Fellow Toastmasters in District 47,

Welcome to your district conference Path to Success: See the Possibilities, Believe in the Potential. This is a Golden opportunity to meet and greet fellow Toastmasters throughout the district, to develop new friendships and renew existing relationships.

Take this opportunity to attend educational sessions to learn new ways to strengthen your club and to further your personal and professional skill development in communication and leadership. Celebrate member and club achievements with fellow Toastmasters in your district and plan for the future. Cheer on the speech competitors! Enjoy your district’s competitive events. The international speech competition culminates in the World Championship of Public Speaking at the Toastmasters International Convention in Denver, Colorado in August 2019. Will your contestant take the world stage?

At your conference you will elect future district leaders. What are your district’s long-term goals and who are the best candidates to lead your district into the future? Interview the candidates, ask them how they will lead, and select wisely. Then support them as they lead your district.

Consider your future in Toastmasters. What are your goals going forward? Use the conference experience to help you identify your next steps in communication and leadership. Look for Golden nuggets of learning throughout the conference, and when you return to your club, share your experiences with members who could not attend. When they hear about your experiences, they will feel like they were a part of it and encourage them to attend next year.

Relish the complete conference experience as you continue your Golden Toastmaster journey!

With Golden gratitude,

International President 2018-2019

Dear District Director and Fellow Toastmasters,

First, I must apologize for my absence. I regret that due to mitigating circumstances beyond my control, I am missing a District 47 conference for only the second time in 32 years of membership. However, I wish to c ongratulate you on the production of your annual District Conference, 2019. A lot of “elbow grease” has gone into organizing what I know will be an amazing weekend of learning and fellowship here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Please join me in raising a toast to the Conference Chair, Program Quality Director and the entire planning team on such a phenomenal job! I now propose a second toast to all first-time attendees, new DTM’s who will walk on Saturday, as well as contestants who will compete in the series of contests this weekend. Kudos to you; may you continue to enjoy a rewarding and fulfilling Toastmasters experience!

I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the many opportunities that will unfold for you to make new acquaintances, some of whom could become lifelong friends. Swallow every idea that will flow from the fountains of knowledge that will be turned on for you during the education sessions. Take full advantage of the networking opportunities; especially the special treat of meeting Past International President Jana Barnhill, DTM, whom I’m proud to herald as my personal friend and mentor.

Toastmasters International began in October, 1924 as a mere dream. No doubt, like other great dreamers in history, our founder Dr. Ralph C. Smedley must have endured considerable skepticism and ridicule as he began to formulate his vision into reality. Aren’t you glad he remained steadfast and faithful to his idea of improving the world by creating better leaders and communicators? Look at the result, over 357,000 members, in more than 16600 clubs in 143 countries and growing; all of this in just 95 years. Meanwhile, as District 47 closes in steadily on its 70th birthday, I am proud to say that I’m a product of this dynamic District. What an exciting time it is to be a Toastmaster!

Thank you District 47 for the preparation but most of all, thank you for the overwhelming support and show of confidence and goodwill. These are the main reasons that I am enjoying this esteemed honor of serving all of Region 8 and the wider world of Toastmasters International as an International Director.

May you have a wonderful conference!

Toastfully,

Dear District 47 Toastmasters,

Congratulations on your annual conference, which I am sure, will allow you the opportunity to reconnect with members from across the district.

Your conference theme “PATH TO SUCCESS…See the possibilities, Believe in your potential” resonates with me very well. Earlier in my career, I procrastinated very much because I always doubted my abilities. I would find an excuse not to do something because of the fear of failing and embarrassing myself. Although, in my heart I knew I could do it, I doubted my potentials.

It was in 1983 when I first heard of Toastmasters but not knowing what it was or how it would help me, I never pursued it. In 2001, I joined Toastmasters, which has transformed my life and opened opportunities for me over the years. It has been 18 years since, and I never looked back. I can only imagine if I had acted on following up those proceeding 18 years, what a difference it would have made in my life.

This conference is a reminder that we all have a purpose. Find that purpose by igniting the passion in you. Keep it burning and make a difference. If I was able to find my purpose and energize my voice, you can. Just See the Possibilities, Believe in your Potential, which will lead you on the Path of Success.

My journey as your Region Advisor is ending. I’ve learned so much for all of you and got to know the leaders of this district very well. I wish them much success in their future endeavors. Thank you for allowing me to serve these past 2 years.

Have a great conference!

Fellow Toastmasters

It is my privilege to welcome you to Toastmasters District 47 Annual Conference. This year's theme is Path to Success; See the Possibilities, Believe in Your Potential.

The district has 165 clubs across South Florida and the Bahamas that were asked to be part of initiative of change and transformation by making a commitment to success not only to our clubs but first to ourselves to take a fresh look at how we can improve and strengthen our clubs thus improving the member experience. The District Executive Team was asked to hold themselves and each other responsible and accountable for achieving these goals. Many clubs have embraced this, and I congratulate you on a job well done.

The purpose of this three-day conference is to give you an opportunity to network, explore tools and resources, to transform yourselves and clubs as we move into the Pathways Program. When we equip ourselves with the essential skills needed we can contribute significantly to your clubs’ goals. I encourage you to network and share your knowledge with others. Our speakers and various workshop sessions will offer a unique perspective on what it takes to make your journey in Toastmasters a Path to Success.

