Message from District Governor—Matt Kinsey, DTM building throughout the District. The main focus is our International President John Lau’s 1+1 Campaign. Here’s what our President has to say about the program!

Greetings members of District 47! It’s hard to believe that we are more than halfway into this Toastmasters year. We’ve had a lot of successes along with some challenges so far, but District 47 is so strong because we always rise to meet the challenges along with celebrating our successes. Our biggest challenge right now is membership. Many of our clubs are down membership this year. We’ve heard many reasons for this, many of which are centered around economics. Toastmasters is still one of the best values for your money of any personal development program in the world. There are also many people who can afford Toastmasters who don’t even know that it exists. We are working on membership

“The 1+1 campaign is a membershipbuilding program designed to help grow and strengthen our great organization. Beginning December 1, when you refer a friend who becomes a Toastmasters member, you can fill out the 1+1 form so that your efforts can be recognized. New, dual and reinstated members count for credit; transfer and charter members do not.” See the video in his message. The 1+1 membership-building campaign is valid December 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Members: Members who have referred a friend that joins a Toastmasters club will receive a 1+1 decal and a personalized letter from Executive Director, Daniel Rex and me. This letter will be presented to members by club presidents. Also, each month, the referring member's name will be listed on the 1+1 web page wall. To reward members' efforts, all names will be included in a monthly drawing to win an exclusive 1+1 Toastmas-

ters branded T-shirt. Clubs: The top 20 clubs that gain the highest number of new members through the 1+1 campaign by June 30, 2013, will receive a $250 store credit. World Headquarters will keep track of club efforts and announce the winners on July 22, 2013. Districts: The top five districts that gain the highest number of new members through the 1+1 campaign by June 30, 2013, will receive a $500 store credit. World Headquarters will keep track of district efforts and announce the winners on July 22, 2013. I encourage you to take advantage of the 1+1 program. We will be listing all 1+1 members in upcoming issues of the Sunshiner. We are also working on some District level awards for the 1+1 program. Stay tuned for more details. I look forward to seeing each of you at our upcoming Spring Conference, May 3-5 in Fort Lauderdale. Thank you, Matt Kinsey, DTM Toastmasters District 47 Governor 2012-2013

John Lau, DTM— Toastmasters International President Today, Toastmasters International's membership is more than a quarter of a million strong, but together we can grow and cultivate the next generation of leaders and communicators. Watch John's 1+1 Video! John Lau, DTM International President

“Training Gets Advanced”...by Hieu Huynh, DTM x 3 Do you like having new and exciting experiences? This year, we had a new and exciting experience at our Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) events. Every six months, our District holds these leadership events to train our club officers. If you have been a member for a long time and have been an officer many times, you may have become accustomed to the training programs at our TLIs. This year, for the first time in District 47, we provided “Advanced” sessions for continuing club officers. Since many club officers were trained in their position six months previously in June or July, these “Advanced” sessions were meant to supplement the information from the initial training and also to be used to share the successes and lessons from the first six months (or more for our longer-termed officers). The Advanced sessions were incorporated into the TLIs in Miramar, Homestead, and Boca Raton. We had two parts of the Advanced sessions: Panel Discussions and Group Discussions. For the Panel Discussions, we brought in experienced leaders in our clubs and our District to answer your questions on Toastmasters. Questions ranged from “What was the biggest lesson you have learned in your leadership position?” to “What was your favorite conference?” For the Group Discussions, we had officers sit at tables in groups of five to seven and discuss different topics in Toastmasters. The topics were Membership Drives, Community Outreach, Corporate Outreach, Educational Program, and Speech Contests. Some of the discussions were so engaging that they kept on going after the time was called (I gave them extra time to continue them)! I believe these Continuing Officer Sessions were a huge success! Based on your feedback, we plan on keeping them for future TLIs.

