Fellow Toastmasters in District 47,

Welcome to the 2021 district conference: One Community Connect-Ed As a result of the continuing global pandemic this conference is likely to be unlike any you have experienced before. The Conference Team has worked tirelessly to ensure that have the best experience possible. Throughout this conference you will have the opportunity immerse yourself in the various activities the conference team has assembled for you. Take time, when possible, to network with your fellow Toastmasters, make new friends, and build lasting relationships. I challenge each one of you to meet someone new and learn something about them.

The educational sessions will provide you with the opportunity to learn from others. You will gain new skills that you can use both in and out of Toastmasters. In addition to the educational sessions, you will hear from keynote speakers who will inspire and entertain you. Share what you learn with others, remember, knowledge is only worth something when you share it with others.

During the conference you will get to witness the thrill of competition! The best speakers in the district will take the virtual stage competing in various speech contests vying for the title of District Champion.

Who will be the leaders responsible for leading your district towards continued success in the upcoming year? For developing the strategies and innovative programs to increase the reach of Toastmasters throughout the district and help members achieve their goals? During the annual business meeting the voting members will be responsible for electing these leaders, this is a tremendous responsibility. Meet with these leaders and get to know them prior to the business meeting and then select those who will best serve the members, the district, and Toastmasters International.

Use your conference experience to make an impact on others and continue to keep District 47 One Community Connect-Ed

District 47 Toastmasters:

It has been a whirlwind of a year for many of us, as we weathered the storm, both in our personal and professional lives, having to deal with extraordinary challenges the global pandemic has created. We were forced to adapt to a new way of life, showed our resilience to forged forward and continued on our personal development journey acquiring new skills along the way.

Our family of Toastmasters across the district unified through their clubs, collaborated with other members and successfully transitioning to online meeting while continuing to make it a fun learning environment for all.

Although some of your fellow Toastmasters were unable to continue on their journey due to personal priorities and circumstance, you showed your commitment to continue pursuing your communication and leadership goals. I applaud you for taking accountability for your personal development. Please stay in touch with the former club members and continue to be the motivation they need to pick up from where they left off on their quest for success.

The leaders of your district demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership over the past year and will be remembered as the only batch of leaders to lead a district fully online, working diligently to fulfill the district mission and keeping their members engaged.

This unique conference of One Community Connect-Ed is a result of their effortless work and planning to stay committed and connected. It promises to awake your inner fire and focus on the memories, challenges and successes during this Toastmasters term.

Congratulations to all of you in District 47 for staying the course, navigating the rough storm and remaining resilient through it all.

On behalf of Toastmasters Board of Directors, I extend my best wishes and continued success to all of you.

Let’s celebrate 2020-2021 by finishing strong and welcome a renewed 2021-2022 Toastmasters term. Cheers!

Dear District 47 Toastmasters,

When people ask me for one take away from my year as Region Advisor, my answer is, that this year has proven to me that even though we are separated by our circumstances, we are connected by our passion and purpose. Your conference theme “One Community Connected-Ed” therefore resonates with me and underscores the importance of unity and collaboration despite our current circumstances.

In my home District, the Caribbean, we are 26 islands united by water and have no option but to bridge the distance between us by practicing excellence in communication and leadership. We are so used to not seeing each other more than twice or, in case of the Trio, four times a year and to depend on the possibilities of technology to be able to lead and engage with our fellow Toastmasters. It has been the skills developed from this experience, that has helped us to easily continue in the “new normal”.

The current circumstances have proven that our Toastmasters education has prepared us to effectively translate our skills into our new reality. Being able to stay connected as a community, in our communities is a vital skill and an urgent necessity. I invite you to make use of the opportunity offered to you through this conference experience. to connect with your fellow Toastmasters. Learn from their experiences, grow your network and keep sharing the passion that unites us as a community of communicators and leaders.

As I am coming to the end of my term as your Region Advisor, I want to thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to learn from you. However, the program year is still not over. Stay connected with your members, Clubs and District. Stay focused on the higher level of excellence you have committed yourselves to achieve by the end of this year. Encourage others to join, to participate actively and experience how Toastmasters will change their lives.

