Toastmasters from the Treasure Coast to The Bahamas enjoyed a weekend of education, networking and celebration – and just plain fun! – at the 2017 Spring Conference in Miami. From the Story Slam organized Friday night by Phyllis May, DTM, to the workshops, speech contests, DTM Walk and several keynote presentations by 2000 World Champion of Public Speaking Ed Tate, the conference kept its promise to “Knock Your Socks Off!”

June Contributors Richard Erschik, ACB, CL (“It’s a Small Toastmasters World”), has been a Toastmaster for more than four years. He says, “While most everyone else is looking out the windshield at their career, I’m looking out the rear-view mirror at mine, wishing I’d been introduced to Toastmasters decades ago.” Barbara Strasdas, DTM (“From Small Pebbles, a Great Wave”), is director of Division D. She is a member of three Toastmasters clubs and has served in many leadership roles, including District 47 contest advisor, audit chairperson and area governor (2007-09). Strasdas was twice named Outstanding Toastmaster in Division D (2009 and 2014).

Veon Watson (“Channeling Our Competitive Spirit”), has been a member of Toastmasters for more than two years. She is a digital analyst with PricewaterhouseCoopers Experience Center in Hallandale Beach, Florida, and serves as vice president public relations for her club, PwC Digital Toastmasters. John Schneyer, DTM, district lead photographer, is a member of Boca Raton Toastmasters and WCR Palm Beaches Noon Toastmasters. Since 2009, he has learned from amazing people, made wonderful friends and received more hugs and kisses than he could have imagined. He has failed, succeeded and grown through Toastmasters.

Leadership Messages: From the Trio District Director

After a Year of Growth, the Future Is Bright Dear Toastmasters Family and Friends! My birthday was a few days ago and it sent me into a time of reflection, you know, the way life’s milestones tend to often pop you off on a head trip to many destinations. I visited places such as the Where have I been? Museum and had fun exploring the Where am I going? Fantasy Futurama Thrill Park. I lingered a long while on Where am I now? Island. I’m back now and couldn’t wait to get in touch with you through the The Sunshiner because while I was on my trip of past, present and future I thought about you and our Toastmasters District 47! District 47 has a long and fruitful history since 1955. Since then we’ve produced many strong communicators and leaders. We grew so popular that we had to split twice to where we are today. The last split, in 2012, was hard on us and our sister District, 48. We suffered the loss of many clubs and members. Our finances in D47 were dwindling and it became apparent that the district was in trouble. District leaders were financially supporting the district and that was unfair and not a wise business practice. This year we focused on becoming financially stable. Many sacrifices were made by DEC members and others in the district. We instituted many changes in the ways the district Lynda Hammond, DTM operated — all ethical, of course, but with fewer resources, no longer sustainable. I am pleased to announce that we have made that goal and will be able to leave the district in sound financial shape. No one should have to personally pay for district business any longer. Throughout all of the hard work stabilizing the district you, our members, kept doing what Toastmasters do best. You applied yourselves to the educational programs Toastmasters offers to grow personally and professionally. You stretched yourselves and helped your clubs. District 47 members do not break when faced with challenge; we boldly move forward and grow and we do it together! The future of our wonderful District 47 is very bright! Your upcoming Trio will work together to best serve us all. DTMs Chim Francisco as district director, Lydia Harris as program quality director and Leonardo Burrows as club growth director are all amazing Toastmasters. Please support them in keeping District 47 strong! Personally, I thank you all for supporting me these past two years while I served on the Trio. It has been a tremendously valuable experience and an honor greater than I can ever adequately articulate, at least not without getting all emotional (not very pretty). I come from a background of diversity and I am very much at home in District 47. I feel we are the lucky ones in the two splits during this century; we are still made up of two nations! Although The Bahamas really feels more like our 51st state, we are two countries who come together as one through Toastmasters. This is such a divine gift! The more different we think we are, through Toastmasters, we find the more alike we truly are! Thank you to this year’s Trio with Chim Francisco and Mike Thorn. Their dedication and love for the members of District 47 is deep and clear. Thank you to our District Executive Council (DEC) members for all of your dedication and service. We will boast and brag about you at our Hall of Fame in the fall. Just one more thing, good people…this term is not over until July 1st at 3 AM! Let’s Beat the Clock and get more members! Leadership Messages: From the Trio Club Growth Director