Let Me Introduce You….excerpt from Better Speaker Series -Used with advance written permission from Toastmasters International for the sole purpose of promoting Toastmasters. INTRODUCTION Not everyone is comfortable with the concept of a speech introduction. An inaccurate or unexpected introduction can fluster even the most prepared speaker. While speech introductions can be challenging to organize and present, they are also a very necessary part of our Toastmasters meetings. THE IMPORTANCE OF AN INTRODUCTION A well-crafted introduction enhances a presentation by providing the following: Smooth transition – When members of your club or audience get up to speak, they are about to take on a new role. An introduction defines that role and prepares the audience for a shift from previous activities by refocusing their interest. Proper mindset – Audience members are more likely to appreciate a speech if they are given some background information about the speaker and the topic to be discussed. A skillful introduction can do this as well as set a desired mood or tone. Speaker authority – A good introduction helps establish the speaker’s expertise or back-ground in the subject. If the topic is education, for example, the introduction should inform us if the speaker has three school-aged children or is a member of the local school board. GENERAL ESSENTIALS Since a speech introduction must be brief, it should be exceptionally well planned. If you have been assigned to present an introduction, your primary consideration is to inform the audience of three essential points: Speaker’s name – Always say the speaker’s name distinctly and clearly, especially at the very end of the introduction. If the name has a tricky pronunciation, confirm the correct way, and then write it out phonetically for yourself. Speech topic – Relate the speaker’s background and credentials to the speech topic. Then tell how the topic will benefit the audience. Ask yourself why this subject is appropriate for this particular audience. Speech title – The speech’s title is typically mentioned at the end of the introduction. Like the speaker’s name, it needs to be given special emphasis. TOASTMASTERS ESSENTIALS If you are introducing a fellow Toastmaster at a club meeting, your introduction should also include three crucial elements: Speech assignment – Tell the audience if the speaker is speaking from the Competent Communication manual or from one of the manuals in the Advanced Communication Series. Announce the assignment number and the title of that assignment

The True Wealth of Toastmasters...by York Somerville Toastmasters, so many interesting folks join this great Maybe they just aced that first organization, for so many different reasons! big job interview, what If? This story really started in October 2003. Do you have about 60 hours to DTM Sanford Sabel asked me if I would present at his lend? This mentoring is a big wife's school, for the 'Great American Teach-In? deal and you will be amazed that giving your time FREE It was that day and the 16 year old boy in the front may be the best, most imrow (the class clown) flashed back to me! It was then portant part of being a Toastafter being a Toastmaster a whole 3 months, I realmaster. ized why I became a Toastmaster. It could even become a big part of your life. Grab it; When you are thrown out of school in the 9th grade you will become a better person! and sixteen, it's real cool, then! So there I am no job, York Somerville ATG, presenter of ten Youth Leadership Programs no education and no money, hangin’ out, cool huh? It's when you realize (that day, that boy) this Toastmaster thing is real important! To take your message to these young adults “don't quit school” is a real big deal. It will change your life.

Our Traveling Toastmasters!

I know I am rambling here, but I'm a speaker, not a writer, ha! ha! In Toastmasters, you have the ability to change lives, or at least influence these young skulls full of mush. Just imagine at age ten, overcoming the fear of public speaking, learning how to prepare for job interviews. Knowing you can present before your class or even an auditorium full of peers. Your whole world changes in just 8 weeks while presenting this Toastmaster Youth Leadership Program. What if it was your child being introduced to the world of Toastmasters? What if? What if you committed to giving up the approximate 60 hours of your life to change other lives, what if? What if you understood that learning to speak in public is a real big deal, what if? What if at age 10 you learned this speaking thing is just not that hard, what if? What if one of your students became the CEO of a major corporation, a great speaker or even President, Would you be proud?