Thank you for the opportunity to share. I wish you a fabulous and successful conference.

At your service!

Welcome to District 47’s first Four Day Virtual Annual Conference!

A special Congratulations and Thank You to the many toastmasters who gave their knowledge and support in the planning of this event. The theme of this conference, One Community Connect-Ed personifies the District’s 2020-2021 vision of the Culture of Community through education, community, and connection.

We knew this Toastmaster year would be one of recovery, reigniting the interest, reminding us of our why, and reaching out in adapting to the virtual change. With the District Mission to build new clubs and to support all clubs in achieving excellence, we have continued to focus on rebuilding the membership in our clubs, by making our clubs member-centric, enriching the club quality, delivering value to our members in an environment of respect and trust.

This year’s District Executive Team shared the promise to the District to be unified in one purpose to follow the District Mission, and to operate with these four principles - Commitment, Collaboration, Communication and Consistency with an intention of “Creating a Legacy Where Members Excel”.

We applaud all Toastmaster Leaders for showing the way, for elevating your member’s experience, for reaching out to the communities and extending the Toastmasters brand and benefits to our youth, to parents, to organizations. You have impacted so many lives in sharing your toastmaster gift! You are epic examples of servant leadership and together you have made this district and this organization better and stronger. You have shown the love of this organization from your heart.

Over the next four days, soak in every minute of connection, education, and the fun this Conference offers. This Conference is for you, our toastmaster family, and your extended family.

Enjoy the experience. We are One Community Connect-Ed!

Leonardo C. Burrows, DTM, IPDD

Whenever I have the opportunity to do so, I boast about how resilient District 47 is. I can say this as a benefactor of a decade-plus tenure of interacting with our members and leaders. When I joined the toastmasters' program in 1999 District 47 was a large distract which included clubs all over Florida. I remember attending my first conference in Cocoa Beach, and the significant impression that encounter left on me. I quickly learned from that experience toastmasters is not just a place that develops communicators and leaders, it is the place of family.

When I use the word family I do so understanding that our members are committed to helping each other grow and strive. They do it with care and smile on their face. I have witnessed the split of our district, the evolution of our members, and the growth of the district. We have weathered major hurricanes, internal and external conflicts, yet we remain resilient and encouraged.

We are now forced to navigate through the tumultuous seas of covid-19, which has impacted us individually and collectively. This year’s conference theme One Community Connect-Ed is fitting, as it speaks to the singular element that has made us resilient. Once we remember we are stronger together, we can and will accomplish much. Whether you live in South East Florida, the Bahamas, or elsewhere in the world regardless of our varying cultures we are all human beings.

This community of toastmasters provides a network of resources that has the potential to fan the flames of your destiny. Take full advantage of this opportunity and embark on the journey with an open mind and willingness to serve. While are not meeting physically to host our conference, this will be short-lived and before we know it we will be seeing each other in person real soon. I implore you take full advantage of the smorgasbord of activities planned for your enjoyment during this year’s conference. Please do catch up on old times with your fellow toastmasters’ friends and family. May we continue to defy the odds and blaze trails together, while we forever remain One Community Connect-Ed!

Respectfully,

Greetings from your D47 Dynamic Conference Chairs!

Fellow Toastmasters,

Welcome to the Annual Conference of District 47! Yes, we know that the past twelve months have been filled with unimaginable obstacles and great uncertainty. But in the midst of it all, you remained resilient, innovative and committed to both your goals and the Toastmasters family. In a world of so many uncertainties, one thing is certain; we remained “ONE COMMUNITY CONNECT-ED”. So what better time than to communicate this through an elevated experience as we celebrate another successful Toastmasters year!