Our Goal Is Simple: To Simply Be the Best Winston Churchill, the prime minister of Great Britain during World War II, provided many notable quotes, but two are particularly relevant as we near the end of our Toastmasters year and we reflect on our accomplishments and plan for the future. As he stated, it is important to remember that “the price of greatness is responsibility.” Or, to use a more common saying, “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” We have worked hard this year to be one of the premier districts within Toastmasters on a regional, national and global basis, but we need to remember that we are still comprised of, and owe our allegiance to, our individual members. They are the source of our strength, and we are obligated to support them in all we do at all times. Simply put, we need to be accountable for our actions. The second quotation readily applies to our track record for not just this occasion, but for our entire year as leaders at all levels of the district. As Churchill stated, “My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.” We have shown this to be our de facto mantra through our mutual goals, our Michael Thorn, DTM shared actions and our accomplishments. More importantly, we have set our overall direction to be one of sustained greatness. We will never be satisfied with anything less than being the standard bearer of the four core values of Toastmasters: Integrity – Respect – Service – Excellence. We have worked hard to establish and gain recognition as being among the best … to provide the standards for others to emulate. Let us not forget our successes, but let us also take the time to recognize and enjoy them. Be proud and finish strong!!! And on that note . . . I thought you might find the following observations and comments from a member of the staff at World Headquarters of interest. I would, of course, like to take sole credit for them, but they really reflect the joint efforts of all of us working together on club growth initiatives and activities. Specifically, it has been observed that: •

In comparison to all of the districts in North America, District 47 is . . .  in the top 15% for club growth  in the top 10% for clubs in good standing

In comparison to all of the districts globally, District 47 is . . .  in the top 20% for club growth  in the top 20% for clubs in good standing.

(As an aside, we are the leaders in both categories for our Region.) Further, it was noted that WHQ TI really likes the way we have set up our district and is currently updating many of its existing programs to reflect ours. To summarize: “…your district is far ahead of the engagement curve, and we want to try and get districts to be more like you. Congratulations, New VPPR! Let’s Begin Are you one of the lucky Toastmasters who's just been (or is about to be) elected vice president public relations (VPPR) for your club? Congratulations! I hope you've patted yourself on the back for taking this opportunity to tell the world about your club and all the wonderful things it can do for them – not to mention the chance to share the good news within the club itself. I hope you've allowed yourself to drink in the applause and admiration of your fellow club members, for putting yourself forward to do this important job. Now what? There are many resources to start with. Here’s where to find them: Toastmasters International Visit the Public Relations section of the Toastmasters International website, where you'll find everything from "how to" guides to ready-made templates for creating your own publicity materials. Visit the Logos, Images and Templates page, to learn how to properly represent the Toastmasters brand. One exciting resource is the Electronic Media Kit, a comprehensive guide that you can send out to local media with story pitches. You don't have to send the whole media kit – it's 16 pages – but using some pieces (the Fact Sheet, for instance) is invaluable. Kate McClare, ACS, ALB

District 47 The district website has many resources, not the least of which is the district calendar. Be sure to subscribe to the district email lists to get the latest news. And your subscription includes The Sunshiner – how can you beat that? The most important news to follow, of course, is when registration opens for the Toastmasters Leadership Institute, an important training event for all club officers. Remember, at least four officers must attend formal training for your club to satisy the training goal of the Distinguished Club Program. Your Club Talk to your club president about including publicity on the agenda of your first board meeting of the year. Publicity can be as simple as submitting short calendar announcements about your meetings. These are considered news, by the way, so they're free – and probably more effective than a paid ad. Whatever your plan, get the board talking about it. The more people you involve, the more ideas you'll get (and the less chance you'll have to do the whole job yourself). Does the club want to get local media to write stories about your club? Come up with some interesting story ideas to pitch. Think ahead to club events that locla media might be interested in writing about, such as club contests or open houses. Do you want to publish a club newsletter? Yourself You are full of the ideas and skills you need to make the VPPR role a success. I know this without even knowing you, because if you didn't have what it takes you wouldn't have stepped up. Take this opportunity to learn and grow, and you’ll be amazed at what develops! How to Pass the Treasurer Baton To the outgoing treasurers, I am sorry to tell you that your reign of managing the money is almost over. I know — rats, right? I hope you enjoyed your year and can look back with fondness over this Executive Board position. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE INCOMING TREASURERS! This role is critical to the vitality of your club. YOU are the club’s accountant, YOU manage the bank accounts, YOU collect membership dues and remit to World Headquarters and YOU make sure all the club bills are paid on time. As a good leader, it is important to ensure your successor is properly prepared to hit the ground running. What does that entail, you ask?

