaking skills on Friday night. You will also hear speakers from each division compete in the International Speech Contest on Saturday night. The winner of this contest will represent the District at the Toastmasters International Convention in Orlando, Florida in August. We are pleased to have the 2010 World Champion of Public Speaking, David Henderson, as our keynote speaker. We are equally pleased to welcome the 2011 European Speaking Champion, Olivia Schofield, as our featured speaker. Welcome David and Olivia! We are thrilled to have you share your time with us. This year, we will present the 2012 Communication & Leadership Award to Stephen Queior, the President and CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce. This award will be presented at the C & L Award luncheon on Saturday afternoon. We are very pleased he has accepted this honor! Education sessions will be held throughout the day on Saturday where workshop presenters will share valuable information that will help you develop individually and build stronger clubs. The business meeting on Saturday afternoon will be a historic one. Each District (47 & 48) will meet in separate sessions to elect leaders for 2012 – 2013. We are looking forward to your attendance as more prizes will be presented to clubs during this time. All members who earned their Distinguished Toastmaster Award (DTM) designation will be recognized at the DTM walk on Saturday evening after the International Speech Contest. This conference could not be successful without you our members. Thank you for sharing your time with us. We are here to serve you and meet your needs as you work toward achieving success in Toastmasters. If you have not yet registered, you still have a small window of opportunity to join us in Sarasota. It will be the ultimate networking experience during a weekend of learning and fun. See you in Sarasota, Florida at our 2012 District Spring Conference… ‘The Greatest Event on Earth’

Low Membership: Need Answers? Ask Questions

Let Me tell You a Story By: Kathy Furbush, LGET-West, DTM

By: Hieu Huynh, LGM-East, DTM

…about the miracle of Toastmasters. If you are reading this message, you most definitely are a Toastmaster and if you are still in Toastmasters, you have been changed by the experience.

Toastmasters International's Success 101 flier states that "up to 40 percent of your current members will leave this year." I believe there's a way to find out why members leave - ask them. Say your club has 20 members and so far, only 10 have renewed. Do you know why each of the other 10 members have not renewed yet? If you don't know, give them a call. Sometimes it feels good to get a phone call from a fellow member.

If not you, you probably have known someone who has been touched by the miracle of the Toastmasters experience. It is not about just getting up and giving a speech, it’s about finding your confidence…finding your voice. As Lt. Gov. Education and Training, I have had the wonderful opportunity to see what a great effect Toastmasters has had on all of you. I’ve seen the “magic” of contests in clubs, areas, divisions and the district. These events are much more than a contest… they are a fast track to greatness. I’ve also seen the power of training. If done right, with practice and apprenticeship, we know what is meant by “Toastmasters, Where Leaders are Made”.

Hieu Huynh, DTM x2

Kathy Furbush, LGET-West, DTM

Lance Miller, 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking, once said in that famous CD we’ve all heard -“How to Build a Championship Club” - that if you want to be a great tennis player, you can’t play every six months. To be a great speaker you have to speak.” I think the thing that makes our district so special is that all of you have taken this to heart. For three years in a row, our District has had more CCs, more ACs and more Leadership Awards than any district in the world. This District is OUTSTANDING and THE WORLD IS WATCHING US! With your help, we are well on our way to a 4-peat (4 years in a row as a President’s Distinguished District!). To do that, do you know someone who would benefit from the Toastmaster experience? Do them a favor and talk to them, pick them up and bring them to a club meeting, then watch them blossom. The rest is the “magic” of Toastmasters.

Here are some frequent responses and possible suggestions: 1. I'm too busy to make the meeting. - Change the time and/or location that may make it more convenient. This may be better for others as well. 2. I've completed my CC (or done enough speeches). There's nothing left to do. - Show the benefits of additional skills learned in the advanced manuals and also the leadership opportunities. 3. I'm tired of coming to every meeting and doing multiple roles. - Lessen their load. Perhaps schedule only 1 or 2 speeches and eliminate some of the ancillary roles. Sometimes the best way to find an answer is to ask a question.