We, your conference chairs, have worked assiduously with many hardworking volunteers to ensure that this conference experience is like no other. Elevating the conference experience includes MORE; MORE engagement, MORE accredited speakers, MORE activities and MORE time to connect with persons in District 47 and around the world. Although we are connecting virtually, this should not diminish the quality of our connection. Connection, and more importantly, quality connection is crucial in life and in business. So, as we work to develop strategies to add value, look at how you communicate and stay connected. Invest in your relationships; Toastmasters and otherwise, as they are one of your most valuable assets. Please take this opportunity to attend educational workshops, to learn new ways to strengthen yourself, your club, your network and your fellow Toastmasters by engaging and connecting with new and old friends at the conference over the next four days.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to the Barbara Strasdas DTM, Shakira Taylor DTM, Austen Canonica DTM, Maurice Fuller DTM, Andre Kelly DTM, District 47 Division Directors, Jeanine Kinsey DTM. A HUGE thank you to our presenting sponsor- FPL, all our global sponsors, and the many volunteers who dedicated hours of service with great alacrity to bring you, what we truly hope will be an amazing experience. As we prepare to communicate, elevate and celebrate D47 style, feel free to sit back and relax or get up and dance with us. Be sure to download the Whova app to elevate your conference experience; you will not be disappointed.

Communication and Leadership Awards

Corporate Sponsor Recognition

District 47 is pleased to recognize the following corporations for their support of Toastmasters and the clubs they sponsor.

District 47 Communication Achievement Award

The District vision for this toastmaster year was to reach out to our community around us – to the youth groups, to the churches, to the organizations who work with the youth and organize Youth Leadership Programs, to reach out to businesses and offer Speech Crafts for their employees’ benefit. To be involved with Junior Achievement, Rotary, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.

The Boys & Girls Club organization is dear to the toastmasters’ organization. Toastmasters across Palm Beach County have served as mentors for the Youth of the Year candidates over the past 7 years. This past year this mentorship expanded into St. Lucie County. We were introduced to Tommy John through this mentorship endeavor. It was apparent that he is a person dedicated to the youth and who should be a toastmaster as his listening skills were highly honed. In weekly sessions, his stellar communication skills were evident in his comments to Elyse, the 2021 Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County Youth of the Year. This may be his paid position, but he genuinely loves what he does. His experience with the Boys & Girls Clubs and his current role as Director of Community Outreach is a blessing to the Boys & Girls Club organization and to the many youth who have come under his mentorship.

District 47 is proud to present Tommy John with this award for Outstanding Achievement and Contributions to Communication Excellence!

Tommy John moved to Florida 6 years ago from the northern city of Chicago. He has 11 years of experience working with children, families, and building community partnerships. He currently works with the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County, has worked with other Boys & Girls Club agencies, and as a licensed school teacher. In his former role as Director of Education and currently Director of Community Outreach, he is excited to help guide the development of the youth by implementing meaningful programs. One of the reasons he works with the youth is to provide them with meaningful handson learning experiences to better prepare them for the future. Tommy says, “Our goal is to make sure that all of our youth are prepared for any future endeavor they wish to pursue!”

Visual Management: Connecting People to a Common Goal

We govern our lives and daily activities on a continuous basis by unconsciously practicing visual management. Visual management is a way of communicating everything from adherence to standards, warnings and expectations. Visual management is intuitive in that it needs little or no prior training in order to interpret and use the results.

How can we use visual management to enhance performance, drive excellence and engage and empower people, whether in our Toastmasters club or beyond? How can we use it to drive club excellence?

• In this breakout session you will learn:

• The principles of visual management.

• How to apply visual management in Toastmasters and beyond.

• Three simple tools that you can use immediately that will make a significant difference in connecting your group to a common goal.

Yourself Permission

Do we go in the direction of our dreams so we can live the life we imagined? When we think about this question we can’t help but wonder where we lost the ability to follow a dream. As a child, we had no problem chasing dreams and we were happy to do so. As adults, the dream becomes blurred and along with that, missed opportunities for happiness. I truly believe the pursuit of a dream IS happiness. In many aspects of our lives we are conditioned to seek permission; however, when it comes to our dreams the only person who has the right to grant permission is the dreamer. This keynote will guide you to give yourself permission to create a dream big vision with a life changing purpose, fueled by passion, fulfilled through action so that you can live the life you have imagined.