It is really very simple. The outgoing treasurer should review the role with the incoming treasurer. Review the records and most recent quarterly report. Explain your accounting process and how you are responsible for keeping accurate records. What else should you review? Budgeting! Budgeting, oh and did I mention BUDGETING???? Remember, the budget should be approved by the Executive Board in July. By going through each line of the budget, the new treasurer will understand where the money comes from and what expenditures are authorized. This is a critical aspect of the treasurer job. After July 1, as soon as possible, go to your bank and sign new signature cards. Be sure to get a debit card in your name. Traditionally, the president and treasurer are signers on the account and have a debit card. Lastly, in preparation for this role, attend the treasurer session in a Toastmasters Leadership Institute. You will receive lots of great tips on how to make your year run smooth as silk. You are now ready to take on the coveted treasurer position. Everyone will be in awe of you — after all, you control the money. Everyone will want to be you! Really! In closing, here are some key points that can make your year run smoothly: • • •

Present a financial report at the club meetings, traditionally quarterly, or as requested. Maintain a handle on the finances Only disburse funds that have been approved via the budget

Division D Rich Otten, DTM Hobe Sound Toasters Rich Otten exemplifies a life of service. He is a 20year Toastmaster. When asked eight years ago by a prisoner to start a Gavel Club in a nearby prison, he immediately responded. Since then he has founded five prison clubs and has mentored others to follow his example. Rich is always the first to offer assistance in whatever is needed for any Toastmaster event, club, area or division. This award is long overdue for such a dedicated and serving Toastmaster.

From Small Pebbles, a Great Wave Division D Diector Barbara Strasdas, DTM, gave an inspiring invocation at a recent meeting of the District Executive Council. We are very pleased to share it with you: Good morning, Distinguished Dignitaries! A few years ago an opportunity and a gift was given to me — of course I did not know that at the time. In my role as the company controller, I handle all the general liability insurance claims. One of our customers called, as damage to his carpeting was caused as a result of service at his home. The insurance company was slow to complete the claim. So I put some pressure on the adjuster and explained that the customer was happy to replace the carpet with one tsaving the insurance company four-fifths of the real value of the damaged carpet . Mr. Customer was very kind and happy when the claim was settled and even more appreciative when I sent him a handwritten thank you note. He calls me his buddy! I soon found out that Mr. Customer is a philanthropist and an author. He is described as a self-made man whose example of leadership and commitment to values has impacted both the profit and nonprofit world. Mr. Customer’s fundamental belief is that a life without meaning, purpose and commitment isn’t a life at all. At times, we may ask ourselves why we give of our time on Saturdays or in the evenings, guiding our Toastmaster members, encouraging them, mentoring them and enlightening them, when we could have instead Barbara Strasdas, DTM slept later, enjoyed that cup of coffee or done nothing. Why are you here today? Fellow Toastmasters – you are here today because your example is the essence of commitment and leadership and knowledge that a single individual has the power to change the world. Thank you for your service in your Toastmaster role. Thank you for giving of your time. As the Dali Lama said, “Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” You are the pebbles! Have a wonderful day!

