ights, Curtain, Action! Fellow Toastmasters, we are just days away from realizing one of the most exciting events on our District’s Calendar, our 2014 Fall Conference, under the theme – “BROADWAY”. Your dynamic team of District Leaders including Area and Division Governors are busy knitting the final seams together. The entire production meanwhile is being orchestrated by an enthusiastic and creative producer, Conference Chairperson, Diana Loy, DTM. No matter how dynamic the cast and how creative the producer, no production can succeed with out you! Therefore, whether you’re an attendee, a stage hand, sponsor, advertiser, session presenter or contestant, I’d like to thank you for your support on behalf of the District’s leadership team and all who are working behind the curtains to insure that our conference attendees have the most rewarding experience possible. The menu of educational sessions is designed to make you a better public speaker, a better leader and a better person. There’s the special session for you First Timers on Saturday morning which I promise will be a memorable experience. We will graduate a class of new DTMs during the DTM walk at the Saturday evening banquet. Then there are the speech contests – 14 jittery persons are right now trying to calm their nerves as they prepare to compete on the grand stage in the Evaluation and Humorous Speech contests. It’s going to be “HOT”! At this conference, you will come face to face with some outstanding “actors and actresses from South Florida and The Bahamas. You’ll meet and be inspired by the Toastmasters International’s 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking, Lance Miller. By the time this publication is released, you’ll only have a few days before the “Box Office” closes. Act now and register to join the rest of the cast on BROADWAY, West Palm Beach, Florida on November 7-9, 2014. When the lights come on and the curtains are raised, make sure you’re there to hear the beautiful sound... ACTION! SEE YOU THERE!

Reflecting on an amazing milestone
THE SUNSHINER
Happy Anniversary, Toastmasters International! As you probably have heard a few times, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of the founding of our beloved organization. You know what? Toastmasters International is still as relevant today as it was in 1924. I daresay that in this fast-paced virtual society, the speech and leadership skills we hone are more necessary. Below is a media release from Toastmasters International to observe this milestone. Marinate on this thought, and recommit to the ideals.

Andrea Robinson, ACB/CL Sunshiner Editor RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif., Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -Toastmasters International has come a long way since its humble beginnings 90 years ago. Since October 22, 1924, when Toastmasters' founder Ralph C. Smedley held the first meeting in the basement of a YMCA in Santa Ana, Calif., more than 4 million men and women have become more confident speakers and leaders through the Toastmasters experience. And Smedley's idea of turning young business leaders into "would-be orators" has led to a thriving global organization with membership exceeding 313,000 in more than 14,650 clubs in 126 countries. Toastmasters International continues to build on Smedley's vision as it grows both domestically and internationally. With communication and leadership skills ranking at the top of employers' list of attributes desired in employees, Toastmasters training benefits job seekers of all ages and demographics. Many employers – including numerous Fortune 500 companies – offer corporate clubs that employees can join to develop and improve their skills. "Toastmasters' ability to thrive over the last 90 years is a testament to Smedley's vision and people's desire for self-improvement," says Toastmasters International President Mohammed Murad. "He recognized the importance of developing public speaking skills in a supportive, social atmosphere. He was fond of saying, 'We learn best in moments of enjoyment.' " Toastmasters continues to see consistent growth and has seen significant membership gains for the past 21 years. The organization is continually evolving and has many initiatives underway, including expanding its corporate presence and modernizing its education program.

"These initiatives will continue to make us relevant to a new generation of professionals," says Toastmasters Chief Executive Officer Daniel Rex. While Toastmasters remains focused on expansion, Rex attributes the organization's achievements and longevity to the dedication of its members. "We couldn't have achieved our sustained success over the past 90 years without the support and efforts of our leaders all over the world who volunteer their time and expertise to create a rich and rewarding member experience." LEARN ABOUT YOUR FELLOW TOASTMASTERS
Hobbies: Reading, writing, fishing and baking Number of years in Toastmasters International: 19 years Home Club: 829842 In a sentence, describe how Toastmasters has changed your life: I’ve been in and out of the program and each time I return I’m at a different point in my life. Toastmasters has been instrumental in both my leadership and communication development. My confidence soared once I discovered my voice and my ability to effectively communicate with others. I believe that the positive energy experienced in a Toastmasters meeting has special healing powers. Who is your mentor in Toastmasters? Why? When I joined the program the second time around DTM Joyce Rahming took me under her wings. She recognized leadership qualities and pushed me on two occasions to run for an Executive position. I was afraid but she believed in me and continued to direct me. She was always an encouragement and inspiration. Describe your most memorable speech/presentation: An evening I will not soon forget, the night I offered my farewell speech as President. I had one of the best years in the Division but not because of my own ability but because I had an incredible, hardworking and dedicated team. The members were my inspiration. Watching them grow was a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. Although I pushed most of them out of their comfort zones, their drive and zeal to achieve their goals is what fueled my fire. Advice for a beginning Toastmaster: Immerse yourself fully, take a dive into the program and I promise, you will not regret it. Visit other clubs, attend competitions and make a sacrifice to attend at least one conference. Meeting members from other clubs, establishing friendships with others creates synergies among clubs which breeds success for a member thus resulting in a successful club.

Please send an email with the information to sunshiner@toastmastersd47.org. Please include the name and number of your home club, and, if possible, a candid snapshop of you doing a fun activity.

Universal Toastmasters recently hosted its club meeting with an eerily spooky flair to celebrate the Halloween season. Toastmaster of the day was Maurice Fuller, DTM, who got into his role and the theme. He did consult with club President Jerrod Clairsaint.