Lessons Learned From My Silent Auction

In

keeping with Toastmasters, fundraising was a way for me to learn and to lead. I hosted a Silent Auction to cover the costs of our Area 30 Table Topics and International contests. The Silent Auction provided an opportunity to promote local businesses and fellow Toastmasters. This made it a win-win experience for everyone involved, including the members of our area. Many members brought food to share for the potluck dinner and participated in the raffle during the contest. Thank you to all of our donors. Some of the lessons learned 1. Have a clear vision and set details

by Ruth Beck

“Next” leads me to thank those who inspired me and held me accountable to keep going. 4. Promotions Consider the time involvement for active promotions and the feasibility to respond to every donor and bid. Encourage early donations. Be certain that bidders know the end of the auction and be clear about who won. An online auction company might have been useful to reach more prospective donors and better serve the bidders by providing information in “real time”. Consider including a bio and photo of each donor. The value of the donated item or service may have raised the price of the bid.

Set clear details about when and how the auction will be handled. I took questions from people I mentioned the auction to before I decided. After I set a two-week timeframe for the actual auction, I wrote a flyer of the Rules of the Auction and the List of Donors and Donated Items.

5. Keep orderly notes and documents

If I had set the details early in the process of requesting donations, I might have had a stronger vision and might have contacted more businesses, members, and acquaintances.

●Shopper and bid per shopper

2. “Some will, some won’t, so what, next”

●Money received

Be true to a vision and clearly communicate the purpose and request with courtesy. “So what” means to not take the negative or apathetic responses personally. The request is best made if tailored to the needs of the business or person being given the opportunity to donate. It is not a personal reflection if the presenter is not given a positive response.

Include out of town shoppers and clearly state that anything being mailed or shipped will incur an additional fee for postage. We had out of town winners.

3.Dress for success and have written information about the event. Provide business cards or contact information. Toastmasters International has branding stationery on the toastmasters.org website. Always thank everyone you approach, even if just to thank them for their time and for listening. Say thank you even if you do not feel thankful.

6.Socialize

Inform the business representative or person you are contacting of how you will promote them. Follow through. Send the donors a thank you note. If you promote them in writing, send them a copy. You may invite them to the event. The donation is funding.

It is important to keep a spreadsheet or Word document list with the following items: ●Donors ●Donated Items

●Plan for delivering items to shopper and receiving funds from shopper

It helps to have a bank account dedicated to the auction so the money doesn’t get mixed with other money. This worked well for me and had the approval of my Area Council. This helps with event financial documents required by the district.

Each of the deliveries became social times. I met one winning shopper at his office, one donor at a restaurant, and two winning shoppers at restaurants. My husband helped me with this project. An alternative would be to build a team of Toastmasters. As in all things in Toastmasters, try new activities in order to enhance communication and leadership skills and have fun. The Sunshiner My Success Story ...by LaKeesha Morris, CC, CL

Have you ever asked yourself “what have I done for me lately”? This was my state of mind the day I visited the Florida City Speedway Speakers Club. The members captured me at “hello” and sealed the deal with Table Topics. About a year after joining, I found myself transitioning from being an employee who is able to work behind the scenes to starting my own business. Toastmasters has helped me improve my impromptu speaking skills, develop effective presentations and gain confidence as a leader.

The Toastmasters Magazine has been invaluable. I have even conducted a phone interview with the May 2011 issue; Success Secrets for Telephone Interviews by Susan Berkley, pg. 13 sitting in front of me! The tools provided by Toastmasters remain relevant and practical. This brings me to my most recent success story.

research your audience, prepare to answer common questions, and avoid the “ums and ahs”. By the end of our Q&A session, I began to receive greater eye contact, head nods and smiles from the committee members. Finally, it was time for the motion to approve and roll call for the vote. The resolution was unanimously approved!