Volunteer Work Brings a Sweet Reward

Throughout the year, NextEra works together with Donna Beirnes with the Chevy Silverado she won. the communities it serves to make them even better places to work and raise families. It encourages its employees to get involved and give back through volunteering. In 2016, Beirnes and hundreds of NextEra employees logged more than 85,000 volunteer hours. Employees who logged more than 50 volunteer hours in 2016 became eligible for a drawing to win the truck. Beirnes was the winner! As part of her recognition, she and her family attended the Daytona 500. Beirnes logged almost 400 volunteer hours in 2016, which resulted in her becoming a member of NextEra Energy's CEO Volunteer Circle.

Under her leadership in 2015 as club president of High Voltage Voices, D41 was recognized as a President's Distinguished Area.

It’s a Small Toastmasters World Rewind the clock to 1976; Richard Erschik is general manager of a Chicago-based national organization that supplies the awards industry with trophy components such as threaded rods, marble, figurines, exotic wood and decorative metal.

Fast forward 41 years later. Erschik, semi-retired in South Florida and immediate past president of Homestead Toastmasters, is attending a Toastmasters Leadership Instiutute workshop.There he meets Sandy Liebowitz from the Miami Advanced Toastmasters club. Liebowitz tells Erschik, “I’m in the awards industry,” to which Richard replies, “Oh… have you ever heard of XYZ Company?” Sandy says, “Yes, they are one of my suppliers.” Turns out, Liebowitz was buying from Erschik’s company before and during the time Erschik was general manager, but they didn’t even know each other until years later at a Toastmasters event. “I think there’s a speech in there someplace,” Erschik says.

Channeling Our Competitive Spirit By Veon Watson Vice President Public Relations, PwC Digital Toastmasters We are naturally competitive creatures. Competition is deeply rooted in our culture. A social scientist recently wrote, “Competition is one of the most basic functions of man and remains a powerful instinctual drive in human nature. We compete against each other, against ourselves, and as groups against other groups.” It appears there isn’t a possibility of evading this natural instinct. I kept this interesting truth in mind while brainstorming public relations strategies for my club. As VPPR, it is important to promote your Toastmasters club to the public, to publicize achievements and drive membership. It is a role that is pivotal to the success of the club membership initiatives and growth. In the air of competition, I developed two contests to stimulate awareness, improve attendance and drive participation. The Bring a Buddy Challenge encourages members to bring a friend to each meeting; each member receives one point per guest. The member who brings the most guests within the contest period wins a prize. Toast to Attendance encourages members to sign up for roles and speeches in each meeting. Attending or completing a role earns one entry each while completing a speech earns two. Each contest runs for a six-month period, providing members with enough time to rack up entries. Incentives are a critical layer in these initiatives. If you want people to perform better, reward them. Bonuses, commissions, prizes — that’s how business works, and the same can apply for Toastmasters. It was important that I offer a grand prize that sparked excitement. Above: Members of play on words, Toast to Attendance PwC Digital Toastmasters. rewards the winner with a gift basket of champagne and assorted liquor, while the Bring a Buddy Challenge awards a gift card. These PR initiatives have improved attendance, membership and engagement among club members. I encourage fellow VPPRs to develop campaigns that not only improve awareness but also improve participation and motivate members to do speeches. For example, we’ve also implemented a series called Toastmasters Success Stories, which highlights a member's success story each month. Their photo and story of Toastmasters’ impact is featured around our office, in email blasts and on social media. Our first story was of Ariadna Castro, whose Toastmasters journey has been a positive experience that helped improve her public speaking and presentation skills. Toastmasters taught her confidence, shaped her presentation skills and taught her how to say goodbye to crutch words. This campaign has increased awareness of the club and drove a 28 percent increase in new members. Motivating fellow club members to put forth the efforts necessary to attain a goal can be challenging, but proposing new promotion ideas can help achieve this and take your club to the next level. 12