I also want to acknowledge our Keynote Speakers, Jana Barnhill, 2012 Past International President, and Kene Iloenyosi, the Founder of Talent Revolution, who have made a commitment to be here. They have traveled long distances to participate and have provided me with mentorship and I greatly appreciate their support.

I want to thank our sponsors who see the value of Toastmasters in their corporations and in our members’ growth and potential. Please take note of our sponsors and support them when possible as they continue to provide support to our organization.

I encourage you to take time to explore, discover, enjoy and share with your fellow conference attendees. I certainly believe that the conference will bear fruitful results and lay a firm groundwork for the future of District 47.

Finally, I would like to thank the conference organizers and volunteers who worked diligently to bring you a top-notch conference.

It has been my honor to serve you as District Director for year 2018-2019. My best wishes to all of you.

Spring Conference in District 47 is a big deal! We place great emphasis in creating a unique experience that is educational, breathtaking and loaded with enjoyment. It is a profound honor for me to serve in this incredible district with a rich and diverse culture.

From the Bahamas to the Florida Keys, we are a family committed to the toastmaster’s ideals of Integrity, Respect, Service and Excellence. This year’s Conference, under the theme Path to Success will bring together scores of Toastmasters from throughout the district. Whether this is your fifth or first conference, I am confident this year’s offerings will exceed all expectations.

Get ready to enjoy the Evaluations contest and laugh until your tummy hurts at the Humorous Speech Contest. You will witness the district’s best impromptu speakers go head to head in the Table Topics contest, and be in place for the crowd favorite International Speech Contest.

If you are a first timer, after this conference you will be an “all-the-timer, “ anxiously awaiting the next conference. The proposed education sessions will make your experience worthwhile, coupled with the social events and scrumptious menus that will tantalize your taste buds.

I salute all new DTM’s and congratulate all clubs for achieving Distinguished status. I tip my hat to the all members who have completed educational goals, whether in the traditional program or pathways. Let me encourage you to use this occasion to network and become familiar with the other members of your District Family as we together create a Path To Success.

Greetings fellow Toastmasters, Leaders and Guests,

We are pleased to welcome you to the District 47 Toastmasters Annual Conference.

Focusing on our theme “Path to Success” this conference is geared towards all key aspects of Communication and Leadership that will positively impact our members now, and in the future.

We Toastmasters have the tools that guarantee success and we must encourage each other to use them. It is our task to keep the flag of commitment, excitement and consistency to our clubs and its members flying high. Ours is the challenge to think and act outside the box and keep each other committed, for in the end we all will benefit. I believe, what makes us proud is not so much the actual goals we attain, but rather the process that we go through in order to attain them. Henry Ford once stated “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. ”

As we gather in another dynamic District Conference, let us foster new bonds and friendships that will aid in our personal growth as well as that of District 47. Looking ahead, I hope you will continue to find benefits in your involvement in Toastmasters and continue to grow and develop both your public speaking as well as your leadership skills.

“The pathfrom dreams to success does exist. May you have the vision to findit, the courage toget on to it, andthe perseverance to follow it. ”

I look forward with great anticipation to meet and interact with all of you. Let us “See the Possibilities andBelieve in Your Potential”

Greetings Fellow Toastmasters and Friends, Welcome to the District 47 Conference!!

I am so excited to see all of you here at this year’s Spring conference, I am over excited to meet up with old friends whom I have made over the past 19 years and to meet new ones and make memories. If this is your first time at a Toastmasters Conference, we promise that you will have a wonderful experience. As you enjoy the festivities take time to network and meet other members just like you, this is your time to fellowship while learning and growing. We celebrate with you our members over this weekend.

I celebrate today and thank the 2017/2018 District 47 officers for their service and achievements for that period; they will receive their awards and recognition at the Hall of Fame on Friday night. We also celebrate today our current leadership team for their contributions to date and commit to helping them to make our District Distinguished for 2018/2019. Most importantly, we celebrate with you our members and new clubs for all that you have done to make this year one of achievements and memories. This weekend is one to create so much more.

Spring is a wonderful time of year and at this conference as in years past we will elect our 2019/2020 District Officers who will lead us to another amazing year of experiences. Please be sure to visit the credentials desk and collect your voting material if you are a President, EVP or is carrying a proxy for your club, let your voice be heard.

This is an ever-changing program and Pathways is now on stream. The traditional education program has served Toastmasters for many years. However, much of the communication track hasn’t been updated since the 1970s. The Toastmasters Pathways learning experience is not a departure from the current program, because it builds on the established educational foundation. Pathways is a modernized learning experience suited to our changing global society. It offers you more benefits and more opportunities to learn, grow and meet personal and professional goals. You now have the opportunity to develop additional skills you can use not just in your club, but at your job or in your community as well.

I encourage you as you walk this Toastmasters Journey always remember to focus on your goals not on obstacles and don’t fall into someone else’s plan. The legacy you leave will be your own, so own it and be the best Toastmaster that you can be.

Meet the 2019 Conference Workshop Presenters

Dave Bricker

Workshop Presenters

Once upon a time, Dave Bricker voyaged on a small sailboat in search of stories. Leaving with $30 and a locker full of food and dreams, he sailed thousands of miles through the Bahamas, across the Atlantic, and up the east coast of the United States. Today, as an award-winning speaker, designer, and author of ten books, he shares true stories of adventure at sea—storms, calms, standing watch, and trimming sails—as metaphors for the challenges professionals face while navigating the seas of commerce. His clients, readers, and audiences learn the secrets of storytelling—how to craft messages that connect, engage, and succeed.