One of my goals this year was to secure one new premium client by March 31. The contract required a three part interviewing process ranging from one -on-one to committee review. Each time, I used my Toastmasters skills;

Joining Toastmasters is one of the best things that I have done for myself. It is an investment that yields great return and the people that I have LaKeesha Morris, CC,CL met along the way have left a lasting impression President, Speedway Speakers on my life. ●

Your Acre of Diamonds In Toastmasters

by Samuel N. Kram

There is an Ancient Indian legend of the man who traveled the world to find that which he sought the most, yet had it in his own backyard, and did not know it. All he had to do was know it was there, reach down and pick it up! Toastmasters is your acre of diamonds. You can travel the world and you will not find another opportunity where you can learn and develop your skills in the art of communication through public speaking as you have here in Toastmasters,…with .. special techniques that are specifically designed to help you create, prepare, present and deliver a speech that is dynamic, captivating and memorable, as these are the essentials for an effective speech What are these special techniques?. Techniques, such as the proper use of body language, hand gestures, facial expression, voice modulation, voice inflection, pitch, pace, tone, speed and rhythm. These are the essentials of an effective speech…and let us not forget, the moment of silence,…THE PAUSE,…the “enchanting” essential pause that not only helps captivate your audience, but draws them to you as they wait in suspense and in anticipation for those next few words… those next few “precious gems” emanating from your lips. You’ve all heard the expression…”The pen (the written word) is mightier than the sword”…The sword can terrify the human heart, but the written word can motivate the human mind. However, the fact is that the spoken word is more potent and prodigious than the written word. Though the written word can motivate the human mind…it is the SPOKEN word that can stir the human soul. It is the SPOKEN word that can arouse the human spirit…and one who possesses the skills of rhetorical eloquence has the world at his fingertips. We have witnessed this throughout the ages, …centuries…..history. As we know there were those who used these skills for good and there were others who used their skills for evil. To motivate, as opposed to manipulate,… to inspire, as opposed to incite and to educate, inform and enlighten, as opposed to deceive, betray and delude. You, as Toastmasters have the capacity to develop these skills to MOTIVATE, ….to INSPIRE and to EDUCATE. Reach down! Pick up that diamond & hold it up to the sunlight…& DON’T LET GO! Samuel N. Kram

Boost Your Speech with Body Language –used with advance permission from Toastmasters International for the sole purpose of promoting Toastmasters.

Using effective nonverbal communication is crucial to delivering an engaging speech. Your body language is part of your presentation; it helps maintain the interest of the audience. These tips will help: 

Work those facial muscles. Your facial expressions reinforce the emotional tone of your speech. Frown to show disappointment, raise

your eyebrows to demonstrate surprise and smile broadly to express enthusiasm. 

Make gestures consistent with words. Make your gestures match what you are saying –for example, if you are speaking about a bird you saw in the sky, point your arm upward in that direction.

Move with purpose. Move around on stage rather than stand stiffly in one spot. But when you move, do so for a reason. For example, walk to the other side of the stage as you transition to a new topic, or move toward the audience as you ask a question.

Fifty Years of Early Bird Toastmasters

E

by Jerry Newcombe

arly Bird Toastmasters will celebrate 50 years of meetings this month. Since 1963, this Ft. Lauderdale based club has seen members and visitors come and go, speak and grow. Our members are a lively group of people---diverse by age, career, and cultural background.