His clients include Darren Tay, the 2016 World Champion. Tate shared advice (and lots of great stories) in several presentations at the Spring Conference. The Sunshiner caught up with him for a conversation between appearances; here are excerpts: I love the energy that you bring to the speech. You really seem to be having a great time. Oh yeah. My philosophy is I'm going to have fun every single day. . . . In 1995 I had an epiphany. The previous year had been a very difficult year, with one hardship after another. And I had this epiphany â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I really hadn't laughed for what seemed like the whole year. I'm sure that's probably not possible but it felt like I hadn't laughed in over a year. On January 1, 1995, I said to myself, that's never going to happen again. Every day I'm going to laugh. And I've pretty much kept that commitment. I think one of the things that really attracted me to my wife is that we laugh every single day. And that's just a source of joy. How big a difference is there between when you started out and where you are now? Let me give you a history lesson. I'm a stutterer. There is no cure for stuttering, so when you're a child and you stutter, you get made fun of. . . . My dad was in the Ed Tate speaks at Spring Conference. military when I was a child, and we moved around a lot. We would move to a new neighborhood and within days, the kids would know I was a stutterer and they'd be making fun of me. Then one day we were moving to Chicago and I thought, this neighborhood, they will not know that I stutter. . . . In Chicago, basketball is very popular, so one of the things I started doing is, I started doing play-by-play. The other guys would tell who their favorite basketball player was. I memorized that and on the court I would do the play-by-play live with these names they had given to me. My high school had a TV station and I was an announcer there for four years, and when I went to college I became a disc jockey. The whole thing was based on the fact that I didn't want people to find out I stuttered. Then I became an executive and I started doing this speaking thing. So, when I became involved with Toastmasters it didn't seem that hard. There was a lot of history behind it. Can you share some of the process you went through in your championship year? ‘Rule Number One: You Look Like That.’ I was completely oblivious to the contest when I joined. Randall Shelton is the founder of my club, Cherry Creek Toastmasters in Denver, Colorado, and within six months he started saying, 'You're real good. You should enter this thing called the World Championship of Public Speaking.' Now, I was new to Toastmasters. I didn’t even know what that was. But it sounded really intimidating. About a year went by and it was getting to the point where I had to make a decision. I mean it got to the point where I was starting to get irritated. So I said, 'Randall, here's the deal. I'm going to enter this contest you keep talking about. And after I lose, we're never to have this conversation again.' Now here's something you should know about our club. My club, from a competition standpoint, it is the district. Our people typically win the district (contest) on a regular basis. So just to win the club competition was like winning a district contest. That's how tough it is. The competition I faced at the area and the division level did not compare to our club on an average day. I didn’t realize how good our club was. Then we got to the district. That's when I started to think that this thing was starting to get serious. How many times between district and the championship did you practice your speech? I couldn’t tell you the number of times I practiced, but I can tell you the number of audiences I spoke to: seventeen different audiences. Rule number two: You sound like that.

Practice is a real important part of success in Rule number three: Get over it.’ speaking, right? We are paid to produce a result every day – we can never have a bad day on stage. Period. So it's absolutely critical that we practice and we rehearse our craft.

Here's a couple of tips on rehearsing. Number one, the mirror is not your friend. The camera is. The best way, the fastest way for you to improve is to rehearse in front of a camera. A couple things about rehearsing in front of a camera. Rule number one: You look like that. Rule number two: You sound like that. Rule number three: Get over it. Practice, Practice – and Practice Some More There are a couple of different ways you can rehearse. One technique is called Rehearse in Reverse. This is what we did with Darren Tay. We split up his speech into five different segments. I would call out a number – I would say ‘Four’ and he would go to that spot on the stage and give me that segment of the speech. And I would say ’Two’ and he would go to that part. I would just randomly call out numbers and it helped him rapidly memorize the speech. The part of the speech I call the pivot, which is the most important part of the speech, he kept messing up. The first time he got it right was when he was on the stage of the World Championship of Public Speaking. Now keep in mind, we had created the speech from scratch in thirty-six hours. So it was incredible amounts of pressure. And all credit goes to him for pulling it off.

Tate and his wife, Sarika Mohabir. “I think one of the things that really attracted me to my wife is that we laugh every single day. We laugh every single day . . . and that's just a source of joy.”

So is it that he just has that 'it' thing that a champion has where, OK I keep getting it wrong, I keep getting it wrong, but then, when it counts, it's going to kick in? Is that what the one percent of speakers has, and he has it? I believe that speaking is a learned skill. I don't necessarily believe in it being a gift. As opposed to saying he has a gift, I'm going to say that Darren has a couple of assets. I call him One-Take Darren. He has this ability, when you say, ‘Let's try it this way' he does it that way – right there. There are very few people I've seen who have that ability.