Rosemary Ravinal is an accredited public relations professional, e-Speaker certified visual presenter, media expert, executive coach, and public speaker. She is a member of the National Speakers Association and Florida Speakers Association. She is also the president of Miami Wynwood Toastmasters. In this workshop you will learn how Appearance, Staging and Styling, Energy and Technology work together to help you shine on the small screen. Using examples from business conferences and media interviews, Rosemary will show you how to use the ZoomScore™ to rate speaker images based on the 10 essential elements that comprise a powerful professional presence.

Ubuntu Leadership - Together we Achieve More

Hubert Edwards is the Principal of Next Level Solutions, a consultancy firm. He is a former senior bank executive; senior auditor and regulatory consulting manager with one of the leading big four public accounting firms; and senior bank examiner with the Central Bank of The Bahamas.

Hubert is an author, media practitioner, an engaging and inspirational John Maxwell Team Certified Speaker, Coach and Trainer, specializing in leadership training and coaching. He is the strategic force behind the radio program in The Bahamas, The Essentials!

Edwards is the Founder of Hubert Edwards Global a personal development and coaching organization established help individuals “unleash their true Greatness”. Under this organization, he delivers/facilitate training on leadership and provides coaching and mentoring.

The workshop uses the philosophy of Ubuntu - "I am because we are" to underline an approach to leadership. It provides participants with an alternate view from what generally prevails in society where leaders are seen as self-centered, focusing on personal advancement to the exclusion of the individuals that they lead. The workshop draws on historical figures as examples of what leadership can represent when the importance of the individual and the potency of the collective becomes central to the achievement of corporate goals and objectives.

The most interesting thing about my DTM journey was starting a club. It was the most fulfilling and also the most stressful part of the journey. I loved meeting new people and helping them understand the Toastmasters program. It was very enriching.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” -

Besides bringing my sister in as an active member of Toastmasters Int'l, one interesting and amazing thing about my journey to DTM is that I achieved it in the midst of a pandemic while being a club coach, a mentor, and while completing my High-Performance Leadership Program.

“Don't look at how high the mountain is, just begin to climb and soon you will be at the top.”

I was so determined to earn my DTM under the traditional educational program that I gave one to two speeches every day since February 2020.

One thing I learned about my journey was "Believe in yourself and stay focused on your goals. Sometimes people may disappoint but surround yourself with people that want the same thing as part of your team.” original quote by me.

"Where no man has gone before.” from Star Trek (1966-1969)

"Great things in business are never done by one person. They are done by a team of people.” Steve Jobs:

The journey to DTM was an exciting one with a plethora of memorable learning experiences along the way. Set YOUR goals, forge your own path if need be, and remain steadfast and relentless in fulfilling YOUR dreams, not someone else’s “vision” of what your dream should be.

“To Thine Own Self Be True.”

Proud member of the Toastmasters Club at FAU. First TM experience was getting clapped off for my icebreaker. From this, I accomplished a Select Distinguished Area as former Area 31 Director while concurrently leading my club to President's Distinguished. I was Co-MC for the 4 contests during the 2019 District Conference.

"If you cannot accept a no, why were you deserving of a yes?" This is what my older brother always told me.

As a professional speaker, Toastmasters has been my "speaker gym." I'm still showing up and still learning.

“The purpose of a speech is to transform an audience!"

Carpe Diem would undoubtedly describe my DTM journey, but it was District 47's ability to ameliorate Hurricane Dorian and the Covid-19 pandemic that made it a rewarding and fulfilling experience. I love Toastmasters!

I am thankful for the urgency that the transition to Pathways created. It was just the push that I needed.

"Trust in the Lord with All your Heart and Lean not unto your own Understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path."

This scripture is one that I live by and because of this I pushed and pursued my 2nd DTM. Obtaining my 2nd DTM was indeed a great accomplishment. I would encourage all members to pursue their dream and be the best you can be.

When I joined the program in 1999, I set my sights on taking advantage of the communication and leadership opportunities the program offered. As an individual who is committed to selfimprovement, I desire to become better than I was yesterday. This is my 5th DTM, and I do not plan to end my Toastmaster journey. I am excited about Pathways and completing all of the paths. I encourage you to take the journey and enjoy the experience.

The most interesting parts of my DTM experience were working with an incredible team of Toastmasters volunteers for my DTM project and creating 8 Toastmasters Scholarships.