The club meets Thursday morning at 7 AM at Denny’s at Powerline and Oakland Park. Since I’ve been attending from 1988, it has always met there, except for a brief stint at Peter Pan Diner after one of the hurricanes. Stockbroker Charles Schmidt, who now lives in West Palm Beach, was active in EarlyBird Toastmasters from 1963 until 1980 and, 1986-1990. He says, “I joined the club when I was 23, and I’m 72 years old now. For me, Toastmasters helped me more in my professional life than any formal education. More than college, more than high school, more than anything.” Chuck added while he is not 100% sure of this, he vaguely recalls that EarlyBird was actually visited once by the late Ralph Smedley. Mr. Smedley, of course, was the founder of Toastmasters International, in the 1920s. EarlyBird Toastmasters began meetings in the Ana Capri Hotel on Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale. From there it moved It to a Denny’s on Federal Highway, and then to Galt Ocean Mile Hotel. Eventually, in the 1980s, EarlyBird settled at its current location. The founder of the club was Winslow Chesley, who was in the hotel business. Miles Banks,DTM attended about a dozen meetings of the club in the 1970s and 1980s. He would have attended more, but the early time interfered with his work schedule. He said of the meetings: “It was always well attended, even though it was so early. Maybe because you had a lot of go-getters. It was always a lot of fun.” Virginia Heddinger, a veritable institution in Toastmasters in South Florida, was a member. This former school teacher provided a terrific example of protocol. Hard to believe, at one point Toastmasters was not integrated, gender-wise. There were Toastmasters for men and Toastmistresses for women. Virginia was determined to break down the barrier. She started the old Venetian Club in Ft. Lauderdale. As I recall, under her leadership, Venetian actually grew to be the #1 club in the world. EarlyBird never achieved that high status, but we have received many distinguished awards over 50 years. One of our notable DTM’s was the late Neil MacLaren, a member of EarlyBird since 1973. He used to always say in his weekly introduction, “I teach music for a living---in case any IRS agents happen to be here.” Our current active DTM is Kip Barkley. A member since 1990, Kip has served in every role imaginable and is our resident techie and inspiration. Saturday February 23rd, we celebrate and honor our club. There will be a drop-in session from 5-7PM and a party program from 7-11PM. We gather at the Admiralty Towers, 750 N Ocean Blvd, Pompano Beach, FL in the Community Room. There will be fun, remembrances and opportunities to reconnect with old friends. For more information about our celebration visit : http://www.earlybirdtm.com/EarlyBirdToastmastersGala.pdf

THINKING OFF THE FEET Let us admit it. We have all had moments where we have drawn a blank to a Table Topics question. The secret to tackling a Table Topics question lies in the 3 R's: 1. Repeat the question: We have all seen this tactic being performed - from politicians to celebrities. This is a great way of buying time to organize your thoughts. While the wheels in your brain are turning, this simple act portrays that you have acknowledged the question and

You will be rewarded a hundred times the effort you put into Toastmasters, and every aspect of your life will benefit. Mine did. Phyllis Sidersky,ACG,CL Area 43 Governor 2012-2013

appreciate it.

3. Refer to other Table Topics:

2. Reach in to your repertoire of experience: Where better to get content for a good speech than from the incredible source that is your life! Even if you are clueless about the topic asked, you can always twist or shift the topic to accommodate an experience that appears relatable to the question.

When done tastefully, you can come across as someone with an incredible ability to connect different topics together. This also helps you hone your listening skills, which we know, is the first step to becoming a great speaker. Go ahead and give the 3R's a try and you may never have to dodge eye contact with the Table Topics master again.

NEWS FROM TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL February 2013 Board Meeting The Board of Directors will meet February 22-23 in Southern California. The Board held its first in-person meeting after the International Convention in August. Since that time, the Board's committees have met virtually, focusing on topics that support the 2010 Strategic Plan. These virtual meetings have saved time and travel expenses. This year's February Board meeting schedule has been reduced to two days. After the meeting, results of the discussions will be shared in writing on February 25 on the Toastmasters International website rather than at a public board briefing or through streaming video, as was done in the past.

How To Win the One Thing Clubs Want …Members! Ever wanted to win at a casino? Our club can show you how to win the one thing most clubs want – members. Though not a corporate club, our Seminole Casino Hollywood Toastmasters Club was founded to add benefit to the local Hollywood casino’s over 750 plus round the clock employees. Only a few of them joined the club over the last few years citing work schedule conflicts and difficulty preparing speeches as their reason for their short stay.