He also has timing and he has humor. Those are skills he has had his entire life and under this crucible of the World Championship of Public Speaking, that came out. He has a work ethic and it is amazing. I think that's the biggest mistake that a lot of speakers make. They don't think they have to rehearse, or they feel weird about it. 'I’ve got my style, I'll sound mechanical.' No, here's the deal. You do sound mechanical when you're learning the material. But once you've learned the material, then you get a chance to sound natural. That's how it goes. Even jazz has a structure. It's not just blowing a horn and being improvisational; it has a structure. You can take a good jazz musician in a formal setting and he will play it well every time. That presentation you saw today that seemed like it was off the cuff, there was nothing unrehearsed. There was nothing unplanned. There was not one word, not one syllable, that was off the cuff. It was all planned. That's amazing, because it came out very naturally. Exactly. That's the whole thing. The art is hiding the art. . . . Once you've mastered the material, then it's internalized. There's a difference, it's not memorized. And then you can start to improvise. And then you can start playing jazz. Click to next page 17

What Matters: ‘Message Over Mechanics’ Is it the content or the physical presentation that matters more? Or are they equal? Here's my thinking. Master message over mechanics. At the end of the day it's all about the message. Look at TED Talks. They are all about the message. They're not about how you deliver the message. Sometimes in Toastmasters, I think we can get a lttle nit-picky about the mechanics, when it’s the message that matters most.

Three of the best speeches I ever heard were by non-professional speakers. I heard a speech by a woman who worked with Mother Theresa. She ummed and she aahed, she didn't know what to do with herself, she had nervous gestures – and it was one of the best stories I'd ever heard in my life. I heard another woman speak who had lost her daughter. And again, umms and aahs all over the place. It didn't matter, it was mesmerizing. I couldn't not listen. And finally there was this dentist who had lost his teenaged daughter to a drunk driver. He was testifying before the Colorado State Legislature, which was voting on some changes in the drunk-driving laws. He spoke, and the message was so powerful. . . . With Darren Tay, I had thirty-six hours to prepare him, and I could not afford to be nit-picky. We had to deal with the thing that mattered, and that was message.

2017 Spring Conference Lifetime Achievement Award

‘Clem the Gem’ Honored for Brilliant Works District 47 recognized a lifetime of giving by Clement Foster, DTM, naming him the recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented by District Director Lynda Hammond, DTM, at the Spring Conference. It honors Foster for four decades of personifying Tiastasters values. "Receiving this award means a great deal to me,” Fister said after receiving the plaque. “I am deeply honored." Foster was praised by many, including Past District Governor Anthony “Tony” Longley. "Few people have a nickname that encapsulates everything about their personality,” he wrote in a tribute for the conference program, “but Clem – Clem the Gem – is certainly one who does. Clem is caring, giving and knowledgeable. His passion is stronger today than it was when he first joined." A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Foster moved to The Bahamas 49 years ago to work as a corrections officer at Her Majesty's Prison in New Providence. Not long after, he joined Scotia Bank and worked his way up the management ladder until his recent retirement. Foster joined First Bahamas Branch 1600 in October 1974. He is a member of three Toastmasters clubs in Nassau, having also joined the Ernest T. Strachan Advanced Club Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and Scotia Dynasty Club. Clement Foster, DTM. In the 1980s, when District 47 covered the entire state of Florida plus The Bahamas, Foster was named District 47 Toastmaster of the Year. He served as division governor at a time when all Bahamas clubs were managed in a single division. He has represented Bahamas divisions in the district’s Humorous, Evaluation and Tall Tales speech contests, and has coached many others to success. Foster also has managed several successful education workshops for the district. The countless Toastmasters whom Foster has mentored include Division I Director Vanessa Scott, DTM. "He lives, breathes, thinks and talks Toastmasters," she said. "I have never heard 'no' from him when it comes to Toastmasters."

Hammond said Foster is "one of those people who give so much of themselves, it becomes part of who they are. Clem has always been here for us. He is not someone who stands out and seeks attention for himself, but when you see him, you know who he is."