“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasures that you seek” – Joseph Campbell

Although the speaking stage may have changed, I find the need for Toastmasters is as important to me as ever. I am taking my virtual presentation skills to a new level and helping other to do the same.

One interesting thing learned on this DTM journey was “how much I had to get out of my own way”. It was a constant battle staying on track and trying to accomplish my DTM. It’s amazing to realize how much of a challenge it was to step out of my comfort zone versus stepping up to the challenge. It was a long road but I’m glad I finally crossed the finish line (with help from my fellow Toastmasters). I want to encourage you to pursue your goals because you definitely have what it takes to accomplish anything you set your mind to.

I am currently serving as Division F Director.

The most interesting thing about my DTM journey is realizing every step towards my DTM designation was like stepping on cushion. The Toastmasters organization is a supportive structure and community to set you up for success.

This is my second DTM and I was determined to complete it before the Traditional Program was discontinued. I achieved my first DTM in July 2009 and due to serious procrastination and life getting in the way, this second DTM was achieved many years later, on June 10, 2020. My DTM journey has afforded me the opportunity to improve both my leadership and communication skills and to work alongside some amazing Toastmasters. This is truly an incredible organization, and I am so proud to be a part of it.

Receiving the highest award in Toastmasters, the Distinguished Toastmaster award was a big accomplishment for me. The most interesting thing that happened to me is that it helped me to become a better listener. You would think it's all about speaking. It's so much more than that.

Toastmasters International is an amazing organization that has given me the wings to fly. I have been polished over the years and am now shining bright like a diamond. "A Leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. *John Maxwell*

My DTM journey began with lots of laughs at the Humorously Speaking Toastmasters Club in District 36 and ended with lots of love as I visited over a dozen clubs in 3 countries! “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

On July 13, 2018, it was pure happiness to receive my first DTM as a member of MIA Tarmac Speakers and starting my second term as Division E Director for District 47. With the Traditional education program ending on June 30, 2020, I was inspired to achieve my second DTM as a member of 305 Speaks in which I was a visionary, the first Club President, and one of the club sponsors. Achieving this designation twice on June 26, 2020 demonstrated commitment to my personal and professional development, and a fulfilling member of Toastmasters International that has opened many doors that I could not imagine.

"One Day at a Time"

My most memorable moment in Toastmasters is the first time that I experienced a complete, awful, painful and embarrassing blank while giving a speech. My whole method of speech-giving changed after that -- I no longer recite memorized speeches but rather, I know the material and just start talking.

After joining Toastmasters in June 2010, I embraced the program. I attended District events, made amazing friends, became Area 40 Governor and never stopped. My first DTM was so exhilarating that I kept going! Now, I have four. Should I stop?

The African proverb, ”It takes a village to raise a child,” sums up my entire DTM journey. If it wasn't for the village of supporters and mentors pushing and encouraging me, I would not be receiving my DTM award.

I joined Toastmasters in 2002 and finally earned my DTM in 2020! That should get some kind of an award too...lol :) Toastmasters has been a part of my life for so long because I believe in its power. It truly changes lives for the better. A fantastic confidence-booster and a great way to be in a positive community with like-minded individuals.

I joined Toastmasters in October 2013, and when I received my CC manual, I checked to see what the requirements were for achieving the DTM award. After seeing what the requirements were, I likened achieving the award to a journey of a thousand miles and I had no desire to travel that far. I forgot about the journey and started walking. The first step was the famous Ice Breaker speech, and I kept walking and finally, after years of persistence I arrived at my destination – DTM.

"Success and procrastination are absolutely incompatible." - Og Mandino.

The DTM does not represent the end of the book, only the start of the next chapter. Hopefully that next chapter will include the world beyond Toastmasters while you put your skills into practice.

“While most of us may have entered Toastmasters to learn to make speeches, that benefit is but the beginning of the good which may come to us and the good which we may do for mankind.” Dr. Ralph Smedley

In the beginning, joining Toastmasters was just something I did to become a better speaker. However, I soon realized the organization connected me with individuals who continue to support me in many areas of my life including my journey to becoming a DTM. I know longer see my club as a group of people but as family.