Taking Flight...2013 Spring Conference–

Marilyn Hu

Dear Fellow Toastmasters, We have just three more months before taking flight for the 2013 Spring Conference! This year the Spring Conference will be held the first weekend in May (May 3-5 2013) – and boy have we got another great conference in store for you! If you have attended of District 47’s former conferences then you know what I am talking about. I attended my first District Conference when I was serving as an Area Governor in 2007-2008. I met so many wonderful Toastmasters from all over South Florida. One of the most impressive events that Saturday night was the “Processional” in which every dignitary lined up and then purposefully filed into the room as his or her name was announced. That moment was almost as exciting as when I approached the altar at my own wedding (ha ha). Of course, the workshops and hospitality were all well-organized and incredibly educational; It was an unforgettable weekend. After that processional, I attended many of the workshops all of which I found truly beneficial to my development as a Toastmaster and ultimate path to my DTM. This year it is my honor and privilege to serve you as your Conference Chair for this upcoming Spring Conference. The theme of this Spring Conference is "Taking Flight". Our keynote speaker is, Dana LaMon, a former Toastmasters World Champion, who is now a Professional Speaker since 1991. Dana in fact has several workshops planned to motivate and inspire you toward “leading a meaningful life”. In addition, all of District 47’s outstanding District Leaders which includes the Trio, the Division Governors, Area Governors and their teams, are working diligently to carry out the conference’s planning and organization in order to make sure that you have the most memorable experience possible!. In fact, if you want to be part of the planning team, we welcome (and still need!) all and all volunteers with your varied talents. One of the key things we currently seek is WORKSHOP PRESENTERS. If you are able to do a workshop on a standard Toastmasters Topic (e.g. evaluations, table topics, humor, developing speech topics, etc.) then please contact me as early as possible so that we can schedule you in! You can contact me at: mhu@toastmastersd47.org …or Division I Governor, Andrew Albury at aalbury@toastmastersd47.org

Again, there are also many other roles for volunteers apart from the workshops, so I certainly look forward to hearing from you! Additionally, and as is customary, our District Contest Finals for Table Topics will be held Friday night with the International Speech contest to follow on Saturday night. Early Spring Conference registration is available only until March 10, 2013 so please take advantage of the opportunity and register as early as possible. Early registration the cost is only $115 versus $135 after March 10th. Please note: there will be no walk-in registrations. Again, we have about 100 days before taking off....so don't miss the flight!

Marilyn Hu, DTM 2013 Spring Conference Chair

John Schneyer, DTM

John Schneyer, DTM , a member of Boca Raton TM and WCR Toastmasters clubs contributes his Toastmasters training and experience to his success in being named an ASQ-Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence. (ASQCMQ/OE). “ASQ provides certification as a way to provide formal recognition to professionals, who have demonstrated an understanding of, and a commitment to, quality techniques and practices in their job and career,” explains Jim Rooney, ASQ chair. “This is a great accomplishment and, although not a formal registration or licensure, it represents a high level of peer recognition.” In order to sit for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence examination, an individual must have ten years of work experience related to the Body of Knowledge. The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence is a professional who leads and champions process-improvement initiatives - everywhere from small businesses to multinational corporations - that can have regional or global focus in a variety of service and industrial settings. The examination is 4 hours in duration and part of the exam was similar to Table Topics only in writing. John selected 2 of 3 topics (unknown prior to examination) and told how he would deal with the situations posed. The exam also included 160 multiple choice questions. John in a brief telephone interview with The Sunshiner, gave credit to his Toastmasters experiences as Area Governor, Outstanding Toastmaster and completion of 3 High Performance projects for his confidence and success in performing well in the examination. Since 1968, when the first ASQ certification examination was given, more than 170,000 individuals have taken the path to reaching their goal of becoming ASQ-Certified in their field or profession, including many of who have attained more than one designation. ASQ is a global community of people dedicated to quality who share the ideas and tools that make our world work better. With millions of individual and organizational members of the community in 150 countries, ASQ has the reputation and reach to bring together the diverse quality champions who are transforming the world’s corporations, organizations, and communities to meet tomorrow’s critical challenges. ASQ is headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., with national service centers in China, India, and Mexico. Learn more about ASQ’s members, mission, technologies, and training at www.asq.org.