Spring has Arrived! Ron Rice, LGM-West, DTM

The Toastmaster’s Promise By: Mat Kinsey, LGET East, DTM

Does your club deliver on the Toastmaster’s Promise? As we get to the end of another Toastmasters year, it’s a good idea to look at your club and ask “Did our club deliver on the Toastmaster’s promise this year?” What does that mean to you? What does it mean to your members? To me, the question really means “Do we offer a quality club experience for our members?” A great tool to help you decide is Moments of Truth from Toastmasters International. It is available as a free download. Every club should go through this program at least once a year to help improve. A quality club means exciting meetings, members reaching their goals, officers getting trained and excellent feedback. With 2 months left in our reporting year, there’s still time to meet your goals. Our Matt Kinsey, LGET-East, DTM goal at the beginning of the year was for every club to be Distinguished or better. It has never happened in the history of our District and we would love for it to happen this year. We already have 67 Distinguished Clubs. That leaves 200 more to go. Carefully review the Distinguished Club Program status and make sure you understand what it will take to be Distinguished. Your Area Governors are hard at work through June 30 to help you where they can. Please reach out to them and make it a successful year for your club and your members.

Easter has past, the birds all are singing. Spring has arrived, and you know what that’s bringing? A conference to celebrate, all that we’ve done, Come join us in Sarasota, for some fun in the sun! If that’s not enough, I think you should know, Our wonderful District, continues to grow. So join me in welcoming, our newest additions, And wish them the best, on their new expeditions!

Volunteering: Get Involved! By: Curtis Bryan, ACG, ALB

Have you ever done anything helpful for someone without seeking recognition or reward? If so, congratulations! If not, I invite you to ‘get involved’ and volunteer today! While volunteering will not reap you financial rewards, the feeling of joy you get from helping someone is something you won’t want to trade for all the money in the world. Not to mention the feeling of self-worth and the respect you will earn. As a volunteer for a large youth organization, I am overjoyed when the young people I work with surmount their challenges and succeed. There are many types of volunteering: from skills-based volunteering in developing countries, to virtual, micro, environmental, corporate and even school volunteering. People volunteer for various reasons: to develop their own skills, to meet others, to network, to have fun, among others.

Curtis Bryan, Area 80 Governor

In The Bahamas, a new program has been set up by the government called “Volunteer Bahamas”. Its mission is to build national unity through a program of cooperation, sharing and service. There are many goals the government wishes to achieve through this program: 1. To provide maximum opportunities for the citizens and residents of The Bahamas to “get involved” in community building and national service. 2. To provide additional resources - particularly human capital - to community- based and charitable organizations. 3. To provide a support system for a national mentoring program for young men and women. 4. To optimize training/apprenticeship opportunities for citizens of The Bahamas, particularly young people and give a greater sense of community spirit and national pride. In addition, this program will complement a social intervention component, which will focus on urban community and youth development programs in New Providence and Grand Bahama and the development of a program, which targets "at-risk" youth and first offenders. As a young person, I have faced many challenges in life including losing my mother at a very young age and dropping out of college many times. Volunteerism has become a passion of mine simply because of the persons who have helped me to become a better person. Because of this experience I became a volunteer for a very large church-based organization and today I serve as its second in charge. As Toastmasters, we can all be volunteers. Why not volunteer with a charitable organization and help someone? Let us give back to our communities. Feel the joy when you assist some child or family. Experience the feeling of self-worth that volunteerism brings. Enhance the skills you did not even think you had. Volunteer today. You won’t regret it! 6

It’s That Time Again … Dues Renewal Tips!

Open House Showcase

By: Brian Turcotte, Dues Renewal Chair, District 47

The time has come for club members to renew their dues!

Here are a few tips that will help ease the dues blues when processing membership payments. Club Officers simply log in to the www.toastmasters. org/login.aspx. Enter your user name and personal password (a club password is no longer required). 1. Once logged in, click on Members site (top left of page) Hieu Huynh, D47 LGM - East

2. Click on the Club Central link (middle left of page) 3. Click on the club name and number for which you are paying dues (middle of page)

Brian Turcotte, Dues Renewal Chair, D47

4. Under Conduct Club Business click on Pay dues (center of page) 5. Under Fill orders with select Future (center of page) 6. Select the members for whom you wish to pay dues (center of page).

Some important notes regarding membership payments processing: "" Dues must be paid for a minimum of six members and at least three must be renewing. "" We do not suggest submitting renewal by email because it is not secure. "" The payment deadline for April dues is April 1, 2012. "" Submitting dues by April 1 earns each club half of DCP goal #10. If paying by check, you can print the list with the renewing members indicated and mail it, along with payment to Toastmasters International. Checks must be made payable to Toastmasters International. With more than 12,500 clubs paying dues online, we encourage you to pay early and avoid any system slowness due to heavy activity.