"Always strive to walk in excellence."

My DTM journey was much longer than I anticipated because I allowed too many other essential issues, like my health, and non-essential issues, like work, to get in the way. But my other Area Directors all getting their DTMs when I should have been receiving mine as well woke me up!! The rest is history.

It was never a goal. I just followed the program and suddenly it was within reach and I grabbed it.

Besides sharpening my leadership and communication skills, the most interesting aspect of my DTM journey was meeting extraordinary professionals who became mentors, collaborators and friends.

My Toastmasters experience is constantly evolving. The most important aspects of it were having a safe place to work on my flaws, discovering strengths I didn't know I had, realizing opportunities I would not have seen elsewhere, and most importantly, meeting people I admire and who inspire me to be a better human being.

"To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities."

I purposely joined Toastmasters during the year 1996 to overcome my fear of public speaking. Loving the opportunity to speak, I continued to compete in Speech Evaluation and Table Topics competitions. As an avid believer in this program, I continue to be an ambassador for Toastmasters everywhere I go.

Outspoken

My DTM journey did not begin with a personal or professional aspiration, but it was a culmination of fellow Toastmasters planting the seed, creating the right environment, nudging and assisting in the journey, and a desire to repay what I have received through Toastmasters.

“You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him to find it within himself.” Galileo

I always like to share the story about when I first started Toastmasters and my first Table Topic. I got a topic (Gardening) I knew nothing about and totally blanked out. I ran off the stage in tears. Toastmasters helped me get over that fear which has helped me so much in my professional and personal life.

In my leadership role as Area 54 Director and Club Coach, Errol Leandre, a new Toastmaster of 5 months was offered an opportunity to be a test speaker at the Area 54 Evaluation Contest. In 2020, Errol went from test speaker to winning the 2020 District 47 International Speech Contest to competing in the Semi-Finals World Championship for Public Speaking.

I completed the path to DTM several years ago as I was eligible from 2009 after completing my stint as Area Governor but due to some mix up when TI converted to the new system, some of my information was misplaced in the shuffle. To me, that was the true sign of a DTM when you are crowned for demonstrating the designation, even before you actually have it. It is an honor to finally wear the crown.

When Pathways was introduced and there was a time limit to complete the legacy DTM, I realized that I already had about 85% of what I needed In June of 2019, I became Area Director of six clubs. In September 2019 I suffered a stroke, losing 75% of my vision and cognitive abilities. The Division B team helped me stay on as Area Director and even mentor a new club On March 13, 2020, one day before my Area Contests, COVID19 cancelled everything. I had to reschedule and learn something called Zoom Toastmasters pulled me through my stroke at a faster rate than my doctors thought possible, and I owe it to all the Toastmasters along the way!! I was eager to start, timid to actually begin, became focused on the journey, and I never stopped. My home club, Cable Revolutionaries Toastmasters Club, created that learning environment that inspires me to want to go further. I have worked in many capacities and assisted anyone who asked in my club, Area, Division and/or District. It has been a very interesting journey of self-development. I tapped into strength I never knew I had. Therefore, I am truly excited for the next step in my Toastmasters career.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

The best part of my DTM journey was the opportunity that I had to meet excellent persons, and see those persons grow incredibly with the firm decision to be a better leaders and communicators. Toastmasters was the best tool to reach that goal. Personally, I grew my communication style and developed leadership skills that I have inside. I am very proud to be a DTM today. Thank you to Toastmasters.

"My nine-year journey to become a Distinguished Toastmasters was well worth it. I have learned a lot about myself, grown as a person and gained a lot of self-confidence. I am grateful for the members I have met in Toastmasters who willingly shared their knowledge with open hearts. I am at a stage now where I am having fun in Toastmasters and am enjoying giving back to my Toastmasters family. Being of service to others is my biggest passion."

My DTM journey can be summed up in two words: perseverance and gratitude. It took me over five years to reach this achievement and, in that time, I’ve learned how to adapt, improvise and overcome challenges as they appear. I have also learned that I didn’t have to make this journey alone. So many amazing Toastmasters have helped me along the way, offering me opportunities for growth and providing guidance and encouragement as I progressed. So, when I take this DTM walk, I’m grateful for everyone who made the experience so memorable!

One interesting moment was a conversation with Lynda Hammond, PDD. I'd been away from Toastmasters to assume leadership duties for another organization. Lynda simply said "Andrea, it is time. You need to finish your DTM.

“Life at times is a roller coaster. I go with the flow so the whirlwind can’t overwhelm me.”

I originally joined Toastmasters to gain confidence in public speaking and had no interest in serving in any leadership role. However, during my DTM journey, the most exciting and rewarding experience for me was serving as a Division C Area Director. Being part of a great division team and interacting with people from clubs across the district enabled me to build relationships that I will always cherish.

The most interesting thing during my DTM journey was becoming a club coach. This appointment allowed me to showcase my leadership abilities bringing my executive experiences from two different Clubs. While I am certain that I was able to share all that I had learned in the Toastmasters program, I also truly can say that I learned how to serve others and in doing so we accomplished much.

When I started this path to DTM, it seemed daunting and impossible; however, I knew the importance of planning and having a few mentors in life. I was able to plan out my speeches and Area Director responsibilities while helping new clubs just because I knew where I wanted to be.

I have been an active member of Toastmasters International since April 2014, with membership in four Toastmasters clubs, namely Police Dynamic Enforcers, Legalities, Pinnacle Seekers, and my home Club, Healing Communicators TM Club 7178, of which I am the current President. My DTM journey has been nothing short of phenomenal. It is such a delightful pleasure to be honored today as a Distinguished Toastmaster.

I started visiting Brickell Toastmasters on December 4, 2013, and until the day I delivered my icebreaker March 6th, 2015 (457 days), I sat by the wall hoping I would not be called upon for Table Topics or a functionary role. I succeeded as if I had an invisible cloak. Actually, my then 9-year-old son delivered a Table Topics speech before I ever did and won best Table Topics speaker!

I have also served as Area Governor, Division Director, Distinguished Club Growth Director and Distinguished Program Quality Director. The most interesting thing about my DTM journey is being afforded the ability to serve the wonderful members of our District. The achievement of this award is due largely in part to them.

Cable Beach West Club

My Toastmasters journey has been 7 years in the making, and one of the most interesting factors of it would have to be earning a brand-new family. It started with my home club, Luminaries 1510789, who gave me a chance and a space to be. Then I, along with my incredible Toastmaster brother and sister DTMs Glenisha T. Albury and Garth G. Jackson Jr., formed Visionaries 7548881, which was a joy to plant and water into blossoming. During that time, all Area 60 Clubs, Action for Achievement 1095, Chickcharney 971904, and Cable Beach West 6796, supported, respected, helped, and covered me. These incredible 5 clubs became the family I never knew I needed, and made me the DTM I am today, and for them, I am eternally grateful.

Boca Raton Advanced Toastmasters

My DTM journey started when I was invited to Toastmasters lunch in February 1974. This was my first day as a vice president at Citibank in New York. I joined the club and stayed for two years. This really took my career to the next level. In 1976, I left because my job required that I work in 40 countries during the next 30 years. What I learned from Toastmasters helped me immensely in adapting to cultures, making speeches and being an effective leader. I rejoined Toastmasters in Boca Raton in 2017 and was able to receive my DTM in June 2020.

My DTM journey was a very productive one. Although, we are in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic throughout the world, Toastmasters found ways to stay connected. We stay connected by participating in various virtual webinars, club meetings and training sessions. It was good to see other Toastmasters club members visit and share with BUT Nation Builders and vice versa.

Outspoken Toastmasters

I have made the best choice in my life and it was joining Toastmasters in 2010. It was purely like taking a chance to know if I could speak before an audience. I had to admit to myself that it was a complete failure. It was the encouragement of the fellow Toastmasters in the club who had come to help me to stand up on my feet. I started to build up the confidence to stay and continue Toastmastering in the club. Toastmasters positively changed my life. Toastmasters provides a mutual learning environment. I know that while I have benefited from Toastmasters, I have to support fellow members to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