FROM THE BEGINNING . . . By: Rusty Sherman

“The Sunshine State Toastmasters District 47 was born as a result of curiosity. Curiosity may kill the cat, but in this case it catapulted members of the few Toastmasters Clubs in Florida to Action!” This quote was written in 1955 by Ira Callman, Provisional Governor of the newly organized District 47. The “curiosity” came from (the then) MSgt. Ira Callman and Sgt. William Kuck, USMC, who, in 1954, wondered why Florida did not have its own District. Attending their first International Convention in Washington, D.C., they met B.M. Wherrett from Orlando and a member of the first Toastmasters Club east of the Mississippi. When the three approached the Executive Secretary of International and posed the question, the response was “Why don’t you do something about it?” And they did! District 47 continued to grow in membership and the number of clubs to become the largest district in the world! By 2008, although the status of being the largest was definitely a proud distinction, logistically it was on the brink of living a nightmare. Hence, July 1, 2008, a line of demarcation limited District 47 geographically south of the middle of the state and The Bahamas. District 84 was born to service the northern part of Florida. From its inception until its division, District 47 earned President’s Distinguished District 9 times. What is even more astounding, since the division we have attained this distinction an additional 3 times, plus the following world rankings: 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011

DG Antionette Fox - President’s Distinguished District (96.20 points) #5 in the World DG Kristing Kihlberg- President’s Distinguished District (144.48 points) #2 in the World DG Rick Furbush - President’s Distinguished District (105.40 points) #6 in the World

in the District helped to achieve the ranking of Number 5 in the world. Fall Conference chair, David Clarke kept everything rolling in November as we met in Naples. Shawn Purvis became the district’s Humorous Speech Champion, while John Boyd became Evaluation winner. Jeanine Kinsey was named “Toastmaster of the Year”. International Director Pamela Christopher, DTM, shared the fun as 2001 World Champion Darren LaCroix rocked the district with his keynote speech and workshops. 2010: By May, our paid memberships had reached 10,424 with 226 clubs. We were “Celebrating our Nationalities” in Fort Lauderdale for our Spring Conference under the coordination of conference chair Myrna Brooks. We were fortunate to hear the “Missing Masala” by key note presenter, 2007 World Champion Speaker Vikas Jhingran. Our district competitions produced Jim Bussey, winner of the International Speech contest, and Damian Miller, Table Topic Champion. Communication & Leadership Award honoree was Susie Levan. We elected and installed District Officers: District Governor Rick Furbush, Lt. Gov. Education and Training Pamela D. Rolle and Lt. Gov. Marketing Matt Kinsey. In June, the District held a Speech-A-Thon in Fort Lauderdale. Beginning on Thursday, June 10, through Sunday, June 13th, 357 members spoke, non-stop. This very possibly may have set a speaking record! In August at the International Convention in Palm Desert, CA, District 47 was recognized Number 2 in the world!!!! How, you may ask? We were Number ONE in CC’s, Leadership Awards, and Distinguished Clubs; Number TWO in starting new clubs; Number THREE in AC’s; had 95% Distinguished Areas (67% of those were President’s Distinguished); AND 100% President’s Distinguished Divisions. These statistics earned us 144.48 points. This was the twelfth time District 47 attained this status of President’s Distinguished District.

With such amazing growth, what took fifty-three years to happen the first time has occurred once more. After only four years District 47 has grown beyond its boundaries and will split, this time, east and west! The “due date” for the birth of District 48 is July 1, 2012.

In addition to this most sought after honor, the announcement was made that District 47 had again exceeded the recommended district-size by almost 100%. We were the 7th largest in the world and still growing. The official split date was cited for July 1, 2012. The focal point for this decision is the smaller districts, both geographically and in member size, would benefit the members. Since Everglades National Park makes up a large geographical area in extreme south Florida, it was proposed that the split be made East/West.

2008: We were “Dancing with the Stars” at our Spring Conference in Jacksonville thanks to conference chair, Linda Deshauteurs. It was an outstanding honor to have International President, Chris Ford install our new District Officers: District Governor Antionette Fox, Lt. Gov., Education and Training Kristina Kihlberg, and Lt. Gov., Marketing Rick Furbush. Heather Ballmer had us howling as she became Table Topics Champion and Pim Love became International Speech Champion!

Conference chair Jeanine Kinsey kept it “Muy Caliente” at the Fall Conference in Miami as attendees were dazzled by 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking Craig Valentine, MBA. He gave us the “3 Top Secrets to a Better Life” and much more. From our slate of outstanding competitors, top honors went to Dawnna St. Louis, Humorous Speech Champion and Deanna Morrison chosen best Evaluator. Kathy Furbush was selected as “Toastmaster of the Year”!

At the Fall Conference in Deerfield Beach with the guidance of conference chair, Patty Martinez, kicked off our first “redesigned” District 47 conference. There was a warm welcome for 2000 World Champion of Public Speaking Ed Tate as the keynote speaker. Many of the district, division and area officers that year are attending this weekend’s event. One of these people is two-time “Toastmaster of the Year” (2003-04 and 2007-08) and current District 84 Governor, Jim Miller. Jim is also a member of the Palm Harbor club which is in District 47! One of the major accomplishments of that first conference was the attendance of 100 “first-timers”. Growth was happening again! To carry on the winning tradition of this unique district, Barry Rinehart took the top Evaluation prize, and Sandy Liebowitz had the audience laughing and placed first for his Humorous Speech.

2011: “Viva Las Vegas” had everyone rocking and rolling, thanks to conference chair Jane Strong to begin our last full calendar year as a united “47”. Our Communication and Leadership Award Honoree was Mayor Pam Iorio. Attendees of the Spring Conference in Tampa were held spell bound by keynote speaker, David Henderson, 2010 World Champion. John Boyd captured the title of Table Topics Champion and our International Speech Champion was Shawn Purvis.

2009: “That’s Amore” was in the air at our Spring conference in Tampa with the help of conference chair, Kathy Furbush. This conference featured key note speaker 2005 World Champion Lance Miller, DTM. Our Communication and Leadership Award honoree was General David H. Petraeus, Commander, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Airforce Base. After his win at the Fall Conference, Barry Rinehart pulled in two more District contest wins by placing first in both Table Topics and the International Speech contest. International Director, Sal Asad installed our new District Officers: District Governor Kristina Kihlberg, Lt. Gov. Education and Training Rick Furbush and Lt. Gov. Marketing Pamela D. Rolle. District 47 was presented with the President’s Distinguished District Award for 2008-2009 at the Toastmasters International Convention held in Mashantucke, Connecticut. The accomplishments of each member and club

At the International Conference in August, “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas” may be true in most cases, but NOT when your district is recognized for Exceptional Leadership and Devoted Service with the Excellence in Leadership Award for being a President’s Distinguished District for 3 Consecutive Years! Rick Furbush accepted this “three-peat” President’s Distinguished District award from International President Pat Johnson. In addition to that accolade, Pamela Rolle received the Excellence in Education & Training Award and Matt Kinsey, Excellence in Marketing. District Officers from those three years were given a special commemorative pin in appreciation for their contributions. Finally, with the guidance of conference chair Lynda Hammond, we were “All Aboard” last November. For some of us, it was our last district conference on the East Coast. West Palm Beach provided a wonderful venue for our celebration. Our key note speaker was LaShunda Rundles, who spoke of her “near death experience” after which many of us reflected on her presentation. District 47 contest winners were Sashane McDonald Evaluation and Terry Babb - Humorous Speech. At the awards luncheon, Ron Rice was awarded “Toastmaster

19

of the Year” and the first “Joseph Miller Class Act Award” was presented to Anthony “Tony” Longley. 2012: This weekend, as we enjoy the fun and games of “Circus Circus” look for our Spring Conference Chair Steve Zeris and thank him for all he is doing! June 30, 2012, we will not just end another chapter of District 47. We will complete another volume. From this point, a new, streamlined District 47 will continue to strive for its place in the sun. With the energy everyone expended to make the united District 47 among the best in the world, the new District 48 will hit the road running! Two things about Toastmasters will remain with both districts: 1. A Toastmaster strives to be the best he/she can be. 2. If it isn’t fun, it isn’t Toastmasters.

Happy Birthday- Boca Raton Advanced Toastmasters Club By Michelle Balaun It was a special day on April 11th when Lt. Governor Marketing-East, Hieu Huynh, DTM presented the members of Boca Raton Advanced Toastmasters Club 1888268 with their new banner. It was the first birthday of the club as well – one year since being officially chartered by Toastmasters International. The mission of Boca Raton Advanced Club is to challenge members to continue advancing their speaking and leadership skills. All members belong to other Toastmaster Clubs; this shows their commitment to the Toastmasters program. Boca Raton Advanced has planned some fun events such as the visit of LaShunda Rundles who spoke at the club before the Fall Conference. President Nina Fernandez has plans for a special Presidents’ meeting; all club presidents in the Division will be invited to attend. Several of the members are contest winners and will go on to compete in upcoming events. This group can really challenge you to be a better speaker, evaluator or table topics master! All are welcome to join! The club meets the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of every month, 6pm at NCCI (National Council on Compensation Insurance). Check out the link for more info!
